Barley news Canada: Barley ending stocks down 28% versus 2017-18
Canada’s total barley ending stocks of 893,000 tonnes as of July 31 are down by 28 per cent from 2017-18 and well below the five-year average of 1.6 million tonnes, according to updated data Statistics Canada released on September 6.

StatsCan said solid demand for both feed and malt barley caused exports and domestic usage to increase on the year.

Canadian canola ending stocks hit a new record for the 2018-19 crop year, coming in at 3.9 million tonnes, up by 55 per cent on the year and about 800,000 tonnes above the previous record set in July 2014. The large stocks compare with the previous five-year average of 2.3 million tonnes. On-farm canola stocks of 2.6 million tonnes were up by one million from the previous year.

Record supplies going into the marketing year, coupled with a slowdown in export demand, contributed to the large ending stocks, according to StatsCan. The government agency noted exports were down by 12.9 per cent on the year, due largely to a million-tonne reduction in sales to China.

The ICE Futures canola market had little reaction to the data, as the stocks were largely in line with trade expectations.

While canola stocks were record-large, the barley carryout hit ...More info on site

Hops news USA: John I. Haas announces investment in Yakima Valley Hops
Yakima-based hops supplier John I. Haas announced its investment in Yakima Valley Hops on September 5 — a move that will help both businesses expand and innovate, YakTriNews.com reported.

The investment will extend John I. Haas's reach nationally in the small craft brewing and home brewing markets.

Jeff Perkins, the co-owner of the online hop distribution company Yakima Valley Hops said, "This partnership allows us to get the highest quality hops into the marketplace not only for home brewers and craft brewers alike locally but also nationally."

Yakima Valley Hops makes it easy for brewers to access a variety of hops, including the most in-demand and newest experimental hops from around the world.

Perkins said the company has seen substantial growth in the past few years. It serves over 40,000 home brewers and thousands of craft brewers through their online business. He said the partnership will allow them to better serve the small craft brewing and home brewing markets they already work with.

Alex Barth, the CEO of John I. Haas said, "It's an area where we were not involved in before, and we're really excited to become a part of that."

Perkins said the investment has allowed them to start ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Chaos Brewery coming to downtown Joplin
In the not-too-distant future, something other than coffee will be brewing in downtown Joplin, the Joplin Globe reported on September 8.

Chaos Brewery is coming to the former J.B.’s Piano Bar at 112 S. Main St. This historic storefront is getting a complete makeover in preparation for a possible opening in November. The opening date will hinge on the obtaining of permits and licenses. Breweries are highly regulated.

This brewery is being opened by Dale Clark Jr., Daniel Crawford and Frank Ikerd, all of Joplin. This is their first venture of this kind. How these partners came together shows the importance of networking. Lori Haun, with the Downtown Joplin Alliance, connected the dots.

“Dale Clark told me he was looking for a site,” Haun said. “And then Frank Ikerd contacted me. I got them together, and now it looks like we’re getting a brewery. I think they’re going to do a fantastic job.”

Haun said a survey conducted last summer showed that a downtown brewery “was in the top three of what people wanted. It is a key thing for the downtown.”

It’s the kind of thing that drives visitors to a downtown area.

The arrival of the brewery is already having an effect on the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Vicious Cycle Brewing gets approval to launch in Fraser
Another new brewery is going up in the Fraser Valley, Sky-Hi News reported on September 7.

Vicious Cycle Brewing applied with the town of Fraser for its Economic Development Benefits. The board of trustees unanimously approved the request and wished the owners well in their endeavors.

Vicious Cycle will go in at 751 S Zerex. Building plans indicate it will be a 4,700 square foot brewery.

Nathan Watt, an owner of the family-run Vicious Cycle, said he hopes to open by fall of 2020 or early 2021.

Brewery news USA, OH: Cincy Brewing Co. launches in Cincinnati
Rivertown Brewing's former home in Lockland has new life as another brewery reopens those doors to the public, the Cincinnati Business Center reported on September 5.

Cincy Brewing Co. hosted its grand opening on Aug. 26 at 607 Shepherd Dr. in Lockland in the space Rivertown occupied before that brewery moved to a larger space in Monroe in 2017.

The brewery is a project by Rob Rosen, an attorney and former captain and judge advocate in the U.S. Army. The Cincinnati native currently lives in Albuquerque, N.M., but wanted to open something in his hometown with the goal of moving back to the Queen City.

Cincy Brewing Co. has a full liquor license and sells wine and cocktails as well as its own brews on draft. The taproom is anchored by community tables in its center with giant Jenga, cornhole, chalkboards and TVs to entertain guests and families.

The brewery is currently open Thursday 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 4 to 11 p.m. and Saturday noon to 11 p.m.

Brewery news USA, GA: Social Fox Brewing to become Norcross’ first craft brewery
Social Fox Brewing is on tap to open in Norcross’ Skin Alley in Jan. 2020, making it the city’s first craft brewery in the downtown area, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on September 5.

Owned by Scott Norwood, Kevin Keyes and Mike Green, the brewery will include an on-site taproom which will initially feature five core beers along with seasonal and small-batch releases. By year two, the partners hope to distribute their beverages with Modern Hops as their distributor.

In a unique partnership, Social Fox Brewing will work with nearby restaurants to complement their beverage options and in turn allow brewery patrons to order in food. In addition to the three partners, the company plans on hiring one brewer, one full-time manager, and a team of part-time bar staff.

Brewery news USA, NC: Gypsy Road Brewing finally brewing in Kernersville
Gypsy Road Brewing Co. is finally brewing, the Greensboro News & Record reported on September 4.

The business opened in September 2018 as a taproom, selling others’ craft beers. “Our taproom was ready, but we didn’t have all our (brewing) permits,” said co-owner Tammy Coulter. “It took longer than we hoped, but it’s been worth it.”

Coulter owns the brewery with her husband, John, and minority partner Taylor Thornton.

Gypsy Road still is selling others’ beers among its 12 taps, but now is an actual brewery, with permits in place and brewer Adam Norman working a three-barrel system full time.

So far, Gypsy Road has three of its beers available: Wit My Whistle Watermelon Wheat, Hazy IPA and Macy Grove Pale Ale. A double IPA should be tapped any day now.

Gypsy Road will continue to offer other N.C. beers in the near future — including those from Trophy, Bhavana and Bond Brothers — but will gradually change taps over to Gypsy Road beers as its production increases.

The Coulters’ interest in the brewery grew out of their other business, 421 Market and Grill, a combination country store and restaurant that John Coulter has run for about six years.

“We added a patio for live music, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Zony Mash Beer Project to open in New Orleans in October
The Zony Mash Beer Project, a brewery, tasting room, restaurant and performance venue, will open in October in the space formerly home to Wayward Owl Brewing Company in the former Gem Theater at 3940 Thalia St. in New Orleans, The Advocate reported on September 4.

Zony Mash is the brainchild of Adam Ritter, a Philadelphia native whose love affair with New Orleans began with a stint at Tulane University. The brewery name is taken from an album of rarities and unreleased songs by The Meters.

Ritter, who owned several bar and restaurant operations in Philadelphia, moved with his family to New Orleans five years ago.

After purchasing a building across the street, Ritter began spending time at Wayward Owl.

“This was my watering hole after I would get done with work,” Ritter says.

Ritter met brewing aficionado Mitchell Grittman, and the two started experimenting with home brewing and talked about opening a brewery. When Wayward Owl closed in 2018 and the building and brewing equipment became available, Ritter and Grittman took the plunge.

“We wanted to do something super small scale, small batch and artisanal, and this place presented itself,” Ritter says. “We weren’t necessarily thinking about doing a venue/brewery, but it’s all here. We just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Trustworthy Brewing Co. already open in Grand Canal Shoppes in Las Vegas
Since the shutdown of brewing operations at the Monte Carlo Brew Pub more than a decade ago, the Strip in Las Vegas has been devoid of an operating brewery. But with the recent opening of Trustworthy Brewing Co. in the Grand Canal Shoppes, the dry spell is about to end, the Las Vegas Weekly reported on September 5.

“About to” because while Trustworthy is now open, it has not yet begun brewing on the premises. Still, you can enjoy brews shipped from the company’s main production facility in Burbank, California, while partaking in the culinary offerings by chef Lloyd Bansil, a Strip veteran.

Trustworthy’s mainline beers, including the easy drinking Gigil rice pilsner—apropos for the torrid Vegas summer—and the more robust Brass Jar hoppy amber ale, have been available in the Valley for the past year, including at Morels Steakhouse, just off the Palazzo lobby.

But at the new operation on the second floor, more specialty brews are available, making the journey into the depths of the Palazzo well-worth the effort. There you’ll find Trustworthy’s second anniversary brew, Turning Two, a barrel-aged blended golden sour that doesn’t overpower with tartness. Equally intriguing is the Great American Beer Festival bronze-winning Bear Temper barleywine, surprisingly ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Fergus Brewing Co. almost open in Fergus Falls
Mounted on the northernmost wall of the brewing space, Saint Arnold of Metz presides over the final preparations at the nearly-opened Fergus Brewing Co., The Growler reported on September 4.

“He’s the patron saint of brewers,” shares head brewer Andy Beck. “He watches over me when I brew. He got a lot of people to drink beer instead of the contaminated water, so he saved a bunch of lives.”

Despite his stern demeanor (do patron saints ever really look happy?), Arnold clearly favors Beck’s work. With a grand opening tentatively scheduled for mid-September, Fergus Brewing Co. has already generated major excitement in their hometown.

“We got Best Beer at the Fergus Beer Tour. We got Best Brewery at [Fergus Falls] Summerfest… [and] … the Downtown Chowdown was kind of a collaboration win [with Dining Car #423], so we’ll take it!”

Then again, collaboration and community are what Fergus Brewing are all about. “We’re all from the Fergus community,” Beck explains. “A lot of places were closing, so we wanted to do something to bring something back. This spot had sat vacant for a long time. It’s such a prominent spot for Fergus and Fergus history.” It used to be a scale house for a ...More info on site

Brewery news France: Heineken buys minority stake in craft brewer Gallia
Dutch brewing giant Heineken has acquired a minority stake in French craft brewer Gallia in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis), Le Figaro reported on September 7.

Gallia was founded 10 years ago and currently employs 15 people. The company intends to launch a new production facility in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) by autumn 2020 and thus add another dozen of jobs. The new brewery’s planned production capacity is 50 thousand hl, whereas Gallia’s total beer sales last year amounted to 7850 hl, or EUR2.4 mln in money terms.

Commenting Heineken’s acquisition, one of Gallia’s founders Jacques Ferté said: “It’s a challenge, but we keep the control over the brand and especially our craft beers.”

“Buying a minority stake isn’t a traditional approach for us. Normally, we acquire full control. For a brewery of this kind to achieve its goals, it has to remain independent,” Heineken France president Pascal Sabrié said.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries Limited top executives see bonuses rise due to higher sales and profit
Rising beer sales and profit have delivered triple-digit growth in the bonuses of East African Breweries Limited (EABL) top executives, the Business Daily reported on September 9.

This saw the brewer’s managing director’s annual pay grow by more than a fifth to cross the Sh100 million mark in the year to June.

Bonuses paid to CEO Andrew Cowan, Jane Karuku (managing director of Kenya Breweries Limited) and Gyorgy Geiszl (the finance director) recorded triple-digit growth on the back of a 59 percent growth in profits to Sh11.5 billion, the EABL annual report shows.

This lifted Mr Cowan’s pay to Sh115.7 million or Sh9.6 million per month in the period to June, reflecting a 21.7 percent increase.

The strong profit performance was attributed to the 11 percent growth in volumes and a 12 percent surge in sales to Sh82.53 billion, marking the first time the brewer had grown profits since 2016.

Mr Cowan earned a salary of Sh35.8 million in that period, representing an increase of 2.43 per cent from a year earlier with his bonus having grown 145.3 percent to Sh24.5 million.

In the period to June, Mr Cowan also took home Sh55.3 million in perks, up 10.55 percent from Sh50 million a year earlier while ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries gearing up to launch new products in ‘craft’ and ‘variety’ beer segments
India’s largest beer maker United Breweries Limited (UBL) is gearing up to launch its new products in the ‘craft’ (mild beer) and ‘variety’ beer segments this year, the Deccan Herald reported on September 8.

The move comes after the company received an encouraging response for its non-alcoholic beverage ‘Kingfisher Radler’ last year and ‘Heineken 0.0 recently, in order to increase its sales and capture growth in the segment.

“There has been a growth of brew pubs in the country as well as the launch of niche craft beer brands in the last few years. This aids in the development of a beer culture in the country,” the company said in its latest annual report.

UBL’s move to enter a new category comes in view of the growing popularity of brew pubs in the country, which have their own brands. “Although India’s craft beer industry is still nascent, the craft beer segment and demand for premium beer in general in estimated to be growing at a strong double-digit rate, albeit from a low base,” UBL said.

The craft beer or mild beer market is rapidly growing in India with first-time alcohol consumers preferring to consume craft beer, said an analyst.

Last year, the company had ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine exports 47% more grain in current marketing year
Since the beginning of the 2019/2020 marketing year (MY), Ukraine has exported more than 10 million tonnes of grain crops, which is 47% more than in the same period of the last MY, the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection reported on September 8.

"Since the beginning of the current marketing year, which started on July 1, Ukraine has exported more than 10 million tonnes of grain crops. In particular, Ukraine exported 6.1 million tonnes of wheat (including about 4.3 million tonnes of milling wheat and over 1.8 million tonnes of feed wheat), about 2.2 million tonnes of barley and 1.7 million tonnes of corn," the report said.

During the same period of the last marketing year, Ukraine exported 6.8 million tonnes of grain, in particular 3.7 million tonnes of wheat, 1.6 million tonnes of barley and 1.3 million tonnes of corn.

In addition, 1.8 million tonnes of oilseeds have been exported since the start of the current MY. Over the same period of the last marketing year, Ukraine exported 1.2 million tonnes of oilseeds.

Brewery news South Africa: SAB could start brewing Guinness locally if sales increase
If within the next three years South Africans take a liking to iconic Irish beer Guinness, South African Breweries (SAB) could be forced to start brewing it locally under the terms of a new deal, Business Insider South Africa reported on September 9.

But South Africa would have to really take to the dark stout, consuming what Business Insider South Africa understands is the equivalent of more than 4.5 million cans of Guinness every year for that provision to kick in.

Last week SAB, the local subsidiary of beer giant AB InBev, won the approval of the Competition Tribunal to take over local distribution of some products made by its competitor Diageo, including Smirnoff-branded flavoured drinks and Guinness.

The deal represents "the beginning of a chapter for Guinness in SA which will now be sold through a dedicated beer route to market," Diageo said in a statement.

The reach of SAB's distribution infrastructure is the stuff of legend in its industry, and should put Guinness on more shelves and in more bars than ever.

As a condition of its approval of the deal – which effectively removes a competitor from the beer market – the Competition Tribunal stipulated that SAB must start producing Guinness draught ...More info on site
