Russia: Russia increases beer excise and minimum price on vodka
|
As of January 1st, Russia has increased the minimum price on vodka and other strong liquor, as well as the excise duties on beer and wine, the Kommersant reported.
Minimum price on vodka is now RUB230 versus RUB215 last year.
The excise on beer containing 8.6% of ethyl alcohol has been increased to RUB41 per litre from RUB39 in 2019.
The excise on beer with less than 0.5% alcohol is unchanged.
Besides, the government introduced a unique excise system on both domestic and imported wine, the Kommersant said.

India: Court gives green light to sale of Vijay Mallya’s economic assets, including United Breweries shares
|
Exactly a year after he was declared India's first fugitive economic offender, a Special Court in India has given the green signal to banks to dispose of the economic assets of absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya to recover their dues, the Business Insider India reported on January 2 citing official sources.
The directions to the consortium of 15 banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) to dispose of Mallya's economic assets like financial securities and shares in his companies, which have been under attachment since 2016, came on Tuesday, December 31.
The lenders' consortium has to recover over Rs 6,000 crore plus interest from Mallya, currently in the United Kingdom, after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed the Special Court last year that it had no objections to the same.
The Special Court has, however, stayed its order till January 18 to enable all the parties concerned to file their appeals before the Bombay High Court, the sources said.
Among the assets are Mallya's shares in the United Breweries Holdings Ltd, the value of which is not clear, but which were attached after he was declared a proclaimed offender.

Spain: Low and zero-alcohol beer accounts for 13% of total beer sales in Spain
|
While American publications herald the arrival of “the New Sobriety” on the backs of part-time teetotalers and alcohol-free bars, Spaniards have been drinking low and zero-alcohol beer since the 1970s, vinepair.com reported.
According to the Asociación de Cerveceros de España, the country’s brewers association, these beers account for 13 percent of total beer sales. Today, Spaniards are the world’s largest consumers of alcohol-free and low-alcohol beer.
“In our country, beer is consumed cold with friends and family, in hospitality, during the whole week and almost always with something to eat,” Cristina de Aguirre, director of public affairs at the brewers association, says. “These moderate consumption patterns explain that non-alcoholic beer, while maintaining the flavor of the traditional variety, is considered by Spanish consumers as an excellent alternative when, due to different circumstances, they cannot, should not, or do not want to consume beverages with alcohol content.”

Venezuela: Economic crisis making consumers switch from beer to cheaper traditional liquor
|
Venezuela's traditional cocuy liquor is making a comeback due to the country's punishing economic crisis, which has put rum, whiskey and even beer financially out of reach for many, FRANCE 24 reported on December 28.
Agave - which grows in the semi-arid mountains of Bobare and is the main ingredient in cocuy - has been used in Venezuela since before the Spanish conquest, and it is being kept alive by liquor artisans such as 84-year-old Dolores Gimenez.
He began producing cocuy at the age of seven in the eastern state of Lara, but just a few "small jars that were well hidden."
"If the police found you with cocuy, they put you in jail and smashed your distillation cylinders," he said at his still.
Since those days, Gimenez - who has 25 children and 103 grandchildren - has refined the process and now provides joy to those who have seen their favorite alcoholic beverages disappear out of reach thanks to inflation that the International Monetary Fund predicts will hit 200,000 percent in 2019.
"It's three years since I touched a beer," Nelson Vargas, 66, said bitterly.
His pension is barely worth the equivalent of $3 a month - the price of just two beers.

UK: Heineken, Brewdog hoping to turn Dry January into sales opportunity
|
Brewers Heineken and Brewdog are hoping to turn Dry January into a sales opportunity with a string of deals and promotions on their low ABV and alcohol-free beers, The Drinks Business reported on January 2.
Traditionally, ‘Dry January’ is considered a quieter month for the UK on-trade, with consumers abstaining from alcohol and avoiding the pub altogether.
However, sales of beers with an ABV of 1.2% or lower have soared over the past two years. According to market analyst Mintel, 28% of beer drinkers are now starting to cut back on consumption due to health concerns. Meanwhile, analysis by EeBria Trade shows that sales of low and no-alcohol beers have risen 381% since 2017.
Sales of no and low alcohol drinks in the UK on-trade rose by 48% to around £60 million last year, according to CGA’s latest report.
Now, brewers with the capacity and resources to produce non-alcoholic beers on a grand scale are hoping to turn the start of the year into a more lucrative period for the industry.

Before enjoying a beer in India, savvy drinkers will follow a simple process. This is needed to remove the glycerin that saturates most beers and is used as a preservative in a country with a rudimentary approach to storage, BeverageDaily.com reported on January 3.
First, open a bottle of cold beer and upturn it into a glass half-filled with water. Leave it there for a few minutes as you watch a slick of clear oil fall out of the bottle into the water.
When the surge turns into a trickle, and the bottle appears about a quarter emptier, now is the time to drink it—the beer, not the slick. But even after taking this approach, most seasoned drinkers won’t feel very satisfied. Indian beer is hardly made for the enthusiast.

UK: Spring barley variety Diabolo tipped for success in 2020
|
A dual-purpose spring barley variety with very high yields is tipped for success in 2020 in the UK, having almost completed its probation period with end users, FarmersWeekly reported on January 1.
LG Diablo, which was first recommended in 2018, achieved full approval for distilling in 2019 and is on course to get its brewing stripes later this year.
As with all new spring barleys destined for malting, Diablo came in under the radar, says Clare Leaman, cereals specialist with Niab Tag. She points out that there is always a time lag between recommendation and market uptake with these types.

“Diablo got its full approval for distilling in June 2019 and moved to its second year of provisional approval for brewing in the MBC system at the same time,” she says.
“So it is progressing through the testing regime as expected, with just a bit of additional data required for it to clear the final hurdle.”
Brewing approval is always based on the quantity of results from malting tests, so firm final decisions aren’t made by the industry until there is enough data to consider, she says.

USA: Surge in craft breweries leads to geographic expansion of hops production
|
The surge in craft breweries may be fueling an unprecedented geographic expansion of hops production across the US, Futurity: Research News reported on January 2 citing a new study.
The findings suggest that as more craft breweries emerge around the country, so may new opportunities for farmers.
Hops are a key ingredient in beer production, providing aroma and bittering characteristics. Before 2007, hop production in the US was limited to only three Pacific Northwest states—Oregon, Washington, and Idaho—says Claudia Schmidt, assistant professor of agricultural economics in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State.
Now, 29 states are involved with hop production, Schmidt says, citing a report from the Hop Growers of America.
“Our study is the first to systematically show that the number of hop farms in a state is related to the number of craft breweries,” she says. “It suggests that in areas where hop production is possible and not cost-prohibitive, breweries are expanding markets for farmers and providing an opportunity to diversify farm income.”
