USA: Number of US breweries forecast to reach 9,200 by 2021
|
The number of U.S. breweries is forecast to swell to 9,200 in the next two years, according to a Brewers Association (BA) report. There are currently more than 7,600 breweries in the U.S.
Using the BA’s brewery database and TTB permit data, BA chief economist Bart Watson predicts nearly 2,000 breweries will open by this time in 2021. He writes that “our two methods of analysis suggest somewhere between 1,900-2,400 openings in the next two years.” But, he adds, “[a]ny forecasting analysis is going to rely on current trend data, and trends can shift pretty quickly.”
In other words, the rate at which breweries are closing and opening may change, but the data shows that many Americans still see opening a brewery as a viable option.
Nine thousand breweries is an alarmingly high number — how can the population possibly consume all that beer? — but it could be good for the beer industry overall. The fastest-growing breweries aren’t the ones casting a wide distribution net, they’re the “mom and pop” operations keeping their beer close to home.

India: New Delhi police probing case of alleged tax evasion involving AB InBev
|
Police in India’s capital New Delhi are probing a case of alleged tax evasion involving Anheuser-Busch InBev, according to a police officer and a document seen by Reuters, a setback for the brewer already battling a three-year city ban.
Local authorities barred AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer, in July from selling its beer in the high profile New Delhi market for evading taxes. The company has denied the allegations and appealed the order.
The Delhi ban followed an investigation by city authorities which found that beer maker SABMiller - acquired by AB InBev in 2016 for around $100 billion - used duplicate barcodes on its beer bottles supplied to city retailers that year, allowing it to pay lower taxes.
The Delhi government’s ban order had also called for further action against the company and a local bar outlet for alleged violation of criminal law provisions such as conspiracy, cheating and forgery.
A senior Delhi police official, Anant Kumar Gunjan, told Reuters that officers have launched an investigation into the case after receiving a request from the city government, a move that could potentially lead to criminal charges.

Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel’s purchase of majority stake in Founders Brewing valued at $198.8 mln
|
Documents filed with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission show Spanish brewing conglomerate Mahou San Miguel’s deal to purchase a majority stake in Founders Brewing Co. is valued at $198.8 million, MLive.com reported on September 13.
That figure was listed as the price Mahou would pay for a 59 percent stake in Founders, according to a purchase agreement and other documents obtained by MLive/The Grand Rapids Press through the Freedom of Information Act.
The deal, announced last month, will boost Mahou’s ownership stake in Founders from about 30 percent to 90 percent.
Mahou purchased a roughly 30 percent stake in Founders in 2014. Liquor control commission records show that transaction was valued at $96.3 million.
In a statement, Founders said the purchase price referenced in the liquor control commission records represents an “inaccurate assumptions as to value.” The company declined to elaborate.
Pending state and federal approvals, the deal is expected to close next year. Founders co-founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers will each retain a 5 percent stake in the company.

Cyprus: Beer deliveries increase 35% in January-August this year
|
Total beer deliveries in Cyprus went down by 507,890 litres in August 2019 compared with the same month a year ago, according to figures released by the statistical service, the Cyprus Mail reported on September 13.
At the same time, a significant increase of 35 per cent was recorded in the period between January and August 2019, compared with the same period last year.
Total beer deliveries from factories amounted to 4,725,425 litres in August compared with 5,233,315 in August 2018, down by 9.7 per cent or 507,890 litres.
Deliveries for local consumption fell to 4,610,152 litres compared with 5,060,587 litres last year in August, down by 8.9 per cent.
On the other hand, beer exports dropped to 115,273 litres in August this year, compared with 172,728 litres in August 2018, a sharp decline of 33.2 per cent.
However, exports in the first seven months of 2019 increased significantly by 35 per cent to 1,169,859 litres, an improvement compared with the 863,697 litres exported from January to July 2018.

South Korea & Japan: South Korea reduces Japanese beer imports in August by 97%
|
South Korean imports of Japanese beer fell 97 percent in August from a year earlier due to a boycott of Japanese products amid a bilateral trade spat, the Yonhap News reported on September 16.
The value of imports of Japanese beer came to US$223,000 in August, compared with $7.56 million in the same period of last year, according to the data from the Korea Customs Service (KCS).
The sharp decline came as many South Korean consumers joined a boycott of Japanese goods in anger at Tokyo's trade curbs against Seoul.
In July, Tokyo imposed tighter regulations on exports to Seoul of three materials -- resist, etching gas and fluorinated polyimide -- that are critical for the production of semiconductors and flexible displays.
Japan later removed South Korea from its "whitelist" of trusted trading partners in retaliation against last year's South Korean Supreme Court rulings ordering Japanese firms to compensate South Korean victims of forced labor during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
Japan claims that all compensation was settled when the two countries normalized their diplomatic ties in 1965.

Cameroon: SABC sources about 30% of raw ingredients for its brewing operations locally

From January to August 2019, Cameroonian brewer SABC spent more than XAF21 billion to purchase local agricultural raw materials and inputs used in beer production, Business in Cameroon reported on September 16.
According to the company, this is about 29.6% of the XAF71 billion it used to purchase all of the products needed during the period under review.
Overall, it purchased about XAF9.5 billion of sugar and corn grits from local producers. Officially, this represents 29% of the XAF32.5 billion spent on agricultural raw materials. In 2018, the purchase of agricultural raw materials from local producers made up 44% (XAF16.5 billion) of funds used in that segment.
For locally purchased inputs, the company estimates it to be XAF11.6 billion or 30% of its overall purchase in January-August 2019.
With these purchases, SABC had a strong impact on the sales of some local companies. An example is the case of Maïserie du Cameroun (Maiscam), an agribusiness company located in the northern region that supplies 100% of its corn grits (10,000 tons) to SABC, leader of the Cameroonian brewery sector. Canada: Barley production up 19.2% this year
|
Oat production in Canada grew by 16.9 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, and barley production was up by 19.2 percent, according to a recent Statistics Canada survey, based in part on satellite and agroclimatic data.
The survey also said that all-wheat production increased by 0.9 percent, while canola production was expected to decline by 4.8 percent. Durum output, the wheat used to make pasta, was pegged at 5.0 million tonnes.
Statscan said that dry conditions since the beginning of the growing season persisted in most of Manitoba and southern Alberta, while moisture conditions were better in other parts of the Prairies, helping to improve crop yields and production estimates.
Production estimates for Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are calculated using model-based yields. Estimates for Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and British Columbia are all carried forward from the July estimates of principal field crop production.

Kenya: Kensington Distillers & Vintners announces entry into Kenyan market
|
Kensington Distillers & Vintners (KDV) London, a premium drinks business with a growing foot-print in Africa has announced its entry into the Kenyan market, The Star reported on September 14.
The firm which East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) lost Popov Vodka distribution rights to, is coming in as 'Monument Distillers Kenya' , adding pressure on current market players in the lucrative alcoholic beverage sector.
Sazerac, leading US spirits company, has granted Monument Distillers the distribution rights for its portfolio in Kenya with the most prominent brands being Popov Vodka, Southern Comfort, Myers Rum, Paddy’s Irish Whisky, Firewater, and Buffalo Trace Bourbon.
As part of this transition, Monument will be distributing these products through their distribution partner Maxam Limited, a local liquor distributor in Kenya and East Africa.
The entry of Kensington Distillers into the Kenyan market follows the successful launch of Monument Distillers Nigeria last year.
Monument Distillers Kenya managing director Ellis Muhimbise said: “It’s a great time for us to take on this heritage brand, Popov Vodka. The vodka category is showing favourable growth as Kenya’s strong economic climate continues.”
According to the 2019 International Wine and Spirits Report, the vodka category in Kenya grew 22 per cent annually from 2013 to 2018.
