THE BENEFITS OF CO2 EXTRACTION
ABSTRACT
The CO2 extract of hops is a well established hop product, where extraction takes place under supercritical conditions. It contains all hop compounds with brewing value, is easy to use and to store and the shelf life is exceptional. These Japanese Researchers looked into using CO2
extraction for other botanicals that can be used in brewing. Using gentle conditions (temperatures of 40 degrees Celcius), they performed supercritical CO2 extraction
of lemon peel and coriander seeds. Changing the pressure of the CO2 resulted in different yields in hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. These extracts were used
in the conditioning phase of the brewing process and yielded better flavour results than using the corresponding raw material in the whirlpool. This demonstrates that CO2 extraction is a powerful technology to make flavour compounds from different kinds of aromatic raw materials
more accessible.

Japan & South Korea: Japan’s beer exports to South Korea fall to virtually zero in October
|
Exports of Japanese beer to South Korea, the domestic industry’s biggest overseas market last year, fell to virtually zero in October as Korean consumers shunned products from their Asian neighbor amid a dispute over wartime history, The Japan Times reported on November 28.
Last month’s figure follows a 99 percent year-on-year plunge in beer exports in September and a 92 percent decline in August, data from Japan’s Finance Ministry showed.
Last year, South Korea was the biggest export destination for Japanese beer-makers, such as Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd. Japan shipped beer worth ¥800.34 million ($7.3 million) to the country in October last year, according to the data from the Finance Ministry.
Boycotts of Japanese brands by South Korean consumers have hit companies in other sectors, too, including Fast Retailing Co.’s Uniqlo and carmakers, after Tokyo introduced tightened controls on exports to South Korea of certain high-tech products in July, a move Seoul saw as unwarranted and politically motivated.
The two countries reached a last-minute deal last week to rescue an expiring military intelligence-sharing pact, but it remains unclear whether the two can end a fight that has spilled over into trade, tourism and security arrangements. Relations between

UK: London craft breweries serving up enjoyable adventure for beer lovers
|
With more breweries in one city than anywhere else in the region, London is justifiably proud of the beer it crafts, The London Free Press reported on November 28.
Producing much more than a beverage, London’s breweries serve up an enjoyable and informative adventure for people who love a good pint – and those who haven’t discovered their affinity for beer yet.
Tastings, tours and gatherings are on tap for people looking to shake things up when going out for drinks. Local breweries are helping adults embrace the social side of responsible drinking with fun and healthy activities capped off with a beer.
London’s booming beer sector covers every preference, from craft breweries making small-batch, premium beers to Labatt Brewing Company generating beer in staggering volumes.
“Consumers now travel for an experience where they have the freedom to experiment with diverse and unique flavours and London has exactly that to offer in the beer scene. Not only do we host local craft breweries but also iconic brands in the beer realm. This plays a major factor in the uproar of brewery tours and craft beer as a whole,” says Aimy Thai, Tourism London marketing assistant.
“Each brewery in London has their own story to tell,

World: Grains and oilseeds consumption increases but stocks are still comfortable
|
World consumption of grains and oilseeds increases from year to year, stocks are reducing slowly, but supplies are still comfortable, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported at the beginning of November.
Nevertheless this year price levels recovered well from their summer lows, particularly for wheat; Mediterranean/Mideastern countries bought large quantities simultaneously and paid up to USD 25,- per ton more than a month ago.
Prices of corn and barley are around USD 10,- up since end September. Black Sea offers have dried up to an extent, that they are less competitive in world markets and give other origins, especially the EU, a better chance to sell their surpluses.
Bulls point to poor harvesting conditions in the North American plains, and poor crop outlooks in Argentina, South Africa and Australia. Bears expect the price bubble to disappear in view of sufficient supplies and increased offerings.
Politics continue to play a great part in commodity markets: the Chinese/U.S. trade negotiations, which already led to fairly large Chinese soybean purchases, the unsolved trade barriers for Canadian canola and Australian barley to China, the new government in Argentina, which will re-introduce export taxes on grains. And, finally, the Brexit has again been postponed, till 31

Canada & USA: Barley harvest completed with decent results in the US and weather damaged quality in Canada
|
Barley harvesting has finished in the U.S., and is coming to an end just now in the Canadian Prairies, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.
Weather finally cleared up to allow combining in Canada, but the damages done by incessant rain and snow storms, incl. frost temperatures, are bad. Discoloured grains, pre-germination, sprouting and even total losses are the result.
The Canadian malt industries need 1 mln tonnes, exporters have sold 5-600 thousand tonnes to China; selection of malting barley will be a major task for the industries and trade.
The U.S. reports a decent crop after all. A few hundred thousand tonnes of barley were downgraded in North Dakota; and in the end Montana and Idaho lost about 10% of their crops to winter weather.
