Brewery news USA, TX: Buckstin Brewing Co. to open in Nederland next month
Justin Buchanan-Lopez has been brewing craft beer in his home for more than a decade. Within the next month, he will open Buckstin Brewing Co. as he sees a long-time dream finally come to fruition, The Port Arthur News reported on November 2.

Lopez found his love for brewing early in life, starting his adventure in the depths of his mom’s kitchen before age 21. After taking a short break in college, Lopez and his wife Gabrielle Blanco finally decided it was time to get serious about opening their own local brewery.

“It got really serious about two years ago,” he said. “Gabbie went back to school to be a hairdresser and opened her own salon right across the street, and then she said it was my turn to go after my dream and open this place.”

Blanco, 27, co-owns Blanc Boutique and Salon on North 12th Street in Nederland, which she opened in June 2018.

“We were both in jobs we weren’t happy with,” she said. “I was a teacher and he worked in the oilfield. It was just not our passions.

“We took a step back and thought about what would really make us happy. I wanted to go back and do hair ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Bright Eye Brewing now open in Kamloops
A new brewery and taproom promising to offer a “fresh, ever-changing variety of innovative beers served right from the tanks they were made in” is now open in Kamloops, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 4.

Bright Eye Brewing has been founded by brewers Bryan Craig and Tyler Windsor with partners Mitch Forgie and Richard Marken, and quietly opened its doors late last week. According to a report on iNFOnews.ca, the spacious two-storey taproom features unique decor including “a refurbished Mini Cooper, a mural by local artist Kelly Wright and live tree in the centre of the dining area.”

Beers on tap at the bar include Dexter Milk Stout (5% abv), Five Alarm Funk Kveik Farmhouse Ale (4.7% abv), Juice Springsteen Hazy NEIPA (6.6% abv), Strawberry Julius Milkshake IPA (6% abv), Vinous Pinot Gris Farmhouse Ale (4.7% abv), and Jammin’ Raspberry Milk Stout (5% abv). The food menu developed by head chef Sterling Lamarsh features snacks, sandwiches, pizzas, and shaping plates drawing from a variety of culinary styles including Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Cajun.

Bright Eye Brewing is located at 292 Tranquille Road in Kamloops, and is open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily.

Brewery news USA, CO: Ska Brewing Co. and Peach Street Distillers to launch “brewstillery” in Boulder
When spring returns in 2020, it will bring a new hybrid “brewstillery” featuring Ska Brewing Co. beers and Peach Street Distillers spirits to Boulder. In the meantime, preparations to open the facility will bring changes to the companies’ operations in Durango and Palisade, The Durango Herald reported on November 7.

Peach Street and Ska, are both owned partially by Dave Thibodeau and Bill Graham. Since 2005, when Peach Street formed, the two companies have collaborated on a number of projects, such as the distillery’s Modus Hoperandi Bier Schnapps, a spirit made with Ska Brewing’s flagship IPA, Thibodeau said. They have also shared resources, such as their sales team.

Throughout that time, Thibodeau and Graham were also interested in bringing the brewery and the distillery together in a pub. They saw the perfect opportunity for it when Boulder’s Fate Brewing Co. closed earlier this year. They now hope to open the hybrid brewstillery Ska Street in March of 2020, Thibodeau said.

Ska signed the lease on the property in September and acquired much of the brewery’s existing equipment in bulk in a state auction, he said.

Thibodeau said opening the new facility in Boulder will help Ska engage with its customers on the Front Range.

Brewery news USA, AL: Oak Mountain Brewing Company coming soon to Pelham
A new brewery featuring more than 7,000-square-feet of space will be opening in the coming months near the intersection of Alabama 119 and U.S. 31 in Pelham, the Shelby County Reporter said on November 1.

Peter Genereux and Clay Baldwin have teamed up to open Oak Mountain Brewing Company, LLC. at 110 Cahaba Valley Road where they feel like the brewery will serve a crucial customer base in Shelby County.

“I felt like the Birmingham market was kind of saturated with breweries down there and it seemed like this side was underserved,” Genereux said. “Some of the investors were saying ‘hey, let’s find a place instead of building a new one’ so we looked for smaller spots around here and we found this place. We liked it for the big open space and there wasn’t a ton of renovations that needed to be done. It’s got high ceilings which is nice with the tanks we’re going to put in, so we started moving forward with the space.”

Genereux has worked for the statewide beer and wine distributor Alabama Crown, while Baldwin was the former head brewer at Ghost Train Brewing.

“I had a business plan and Clay has kind of come in here and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Elicit Brewing Co. sets opening date on November 18
Hamden's Eli's Restaurant Group has announced the opening of Elicit Brewing Co. in Manchester. With an opening date of November 18, the new brewery will be the New Haven county group's first endeavor into the Hartford county foodie scene, according to the Hartford Business Journal.

The former site of the Adams Mill Restaurant will boast 16,889-square-feet of space for patrons to enjoy the over 40 different types of beer of tap as well as a variety of gastronomic selections including pizza, sandwiches, and wings.

Aside food items, Elicit Brewing Co. is set to also include outdoor games, a fire pit, and a large patio area.

Elicit Brewing is the fourth brewery in the Manchester area. The brewery also joins Eli’s Restaurant Group's five other restaurants, which includes Eli's on Whitney in Hamden and Eli's Tavern in Milford.

Brewery news USA: Brewers continuing to lobby for government’s greater role in aluminum pricing
Brewers and producers of soda and other canned drinks are continuing to lobby this fall for the U.S. government to take a greater role in aluminum pricing, as a key benchmark for that metal hasn’t dropped much from last year’s tariffs-induced high, MarketWatch reported on November 7.

The Beer Institute, a trade association for American brewers, last week cheered a House panel’s call for a Government Accountability Office study of aluminum markets, adding that Congress should also pass a bill known as the Aluminum Pricing Examination Act.

The APEX Act, re-introduced in the House and Senate earlier this year, aims to give “exclusive jurisdiction over the setting of reference prices for aluminum premiums” to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Beverage companies are especially bent out of shape over S&P Global’s Midwest Premium, a key benchmark for aluminum prices that determines the cost of cans.

The heads of the Beer Institute and American Beverage Association blasted the Midwest Premium in a Washington Examiner op-ed last month, saying it’s a “complicated, obscure pricing system.” Suppliers “charge the Midwest Premium, a price which reflects the full tariffed price of aluminum, even on aluminum not subject to the tariff,” they wrote.

Following the Midwest Premium’s climb in March ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NB: White Elm Brewing Company’s new location in Lincoln now officially open for business
White Elm Brewing Company has been brewing up a new location and it’s officially open for business, 1011now reported on November 1.

The new location is nearly double in size from the original.

“This became available sort of late spring and we were working on it since the end of March beginning of April,” said Kolby Wood a co-owner of the brewery. “Actually got in end of August and started working and it was a pretty quick turn around.”

It’s located on 8th and R Street, right down the street from Pinnacle Bank Arena and in a popular football game day area, something Wood says they’re hoping to expand upon.

“Our taproom at 7th and Van Dorn has become sort of a neighborhood hub and we’d love for the same thing to happen here,” said Wood.

The space has had a few tenants over the years from Flatwater Bistro to Legends. White Elm is only using part of the building not the kitchen but that doesn’t mean there won’t be food sometimes.

“For game days down here we have The Bistro which is a local catering and food service company that comes down,” said Wood. “They make some really, really incredible food they’ll be serving food ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Coalition Brewing calling it quits, Gorges Beer Company into the space
It's been a rough couple of weeks for Oregon craft beer lovers, and it seems the blows just keep coming, as Coalition Brewing announced that it's calling it quits, the Willamette Week reported on November 1.

But this closing is cushioned by the fact that another business has purchased the turnkey operation.

The New School beer website was first to report that Gorges Beer Company will be moving into the space on Southeast Ankeny Street. The man running the brewhouse should be a familiar name to the local beer scene: Bryan Keilty was the longtime, award-winning head brewer at recently-shuttered Lompoc.

When word that the 25-year-old beer producer would serve its last rounds at the end of October, the business shared he would be moving to a new brewery, but couldn't release further details until the agreement was signed.

The new brewery's name is an indication of where it eventually wants to relocate. The plan is to break ground in Cascade Locks, bringing the brewery and cidery count in that city to three, following Thunder Island and Son of Man, which makes Basque-style hard-pressed beverages.

Meanwhile, Coalition, which had been open for nearly 10 years, announced the sale of its assets on their Facebook page:

Barley news EU: Heavy rains delay grain sowings in parts of EU
Heavy rains have delayed grain sowings in parts of the European Union with the situation particularly severe in Britain where they could trigger a significant shift to spring planted crops, Reuters reported on November 8.

The rains have also disrupted the harvesting of maize and sugar beet, adding to the challenge faced by farmers who are trying to get winter crops planted.

"Overall it is estimated that wheat plantings are just about 40-50% complete in the UK. We still have a bit of time but the weather forecast is far from ideal," said Ben Bodart, Director at CRM AgriCommodities.

Bodart noted the last time that Britain had significant planting issues was for the 2013/14 campaign when the final wheat area fell by nearly 19%.

UK wheat futures on ICE have been rising sharply for 2020/21 crop positions with the Nov. 2020 contract climbing to a peak of 160.00 pounds a tonne on November 7, up 10% from a month earlier.

"Some farmers are already considering rolling their 2019 harvest over to sell it next season," Bodart said.

In France, winter barley is most at risk of losing area because of its earlier planting period compared with wheat. However, the main threat from rain was to the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery sees profit decline on intensifying competition, higher barley and energy costs
Intensifying competition in a crowded beer market, combined with higher barley and energy costs have sliced into the profit of Australia's biggest independent beermaker, Coopers Brewery, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on November 8.

A 2 per cent increase in beer sales was not enough to compensate for the challenges, with the brewer recording a 31.4 per cent fall in its 2018-19 net profit to A$16.4 million. Coopers' pre-tax profit fell 32.7 per cent to A$23.1 million.

"The reduced profit was attributable to a changing sales mix, higher barley prices and more competitive market conditions with some segments showing declines in retail pricing," said Coopers managing director and chief brewer Tim Cooper.

"The latter renders difficult our ability to recover higher excise duties and costs arising from the imposition of container deposit schemes," he said.

Container deposit schemes cost Coopers about A$3 per carton of beer, but stiff competition in the Australian beer market makes it challenging for the beermaker to fully recover those costs from consumers.

Drought, which has hit the nation's barley production, has pushed up the price of the key beermaking ingredient, with Coopers' barley costs rising by about A$600,000 in 2018-19. Coopers' energy costs rose by about A$1 million in 2018-19, ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken ditching plastic rings and shrink wrap for more eco-friendly packaging
Heineken is ditching its traditional plastic rings and shrink wrap for more eco-friendly packaging. The “toppers” will instead be made from recyclable cardboard, NowThis reported on November 8. The company announced its plan for the toppers on November 7, saying that they are sustainably-sourced and “100% recyclable and compostable.” It has invested £22 million in technology and production facilities at its U.K. sites that will implement the new changes for their products.

They plan to roll out the new toppers on Heineken, Fosters, and Kronenbourg 1664 multi-packs by April 2020, and have them on all of their brands’ multi-packs by the end of 2021. Getting rid of the shrink wrapping will help the company get rid of 517 tons of plastic per year. The single-use plastic rings, also called hi-cones or yokes, have become synonymous with pollution and plastic waste. And with more studies being released about plastic’s devastating effects on the environment and wildlife, many companies are trying to curb their usage. “The effect single-use plastic is having on our planet can’t be ignored,” Heineken U.K.‘s marketing director Cindy Tervoort, said in a statement. “Creating an eco-friendly solution that eliminates plastic while still meeting consumer demand has never been ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Craft beer conquering Saigon’s upscale F&B outlets
A year ago, BeverageDaily took a look at the beer category in Vietnam and marvelled at how the craft scene there had been developing. Today, it’s impossible to miss craft beer’s impact on bars and restaurants.

A year ago the craft beer scene was young, it was vibrant, and it was giving artisanal brewing in neighbouring countries a kicking. Just three years after the first craft brewers launched their first commercial beers, there were upwards of 20 brands powering up Saigon’s segment.

“Craft brewing is still a long way from maturity. As is the case in most other places, quality and consistency tend to be an issue, especially as the scene was born largely from hobbyists,” BeverageDaily.com wrote at the time.

It’s incredible what difference a year makes—even if just 365 days is equivalent to 25% of the time Saigon’s craft scene has been active.

Returning this year, and loping through the streets of District 1, which is populated mostly by well-heeled Vietnamese and foreign tourists, it is impossible to miss craft beer’s impact on bars and restaurants.

Just about every upscale F&B outlet now displays signage trumpeting the range of brews found inside. Sometimes whole facades are lost to massive awnings persuading craft ...More info on site
