Brewery news USA: Congress moving to extend by another year tax breaks for beer, wine and distilled spirits
The U.S. Congress is moving to extend by another year tax breaks for beer, wine and distilled spirits worth hundreds of millions of dollars that were initially approved as part of tax reform in 2017, Reuters reported on December 17.

Without the extension, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said it would have faced $275 million in higher taxes, while a beer industry group said it faced $130 million in higher taxes. One wine group said the bill will allow California wineries alone to avoid more than $150 million in higher taxes.

Bills to make the tax reductions permanent have overwhelming support in Congress. The House approved the spending bill on December 17 that includes the tax provisions, while the Senate is expected to follow suit.

Chris Swonger, who heads the Distilled Spirits Council, said in a statement the measure would provide "significant relief for craft distillers across the country who were facing a 400 percent tax increase beginning Jan. 1."

Jim McGreevy, president and CEO of the Beer Institute, said the beer industry supports 2.1 million U.S. jobs. He said the bill will provide brewers and beer importers "the certainty they need to continue growing their businesses, provide good-paying jobs across ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: New Belgium Brewing’s employee owners vote in favour of selling company to Kirin-owned Lion Little World Beverages
New Belgium Brewing Company’s employee owners have voted in favor of selling the company to Kirin-owned Lion Little World Beverages despite human rights groups’ concerns over the Japanese beer giant’s business dealings in Myanmar, Brewbound.com reported on December 17.

New Belgium and Lion announced the proposed sale on November 19, with the Australasian beer company poised to acquire 100% of the Fort Collins, Colorado-headquartered brewery — the fourth largest Brewers Association-defined domestic craft brewery — in an all cash transaction. The deal’s value has been pegged at between $350 million and $400 million, according to Forbes.

The completion of the transaction was contingent on a vote of New Belgium’s employee owners after the institution of 100% employee-ownership in 2012. The deal has also cleared antitrust regulatory approval. The transaction is now expected to be finalized by the end of 2019, pending customary closing conditions.

“Today, New Belgium ESOP participants voted in favor of the proposed transaction with Little World Beverages,” New Belgium CEO Steve Fechheimer said in a statement shared by the craft brewery. “This result moves us one step closer towards New Belgium Brewing officially joining Lion Little World Beverages. We’re excited about the next chapter for NBB and continuing to prove ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Wyandotte Beer Co. open since late November
Whether brewing beer or opening a business, one thing remains true: These things take time, Concentrate reported on December 11.

John Friederich and Brian Elsesser certainly know that lesson well. Nearly a decade of hard work and persistence, however, and the pair have cause to celebrate.

Wyandotte Beer Co. opened its doors in late November.

The brewery takes over the old Treasure Alley Mini Mall space in downtown Wyandotte. After three years of renovations, Friederich and Elsesser have completely transformed the place, gutting the structure and basically re-building it from scratch. Four walls and a dream.

Now it’s decked out in earth tones, woods, and plants. And beer. They were going for a cozy atmosphere--something between a coffee shop and a bar, Friedrich says.

"There are a lot of bars in Wyandotte but not many with this vibe. We have big, long communal tables with playing cards and board games," Friederich says.

"It’s been a joy to see that it’s really working. Everyone that comes is interacting, playing games, laughing, enjoying each other’s company. That’s really been our goal all along."

The twelve-tap brewery currently features a stable of six different kinds of beer, including an IPA and golden ale. Friederich says that they want to keep ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Dos Sirenos Brewing Co. ready to launch just after Christmas
After more than a year of renovations inside a Cevallos Street space that used to house The Beach Bar, the first batch of beers will be ready for public consumption just after Christmas at Dos Sirenos Brewing Co., San Antonio’s newest brewpub located inside the Lone Star Art District, mySanAntonio.com reported on December 12.

Owners Mike and Kari Sireno will open the doors Dec. 27, and they plan to have at least five of their beers available. Sireno hopes to have his house Hefewiezen, Belgian wit, a pair of ales and a special Russian imperial stout named Morepheus flowing for opening day.

Plans are to grow the lineup to eight different beers, and they have installed a 20-handle tap line that they hope to fill in time as they expand their seasonal recipes and options.

“This has been a long time coming,” Mike Sireno said, who co-brews the beers with his son Jacob. “We started this process in October 2018, and totally gutted everything that was here.”

The kid-friendly brewpub has 3,600 square feet of interior space and another 1,000 outside in a covered outdoor patio area that will contain game stations and televisions.

And when the beer flows, so will the food, with a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Rincon Reservation Road Brewery preparing to open in Southern California
Rincon Reservation Road Brewery—which goes by the nickname 3R Brewery—is the first certified Native American-owned and operated brewery on tribal land in Southern California, westcoastersd.com reported on December 17.

The new name references a trail along the San Luis Rey River the Luiseño Indians traveled from the Warner Hot Springs area of Palomar Mountain to modern-day Oceanside in order to hunt, gather and fish. Tribal villages were located along the trail at Rincon and Pauma. Today, Rincon Reservation Road runs through several Indian reservations, including Rincon, Pechanga, Soboba, Pala, Pauma and La Jolla.

The brewery will debut with a quartet of initial offerings: Oasis Blonde Ale (4.2% alcohol-by-volume), Rez Dog Hefeweizen (5%), Red Rattler Amber Ale (5%) and Chief IPA (6%). Those beers will be available on draft and canned. They are the product of brewmaster Shawn Steele, who spent the past two years as director of brewing for Coronado Brewing, after 14 years with Karl Strauss Brewing where he headed quality control. In the future, it is a goal of 3R Brewery to get members of the tribe involved in the company where brewing is concerned.

Rincon Reservation Road Brewery is located at 777 South Resort Drive on the same property ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Fish Brewing Company sold to new owners
In June of 2019, Fish Brewing Company of Olympia, Washington entered receivership, a process that is similar to bankruptcy. Since then, the company has operated as usual but only to benefit its creditors. On December 17, it was announced that Fish Brewing Company has been sold. The sale includes the brewery and the pub, the Washington Beer Blog reported.

According to a news release, the new owners are a married couple, Kate Craig and Josh Carrigan. Apparently, Josh Carrigan owns a bar in Seattle, though no details were provided in the press release. His wife, Kate Craig, is said to work in international business. Both were raised in the Puget Sound area, in Issaquah and Yelm.

According to the announcement, the couple was energized to purchase the business because of the quality of the products, the great employees, and the legacy of the brand in the Olympia community and beyond.

Carrigan and Craig say that they are committed to working with the employees to build a roadmap for the future, centered on the Fish community. While initially focusing on ramping up production and innovation to make more great beer and cider. They are eager to explore opportunities to work with South Puget Sound ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Ghost Brewing Company opens in Bay Shore
The long-awaited arrival of Ghost Brewing Company is here, bayshore.greaterlongisland.com reported on December 13.

On Friday, December 13, the brewery — headed by longtime BrickHouse Brewery brewmaster Paul Kosmic — opened in the former Fire Island Beer space inside the Great South Brewery on Drexel Drive.

As previously reported, Ghost features a 15-barrel brewhouse and a tasting room that can hold up to 70 people.

Kosmic and his team are using Ghost’s moniker in naming its beers in the realm of the supernatural and otherworldly. Think Ghost Witte, Vanishing Point, and Afterlife.

“In general a dark, ethereal, type of vibe,” said Komsic.

The space, which will be dog-friendly, isn’t for the little ones, say the owners.

“It’s going to be an adult atmosphere,” said Kosmic. “We’re not planning on allowing children in… we want more of a speakeasy vibe.”

In addition to crafting their own brews, Ghost also acquired a farm brewery license, allowing them to serve up spirits and mixed drinks.

Going forward, the new brewery will be running on a limited hour basis until fully opened. When that happens, Ghost will have hours Wednesdays through Sundays.

Brewery news USA, OH: Fretboard Brewing + Public House already open in Hamilton
A Cincinnati craft brewery and the restaurant group behind Tahona Kitchen + Bar and S.W. Clyborne Provision & Spirits has opened a new brewpub inside of the former Quarter Barrel Brewery space, WKRC TV Cincinnati reported on December 17.

Blue Ash-based Fretboard and the Looking Glass Hospitality Group opened the Fretboard Brewing + Public House in Hamilton on Dec. 11.

Brewery news USA, FL: LaBelle Brewery opens its doors in LaBelle
People who live in LaBelle have a brand new restaurant, event space and brewery all in one to call their own, NBC2 News reported on December 17.

NBC2 got a first look at what the LaBelle Brewing Company is bringing to the small town and surrounding counties.

The space combines fresh, locally sourced foods from Buckingham Farms with craft beer from LaBelle Brewery.

You can sit inside or outside and enjoy a meal or a beer, and on special nights, there will be live music.

The restaurant has created 30 full-time jobs in the rural area and during its construction employed dozens of local workers.

“It’s been local from A to Z. All the construction workers that built this building, most of them were right here in LaBelle,” said owner Dan Peregrin.

The restaurant is open most days for lunch and dinner.

Brewery news USA, MN: Granite City Food & Brewery files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
St. Cloud-born Granite City Food & Brewery announced it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to allow for a reorganization of its businesses, according to a news release issued on December 17.

Granite City Food & Brewery's premiere location opened in June 1999 in St. Cloud. Over the past two decades, the chain has expanded to 13 states. The company also operates Cadillac Ranch restaurants in four states.

"After an intensive review of strategic alternatives, Granite City's Board of Directors determined that a reorganization of its businesses was needed. The Board further determined that the restructuring could only be accomplished by filing for Chapter 11," the release states.

The company intends to file a motion seeking approval of auction and sale procedures, and has announced a possible sale to KRG Granite Acquisition LLC for $7.5 million plus certain liabilities. The transaction remains subject to bankruptcy court approval and an auction process, which is expected to conclude in February.

Granite City has secured a $5 million debtor-in-possession loan, subject to bankruptcy court approval, to fund operations through the auction and sale process, the release states.

Management expects to continue operations without interruption during the Chapter 11 case.

Brewery news Japan: Asahi Breweries to stop disclosing sales volume data
Asahi Breweries Ltd. said on December 17 that it will stop releasing monthly sales volume data for its beer and quasi-beer products this month, switching to the disclosure of the value of sales from January, Nippon.com reported.

The major Japanese beer maker is apparently intending to put more emphasis on boosting its profitability while moving out of the race for market share in terms of volume.

Some sources say Asahi Breweries, which has ranked top in the Japanese beer and quasi-beer market for nine straight years through 2018 but has recently been facing a sales slump, may be attempting to prevent its possible loss of the No. 1 status from being publicly known at a time when second-ranking Kirin Brewery Co. is rapidly catching up with the industry leader.

"We've pursued volume for a long time, but now need to change the mindset of our employees to maintain profits," Asahi Breweries President Kenichi Shiozawa said at a press conference in Tokyo.

Specifically, Asahi Breweries will end the announcement of year-on-year percent changes in sales volumes for each of beer, "happoshu" low-malt quasi-beer and so-called third-segment beverages with little or no malt content, and instead will start to disclose year-on-year rates of change in the ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Suntory to begin selling its first whisky blended in India
Japanese beverage maker Suntory said on December 16 it would begin selling its first whisky blended in India, as it pushes further into the world's largest market for the spirit, Reuters reported.

Suntory, which already sells whisky in India including from its subsidiary Beam Suntory, would begin selling a new product which uses imported whisky blended in India, a spokeswoman said.

Brewery news Puerto Rico: Recognition of craft beer slowly growing in Puerto Rico
As recently as five years ago, the terms “craft beer”, “microbrew”, or even “cerveza artisanal” were not commonplace in Puerto Rico. They still aren’t: Costly import taxes, regulatory roadblocks, and natural disasters make running any business here challenging, let alone one most Puerto Ricans don’t see as a necessity, VinePair reported on December 16.

But thanks to establishments like La Taberna Lúpulo bar in Old San Juan, recognition of small-batch brewing is growing. To enter Lúpulo, meaning “hop” in Spanish, is to encounter the unexpected: Coolers are stuffed with the likes of Orval, and taps flow with Bell’s Hopslam. Co-owner Zalika Guillory has worked hard to get the most sought-after mainland craft brands and Trappist imports from Europe. Mostly, though, she wants to show off local brands, which she pours on 40 to 60 percent of the bar’s 38 taps.

“It’s important for Puerto Ricans to know people here are contributing [to the beer scene] and doing it in a way that’s uniquely Puerto Rican,” Guillory says. Lúpulo, along with the island’s 13 craft breweries, is doing just that.

While Guillory and a handful of fellow publicans are properly serving and promoting their island’s offerings, owners of craft breweries here struggle mightily to ...More info on site

Barley news Kenya: East African Breweries Limited commercializes Africana barley variety
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has announced that they have commercialized the Aliciana barley variety a year after it was launched, Kahawa Tungu reported on December 12.

EABL made the announcement during the annual Field Day in Mau Narok following trials of the barley variety with farmers who have reported higher yields and greater resistance to water lodging.

The Field Day, an annual event that brings together stakeholders within the barley value chain, is an event where stakeholders converge to learn, share experiences and showcase their products and innovations. Barley is the main raw material for EABL’s beers.

EABL continues to invest in research in an effort to offer production solutions to barley growers through its subsidiary East African Malting (EAML).

EABL also launched the 8th edition of the Barley Growing Handbook as part of farmer capability building during the Field Day.

The Barley Growing Handbook summarizes the current recommendations on the barley varieties to be cultivated by farmers, seed rates, fertilizer usage, recommended insecticides, fungicides, herbicides to be used on barley and seed dressers. The recommendations in the Handbook are based on research data generated by the EAML research department and her partners.

This year, the event brought together hundreds of farmers and other partners ...More info on site
