Brewery news USA: Number of US breweries forecast to reach 9,200 by 2021
The number of U.S. breweries is forecast to swell to 9,200 in the next two years, according to a Brewers Association (BA) report. There are currently more than 7,600 breweries in the U.S.

Using the BA’s brewery database and TTB permit data, BA chief economist Bart Watson predicts nearly 2,000 breweries will open by this time in 2021. He writes that “our two methods of analysis suggest somewhere between 1,900-2,400 openings in the next two years.” But, he adds, “[a]ny forecasting analysis is going to rely on current trend data, and trends can shift pretty quickly.”

In other words, the rate at which breweries are closing and opening may change, but the data shows that many Americans still see opening a brewery as a viable option.

Nine thousand breweries is an alarmingly high number — how can the population possibly consume all that beer? — but it could be good for the beer industry overall. The fastest-growing breweries aren’t the ones casting a wide distribution net, they’re the “mom and pop” operations keeping their beer close to home.

Barley news Canada: Barley production up 19.2% this year
Oat production in Canada grew by 16.9 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, and barley production was up by 19.2 percent, according to a recent Statistics Canada survey, based in part on satellite and agroclimatic data.

The survey also said that all-wheat production increased by 0.9 percent, while canola production was expected to decline by 4.8 percent. Durum output, the wheat used to make pasta, was pegged at 5.0 million tonnes.

Statscan said that dry conditions since the beginning of the growing season persisted in most of Manitoba and southern Alberta, while moisture conditions were better in other parts of the Prairies, helping to improve crop yields and production estimates.

Production estimates for Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are calculated using model-based yields. Estimates for Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and British Columbia are all carried forward from the July estimates of principal field crop production.

Brewery news Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel’s purchase of majority stake in Founders Brewing valued at $198.8 mln
Documents filed with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission show Spanish brewing conglomerate Mahou San Miguel’s deal to purchase a majority stake in Founders Brewing Co. is valued at $198.8 million, MLive.com reported on September 13.

That figure was listed as the price Mahou would pay for a 59 percent stake in Founders, according to a purchase agreement and other documents obtained by MLive/The Grand Rapids Press through the Freedom of Information Act.

The deal, announced last month, will boost Mahou’s ownership stake in Founders from about 30 percent to 90 percent.

Mahou purchased a roughly 30 percent stake in Founders in 2014. Liquor control commission records show that transaction was valued at $96.3 million.

In a statement, Founders said the purchase price referenced in the liquor control commission records represents an “inaccurate assumptions as to value.” The company declined to elaborate.

Pending state and federal approvals, the deal is expected to close next year. Founders co-founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers will each retain a 5 percent stake in the company.

Mahou’s move to purchase Founders, the largest brewery in the state, made waves in Michigan’s craft beer community. After the deal was announced, Stevens told MLive that the change will help Founders break into new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Royal Oak’s Roak Brewing Company preparing to acquire Marshall-based Dark Horse Brewing
Dark Horse Brewing may have new owners soon, but the name, the beer and the taphouse aren’t going anywhere, the incoming CEO was quoted as saying by MILive.com on September 12.

Royal Oak’s Roak Brewing Company is preparing to acquire Marshall-based Dark Horse, according to filings with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and Roak CEO John Leone.

The deal could take three-plus months, as the transfer of ownership must be approved by the MLCC. The application was filed Sept. 6, per state records.

Leone has long been a fan of Dark Horse, and said it's the "coolest place."

"To me, Dark Horse is one of the legendary breweries in Michigan," Leone said. "Dark Horse is a great brand, but it's had some challenges. We want to get it back to where it was a few years back."

The two breweries will keep their own names and styles, Leone said. Dark Horse first opened a brewpub in 1997 and built its current taproom and beer garden on Kalamazoo Avenue in 2000. Roak opened its brewhouse and taproom in 2015.

Changes planned include a unified sales force and sharing of resources, Leone said. Beer fans can also expect to see some Roak beers at Dark Horse and Dark ...More info on site

Hops news USA, MI: Michigan’s hops-growing industry reports an interesting season
The Michigan hops-growing industry has had an interesting season, the Traverse City Record Eagle reported on September 11.

Some farms have done well. A few have been hassled by an unexpected insect pest. Some are stumbling under market pressures.

“Sales and marketing, I think, is the big issue — and whether we have the cultivars that brewers are looking for as they’re trying to differentiate themselves in that increasingly competitive marketplace,” said Rob Sirrine, a community food systems educator with Michigan State University’s Extension Service in Leelanau County.

A large number of Michigan growers invested heavily in two or three popular hop varieties, including Cascade, he said, and the law of supply and demand drove down prices during the last couple of years. That led growers to rethink how they grow hops.

About 40 hops operations now are active in Michigan, Sirrine said, including 10 or 12 in northwest Lower Michigan. They range in size from one acre to much larger.

One of the largest operations in Michigan is MiLocal Hops in Williamsburg, which grows on 220 acres. It is doing fine, but has had to make adjustments.

“Over the last two years, MiLocal Hops has ripped out over 40 acres of Cascade, and we’ve diversified ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Alberta cuts markup for small brewers
Starting Friday, September 13, eligible small beer brewers are now able to apply for a reduced markup from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), a move that could cut the fee one brewer pays the provincial government to sell its booze by almost 50 per cent, the Edmonton Journal reported.

“It’s small, but obviously has a big impact. It is a success in that there is predictability — and it stayed the same for the bulk of our membership,” said Mike McNeil, executive director of the Alberta Small Brewers Association.

The change solved an “urgent” issue for Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery, which was being assessed at the same rate as much larger beer manufacturers, McNeil said.

After the province announced the change, a press release from Big Rock said that the company anticipated it would significantly reduce the corporation’s overall beer tax.

Big Rock can now take advantage of reduced markup rates along with every other brewer that produces less than 400,000 hectolitres per year.

AGLC adds a markup to the liquor it sells to liquor licensees, and that markup goes to the government’s general revenue fund.

Reduced markup rates are graduated, depending on how much a brewer produces each year. The rate begins at 10 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Deep Cuts Deli planning new Somerville brewery next year
Deep Cuts Deli, a prolific north-of-Boston pop-up operation, has officially signed on an in-house beer-maker—and the now-larger team is planning to open Deep Cuts Deli and Brewery in Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood next year, bostonmagazine.com reported on September 11.

Besides making its own beers (and providing a platform for local artists), Deep Cuts Brewery plans to collaborate with other makers—and you can taste the debut effort later this month, created in conjunction with Bone Up Brewing Co. The sandwich pop-up also has a robust schedule of other events this month, including a Monday afternoon residency at the Automatic.

This isn’t the first time Deep Cuts has made inroads to the brewery world. The pop-up sandwich shop opened a “permanent” location inside Everett’s BearMoose Brewing Co. earlier this summer. Permanent, it was not. The partnership lasted two short weeks before Deep Cuts founder Ian McGregor parted ways with BearMoose’s Andrew Gilman, citing “creative differences.” (The Everett brewery is now open Thursday-Sunday with rotating pop-up food options.)

Jeff Wetzel, cofounder of BearMoose, left with McGregor. The longtime homebrewer (and architect) is now a Deep Cuts partner, alongside front-of-house manager Daniel Hastings (State Park, Dave’s Fresh Pasta). The trio has submitted a special zoning request ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Thorn Brewing arrives in Mission Hills
Mission Hills has historically been a wine and cocktail-centric neighborhood, due at least in part to the fact it has lacked what most other Mid-City neighborhoods have in abundance: a craft beer taproom. That predilection is poised to change now that Thorn Brewing has arrived, the San Diego Magazine reported on September 12.

Thorn Brewing originally opened in 2012 as Thorn Street Brewery as part of the first wave of craft breweries in North Park (which is hard to even fathom now). They subsequently moved the bulk of their brewing operations to a large facility and second tasting room in Barrio Logan in 2017, again preceding the majority of breweries currently operating in that area. Their third and most recent location at 4026 Hawk Street puts them squarely at the forefront of that neighborhood’s nascent craft beer scene.

Being the first brewery in any area tends to provide a competitive advantage, but the beer has to back it up. In my experience, Thorn has evolved from fairly so-so to surprisingly palatable and innovative. Some of their brews are more gimmicky than gratifying (I see you, pumpkin latte-inspired gose), but overall quality has noticeably increased in tandem with their output.

Quality has also increased ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Loose Ends Brewing Company to open new location in Centerville
Loose Ends Brewing Company is planning a new commercial location at the Centerville Shopping Center, WDTN.com reported on September 13.

The plans include an onsite brewing operation with a 175-seat brewpub and a patio on the north side of the building.

“We have heard loud and clear the interest in more craft brewing options. The fact that this is a father-son team makes their story all the more unique. Loose Ends Brewing Company will be a terrific complement to the dining and entertainment offerings already in the Centerville Shopping Center as well as those that will be coming in the future as the nearby Centerville Place development moves forward,” Centerville Economic Development Administrator Michael Norton-Smith said.

The brewery is expected to open in spring of 2020.

Brewery news USA, NY: Wild East Brewery coming to Gowanus in early October
A new brewery is hopping into Gowanus. Wild East Brewery plans to open its tap lines in early October, when it will welcome Brooklyn beer fans to its swanky new spot, the brewery’s co-founder was quoted as saying by the Brooklyn Paper on September 14.

“It’s going to be a really sleek, streamlined, modern design,” said Tyler March. “We’ll have a horseshoe shaped bar coming off one of the side walls, and there’s a back wall that’s mostly glass, so you can look straight into the production space.”

The taproom will boast seating for up to 90 beer aficionados, and will have tap lines for 20 brews — all of which will soon flow with one of Wild East’s hazy hop creations, said March.

“Our niche is farmhouse style beers. We want to do a lot mixed fermentation, and a lot of barrel aging stuff,” said March. “You can call it more rustic style beers — cloudy, hazy, fresh.”

March said that he and his two brewing partners, who have already had some success as homebrewers, will scour the state for as many ingredients for their brew as possible. The New York hops and grains will provide drinkers with an unexpectedly rich taste, according ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: BarrelHouse Brewing Co. to open new taproom in Fresno
BarrelHouse Brewing Co. plans to open a taproom in Fresno – but just where it’s opening is a secret, the Fresno Bee reported on September 11.

The popular Paso Robles-based craft brewery has a following in the Valley, with a large tap room in Visalia and another in San Luis Obispo.

BarrelHouse’s founders were at the California Food Expo on September 10 and decided to announce their news after interacting with the public and potential buyers, said Chris Vaughn, marketing manager and one of the founders. The founders are all from Lemoore, with one still living in the area.

BarrelHouse plans to open the tap room in summer of 2020.

But for now, you’ll just have to take guesses as to where it will be, Vaughn said.

“No, we’re keeping it a secret,” he said. “It’s something we’ve done with all of our locations.”

The tap room will be 6,000 square feet, with a large outdoor patio space. It will have a small stage for live bands and dogs will be allowed, he said. It won’t have a restaurant, but customers are encouraged to bring in food. Like the other tap rooms, it will have large roll-up doors that can be opened on nice days.

Vaughn knows ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Silver Spring Township’s Harty Brewing Co. temporarily closed
A West Shore brewer has closed, PennLive.com reported on September 10.

Harty Brewing Co. owners Michael Harty and Lauren Ishaq took to Facebook on Sept. 7 to share the news the brewery in Silver Spring Township is temporarily closed.

In the post they said the shutdown is due to unforeseen legal issues and are working diligently to resolve those issues.

The couple opened the nano brewery and 30-seat taproom in 2016 at 146 Walden Way in the community developed by Charter Homes & Neighborhoods. It's in the same complex as Sophia's at Walden restaurant.

When contacted by PennLive, the couple said they could not comment about the legal issues at this time. In the post, they apologized and thanked customers and indicated they will let everyone know when business resumes.

“We want to apologize for an inconvenience or letdown,” they wrote.

In 2017, Harty announced plans to open a satellite location in Camp Hill but those plans fell through.

Brewery news India: New Delhi police probing case of alleged tax evasion involving AB InBev
Police in India’s capital New Delhi are probing a case of alleged tax evasion involving Anheuser-Busch InBev, according to a police officer and a document seen by Reuters, a setback for the brewer already battling a three-year city ban.

Local authorities barred AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer, in July from selling its beer in the high profile New Delhi market for evading taxes. The company has denied the allegations and appealed the order.

The Delhi ban followed an investigation by city authorities which found that beer maker SABMiller - acquired by AB InBev in 2016 for around $100 billion - used duplicate barcodes on its beer bottles supplied to city retailers that year, allowing it to pay lower taxes.

The Delhi government’s ban order had also called for further action against the company and a local bar outlet for alleged violation of criminal law provisions such as conspiracy, cheating and forgery.

A senior Delhi police official, Anant Kumar Gunjan, told Reuters that officers have launched an investigation into the case after receiving a request from the city government, a move that could potentially lead to criminal charges.

“We are investigating this, it is under inquiry,” said Gunjan, adding that police would conduct its own ...More info on site

Brewery news Cyprus: Beer deliveries increase 35% in January-August this year
Total beer deliveries in Cyprus went down by 507,890 litres in August 2019 compared with the same month a year ago, according to figures released by the statistical service, the Cyprus Mail reported on September 13.

At the same time, a significant increase of 35 per cent was recorded in the period between January and August 2019, compared with the same period last year.

Total beer deliveries from factories amounted to 4,725,425 litres in August compared with 5,233,315 in August 2018, down by 9.7 per cent or 507,890 litres.

Deliveries for local consumption fell to 4,610,152 litres compared with 5,060,587 litres last year in August, down by 8.9 per cent.

On the other hand, beer exports dropped to 115,273 litres in August this year, compared with 172,728 litres in August 2018, a sharp decline of 33.2 per cent.

However, exports in the first seven months of 2019 increased significantly by 35 per cent to 1,169,859 litres, an improvement compared with the 863,697 litres exported from January to July 2018.

Brewery news South Korea & Japan: South Korea reduces Japanese beer imports in August by 97%
South Korean imports of Japanese beer fell 97 percent in August from a year earlier due to a boycott of Japanese products amid a bilateral trade spat, the Yonhap News reported on September 16.

The value of imports of Japanese beer came to US$223,000 in August, compared with $7.56 million in the same period of last year, according to the data from the Korea Customs Service (KCS).

The sharp decline came as many South Korean consumers joined a boycott of Japanese goods in anger at Tokyo's trade curbs against Seoul.

In July, Tokyo imposed tighter regulations on exports to Seoul of three materials -- resist, etching gas and fluorinated polyimide -- that are critical for the production of semiconductors and flexible displays.

Japan later removed South Korea from its "whitelist" of trusted trading partners in retaliation against last year's South Korean Supreme Court rulings ordering Japanese firms to compensate South Korean victims of forced labor during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

Japan claims that all compensation was settled when the two countries normalized their diplomatic ties in 1965.

Overall, it purchased about XAF9.5 billion of sugar and corn grits from local producers. Officially, this represents 29% of the XAF32.5 billion spent on agricultural raw materials. In 2018, the purchase of agricultural raw materials from local producers made up 44% (XAF16.5 billion) of funds used in that segment.

For locally purchased inputs, the company estimates it to be XAF11.6 billion or 30% of its overall purchase in January-August 2019.

With these purchases, SABC had a strong impact on the sales of some local companies.
