Barley news Canada: Harvest continues to face extraordinarily challenging conditions
The harvest in Western Canada continues to face extraordinarily challenging conditions as record breaking snow storms covered southern Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan earlier this week. The enormity of the storm and the accumulation of rain/snow across the prairies brought everything to a standstill, prolonging an already delayed harvest. Temperatures last week were in the single digits, well below seasonal averages, although they are forecast to return closer to seasonal levels later this week before dipping again next week, CMBTC reported on October 3. The problem now is that many fields are so wet they cannot sustain the weight of the combines. This is different from summer rains when the ground dries out after a few days. Many fields are saturated and this is resulting in further degradation of crops. What remains in the fields will mostly be of feed quality, limiting the supply of malting barley this year. The story of this year’s harvest is that while quality has been severely compromised by wide spread rains and cool temperatures across the prairies, there are pockets of good quality malting barley where farmers were able to get the crop off in good condition. Early quality indications are mixed with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Foxtown Brewing to launch on November 6
From custom dog food to custom beer, the Nieman family knows special crafting – and they are about to prove it with the new brewery, the Greater Milwaukee Today reported on October 1.

Foxtown Brewing, 6411 W. Mequon Road, Mequon, will open Nov. 6 with 12 to 14 craft beers on tap, a 7.5-barrel brewhaus and a full kitchen with food made 85 percent from scratch.

The building, constructed in 1857 and once the eminent Opitz and Zimmerman Brewery, is now in the hands of Thomas Nieman, president of Mequon-based Fromm Family Foods LLC, with General Manager Kyle Smith by his side. The new brewery will feature only Foxtown craft beers and sodas. The beer is currently being brewed in Germantown by Foxtown’s brewmaster Nate Bahr. In the second quarter of next year, the beers will be brewed on location.

There will be a large variety of IPAs and lagers, and even classic German beer styles. Nieman also wants people to have fun and see all the ways you can drink beer. Blueberry or raspberry beers, Foxtown can do that.

“You can’t put fruit in a beer,” joked Nieman. “What are you drinking that for? We want to make it so people have an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Best End Brewing Company already open in Atlanta
A new brewpub has opened its doors in Atlanta. The fresh arrival to the West End, called Best End Brewing Company, is located at 1036 White St. SW., Hoodline reported on September 30.

This recently opened establishment is still refining its menus. The early list of beer selections included Slippers (American rye pale ale), Slabtown Pils (Czech pilsner), Man of War (Vienna lager) and more. Mussels, clams and oysters were all available on this spot's sample menu.

With a four-star rating out of seven reviews on Yelp so far, the newcomer is getting solid feedback from clientele.

Wyatt M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Sept. 24, wrote, "All the beers are on point! The Anxiety Pils and Lack of Focus were my favorites. This spot also served the best chicken wings I've had in a while."

And Peter T. wrote, "This is a great space! The food was delicious. We went light and had a meat and cheese plate along with some squid and octopus."

Best End Brewing Company is now open, so head on over to check it out. It is open from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 4 p.m.-11 p.m. on Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Hook Point Brewing Co. to open Collierville’s first brewery in 2020
Hook Point Brewing Co. hopes to open Collierville’s first brewery in the spring of 2020, The Daily Memphian reported on October 1.

The business will begin brewing beer soon at its location, but it will be several months and multiple town approvals before opening.

The space is near the Town Square at 184 S. Mt. Pleasant Road.

“The building fit our brand as far as how it looks and what we want our tap room to look like,” founder Mike Sadler said of the 17,000-square-foot space operators found last fall.

“There is nothing (like a brewery) out this way,” Sadler said, noting there is only one other brewery outside Memphis proper. “We felt like this area needed it.”

He said with the growth and liveliness of the square, the town is trying to build an experience for nightlife and weekends. Hook Point could add to that atmosphere, giving suburban residents a place to go and have a glass of beer without driving Downtown or to Midtown.

Sadler is a former U.S. Navy pilot who moved from Florida to Collierville and wanted to open a brewery. He liked the name Hook Point, which is an aircraft term.

Sadler brought Jay Marchmon to Memphis after Marchmon ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Locust Cider & Brewing opens its doors in Wodinwille
A new brewpub and cidery has opened its doors in Woodinville. Called Locust Cider & Brewing, the new arrival is located at 1222 Post Alley in Central Business District, Hoodline reported on September 30.

Locust Cider & Brewing serves hard cider, craft beer and canned wine as well as cider slushies and an extended food menu, which includes Uli's Sausages in flavors like jalapeño cheddar and rosemary chicken.

The family-friendly brewery also offers a variety of retro video games and board games for young and old patrons alike.

With a 3.5-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp so far, the new addition is getting mixed reviews from clientele.

Aaron G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on September 22, wrote, "After hanging out there for an hour and a half (and drinking several awesome ciders), we decided to pay for a membership on the spot. The open, well-lit atmosphere is nice, and I love the fact that they've got a couple of video game systems set up in the corner."

And Delia S. wrote, "It has a laid back, cool ambiance and the staff are super friendly and helpful, but the ciders were beyond subpar. The dark ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Troubles End Brewing to open in Appalachian Brewing’s former location in Collegeville
A new brewery is getting ready to open in the space previously occupied by Appalachian Brewing in Collegeville, Patch.com reported on October 1.

Troubles End Brewing will open up on the second floor of the building at 50 W. Third Avenue. An opening date is slated at some point before the end of 2019.

The new brewery's product will be led by Zach Svoboda, who comes over from Ambler's award-winning Forest and Main, according to a report from Breweries in Pennsylvania.

Casey Parker, formerly of Pistola's, will helm the eatery, the report states.

The brewery will feature 25 rotating taps with room for more than 200 guests, as well as live music, an arcade, and table games.

Appalachian closed its Collegeville location for good in January; a new spot was opened in West Chester.

Brewery news USA, OR: Great Notion Brewing and Barrel House opening third location in Cedar Mill
Great Notion Brewing and Barrel House—known for beers with bold flavors that inspire devotees to wait in line every Saturday to buy special releases—just announced that it is opening a third location in Cedar Mill, the Willamette Week reported on October 1.

Founds James Dugan, Andy Miller and Paul Reiter signed a lease for a storefront in a plaza on Northwest Lost Springs Terrace, which is anchored by a Market of Choice, joining locations on Alberta and Northwest Portland.

The goal is to open in January 2020, but while the buildout is underway Great Notion plans to start operating a pop-up beer garden tent during weekends as early as November.

"So many of our customers work at Nike, Intel and Columbia, but have a hard time getting to our Alberta and Northwest locations with all the traffic these days," Reiter said in a press release. "We wanted to make it easier for people out in Beaverton and Hillsboro to be able to try some of our juicy IPAs and flavorful beers like Double Stack and Blueberry Muffin, but not give up any distribution rights or become a distributor ourselves."

Brewery news USA, MN: St. Paul brewpub Birch’s Lowertown listed for sale
St. Paul brewpub Birch’s Lowertown has been listed for sale, just over one calendar year after they opened for business in the neighborhood’s Market House Collaborative building, The Growler reported on October 1.

The Growler became aware of Birch’s Lowertown’s intention to sell their brewery via a classified ad listing on ProBrewer, an industry-insider resource. The short ad, credited by name to Birch’s Lowertown brewmaster and co-owner Brennan Greene, contains a photo of the Lowertown location’s brewing facility and the following message.

“Turn key brewery installed and ready to brew. Lightly used for 1 year, current existing brewery looking to sell. Located in downtown St Paul, Minnesota. 10bbl brewhouse, 1,500bbl capacity.”

When reached for comment, Greene clarified that while the brewery is indeed for sale, Birch’s Lowertown has no intention to close at the moment, and if he and co-owner Burt Joseph can’t find a buyer interested in purchasing the entire brewing facility and taproom, business will continue as usual for the foreseeable future.

“The bottom line is, we’re just kind of wanting to see if we had any options available to us; if anyone was interested in taking the space over as is,” Greene explained by phone.

“As of right now, it’s okay. We’re ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: AB InBev to acquire key assets from distributor Markstein Beverage Co.
California’s beer distribution system is being shaken up once again, Brewbound reported on September 30.

Anheuser-Busch InBev announced on October 27 the planned acquisition of “key assets” from Markstein Beverage Co. in San Marcos, California. The company will add those assets to its existing wholly owned distributor, Anheuser-Busch Sales of San Diego.

The move comes about 15 months after Markstein, under threat of termination, was forced to sell the distribution rights to the Constellation Brands portfolio of Mexican import brands, including Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, and Pacifico, among others, in northern San Diego County to the Reyes Beverage Group.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close upon closing requirements being met.

According to a press release, A-B and Markstein will work together in the coming weeks to “ensure a seamless transition.”

“Markstein Beverage Co. has been a long-time partner and we believe this purchase is a natural extension of our business in California,” A-B chief sales officer Brendan Whitworth said in the release. “We thank the Markstein Family for their 32 years in San Diego with Anheuser Busch, and we wish the Markstein family all the best and look forward to them continuing to play a critical role ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Forbidden Brewing Company closes its doors in Courtenay
The Forbidden Brewing Company has closed its doors in Courtenay, the Comox Valley Record reported on September 30.

The nano-brewery located at 1590 Cliffe Ave. at the Best Western Westerly Hotel officially closed its doors on September 29, confirmed owner Michael Vincent, who did not want to comment any further.

U-Haul trucks were seen outside the brewery on September 30, which opened in 2015 and has occupied the space at the Westerly hotel since July 2014.

The FBC’s lease ran until the end of September, with options for renewal until 2024.

Rick Browning, managing partner of the hotel, confirmed equipment was being moved from the space.

While he couldn’t confirm what was going to occupy the space next, he did note there is “a user in place and the paperwork has been done” but could not provide further details, as he added the next steps depend on the permitting process.

FBC and its landlord have had a rocky relationship in the past.

Disagreements between the hotel and the brewery arose in 2016 when the brewery applied to renew its lease. Hotel management cited a series of breaches of the brewery’s lease agreement.

In September 2017, the Supreme Court of B.C. ruled in favour of the FBC being allowed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Somerville Brewing files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Somerville Brewing Company has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, according to court documents. The business, which has both a brewery/taproom and brewhouse, is looking to reorganize after falling behind on rent payments for its Assembly Row location, Patch.com reported on September 30.

Somerville Brewing Company wants to keep operating both locations as it reorganizes. The company opened its brewhouse at Assembly Row in 2017 after running a seasonal beer garden at the shopping complex.

The company, which sells the Slumbrew brand, has also operated a brewery and taproom on Ward Street since 2014.

Hops news Japan: Northeastern prefecture of Iwate trying to revive local hop-growing industry
Encouraged by a recent craft beer boom, the city of Tono in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Iwate has been welcoming outsiders wanting to try new ways to revive the local hop-growing industry and transform the community into a "beer town", the Kyodo News Plus reported on October 8.

Japan imports about 95 percent of hops for domestic beer production from such countries as Germany. For the remaining 5 percent, Tono plays a key role as it accounts for about 20 percent of the country's total output.

But the hop-farming industry in the city with a population of about 27,000, which was largely unscathed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, has been hit by a decreasing number of farmers due to aging, lack of successors and an influx of cheap imports.

Its hop output has plunged about 80 percent over the past 30 years along with declines in the country's whole production.

One of those outsiders tackling the issue is Atsushi Yoshida, 46, hailing from Yokohama, who established Beer Experience Co. in February 2018.

"By putting efforts into hop production and other activities, I want to realize a situation in which everyone from all over Japan and the world will associate beer with Tono," said ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Trade ministry confirms no Sabeco shares sold to Chinese investors
Vietnam’s trade ministry, which can veto share sales by Sabeco, has confirmed that Chinese investors have not acquired shares in the nation’s largest brewery, the VnExpress International reported on October 3.

Responding to a question at a press conference on October 2, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said that rumours about Chinese investors buying shares in Sabeco after Thai owners took a controlling stake in the company in 2017 are "completely untrue."

Sabeco has two major shareholders now. Thai beverage giant ThaiBev holds a 53.59 percent stake through a local subsidiary, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) holds 36 percent, while other shareholders hold the remaining 10.41 percent, Hai said.

With its stake in Sabeco, MoIT retains a veto right on any move the brewer makes that it deems unsuitable, he added.

Hai noted that although the government welcomes and supports all foreign investors expanding their business operations in Vietnam, dissemination of false information may affect the reputation and interests of shareholders.

He added that Sabeco and other businesses should gather evidence and report to authorities, including the police, upon hearing of false rumours.

Sabeco is a public company listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE). In December ...More info on site

It has recently been awarded the ₱734-billion project to construct the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan.

Brewery news Malaysia: Beer styles selection still limited in Malaysia
As the craft beer scene blossoms in Southeast Asia, one holdfast nation continues to lag behind its neighbours, BeverageDaily.com reported on October 2.

For many beer lovers, Malaysia is almost entirely a wasteland, with the same standard taps on display at just about every bar in the country, and next to nothing that is outside the mainstream.

Only three companies have licences to brew beer in Malaysia and two of these are active: Heineken and Carlsberg. According to the Confederation of Malaysian Brewers, the two majors account for 95% of the beer and stout total volume in the market.

If you see a selection of Heineken, Tiger and Guinness, the venue you are in is aligned to Heineken Malaysia. Bars serving Carlsberg, Kronenbourg and Connors Stout are supplied by Carlsberg Malaysia. You will on occasion see other names, such as Strongbow, Kilkenny or Asahi, but these brands are all part of the big two breweries.

Being an effective duopoly, the global brand owners are extremely tight in allowing anything outside their portfolios to be promoted, especially when it is on tap. The contracts their bar customers sign are very clear about what can be done with third-party brands. As a result, Malaysia is a ...More info on site

Whisky news Japan: Asahi’s Nikka Whisky rushing to meet growing demand
For the first time in two decades, employees at Japanese distiller Nikka Whisky will be working day and night shifts to meet global demand for made-in-Japan whisky, Bloomberg reported on October 8.

Even so, the best fruits of their labor probably won’t be on the market for at least another decade, given the time it takes to age the finest vintages.

Japanese distillers have been both a beneficiary and victim of the world-wide thirst for whisky, with the market projected to grow 19% to $147.6 billion in the five years through 2023, according to Euromonitor International. The island nation has been steadily gaining a reputation for quality whiskies, but because of long aging times, the current boom has caught distillers unawares and unable to meet demand. Last year, Suntory Holdings Ltd. ran out of Hakushu 12 and Hibiki 17.

Now Nikka, owned by Japan’s largest brewer Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., is rushing to expand production. The distillery has halted sales of some of its top brands, which include Taketsuru, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Nikka is boosting output by 20%, investing 65 billion yen ($606 million) over the next two years to build new infrastructure and doubling shifts. Nikka is Japan’s second-largest ...More info on site

Whisky news World: Beam Suntory releases US-Japan whiskey Legent
Beam Suntory have released a collaborative American whiskey made by Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe and Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo called Legent, Drinks International reported on October 7.

It is distilled and aged in Kentucky by Noe, seventh generation master distiller of Jim Beam, finished in Californian red wine and sherry casks and then blended by Fukuyo.

“Generally the bourbon industry doesn’t use the blending technique which is why I proposed we introduce blending to the new product,” Fukuyo told Drinks International. “To do his we needed a different type of whiskey and so I suggested a wine and sherry cask finish.

“The red wine casks came from California but I insisted they must be French oak because during the finishing process it’s not only the wine that’s important but the wood influence too. The sherry casks have been provided by Suntory which would have been used to make Japanese whisky.”
