POURABLE HOP EXTRACTS
ABSTRACT
An article from JIH researchers provides a very good overview of the hop extract
product range. CO2 extraction offers a wide range of conditions to produce products with slightly different properties. What can make CO2 hop extract difficult to use, however, is its consistency, as conventional CO2 extract has to be warmed up before dosing to make it flowable. Throughout the past few years, we have developed flowable hop extracts that are easy to dose.
They can be used on the hot side or cold side of the brewing process, for bittering or aromatic purposes.

India: Microbreweries report drop in sales for the first time ever
|
Sales at microbreweries across India have fallen for the first time ever, as the segment faced dry days during elections, a prolonged monsoon and an overall economic slump that forced consumers to cut down on discretionary spending, the Economic Times reported on December 6.
About half a dozen microbrewery owners said 2019 has been the worst year so far, making them cut operational and logistic costs to keep business afloat and compensate for 20-30% loss in the past three months.
“For the first time I have borrowed money from the bank this quarter to meet the shortfall,” said Ajay Nagarajan, co-founder of Bengaluru-based brewpub Windmills Craftworks which witnessed a 12% decline in revenue in the past three months. “We have either lowered price or removed exotic food such as salmon and lamb from the menu. We have trimmed our food cost, HR budget and discretionary staff by 10%.”
The ongoing economic slowdown has forced many companies to reduce their entertainment budgets which in turn has affected footfalls at brewpubs and bars. Traditionally, summer months are considered to be the best period for beer segment, followed by October-December due to weddings and year-end parties. So far, microbreweries have

Australia: Balter Brewing Company purchased by Carlton & United Breweries
|
The founders of Balter Brewing Company called it “a massive day” as it announced the craft brewery had been bought by Carlton & United Breweries, the Food & Drink Business reported on December 6.
Balter started on the Gold Coast in 2016. Co-founders include Bede Durbidge, Scott Hargrave, Josh Kerr, Stirling Howland, Mick Fanning, Ant Macdonald, Sean Ronan and Joel Parkinson.
In an open letter to its customers, the founders said it had been “a massive day. We’re rapt to say we’ve just finalised a deal to become a part of the Carlton & United Breweries family”.
They reassured drinkers the beer would stay the same and Scotty (Scott Hargrave) would remain as head brewer.
Balter CEO and co-founder Ant Macdonald said: “We’re proud to have grown the business to this point and we see the benefits this new partnership will bring as Balter enters its next growth phase.
“This deal will help us achieve our sustainability goals, upgrade capacity and hospitality at our Gold Coast brewery and create new jobs.
CUB CEO Peter Filipovic said: “In a few short years Balter has become a craft leader through its commitment to quality and by building a brand that appeals to all beer lovers.
Filipovic said: “We will

Belgium: AB InBev in talks with unions after breweries return to work
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev is in talks with unions after staff staging a blockade of breweries in Belgium returned to work, local media reported on December 6.
The company said its Belgium production sites went back to production in the evening on December 5. Discussions with unions were scheduled to take place on December 6.
According to media reports, staff at AB InBev's breweries in Jupille and Leuven blockaded the sites from the afternoon of December 2. Unions and the company are in dispute over guarantee of income in the event of dismissal, the Brussels Times reported.
In September, drinks giant Diageo averted industrial action at its Scottish production facilities after securing a last-minute deal with trade unions. The Scottish sites handled bottling, maturation and distillery operations for Diageo brands including Johnnie Walker, Gordon's gin and Smirnoff vodka.
AB InBev's Leuven brewery produces a number of brands including Stella Artois. The Jupille brewery is best known for Belgian beer Jupiler.

India: United Breweries Limited launches specialty beer Ultra Witbier
|
India’s largest brewer, United Breweries Limited (UB), on December 4 announced the rollout of speciality beer - Ultra Witbier - under its flagship Kingfisher brand, riding on the growing popularity of craft brews in India’s top metros, LiveMint reported.
Ultra Witbier that has been rolled out in Karnataka and Goa, is the brand's first non-lager beer. Available in 3 SKUs (stock keeping units), a 330ml bottle, a 500ml can and a 650ml bottle, the brew is priced at ₹110, ₹150 and ₹185, respectively in Karnataka.
UB will subsequently sell the brand in Maharashtra, Delhi and Haryana.
Over 18-24 months in the making, the Kingfisher Ultra Witbier comes at a time when the Indian market has seen a rise of new-age beer brands that appeal to urban millennials with their light brews and hip branding. As a result, brands such as Bira, Simba, The White Owl, among others, have seen a surge in popularity in the country's top cities. Ultra Witbier 330 ml is priced at par with Bira White and Simba Jungle Wheat in Bengaluru.
Currently, the company brews the brand in its brewery in Karnataka with orange, coriander, spices sourced from Belgium and hops sourced from the US. Its ABV or alcohol by

India: Andhra Pradesh liquor consumption rate comes down
|
The new liquor policy that was brought with an aim to implement a complete ban on liquor in phased manner has been yielding positive results as the consumption rate has come down, according to the Andhra Pradesh government, the Times of India reported on December 4.
In a statement released on December 3, the state government claimed that the sale of liquor has come down by 25 per cent and beer sales have fallen by 54 per cent in the month of November when compared to corresponding period in the previous year.
According to the data released by the government, liquor sales have come down from 29.62 lakh cases in November 2018 to 22.31 lakh cases in November 2019 which is a fall of around 25 per cent.
The sale of beer has fallen sharply by around 54 per cent. While 17.80 lakh cases of beer were sold in November 2018, only 8.13 lakh cases were sold in November 2019.
However, the revenue from liquor has remained the same despite the sharp reduction in consumption with the imposition additional retail tax (ART), according to excise officials.

Canada: CMBTC issues list of recommended malting barley varieties
|
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) has issued its list of recommended malting barley varieties for the 2020-21 marketing year. The list contains varieties that hold the most promise for producers in terms of performance, quality and marketability. All varieties on the 2020-21 Recommended Malting Barley Variety List have been pilot scale tested by the CMBTC and exhibit good malting and brewing characteristics.
In addition to established varieties such as CDC Copeland, AC Metcalfe and AAC Synergy, Canada has a promising suite of new varieties under market development with excellent malting and brewing characteristics as well as improved agronomic and disease packages. Up-and-coming varieties such as CDC Bow, AAC Connect and CDC Fraser are among the next generation of high-quality performers and will be available in commercial quantities in 2020.
“We are at a crossroads with respect to malting barley varieties in Canada. After nearly 20 years as the dominant variety, AC Metcalfe production has dropped considerably over the past three years. It’s a marvelous variety that has served customers of Canadian barley well, however our new varieties have excellent malting and brewing quality characteristics, and exhibit significantly improved field performance, including higher yields and better resistance to lodging,” says Peter
