Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.

POURABLE HOP EXTRACTS

ABSTRACT
An article from JIH researchers provides a very good overview of the hop extract product range. CO2 extraction offers a wide range of conditions to produce products with slightly different properties. What can make CO2 hop extract difficult to use, however, is its consistency, as conventional CO2 extract has to be warmed up before dosing to make it flowable. Throughout the past few years, we have developed flowable hop extracts that are easy to dose. They can be used on the hot side or cold side of the brewing process, for bittering or aromatic purposes.

Brewery news USA: Beer production likely to hit decade-low this year
The number of U.S. brewing companies is at an all-time high, but domestic beer production will likely hit a decade-low before the calendar flips to 2020, Forbes reported on November 30.

According to the Beer Institute (BI), a national trade association representing the American brewing industry, U.S. brewers have shipped an estimated 2.6 million fewer barrels of beer year-to-date (YTD) through October compared to 2018.

The softer shipments represent a 1.8% decline versus last year, when U.S. beer companies combined to sell roughly 142.3 million barrels of beer through the first 10 months of 2018.

If that rate of decline holds through the remainder of the year, more than 11,000 permitted U.S. breweries would ship about 163.6 million barrels in 2019.

However, based on an analysis of domestic tax paid shipment figures from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) from the last nine years, U.S. brewing companies have traditionally shipped between 24 and 26 million barrels during the final two months of the year.

If beer sales were to rebound in November and December, it’s possible the industry could ship about 165.6 million barrels in 2019, which would still represent a roughly one-million-barrel decline versus last year.

Nevertheless, at the start of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ballast Point Brewing Company sold to Illinois-based Kings & Convicts Brewing
Six months before Constellation Brands purchased San Diego’s Ballast Point Brewing Company for an eye-popping $1 billion in 2015, an entrepreneur by the name of Brendan Watters sold his small hotel franchise business for a comparatively tiny $8.5 million to Red Lion Hotels Corporation, Forbes reported on December 3.

Now, four years later, the former hotelier-turned-brewery owner has agreed to acquire Ballast Point in a move that left craft beer industry watchers scratching their heads on December 3.

In a press release, Constellation — the country’s third-largest beer company and owner of popular Mexican import beer labels Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico — said the Illinois-based Kings & Convicts Brewing would purchase the Ballast Point brands, along with its breweries and brewpubs throughout the country. Ballast Point’s $48 million brewing facility in Daleville, Virginia, which opened in 2017, was not included in the transaction, however.

Financial terms were not disclosed, and the transaction is expected to close by the end of the 2020 fiscal year.

Reached by phone, Watters, an Australian who cofounded Kings & Convicts in 2017 and presently serves as its CEO, said conversations about acquiring Ballast Point began in late July.

“I sat down with one of the Constellation guys and I just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Emerald Republic Brewing Co. ready to open its doors on December 5
Emerald Republic Brewing Co. will add to the wave of development just west of downtown Pensacola when the new craft brewery opens to the public this Thursday, December 5, the Pensacola News Journal reported on December 2.

The totally gutted and revamped former auto parts garage on the corner of H and Government streets is now the home of a brand new taproom, brew house, game room and spacious 10,000-square-foot outdoor patio that wraps around the building.

When it came to the design and layout, husband-and-wife owners Phillip and Veronique Zayas said they simply tried to create a space they'd personally enjoy visiting.

"It's a place we'd feel we'd want to hang out in," Phillip Zayas said. "I like games, good beer and fun with friends, getting to know people. I think having some foosball and some arcade games is pretty fun for people, just to help them take their minds off things."

Original 2018 story: Emerald Republic Brewing Co. to open in Pensacola on West Government in 2019

Phillip Zayas first envisioned opening his own brewery a decade ago, and he's been schooled on craft brewing and has been working tirelessly on his art form since. The certified cicerone ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Rough Waters Brewing announces release of its first beers
A brewery that has been in the works for more than two years has announced the release of its first beers in the western Newfoundland town of Deer Lake, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 25.

Rough Waters Brewing has been founded by partners Jennie O’Keefe and Chris Johnson. First announced in the summer of 2017, the brewery was originally intended to be situated in Burin on the southern tip of the province, but a change in plans led to its Deer Lake location.

Rough Waters made its debut at the 12 Beers of Christmas event in Corner Brook this past Saturday, and launched retail sales out of the brewery on Sunday, with four brands – including Scallywag IPA, Sou’wester Sour, Signaler Porter, and Selkie Wheat – available in 500 ml bottles.

Rough Waters Brewing is located at 83 Wights Road in Deer Lake. Regular business hours for the retail store have yet to be confirmed, but details should be announced when available via the brewery’s Facebook page. The brewery taproom is expected to open next spring.

Brewery news USA, AR: New Natural State Beer Co. to focus on lagers
The owner of a new brewery and taproom in Benton County says the business will differentiate itself from other breweries in the region by focusing on lagers, talkbusiness.net reported on December 1.

“We’re trying to fill a niche that hasn’t been filled yet in Northwest Arkansas,” said Mark Smith, co-owner of Natural State Beer Co. It’s open at 5214 W. Village Parkway in the Village on the Creeks (VOC) development in Rogers. “A lot of the other breweries have done a good job of focusing on ales. But in general, you don’t see a lot of craft breweries focusing on lagers. [Lagers have] kind of gotten a bad rap. We want people to realize it’s not just fuzzy yellow stuff. There are all kinds of different colors and flavors we can bring with lagers.”

Smith, president and co-founder of Tatum-Smith Engineers in Rogers, and business partner Dan Clous, a director at food production company TreeHouse Foods, opened the business Nov. 23. Natural State is leasing approximately 3,000 square feet of a new two-story building owned by Willow Crossing Development, led by Tim Graham. Willow Crossing is leasing out the second floor as office space.

Smith said the brewery is in an ideal spot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Lost Canoe Brewing closes its doors to focus on Sound to Summit Brewing
For the past couple of years, Lost Canoe Brewing has operated two breweries in Snohomish, Washington, the Washington Beer Blog reported on December 2.

Just about a year after opening its doors, Lost Canoe assumed control of Sound to Summit Brewing in what is best described as an extremely non-hostile takeover. The owners of that brewery were looking to get out of the game and Lost Canoe, which is located right up the street, was happy to oblige.

Last weekend, Lost Canoe Brewing closed its doors to focus all of its attention and efforts on operating Sound to Summit Brewing. Here’s the announcement from Facebook:

3 years ago Lost Canoe was launched as a fun side-project that quickly snowballed and eventually led to purchasing Sound to Summit. For the last couple years, we’ve ran 2 breweries right down the street from each other and have ultimately decided to focus all of our attention in one place. Over the years we’ve had amazing brewers, bartenders, customers and industry friends that all made this possible. We cannot thank you all enough!

There is some good news in this announcement….

Brewery news USA, VA: Bedlam Brewing suddenly ceases operations
The warm heat from the wood-fired oven and the heavy brews from Bedlam Brewing are no more as of last Friday, November 29, according to a Facebook post.

The brewery, located in Staunton, took to its social media page after the Thanksgiving holiday to make the announcement it would be closed effective immediately.

"As we approach the holidays and take some time to spend with friends and family and I’ve somehow managed a little for introspection," Owner Mike McMackin wrote in the post on the brewery's Facebook page. "I have taken a good, long look at what I’m doing and how I’m spending my time and I’ve made some important decisions regarding my direction."

According to the post, McMackin has been dealing with some health issues, which was one of the reasons in closing the restaurant.

"As I sat on Thanksgiving Day surrounded by friends and family it dawned on me how little of my time is spent this way. A small business is difficult and my hours are more than long- I knew this going in and really haven’t regretted my choice," the post said. "Nor do I regret this one, though it is with some sadness that I make this ...More info on site

Brewery news Antigua and Barbuda: Carib Brewery looking to establish production in Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda could be in line for further economic injection, after Cabinet recently announced it has entered into discussions with a regional brewery, for operation on the island, the Antigua Observer reported on November 30.

The company, which has been identified as Carib Brewery, is already operating in some capacity in several CARICOM countries and is slated to produce more than 60,000 cases of brewed products (including beers, malts, juices and soft drinks) for consumption and export through [this] fifth brewery, if permission is granted. These products have already been established in major Caribbean markets and in Florida – where the US plant provides products for the Caribbean diaspora in the United States.

A delegation from the company met with Cabinet this week, where they examined and discussed a draft-Memorandum of Understanding. The delegation also made the case that an Antiguan brewery would have a place in the market, as OECS-trade is dominated by beer and other beverage products.

Whisky news India: Diageo to merge with its Pioneer Distilleries subsidiary
Diageo’s Indian drinks arm, United Spirits, is set to merge with its Pioneer Distilleries subsidiary after the move was approved by the board of directors, The Spirits Business reported on December 3.

Pioneer Distilleries, a listed company that is majority owned by United Spirits Limited (USL), produces alcohol for the company at a distillery in the Nanded District of Maharashtra.

“The proposed merger is part of our strategy to consolidate the India business and further simplify the operating structure, which would result in enabling business synergies and efficiencies,” said Sanjeev Churiwala, executive director and chief financial officer at USL. “We believe this decision will maximise shareholder value for both the companies.”

Once the merger is completed, Pioneer Distilleries shareholders will receive 10 equity shares in USL for every 47 equity shares in Pioneer Distilleries. Diageo’s shareholding in USL will also be revised to 55.18% from 55.2% following the move, which is subject to statutory and shareholder approval.

This summer, Diageo invested US$27.3 million to increase its shareholding in Bangalore-based USL.

According to Diageo, USL is a “highly strategic asset” that allows the company to “capitalise on opportunities within India, one of the most exciting growth markets in the world for total beverage alcohol”.

Barley news France: Wheat and barley crop condition deteriorates again, farm office says
The condition of French wheat and barley crops deteriorated again last week while farmers made limited headway with sowing and harvesting, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on November 29.

France, the European Union's largest grain producer, has had a very wet autumn so far and FranceAgriMer's data suggested a drier spell last week offered limited relief to farmers trying to wrap up winter cereal sowing and maize harvesting in soggy fields.

French farmers had completed 80% of soft wheat sowing for next year's harvest by Nov. 25, up from 74% a week earlier, FranceAgriMer said in its weekly report.

Sowing remained well behind progress seen last year, when 99% of the area had been sown by the same week, and was running a week behind the average pace of the past five years, it said.

Winter barley sowing was 89% complete by Monday, up from 86% a week earlier, and like wheat was running one week behind the five-year average.

The condition of already-sown wheat and barley crops deteriorated for the second week in a row.

An estimated 75% of soft wheat was rated good/excellent by Nov. 25 against 78% a week earlier and below a year-ago score of 82%.

The corresponding winter barley rating dropped ...More info on site

Barley news UK: AHDB posts 2020-21 Recommended Varieties List
A total of 28 cereal and oilseed rape varieties have joined the AHDB Recommended Lists, offering farmers higher yields and better disease resistance, Farmers Weekly reported on December 2.

Unveiled by the AHDB, the biggest changes seen on the 2020-21 Recommended List are for oilseed rape, including the return of a semi-dwarf option and a host of specialist varieties.

The spring barley list, which only saw one addition last year, gets six newcomers, four of which are potential malting varieties.

Splendor, on test for brewing, offers a yield improvement over current varieties at 107%. It joins the list along with Iconic, Firefoxx and Tungsten.

The two new spring barley feed varieties, Fairway and Prospect, offer increased yield over current varieties, particularly in the east and north regions. They are the only feed varieties on the list.

Finally, winter barley growers have two new two-row varieties to choose from, Hawking and Jordan, which offer small yield increases over varieties with similar agronomic packages.

Brewery news India: Uttar Pradehs gets its first microbrewery
Uttar Pradesh got its first microbrewery in an Agra restaurant where customers would be served freshly-brewed draught beer as in Karnataka, the Daily Pioneer reported on November 29.

Principal Secretary (Excise) Sanjay Bhoosreddy said that, after considering relevant documents, the state government granted permission to issue MB-5 licence for setting up microbrewery in a restaurant in Agra to manufacture draught beer for serving within its premises.

“This is the first permission granted by the state government to set up a microbrewery after promulgation of UP Brewery Rules, 2019. It will be the first microbrewery to serve non-pasteurised and unbottled beer or fresh beer in place of pasteurised or bottled beer to clients,” he said.

A Government Order (GO) in this regard was issued, asking the Excise Commissioner to take further action. The permission has been given with the condition that the terms and conditions mentioned in the UP Brewery Rules are strictly complied with.

“Setting up microbreweries will not only help in serving quality fresh beer to clients but also generate employment resulting in increase in the state’s revenue,” Bhoosreddy said.

The idea to serve unbottled beer in bars and restaurants is modelled around the liquor policy of Karnataka and Telangana. The decision was taken to ...More info on site

Whisky news Japan & Russia: Japan’s Niigata Beer to start distilling whisky in Russia
Niigata Beer stands out among the brewers and distillers of Niigata Prefecture in northern Japan. It chose to brew specialty beers, and later whisky, in a region famous for sake, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on November 30.

The area's affinity for the traditional Japanese drink meant that demand for the company's craft whisky was low. Ninety percent of the distillery's output is shipped abroad. Overseas, however, the spirits are a hit, and the company plans to start distilling whisky in Russia through a joint venture with a Russian partner.

Demand for high-quality beer and whisky is rising in Russia. Meanwhile, Niigata's public and private sectors have long promoted economic exchanges with the Russian Far East, which lies just across the Sea of Japan. Direct flights connect Niigata and Vladivostok, where Niigata Beer's new distillery will be located, every summer.

"A friend from college pushed me to start thinking about making beer in Russia," said Ken Usami, founder and CEO of Niigata Beer. The friend told him that a Russian company complained it could not find high-quality beer domestically, and it was eager to learn brewing techniques from Japan.

Usami contacted the company and launched a project to brew craft beer in Russia. When ...More info on site
