Hops news USA: Yakima Valley hop growers expect solid harvest this year
Cold and snowy weather in March created complications for the hops planted in the Yakima Valley and the Pacific Northwest.

But mild summer weather helped the more mature hops farther along in a multiyear production cycle, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported on September 4.

Overall, regional hop growers are expecting a solid harvest.

“I think most everyone feels this year’s crop will be at least equivalent to last year,” said Ann George, executive director of the Hop Growers of America, a Yakima-based organization that provides promotion and education to American hop growers.

For most growers, the Yakima Valley harvest started early last week and is expected to continue through the rest of this month.

Washington, Oregon and Idaho grow nearly all U.S. hops, with Washington alone growing 75 percent of the nation’s crop. Most Washington hops are grown in the Yakima Valley.

Last year, hop growers in the three states harvested 106.9 million pounds, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures analyzed by the Hop Growers of America. Just over 77.7 million pounds came from Washington.

Based on a grower survey, the USDA estimate for this year’s crop is at 106 million pounds. Final figures won’t be ready until December, several months after the harvest ends, George said. ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Growers concerned industry uptake of new malting barley varieties is too slow
Farmers choosing malt barley seed in the spring of 2019 would have seen CDC Copeland and AC Metcalfe at the top of the list of recommended varieties published by the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC). CDC Copeland was registered 20 years ago, in 1999. AC Metcalfe was registered in 1997. While the list includes newer varieties, barley growers are concerned that industry uptake of new varieties is too slow. Newer barley varieties may offer higher yields and better disease packages, but if maltsters might not buy the new varieties, growers will keep planting the old standards, Grainews reported on August 30.

Peter Watts, the CMBTC’s managing director, understands the frustration. “We continue to work very hard at introducing new varieties into the system to get them commercialized,” he said. “The good news is that we’re having success in getting new varieties accepted by the domestic and global malting and brewing industry.”

In the 2017-2018 season, China emerged as the largest buyer of Canadian malting barley, purchasing 1.4 million tonnes and accounting for 85 to 90 per cent of total malting barley exports. Prior to that, the largest buyer was always the Canadian malting industry, said Watts.

Domestically, new variety acceptance by the major brewers has ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance seeks answers on future relationship with AB InBev
The awkwardness between Craft Brew Alliance and Anheuser-Busch InBev didn’t end on August 23 when the world’s largest beer manufacturer passed on making a qualifying offer to purchase the company, Brewbound reported.

AB InBev, which owns more than 31% of the Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company, had until August 23 to either make an offer of at least $24.50 per share to buy the remainder of the company or pay a one-time $20 million, opted for the latter.

CBA CEO Andy Thomas told Brewbound that the awkwardness has shifted from a will-they, won’t-they-get-married scenario, to one in which the question is if the two companies still want to live together now that they’re no longer engaged.

“There’s a different kind of tenor to the relationship now,” he said. “That’s not good or bad. That’s just what it is.”

Thomas described CBA and AB InBev’s “it’s complicated” relationship in terms of a break up. Sometimes couples who break up become better friends; other times, there’s no basis for a friendship.

“The question is what role do they play, and what role do they want to play,” he said. “Those are the conversations that we’re having in the future of CBA’s development.”

Answers to those questions are still ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery set to open East Falmouth location early next week
Passersby on Route 28 can’t miss the sensuous dark-haired mermaid — trademark for Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery — surveying traffic from the side of a giant black silo attached to a rustic barn set to open as the brewery's first mainland location, the Cape Cod Times reported on September 2.

Legend has it, according to the brew company’s website, the mermaid once lured 17th century explorer Bartholomew Gosnold to “a field brimming with lush island grapes” on Martha’s Vineyard. Being a good Englishman, Gosnold decided to use them in the ale he brewed for his crew.

It has taken the best part of a year, but Bad Martha is now set to open its first mainland operation in East Falmouth next week.

Jacobi Reid, the 31-year-old brewmaster for Bad Martha’s on Martha’s Vineyard, has been on-site in Falmouth making sure construction went smoothly.

While his specialty is brewing the beer, Reid said he was involved in every facet of the interior finish work, conferring with the contractors and even doing some of the plumbing to make sure the brewing process “will flow correctly.”

Crunch time has now begun. Tables and chairs are being set up and shelves are being stocked. But most importantly, beer is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA & PA: Night Shift Brewing planning new Philadelphia brewery by end of 2020
After nearly a decade in business, one Boston-based brewery is betting big on Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on August 29.

Night Shift Brewing plans to open a 130,000 square foot, $10 million production facility, taproom, and distributorship in Roxborough by the end of 2020, co-founder Rob Burns, a Bucks County native, told the Inquirer. Once it opens, the facility will serve as the brewery’s first outpost outside of Massachusetts, as well as its largest (and most expensive) location yet.

The idea, Burns said, is to create Night Shift’s “forever home.”

“That’s what we’re talking about building in Philadelphia,” he said. “Let’s build our forever home, where we have room to grow for a long time, and really plant deep roots.”

Located at 401 Domino Lane in Roxborough, the former home of Penn Beer Distributors (now in Hatfield), the planned 100-barrel brewhouse will initially enable Night Shift to produce about 30,000 additional barrels of beer annually, doubling its 2018 output. Ultimately, the facility could allow for the production of 200,000 barrels of beer.

That total would put Night Shift in the league of larger Massachusetts-based breweries like Mass Bay Brewing (parent company to Harpoon Brewery), which produced about 185,000 barrels of beer in 2018, according ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Four new craft breweries now open in British Columbia
Four new craft breweries opened their doors last week across British Columbia: Slow Hand Beer (Vancouver), Copper Brewing (Kelowna), Rustic Reel Brewing (Kelowna) and New Tradition Brewing (Comox), the Vancouver Courier reported.

Slow Hand has taken over the former Doan’s Craft Brewing and Powell Brewery space on Powell Street, where founders Kurtis Sheldan and Chris Charron have a unique mission: to create a brewery devoted to making nothing but great lager beers. Much like the brewery’s previous tenants, Slow Hand has a full lounge licence offering full pints and tasting paddles, as well as packaged product. No growler fills, unfortunately.

Copper Brewing on Kirshner Road in Kelowna’s Landmark neighbourhood features an immaculately-designed 110-seat lounge in a modern industrial space. The focus here is “approachable” beer styles with a full menu provided by next-door neighbor, montREALfood.

Rustic Reel Brewing Co. is the brainchild of beer-loving German-born owner Susi Foer. This massive, 8,000-sq.-ft. space in Kelowna’s North End features a full kitchen, a private event space, a local artisan marketplace called the Tackle Box and classic, approachable North American craft beer styles.

New Tradition Brewing owner Pat Savard’s great-grandpa paved the way for a unique family legacy: bootlegging beer during the prohibition. Today, the family is ...More info on site

Less than a year after announcing it would open a taproom and brewery in Walker's Point, Minneapolis' Indeed Brewing Company has set an opening date of this Friday, Sept. 6, OnMilwaukee.com reported on September 3.

Brewery news USA, OH: N.E.W. Ales Brewing hopes to open in Middletown by next spring
A new brewery is in the works for Middletown, WHIO reported on August 30.

N.E.W. Ales Brewing aims to open in the same space as All About You Catering, 1521 First Ave.

The trio behind the new business are Wes and Nikki Heupel and friend Beth O’Harra, who have already developed five craft beers.

That includes a Hoppy Amber called Country Dreamer; a Flippin’ Fruit Tart Strawberry Lime Gose; Saison of Love, which is a saison; and a black plum sour, which is Flippin’ Fruit Plum Sour. They are in the process of making a pumpkin beer, OMG Becky Look at that Pumpkin.

“We really like trying to find new flavors we can play with and make them come out in our beer,” Nikki Heupel said. “As far as number of beers, we have the capability to have several different beers at one time, but it will just depend on the season and what else we have going on. It will vary.”

N.E.W. Ales Brewing hopes to be open by next spring.

Brewery news USA, ME: Dirigo Brewing Company to close down on September 14
It’s about to be last call to enjoy a brew at Biddeford’s Dirigo taproom.

According to announcement posted on the business’s Facebook page, the Dirigo Brewing Company at 28 Pearl St. in downtown Biddeford will be closing for good on Sept. 14, the Bidderford Journal Tribune reported on September 1.

Until it closes, brewery taproom hours will continue from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sundays.

Dirgo Brewing Company first opened in the city on Aug. 19, 2016 and is owned by Tom and Molly Bull.

“A million thanks to our friends, family, staff, and colleagues in the Maine beer community for mountains of love and support over the years,” said a message from the owners posted on the brewery’s Facebook page. “Those of you who know us will understand when we say that our hearts go out to you.”

The Bulls say that Dirigo’s production brewery is to be sold to another Maine brewery before year’s end.

The new operator plans taproom renovations and build out of a restaurant space, they said.

“We are delighted that our successor is an experienced, successful Maine company who is as excited about Biddeford as we always have been,” the Bulls said. “Look ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: King’s Town Beer Company hands keys to its location over to Skeleton Park Brewery
Where one beer story ends, another begins. Such is the case with King’s Town Beer Company, which was the west end’s first craft brewery when it opened in late 2016. Earlier this month, King’s Town announced that it was no longer brewing beer and that they’d be handing the keys to their Arlington Park Place storefront over to Skeleton Park Brewery, the Kingstonist reported on August 30.

Skeleton Park had been a contract brewer, having their beer produced at existing breweries, for the past three years. Trevor Lehoux and his wife Becky Lu were finally ready to open a physical location. The owners of King’s Town, who never left their original business installing security systems, came calling, Lehoux and Lu were ready.

“King’s Town put in a good couple of years,” said Lehoux. “They focus on their security systems business, but they didn’t want to just close up shop and have everything go away, so they approached us to kinda take over for them. We’re selling our own beers right now, but we’ll be introducing one or two of their more popular beers at some point to kind of pay tribute to them.”

On tap now at Skeleton Park is their two ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Boatyard Brewing closing up shop after more than five years in operation
A staple of the West Michigan craft beer scene is closing up shop after more than five years, Fox17 reported on August 31.

Boatyard Brewing is becoming one of more than a dozen craft breweries in the state to tap out in the past year alone.

“It was economics. I mean there’s a certain amount of businesses you need to do every day to keep the doors open, we’ve been making headway on it and we were just not making it fast enough,” General Manager Pat Kleppert said.

“There’s some maturation of the marketplace and so everybody’s got their own business plan and how that business plan works within the market. There’s a lot of really great beer here in town,” Kleppert added.

Over the years, Boatyard has been known as the ‘happy brewery,” a legacy they hope lives on.

“If we can leave our mark on the area that we were a fun place to stop into and people really enjoyed themselves here, that seems to be what we are hearing from everybody,” Keppert, said.

Those memories were shared on Saturday as they tapped into the kegs for the final time.

For them the final day in business is a celebration, not a mourning.

“It’s bittersweet but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Madhouse Brewing Company closing its doors in Des Moines
After crafting beer in central Iowa for 10 years, Madhouse Brewing Company is closing its doors, DesMoinsesRegister.com reported on August 29.

The brewery at 501 Scott Ave., near downtown Des Moines will close at the end of September following a "last release" party where the company will sell its Neapolitan barrel-aged stout.

"We'd like to thank all of the people who have supported us over the years, many of whom have become good friends," reads a Facebook post about the release party.

The owner, Mason Groben, opened Madhouse Brewing Company after opening Jasper Winery with his parents in 2004. The brewery is known for its barrel-aged beers like its vanilla imperial porter and wide range of sours.

The first 200 people at the brewery's release party on Sept. 20 will receive a free Madhouse pint glass.

Brewery news Angola: Brewer Empresa Angolana de Cervejas running one production line only to reduce costs
The deactivation of the first filling line of Angolan beermaker EKA – Empresa Angolana de Cervejas due to the obsolete state of the equipment, which occurred last June, led to production dropping by 50.9% to 27,000 litres per hour, the company’s managing director Marc Mayer was quoted as saying by Macauhub on September 4.

Mayer said that the board of directors had chosen to keep only the second production line operational, which has a maximum capacity of 35,000 litres per hour, as it has lower costs and always has raw materials available from the market. .

Mayer also told the Angop news agency that the replacement of the first line requires an estimated investment of 200 million kwanzas (US$545,000), “which is slow to be executed because the company is experiencing a financial situation that requires consideration in order to avoid possible disruptions to the business portfolio.”

EKA, which is part of French-owned group Castel Angola, is located in Cambambe municipality, Kwanza Norte province, where it produces beer from water, malt, unmalted cereals such as corn and rice, and hops.

Brewery news South Korea & Japan: South Korea reduces imports of Japanese beer by 97% in August
South Korean imports of beer from Japan plunged 97% in August from a year earlier, amid a popular backlash against Japanese products that has spread as relations between the two countries sour, Bloomberg reported on September 3 citing a report by a local newspaper.

South Korea imported just $223,000 worth of Japanese beer in the month, down from $7.57 million a year earlier, the Maeil Business Newspaper said, citing preliminary data from Korea Customs Service. Japan has held the largest share of South Korean beer imports every year since 2010, with sales surging more than sixfold by 2018 to $78.3 million.

Japan’s largest publicly traded brewers such as Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd. all export beer to South Korea, and had in previous years cited growth in that market as promising.

The boycott of Japanese goods has spread since Tokyo first imposed export restrictions on key chip materials in July, and worsened as the spat grew to include South Korea’s preferential trade status and an intelligence-sharing agreement.

Consumer-facing brands have been hit particularly hard, with consumers boycotting clothing from Fast Retailing Co.’s Uniqlo, and sales of Japanese cars also falling. Tourism to Japan, a key economic driver of ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Asahi’s Green Beacon booted out of craft brewers association
Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon has been booted out of the national organisation overseeing the interests of hundreds of small craft brewers as that same group raises concerns with the competition regulator about Asahi's looming A$16 billion buyout of Carlton & United Breweries, The Australian Financial Review reported on September 2.

Green Beacon was acquired by Asahi on August 21, just four weeks after the Japanese group unveiled a much larger A$16 billion buyout proposal for Australia's biggest beer company, CUB, owner of mainstream beer brands Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Great Northern.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is conducting inquiries into the CUB buyout ahead of a decision earmarked for late October on whether it might insist on divestments before approving the transaction.

The Independent Brewers Association, which has hundreds of craft brewers as members, has raised a number of concerns with the ACCC about the CUB buyout as part of the regulator's process, with submissions closing on September 6.

Separately, it has already forced Green Beacon to depart from the IBA membership ranks following Asahi's acquisition of the Queensland group, because it is now part of a global conglomerate.

IBA president Jamie Cook said on September 2 that it was no longer ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic & UK: Small Czech brewers counting on higher exports to the UK after Brexit
The tiny craft brewery in a quaint Czech village near the border with Germany and Poland is perhaps an unlikely place to be plotting a Brexit strategy, Bloomberg reported on September 3.

Co-owner Viktor Tkadlec is betting his “clean taste without foreign additives” will help him elbow into the crowded U.K. market even after it leaves the European Union. Cvikov Pivovar is part of a group of Czech brewers aiming to break into Britain even as the country risks crashing out of the EU at the end of next month without any agreement to keep trade flowing.

“The U.K. market is very competitive and every pub has 10 to 15 types of beer,” said Tkadlec, who exported “tens” of barrels to British pubs in a test run this year. “We’re not an export brewer and we’ve never had that goal. But let’s see how it goes.”

While much of the Brexit focus has been on multinationals navigating potential customs barriers, the effort by Czech craft beer producers shows how Britain’s tortuous departure from the EU is resonating across the continent.

Brewery news India: Big beverage makers rush to capture India’s non-alcoholic malt drinks segment
Seeing big opportunity in the country’s non-alcoholic malt-drink market - a niche but potentially a high-volume category - global biggies such as Coca-Cola and Heineken have entered the beverage segment, the Outlook India reported on September 1.

A non-alcoholic malt drink is a high energy beverage, brewed in the same fashion as beer or ale. The beverage generally contains under 100 calories, compared to 300 of an average carbonated soft drink.

Besides Heineken, Anheuser-Busch InBev has also entered this segment to target the vast untapped market of people, who refrain from consuming alcohol. Coca-Cola has forayed into the niche category in a big way with its global brand Barbican.

In case of Coca-Cola, the entry aims at introduction of more healthy options in the F&B segment.

The company launched a pilot project six months back to introduce the product which is targeted at the youth. "We introduced Barbican, a non-alcoholic malt-based beverages, in select Indian markets," a senior company official said.

Similarly, it was consumer demand for no-alcohol brews that led United Breweries to launch Heineken 0.0 which caters to the segment of health-conscious, young adults.

"The product tastes like a beer with no alcohol. It is targeted at people, who want to drink a beer-tasting ...More info on site

Brewery news India: AB InBev’s plea to put New Delhi beer sales ban on hold rejected by court
An Indian court on September 3 rejected a request from Anheuser-Busch InBev to stay a three-year sales ban imposed by New Delhi city authorities, dealing another setback for the world’s largest brewer in one of the country’s key markets, Reuters reported.

Authorities in New Delhi barred AB InBev in July from selling its beer in the New Delhi market on allegations of evading local state taxes. The company has denied the allegations.

The state’s excise commissioner, who is already hearing an appeal against the ban order, had rejected a request from the company to hold off implementing the ban, Reuters reported last month.

The company’s plea against the city government was heard at the Delhi High Court on September 3, where Justice Navin Chawla declined to give any immediate relief and said the appeals process before the state authorities must first be completed.

“Why have two parallel proceedings,” said Chawla.

The city government’s ban order followed a three-year investigation which found that beer maker SABMiller - acquired by AB InBev in 2016 for around $100 billion - used duplicate barcodes on its beer bottles supplied to city retailers that year, allowing it to pay lower levies.

Brewery news Kenya: Embu County’s largest brewer switches to maize meal and animal feed production
The largest beer manufacturer in Kenya’s Embu County has stopped operations permanently in what the management attributes to declining sales, arising from interference by State agencies, The Standard reported on September 3.

Mountain Slopes Commercial Services, which produced Kingmaster Opaque Special Beer for over a decade, announced to employees and the public that it would cease operations starting this month and shift focus to maize meal and animal feed production.

“For many years we fought, but we lost the market. Even when we bounced back, we did not find a vibrant business like before. We have decided to close it down,” said the company’s Managing Director Samuel Muriuki.

“The region is a major producer of maize. We decided to focus on adding value to what is available. This will shield our employees from losing jobs. We don’t expect similar frustrations from the Government.”

He said the plant is now up for leasing to investors in the manufacturing sector.

Until 2015, the firm was doing well for years but suffered a blow after it was closed down intermittently due to failure to obtain one permit from the Government.

The brewery started operations in Nairobi County over a decade ago, and in its heydays, it used to employ ...More info on site
