Brewery news USA, CO: Legacy Breweries announces acquisition on Aspen Brewing Co.
An upstart company with an eye on craft breweries announced on October 10 its acquisition of Aspen Brewing Co., which was founded in 2008, the Aspen Times reported.

Legacy Breweries, whose CEO and founder Don Bryant lives in Evergreen, has bought all of Aspen Brewing Co.’s assets and its name, as well as its downtown tavern and its production facility at the Aspen Business Center.

“A really big part of our goal is we want to maintain all of our breweries with local support,” Bryant said. “We’re not a macro-brewer, we’re not a publicly traded company. Our goal is to find local folks and support everything they do.”

Legacy also has expansion plans in the works for Aspen Brewing, including ramping up its beer production levels and opening other tap rooms in the area.

Aspen Brewing Co. founder Duncan Clauss will continue to run the local operations under Legacy Breweries, Clauss and Bryant said. During an interview at Aspen Tap, the Aspen Brewing Co.’s pub at the corner of Galena Street and Hopkins Avenue, the two declined to reveal the financial details of the transaction.

Legacy’s purchase of Aspen Brewing will give it a presence in Colorado and follows its acquisition last year of a ...More info on site

Whisky news EU & USA: US tariff on imports of Scotch and Irish whisky go into effect
Hopes in the Scotch whisky industry for a last-minute reprieve from the Trump Administration’s new 25% tariff on imports of single malt whiskies from Scotland and Northern Ireland have been dashed. The tariff went into effect at midnight on October 18 on all imports of those single malts and a wide range of other European goods, with no grace period to allow for shipments already in transit, WhiskyCast reported.

The whisky tariff is part of a $7.5 billion package of countermeasures that received final approval on Monday, October 14 from the World Trade Organization to compensate for European Union subsidies to aircraft giant Airbus in a 15-year-long dispute. A WTO dispute resolution panel ruled in favor of the U.S., which argued that low-interest loans to Airbus from the governments of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Spain violated WTO rules on government subsidies. The dispute was prompted originally by Boeing, which claimed that the low-interest loans gave Airbus an unfair advantage in developing new aircraft models to compete with Boeing. A similar complaint filed by the European Union accusing the U.S. of providing similar illegal subsidies to Boeing is in the final stages of the WTO’s dispute resolution process, with a ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley acres bouncing back in Alberta
Although it grabs lots of Alberta acres because of malting and feedlot demand, the barley sector is perceived to be slow to develop new varieties and tethered to inflexible malting specs.

But that’s changing, the Alberta Express reported on October 17.

After bottoming out in 2017 at 5.8 million acres seeded across Canada, barley has been bouncing back. This is no surprise to leading barley breeder Aaron Beattie.

While barley still has its challenges — notably a reliance on older varieties favoured by maltsters and beer makers — the University of Saskatchewan scientist said times are changing and the industry is moving with them.

“Over the last five or six years we have had some tremendous new varieties available to producers and the malt plants are observing good results when using some of these varieties,” said Beattie.

“That’s better for growers because these new varieties are definitely higher yielding, they’re better agronomically and they meet the specs that the malt companies want.”

A major driver has been the craft beer industry, which is not only more willing to buy malt made from newer varieties but also uses more of it, avoiding adjuncts like corn or rice. The big brewers have followed their lead by developing craft-style ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Elsewhere Brewing Co. aiming at next year opening in Atlanta
Husband-and-wife team Samuel and Sara Kazmer next year will open Elsewhere Brewing Co. in Grant Park, Atlanta, What Now Atlanta reported on October 8.

The craft brewpub will take residence in space formerly planned for Ateliea House of Rum in The Beacon Atlanta.

Ronford Howell, owner of the would-be rum distillery, in March told What Now Atlanta (WNA) in confidence that he would not move the project forward because of “capital restraints.”

Howell’s news is now public knowledge by way of a statement on the Ateliea website.

Elsewhere Brewing Co. will focus on “lower-gravity, sessionable classics inspired by the beers of Continental Europe,” Samuel Kazmer told WNA in an email.

Brews could include a Bohemian Pilsner, Dark Czech Lager, Belgian Saison, Bavarian Hefeweizen, German Alt, Gose, and more, he said.

Elsewhere Brewing Co. will also open with an IPA and Pale Ale option but “these styles will be our platform for experimentation with new hops/hop combinations, varying filtration, playing with fermentation temperature and yeast to produce interesting flavor profiles, etc.”

The company will also release bottle conditioned beers seasonally, inspired bu the couple’s favorite lambics from Brussels, barley wines from England, Biere de Gardes from Northern France, Brett Ales from Wallonia, and Trappist beers from throughout Belgium.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Invertase Brewing Co. officially open in Phillipsburg
Ed Ponce looked at the gleaming fermenters as he set his half-finished beer on a divider. Then he gestured around the rest of the bustling brewery.

“You can tell they’re chemists and stuff because everything’s so clean, everything’s so precise,” he said. The scientists-turned-brewers, meanwhile, were busy around the corner with the rest of their family serving up pints and flights, pausing only to cut the ribbon on their new business.

Invertase Brewing Co. in Phillipsburg officially opened on October 10, lehighvalleylive.com reported.

The first customers of the brewery at 51 N. Broad St. for months had followed along on social media as the building transformed from a former day care into a literal beer laboratory.

Owners Stephen and Karen Zolnay, of the Hunterdon County borough of Stockton, are scientists as well as homebrewers – he worked as a biochemist for 25 years, she as a diagnostic virologist at a children's hospital in Boston. Karen Zolnay is the brewery's yeast expert and has a lab to experiment with the ingredient inside the brewery.

The brewery itself is named the enzyme invertase, which starts the fermentation process. The logo is a stylized version of invertase’s molecular structure.

They say the science will also be reflected in their ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Gilla Brewing Company set to open its doors on October 26
Gilla Brewing Company is set to open Oct. 26 in Gonzales, staking its claim as the first Ascension Parish-based brewery, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report said.

Derek Stewart, who’s opening the microbrewery with Bradley Andersen and Alex Shillings, says they’re planning to have a dozen of their beers on tap for opening day, although there is concern some of the beers may not have completed the brewing process before the end of the month. Should that happen, Stewart says their licensing as a microbrewery allows them to stock other breweries’ products and wines.

Two out of the three brewery partners grew up in Ascension, which is what Stewart says inspired the trio to open their business there. They named the brewery after Shilling’s father, Kevin Shillings, a community staple nicknamed Gilla.

Stewart is optimistic they’ll be able to capitalize on their proximity between Baton Rouge and New Orleans to attract traveling beer enthusiasts.

“The more breweries that open in the Capital Region, the more people will come from out of town,” he says.

Customers should expect a frequently rotating batch of brew options. As a microbrewery, the brewers specialize in small batches. Stewart aims to keep being innovative with new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: One Family Brewing coming to Lovettsville by 2021
The Town of Lovettsville has restaurants, bars and dozens of well-attended town events, but it’s missing the one thing it needs to pair perfectly with its annual Oktoberfest—a brewery. By 2021, that should change, the Loudoun Now reported on October 11.

In February, entrepreneur David Keuhner purchased a 27-acre property along Berlin Turnpike immediately southeast of the town limits to build an 8,000-10,000-square-foot brewery called One Family Brewing—named for the togetherness residents experience when sitting around the table talking, laughing and crying with each other. Once completed within the next two years, Keuhner plans to brew stouts, lagers and all sorts of ales made from crops grown onsite. He also wants to brew a Lovettsville Oktoberfest beer for the annual celebration, open a farm-to-table restaurant and install Northern Virginia’s first Gold Star Memorial to honor the families of fallen soldiers.

While Keuhner’s idea to open a brewery in Loudoun began last year, his experience in the food and beverage industry began years ago, having run multiple Ruth’s Chris Steak Houses in the 1990s and generally been involved in the beer and wine industry for a while.

Keuhner, a 17-year county resident, said he worked for three or four months with the county’s Economic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev suing MillerCoors over alleged stealing of confidential beer recipes
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV is suing MillerCoors over its confidential recipes for Bud Light and Michelob Ultra, MarketWatch reported on October 17.

In a heavily redacted court filing on October 17, Anheuser-Busch claims MillerCoors illegally obtained the recipes through one of its employees, who used to work for Anheuser-Busch.

Anheuser-Busch says MillerCoors wanted the recipes because it was planning to retaliate for Anheuser-Bush’s Super Bowl ads, which chided MillerCoors for brewing beer using corn syrup.

Anheuser-Busch seeks damages from MillerCoors, a unit of Molson Coors Brewing Co.

The filing was the latest in a legal fight that began in March. MillerCoors sued Anheuser-Busch over the corn syrup ad campaign, which it says is false and misleading.

Last month, a federal judge in Milwaukee ruled in MillerCoors’ favor and ordered Anheuser-Busch to stop using packaging that implies rival contain corn syrup. Anheuser-Busch is appealing that ruling.

“Anheuser Busch has lost three major federal rulings in this case and now they are simply trying to distract from the basic fact that they intentionally misled American consumers,” MillerCoors spokesman Adam Collins said of Anheuser-Busch’s claims.

Brewery news USA, IL: More Brewing Co. gets license to operate production brewery in Huntley Village
A new restaurant and brewery being built in a former auto dealership should have a clear path to open later this year now that Huntley Village Board members have approved a new liquor license, the Northwest Herald reported on October 12.

Village trustees on October 10 approved the creation of a new type of liquor license for More Brewing Co. Inc. to operate a production brewery, restaurant and taproom at the former Chevrolet dealership at 13980 Automall Drive.

In January, the board approved a special use permit to allow More, a Villa Park-based craft brewery, to open a second facility at the dealership. However, because of the unique aspects of the proposal, the creation and adoption of a new liquor license class was expected.

More Brewing is converting about 14,000 square feet of the 25,302-square-foot dealership into a brewpub restaurant, which would have a full kitchen and would be open for lunch and dinner six to seven days a week.

The other 11,000 square feet of the building would be used for production, including a brewhouse, fermentation and conditioning vessels, a packaging line and a barrel room, where beer will be aged in whiskey barrels. Plans also call for outdoor patios and a special ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company to open new facility on Lake Eola
The Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company has just announced that they will open a brewery and taproom on Lake Eola in the recently-purchased Eo Inn, Bungalower reported on October 11.

The new taproom will open in the 4,800 SF space left vacant by Panera Bread in December 2016. The space also includes a 1,100 SF patio overlooking Lake Eola Park.

Persimmon Hollow told Bungalower that they plan a full renovation of the space which will feature a seven-barrel brewing system, a kitchen featuring a local food vendor, games, and even more indoor and outdoor seating.

The menu will feature a rotation of beers that are brewed and only available in the Eola location, alongside their regular brews from the original DeLand location.

An opening timeline has not been released but Persimmon Hollow staff will be interacting with passerby over Pride Weekend at the Eo Inn site.

Brewery news USA, FL: Lemonstreet Brewing Company up and running in Jacksonville
Looking for a new brewery to check out in Jacksonville? Look no further than this new arrival. Called Lemonstreet Brewing Company, the fresh arrival is located at 2100 Dennis St. in Mixon Town, Hoodline reported on October 9.

At this family-friendly brewery, you can expect about seven beers on tap, ranging from a Pilsner called Kellerbier to a smoky brown ale dubbed Budrow to a dry hopped IPA Mo' is Better. Enjoy your brew with some pretzels, tacos from The Mitt Tex-Mex Cafe stand or eats from local food trucks. In between sips, play a game of darts or a round of bocce ball.

The new brewery has gotten an enthusiastic response thus far, with a five-star rating out of four reviews on Yelp.

Sheryl P., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Oct. 3, wrote, "It's so large that there's a room to include dart boards, corn hole and an indoor bocci ball court. It's ideal for big events and families looking for a place to let the little ones run around while mom and dad grab a great craft beer."

Brewery news USA, RI: Ravenous Brewing Company moving to larger location in Cumberland
After several months of speculation and some recent hints on social media, it’s official: Woonsocket’s Ravenous Brewing Company is moving to Cumberland, with a new, larger location set to open later this month, the Valley Breeze reported on October 9.

The new building, located at 10 Industrial Road near the new roundabouts, will add approximately 35 seats to the brewery’s current 10- to 15-seat setup and offer separate tasting and brewing areas. In its current location on Cumberland Hill Road, said owner Dorian Rave, the tasting room shuts down when it’s time to brew because everything happens in one space.

“The brew room will be separate, which is great because it’ll allow us to be open and expand our hours,” he said.

Rave also plans to expand the brewing capacity with three new fermenters and a new brewhouse in the new location. The additional capacity, he said, will allow the brewery to can more of its beer to begin distributing in local liquor stores in addition to restaurant and brewery sales.

Ravenous Brewing, one of two breweries currently based in Woonsocket, opened in 2013 amid a growing craft beer scene in northern Rhode Island. The brewery shares its turf with several others around the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Boulder Beer Co. downsizing, discontinuing wider distribution due to increased competition
Faced with increased competition, Boulder Beer Co. announced on October 10 it is downsizing and it plans to discontinue widespread distribution, the Colorado Daily reported.

The company, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and was Colorado’s first craft brewery, will continue to operate as a brewpub at 2880 Wilderness Place. The pub soon will be the only place Boulder Beer will be available, as distribution across 27 states will wind down by the end of the year, officials said.

“The company did not make this decision lightly, and is excited for the opportunity to continue the Boulder Beer brand onsite with more room for rotating experimental and specialty brews,” a news release stated.

The downsizing means the loss of 21 jobs from about 50 over the next two months, particularly in the brewing and packaging department, Marketing Director Tess McFadden said.

“It’s just a perfect storm, not one specific thing went wrong,” she said. “Dialing it back to the brewpub model just makes more financial sense for us right now. “

The company plans to sell its canning and bottling equipment, and bring in a smaller brew system for the pub, she said.

The brewery will continue to offer handcrafted small batch beer to the community, ...More info on site

Ukraine has increased its grain exports by around 39pc to 15.44 million tonnes so far in the 2019/20 July-June season thanks to higher wheat shipments, Ukraine's agriculture ministry said on October 16.

The volume included 9.9 million tonnes of wheat compared to 6.7 million in the same period a season earlier, the ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine also exported 3.0 million tonnes of barley and 2.45 million tonnes of corn.

Brewery news Bulgaria: Carlsberg Bulgaria to distribute all or part of undistributed profit in 2018 as dividend
Carlsberg Bulgaria, a unit of Danish brewer Carlsberg, said on October 17 that it is planning to distribute all or part of its undistributed profit in 2018 as dividend, SeeNews reproted.

Carlsberg Bulgaria shareholders will vote on the proposal at a general meeting scheduled for November 29, the company said in an invitation for the meeting.

Carlsberg Bulgaria ended 2018 with a net profit of just over 23 million levs ($13.1 million/11.8 million euro), or 0.616 levs per share.

Barley news India: United Breweries signs contract to import 50 thousand tonnes of barley from Argentina in December
Bengaluru-based United Breweries Ltd has signed a contract to import around 50,000 tonnes of barley from Argentina at $200-$201 per tonne, cost and freight, a company source told Cogencis.

The imports are scheduled to reach the Adani Port in Gujarat in the first week of December, the official said.

Malt makers in the country had imported around 55,000-60,000 tonnes of barley in September, according to industry estimates.

With the supply crunch in the domestic market, and arrivals of the new crop scheduled to commence only in March, malt companies turned to importing the coarse grain to meet their requirements, said the owner of a Jaipur-based malt company.

Also, barley imports turned out cheaper than buying the coarse grain from the domestic market and the quality was better as well, traders said.

On October 17, prices of barley in Jaipur, the benchmark market, rose by 20 rupees to 1,870 rupees per 100 kg, as the domestic market is facing a supply crunch because stocks with farmers have almost dried up, said Munna Samodiya, owner of the Jaipur-based Bansal Trading.

According to the agriculture ministry's fourth advance estimate, India's barley output in 2018-19 is seen at 1.75 mln tonnes, compared with the final estimate of ...More info on site
