Canada: Trying to get malting barley quality a challenge this year
|
It’s been a challenging harvest for Canadian farmers this year with rain, snow and a good portion of the crop still out in the field in many areas, the Swift Current Online reported on October 9.
Brent Johnson farms east of Strasbourg and is Vice Chair of Sask Barley.
He says trying to get malting quality barley is a challenge this year.
“If you we’re lucky to get some off before some of the bigger rains, you probably do have some malt quality. I know that the quality specs are a little bit wider this year because there’s sort of a shortage of it. Definitely, the snow that we got early last week and just those four day rain events it's really, really hard to keep your germination through those type of things and Malt Barley is definitely suffering.”
He notes Saskatchewan farmers grow the type of barley the brewers want.

USA, OH: Dead Low Brewing dropping anchor in Cincinnati
|
A new brewing company is dropping anchor on Kellogg Avenue in Cincinnati's California neighborhood — within walking distance of Coney Island and Riverbend Music Center. Dead Low Brewing is slated to open its doors on Oct. 10 and will feature a taproom, beer garden and kitchen, the Cincinnati CityBeat reported.
Located at 5959 Kellogg Ave., Dead Low takes its name from the term for the minimum depth needed for a boat to traverse a body of water safely and because the brewery is located so close to the Ohio River.
The taproom will serve beer, cider and seltzer brewed on-site, as well as a from-scratch food menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, pizza, wings, salad and entrees like hangar steak and ribs; there's also a dedicated kids menu and several vegetarian options. Many dishes will utilize Dead Low brews, like in the beer-battered haddock sandwich or the beer cheesecake.
According to a release, the outdoor beer garden will seat over 200 and features a bar handmade by local sculptors. In addition to the sculptural work, there is also a mural in the taproom that "shares the story of Dead Low."

USA, WI: District 1 Brewing Co. aiming at November opening in Stevens Point
|
A new brewery will open this fall in Stevens Point, and it’s all about the community, the Stevens Point Journal reported on October 2.
District 1 Brewing Co. plans to open in November at 200 N. Division St., said co-owner Chris Gethers. He is one of six owners of the brewery.
When it comes to the beer, District 1 Brewing Co. will offer 24 to 30 beers, both new varieties and classics. Guests will be able to find amber, lager, porter and more, and options will change based on availability and customer feedback, Gethers said.
There’s a lot to learn about brewing beer, and they want to help educate their customers on the varieties they serve and the brewing process. Customers will be able to see the equipment and take a tour to learn more about how the beer is made.
Gethers said they plan to distribute some of their beer off site, but the main focus will be to sell their product at the brewery to enjoy in the taproom.

USA, PA: Newtown Brewing Company to open its doors to public on October 18
|
A new craft brewery under construction in Newtown has announced its official grand opening date. The Newtown Brewing Company will open its doors to the public on Friday, Oct. 18. Doors will open at 5 p.m., the business announced on October 3.
Festivities are planned throughout the weekend, including two live bands Saturday, October 19.
The Newtown Brewing Company is owned by Gregg Bonstein.
Construction on the Penns Trail property has been ongoing following the establishment's 2018 approval. The business is located at 103 Penns Trail, and shares a 10,000-square-foot building with Sir Speedy.
The brewery has about 4,600 square-feet of space, with half of it dedicated to brewing, manufacturing, and warehouse uses. The other half is a taproom open to the public, according to Bonstein.
The taproom will be open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, with the following hours: Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.;Friday 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

USA, CO: Renegade Brewing, Good River Beer and Rocky Mountain Sector merge to create Brewer’s Co-Hop
|
Three Colorado breweries — Renegade Brewing, Good River Beer and Rocky Mountain Sector — have merged to create the Brewer’s Co-Hop, a new business venture that will share a production facility and back-of-house resources in Denver, Brewbound reported on October 3.
The three breweries will share brewing and administrative space in a 15,000 sq. ft. facility in Denver’s Baker neighborhood. The facility previously served as Renegade’s production brewery, which the brewer had listed for sale for $1.2 million last year, according to Denver alt-weekly newspaper Westword. The building will also house Good River’s first taproom, which will serve beers from the other two brands on guest taps.
Good River co-founder Adam Odoski told Brewbound that the cooperative grew out of his company’s initial attempt to acquire Renegade’s facility.
“It came about because Good River Beer put in an offer to purchase Renegade’s production facility and as Renegade was transferring knowledge to Good River, everyone realized that there was a better way to do things and that everyone could accomplish more by working together,” he wrote in an email.
The new facility is capable of producing as much as 10,000 barrels of beer annually, Brewer’s Co-Hop marketing manager Sarah Nelson told Brewbound.

Japan: All four major brewers enjoy double-digit sales growth in September

All four major Japanese brewers enjoyed double-digit sales growth for beer and beer-like products in September, thanks to the ongoing Rugby World Cup in Japan, Nippon.com reported citing the companies' data on October 10.
Since the start of the sporting event, large amounts of beer have been consumed, mainly by foreign visitors, who enjoy drinking beer while watching the matches.
The increases were also supported by a last-minute surge in demand before the consumption tax rate hike from 8 pct to 10 pct on Oct. 1.
The sales increases for all four companies came for the first time in two years and four months, since May 2017.
Kirin Holdings Co. saw its sales surge 24 pct, on the back of the strong sales of "third-segment" beer-like beverage Honkirin and the domestic production of Heineken beer. Dutch brewer Heineken NV is a Worldwide Partner of the Rugby World Cup.

UK: AB InBev puts on hold UK headquarters expansion plan

Brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev SA has put on hold plans to roughly double the size of its U.K. headquarters as growing Brexit uncertainty weighs on investment decisions, Bloomberg reported on October 11.
The Belgian company, which owns beer brands including Budweiser and Corona, was in advanced talks to lease all of the additional space in London’s Bureau building, where it already occupies the top four floors, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
AB InBev was seeking additional space to facilitate U.K. expansion plans, but the talks have broken down, the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans are private. A lack of clarity over Brexit ahead of the Oct. 31 deadline was a factor in the decision to hold off on signing, they said.
“As we grow as a business, we are always looking at alternatives to optimize our footprint and are considering different options for this, including looking at additional office space,” AB InBev said in an emailed statement. “While we have not yet made a decision here, this is related to a number of factors, rather than tied to Brexit only.”

Belgium: Brewer 3 Fonteinen to invest EUR25 mln to boost production
|
Belgian brewery 3 Fonteinen, known for their gueuze and kriek beers, has announced a million-euro investment to boost local production and outfit an existing brewing site with a visitor’s park, The Brussels Times reported on October 11.
The beer maker’s site in the village of Lot, in the Flemish Brabant, will be outfitted with brewing infrastructure and diverse facilities in a major investment expected to total €25 million.
Brewing is not currently done at the Lot facilities, which are used mainly for the assembly and maturing processes of the brand’s well-known gueuzes, a type of lambic beer originally manufactured in and around Brussels.
The investment signals an intention by the company to boost production and to delve into the beer tourism sector, with the revamp set to include a park and visiting spaces.
Hundreds of Schaerbeek cherry trees, whose fruits were traditionally used to produce Belgium’s well-known kriek beers, will also be planted in the expanded Lot site, in an effort to bring back the local cherries into the brand’s kriek production.
The Belgian brewer has also set eyes on boosting cooperation with local grain producers, and in particular to reintroduce a local variety of hop, according to the Belga news agency.

Japan: Sapporo to extend best-before period for its beer

Sapporo Breweries Ltd. said on October 8 that it will extend the best-before period for its beer and quasi-beer products from the current nine months to 12 months, The Japan News reported.
The new best-before period, intended to help reduce food waste, will be applied in stages to products to be made in and after March 2020.
Sapporo Breweries will also change ways to display when products were made. While the year and month, as well as whether they were made in the early, middle or later part of the month, are shown at present, only the year and month will be displayed under the new format.
The changes will cover 21 brands of beer, happoshu low-malt quasi-beer and so-called third-segment beer-like beverages, including the Black Label draft beer, a mainstay product for the firm.
The best-before period for the company’s nonalcoholic beer products has already been set at 12 months.
The longer best-before period has been made possible partly on the back of improvements in ingredients and production methods, according to Sapporo Breweries.
Asahi Breweries Ltd., Kirin Brewery Co. and Suntory Beer Ltd. are considering similar changes.

Mexico: Armed men attempt to storm Heineken brewery in Cancun
|
Employees of the Heineken brewery in Cancun were quick to sound the alarm after a group of armed men attempted to storm the building, the Riviera Maya News reported on October 11.
The incident happened in Region 97 in the industrial zone of Cancun in the morning of October 10 when, according to preliminary reports, a group of armed people outfitted with orange work vests entered the premises.
Authorities say employees managed to activate the emergency alarm, requesting support for an attempted robbery.
Employees said that the men entered the building, tied them and robbed them of their wallets and phones while threatening them with guns, however, employees tripped the alarm which caused the group to flee.
Municipal police, ministerial agents and paramedics arrived at the brewery. Aside from rattled nerves, there were no reported injuries.
Since the incident, police say they have located a vehicle believed used in the attempted heist. The vehicle was found in Region 100 of Cancun with the engine still hot, matching the vehicle seen on brewery surveillance cameras.
Police say it was the likely get-away vehicle. They also clarified that the thieves were a group of eight, not 20 people, as has been reported in other media.
