Malaysia: Shares in Heineken Malaysia, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia rise on unchanged excise duties in new budget
|
Shares in Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd rose at the midday break on October 14 after Malaysian brewers were spared excise duties on beer, The Edge Markets MY reported.
At 12.30pm, Heineken Malaysia gained 1.24% or 30 sen to RM24.54 while Carlsberg added 0.8% or 22 sen to RM27.60.
Last Friday (Oct 11), Heineken Malaysia commended the government for maintaining the excise duties on beer as well as the sales and services tax.
"We commend the government for this measured approach and not increasing the excise duties further but continue to demonstrate its commitment towards creating a progressive and more prosperous Malaysia for all," Heineken Malaysia managing director Roland Bala said in a statement following the Budget 2020 announcement.
Bala pointed out that the excise on beer in Malaysia is already among the highest in the world, resulting in a big gap between duty paid and duty not paid beers and stouts.

Australia: Carlton & United Breweries to establish boutique brewery in Victoria's Yarra Valley
|
Beer giant Carlton & United Breweries is tapping into drinkers' growing taste for craft beer, striking a deal with one of the founding fathers of Australia's craft brewing industry, Phil Sexton, to establish a boutique brewery in Victoria's Yarra Valley, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on October 14.
The move is the latest acknowledgement from major breweries that consumers are increasingly turning to craft beers, a segment that has grown strongly at the expense of mainstream beers.
Mr Sexton, who will convert his Giant Steps winery in Healesville into a brewery, told The Age the new outfit was expected to make its first beer in November and pull its first beers to customers in a pub attached to the brewery in December.
The new brewery will make beers under the Matilda Bay label, including well-known names like Redback and Dogbolter. It will also develop a new range of Matilda Bay beers.
Mr Sexton was a joint founder of the Matilda Bay brewery in the early 1980s and a joint founder of Little Creatures brewery, both of which were established in Fremantle in Western Australia. CUB fully acquired Matilda Bay in 1990.
Giant Steps opened its doors to customers in Healesville about 15 years ago and

Croatia: Craft beer on the rise in Croatia
|
The rise of craft beer in Croatia is a revolution and breweries such as Bura Brew, The Garden Brewery and Pivovara Medvedgrad are thriving as they lift the nation’s beer standard to world-class, The CEO Magazine reported on October 13.
Over the past five years, Croatia’s craft beer sector has boomed. The market has gone from a handful of names to more than 60 craft breweries across the country – all aiming to raise the image and value of the beer sector. “It’s a revolution,” says Alessandro Zecchinati, co-owner of Bura Brew, named after the famous strong wind that sweeps the Adriatic Sea. “People are fed up with flat-tasting beer and bad quality food.”
Croatia’s beer sector, although more than 90% of all beer sold in Croatia is produced domestically, is dominated by the big six, which includes Ožujsko and Karlovačko. More than 90% of revenue is shared among the leading players. However, change is in motion.
Pioneering microbrewers – wanting to add a twist to the national beer culture they love – are gaining momentum and popularity. The craft beer movement started between 2013 and 2014 in Croatia.
Considering how young it is, it has a good slice of the market. “However, this

India: Craft beer sector starts brewing on larger scale thanks to rising demand
|
The growing popularity of craft beer in India is encouraging some craft brewers to brew on a larger scale to reach out to a wider public. Many till now tended to restrict themselves to on-premise manufacturing, the Times of India reported on October 12.
Brewers such as Arbor Brewing in Bengaluru, Goa Brewing in the namesake state, and White Rhino in Delhi NCR have started beefing up their presence with retailers. Some microbreweries, including Toit and Windmills, are in the process of setting up their own manufacturing facilities.
A craft brewery or a microbrewery is one that produces much smaller amounts than large-scale corporate breweries. They are independently owned, and they tend to emphasise quality, flavour and brewing technique. "Craft beer can be bottled or canned, as in Europe and the US. Packaging gives us the opportunity to provide within a state, as also other states," Asthavinayak Paradh, co-founder of Goa Brewing, says.
Goa Brewing has a facility where it has a brew-house of 3,000 hectolitres (3 lakh litres) and a fermentation tank of 6,000 hectolitres through which it caters to Goa. It plans to make its products available in Karnataka and Mumbai in the next few months.

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia commends Government for maintaining beer excise duties unchanged
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd has commended the Government for maintaining the excise duties on beer as well as the Sales and Services Tax (SST), The Edge Markets MY reported on October 11.
"We commend the Government for this measured approach and not increasing the excise duties further but continue to demonstrate its commitment towards creating a progressive and more prosperous Malaysia for all," Heineken Malaysia managing director Roland Bala said in a statement following the Budget 2020 announcement on October 11.
Bala pointed out that the excise on beer in Malaysia is already among the highest in the world, resulting in a big gap between duty paid and duty not paid beers and stouts.
"This wide gap has led the influx of illicit trade to thrive over the years," he said.
"We thank the Government and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for their on-going efforts in addressing the illicit alcohol issue as this represents revenue leakages to both Government and industry," Bala added.
Shares of Heineken Malaysia closed up 18 sen or 0.75% at RM24.24 on October 11, for a market capitalisation of RM7.323 billion.

Ireland & UK: Guinness loses some market share in home market, enjoys higher demand in the UK
|
Guinness parent Diageo is concerned at falling sales of the iconic stout in its home market, The Times reported on October 13.
John Kennedy, Diageo president for Europe, Turkey and India, recently told analysts that Guinness had lost some share in Irish pub sales. “So we’re doing a lot of work about how to turn that around,” he said.
The performance in Ireland contrasts with sales in Britain, whose more high-profile drinkers include the Duchess of Cambridge. Draft Guinness grew 5% in Britain last year, which was described as “a super performance in a market that’s flat to declining in the on-trade [pub trade]”.
Kennedy cited the sponsorship of the Six Nations rugby as a factor in growing UK stout sales.

UK: AB InBev launches Corona in draught format across UK pubs and bars
|
AB InBev’s Budweiser Brewing Group UK & Ireland subsidiary has announced that its Mexican beer brand Corona will be available in draught format across pubs and bars in the UK, from October 2019, FoodBev.com reported.
The launch of the ‘new, desirable’ draught format follows the success of its 25-venue trial and Budweiser Brewing Group believes it will help increase both volume and value sales for customers.
In attempt to differentiate itself from competitors, the beer tower features a metal and wood construct with a glass viewing pane that shows a lightly effervescing liquid to highlight Corona’s apparent refreshing nature.
Aligned to the brand’s efforts to address marine plastic pollution, the new font tower is plastic-free. This follows Corona’s move to plastic-free six-pack rings last November.
Attached to the side of the tower is a lime holder, to continue the lime ritual which is integral to the Corona serve. The beer will be available as a pint or half-pint, served with a lime segment on the edge of the newly designed glass that is modelled on the bottle.
Rory McLellan, trade sales director at Budweiser Brewing Group, said: “Corona draught is the perfect addition to a venue’s offering – it meets consumer demand for premium experiences,

World: Heineken Global Duty Free achieves double-digit sales volume increase this year
|
Heineken Global Duty Free has reported a double-digit year-on-year sales volume increase in its overall duty free business for 2019, The Moodie Davitt Report said on October 11.
Growth was driven by increased distribution for the company’s portfolio of more than 250 brands in cruise, ferries and inflight.
“The growing consumer trend to drink better continues to open up increased revenue opportunities driven by the demand for premium brands such as those in the Heineken portfolio,” said Global Duty Free Trade & Category Manager Kateryna Vasylchenko.
“There is also notable growth in the demand for low/no alcohol options and this has delivered +73% sales volume growth for Heineken 0.0 [2019 compared to 2018]. Beer and cider consumers are strongly loyal to their favourite brand, however on vacation they are open to trying out new variants. Heineken Global Duty Free offers solutions for this discovery mindset with the rich diversity of its portfolio in beer and cider beverages, with many strong, regionally relevant brands.”
In the inflight channel, Heineken said it now had 38% market share across its portfolio. Double-digit growth was driven in part by listing wins in all regions, including easyJet (in co-operation with Gate Retail), Emirates, Xiamen Airlines, China Southern and Hainan

|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd has appointed Stefano Clini as its new managing director effective October 26, 2019, The Sun Daily reported on October 14.

Australia: Grain prices continue to chop around amid declining prospects for winter crop
|
Northern Australia’s grain markets continue to chop around in a tussle of tight nearby supplies and hopes for an easing in prices once harvest activity picks up in south eastern Australia and Western Australia, the Queensland Country Life reported on October 14.
Darling Downs prices have been holding in a A$420 to A$440 range for stockfeed wheat for the past three weeks. Buyers have been lifting bids to the higher end of the range when they need to secure some coverage and then edging lower afterwards. Barley prices fell A$15 to A$20 late last week to A$405 to A$410 on trader selling ahead of the Western Australia’s harvest.
Prospects for Australia's 2019 winter crop harvest continue to decline. Some private estimates have the national wheat crop slipping below 16 million tonnes and the barley harvest falling below 8 mln tonnes. Last week the USDA lowered its forecast for Australia's wheat crop by a further 1 mln tonnes to 18 mln tonnes while leaving barley unchanged at 8.6 mln tonnes.
If the lowball forecasts are realised, it would be Australia's smallest winter crop since the 2007 drought when the national wheat crop was just 13.6 mln tonnes.
However, Australia's shrinking crop size may not mean
