Brewery news USA: Wine, beer consumption drop in the US, ready-to-drink and spirits categories shows biggest growth
While 'rosé all day' is a popular motto for many, as a whole, people in the U.S. are drinking less wine than they have in the past, CNN reported on January 14.

In fact, wine consumption has dropped for the first time in 25 years, according to a new report from industry group IWSR. IWSR collects its sales figures by surveying financial releases and other proprietary data points.

Not to fear — Americans haven't cut alcohol altogether. Rather, they have been reaching for more spirits and ready-to-drink cocktails and are especially gravitating towards drinks like hard seltzers, following a broader trend of drinking less calorically dense alcoholic beverages.

In contrast, beer has been on the decline for the fourth year in a row. This year, sales fell 2.3% in total, and sales of domestic beer brands, like Budweiser, fell 3.1%, its analysis showed. In contrast, craft beer sales grew by 4.1% and low or non-alcoholic beer sales increased by 6.6%.

The category with the biggest growth was in the -ready-to-drink category, with sales growing 50% last year. The surge has been attributed to the extreme popularity of spiked seltzers such as White Claw, Truly and Bon & Viv. The industry is now worth ...More info on site

Barley news USA: American Malting Barley Association approves addition of new malting barley varieties to list recommended for 2020
The American Malting Barley Association Board of Directors has approved the addition of AAC Connect, LCS Odyssey, Moravian 164 and Moravian 170 to the recommended list of malting barley varieties for 2020, the Post Register reported on January 13.

Idaho is the top state country for barley production.

AMBA is a trade association of brewing, distilling and malting companies and the list is meant to inform US producers on the malting varieties that the industry will be using in the coming year. Not all varieties will be used in large quantities and growers are encouraged to contact their local elevator, grain handler or processor to gauge market demand for any variety grown in their region prior to seeding.

Bill Legge developed AAC Connect at the Brandon Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. It is a two-row, spring malting barley variety that was registered in Canada in 2016. It has plump kernels, good resistance to lodging, improved resistance to FHB, and has greater yield than AC Metcalfe and CDC Copeland. The variety is licensed to Canterra Seeds in Canada and distributed in the US by Meridian Seeds.

LCS Odyssey, a spring two-row malting variety, was developed by the Limagrain UK breeding program and is marketed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Mark Anthony Brewing chooses Glendale as newest brewery location
Mark Anthony Brewing has chosen Glendale as the location of its new state-of-the-art brewery and BrewPure facility. Construction is slated to be completed in record time. The facility will be in Glendale’s “New Frontier” at the Loop 303, AZ Big Media reported on January 11.

In a race against time, to meet the explosive demand for White Claw Hard Seltzer, the new 916,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility will be up and running in under seven months. In other markets, projects like this can take years. “The primary reason we selected Glendale was the innovative thinking and personal support of Governor Doug Ducey, the city of Glendale, the Arizona Commerce Authority, and their willingness to embrace our vision and commit to the support required for our rapid build-out and aggressive timeline,” said Mark Anthony Brewing President John Sacksteder. “Once complete, this new facility will be a beacon for the advanced manufacturing capabilities of the City of Glendale and the state of Arizona”

Mark Anthony Brewing anticipates investing more than $250 million in the facility that includes the unique BrewPure process which allows White Claw Hard Seltzer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Mike’s Harder Lemonade and Cayman Jack Cocktails to taste like no other. ...More info on site

Anheuser-Busch InBev will undertake an $85 million expansion of its Cartersville facility and create 12 new jobs, a state agency announced on January 13.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development announced that the longtime Bartow County community partner will make the investment in its 27-year-old brewery.

Brewery news USA, OH: North High Brewery planning new location in Dublin, Ohio
Columbus-based brewery North High Brewery announced it will open a new location in Dublin Bridge Park this spring, ABC6OnYourSide.com reported on January 8.

The brewery has partnered with start-up COhatch to be a part of a new space at the former Brazenhead location at 56 N. Brewery news Canada, ON: Katalyst Brewing opens in Ontario’s Muskoka region
Almost a year after it was first announced, a new brewery has opened in Ontario’s Muskoka region in a building that was once home to one of the province’s original craft breweries, the Canadian Beer News reported on January 9.

Katalyst Brewing was originally launched in 2016 by Mark Verok and Krystal Perepeluk, who had its flagship Symington Saison brewed under contract while scouting for a bricks-and-mortar space in Toronto. The pair changed their plans in 2018, when they sold the Symington brand to Henderson Brewing, and shifted their location hunt to Muskoka.

That location was soon found in a new retail and residential development in a historic building in downtown Bracebridge that housed Muskoka Brewery from 1994 to 2012. Katalyst occupies 2,500 of the building’s 20,000 square feet, and features a 10 hl brewhouse with six fermenters, and a taproom and retail shop.

Open since last week, the brewery currently has seven beers on tap including Interlude Cream Ale (4.2% abv), Scorched Earth Smoked Porter (5% abv), Rearview Pale Ale (5% abv), Days & Nights German Pilsner (4.5% abv), Road Traveled Belgian Wit (4.2% abv), Dead Weight Maibock (6.5% abv), and Barrel Roll 80 Shilling (5.4% abv). Brewery news USA, GA: Reformation Brewery opens its third location in Smyrna
Smyrna's first brewery opened its doors on January 10 along the Chattahoochee River at The Eddy at Riverview Landing, according to a news release from the brewery, MDJOnline.com reported on January 10.

The Smyrna location at 6255 Riverview Road, less than a mile southwest of Interstate 285, will be Reformation Brewery's third. The brewery has locations in Woodstock and Canton.

The space is part of the newly developed The Eddy at Riverview Landing riverfront property.

The 2,500-square-foot space with 16 taps will emphasize India pale ales and sours, along with some of the brewery's more popular choices, according to Jessica Miller, a spokesperson for Reformation. Retail to-go beer such as six-packs and growler fills will also be available, she said.

The space will also house "barrel-aging projects" and other experiments, and ciders are also on the list for future development, Miller said.

Past rules and ordinances have prevented breweries from opening in the Smyrna area, but Reformation enters in an era of reformation.

"We believe local independent breweries are an important part of the long-term health of communities," said Reformation CEO and co-founder Spencer Nix. "It’s an opportunity to reform expectations about the role small businesses like ours have to play in serving as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Forward Brewing getting ready to launch in Eastport
In the coming weeks, an Eastport nano-brewery will open its doors on Fourth Street, becoming the first establishment of its kind in the neighborhood, the Capital Gazette reported on January 11.

Forward Brewing, a 28-seat restaurant and taproom, will be housed in a former marine electronics store at 418 Fourth St., which has been in Camden Bowdren’s family for more than 30 years. Bowdren, a lifelong Eastport resident, and his wife Claire are aiming to open in early February with the possibility of some soft openings in late January for food and beer tastings.

The location will offer an intimate beer hall style, with a menu that includes a rotating mix of small plates, soups, salads and an entree or two.

The term nano-brewery is assigned to establishments with a brewing system that is even smaller than microbreweries. A smaller system allows for flexibility in what kinds of beer can be offered, Cam Bowdren said.

“One of the things that we really like is that it makes us nimble and dynamic with what we’re supplying,” he said. “We can try something, and if it’s not our favorite beer then we have tried it, and we’ve shared it, and we’ve run out of it.”

Brewery news USA, PA: Attic Brewing Company joining Philly’s craft beer scene
A new addition to Philly’s craft beer scene has arrived in one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. Attic Brewing Company is announcing its Grand Opening on January 17th coinciding with the 100 year anniversary of the start of prohibition. Among a growing brewery scene in the Northwest Philadelphia area, Attic is the first craft brewery in Germantown. They are opening their doors for soft opening sneak peaks on Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 18 from 5pm-10pm, offering craft beers that are brewed on site and guest taps, Brewbound reported.

Attic Brewing transformed the former Blaisdell Paper Pencil Company, built in 1893, into a ten barrel brew house and taproom to serve as a social hub for the Germantown community. Attic Brewing maintains the historic aesthetics of the area inside and outside of the brewery.

In the taproom, Attic has given another life to vintage lighting from J&N Lighting, reclaimed furniture, an 1890’s back bar, and a custom 40 foot front bar built by Philadelphia Salvage from repurposed materials (the longest they’ve ever made!) Owners Laura and Todd Lacy also outsourced to the community for local artists to showcase their work on a huge 15 foot wall display in the taproom.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lake Superior Brewing closed for undetermined amount of time
What many claim as Duluth’s first craft brewery has closed its doors for an undetermined amount of time, TwinCities.com reported on January 8.

Lake Superior Brewing’s taproom has been locked since December and many claim production has ceased. Owner Lars Kuehnow declined to comment.

A neighbor of the brewery said production stopped sometime in October and the taproom was open until the end of November.

“I just know that the doors are locked … the taproom is closed. There’s no production,” said Jeff Frey, who runs a photography business.

Other building tenants shared that they haven’t seen people go in and out of the taproom over the last month or encountered a smell that they associate with brewing beer.

The taproom’s doors were locked during normal business hours Friday, and its office was dark Monday.

The brewery’s landlord company, King Properties, confirmed that the business is closed.

Christine King said the owners hope to sell the brewery. With its machinery still intact and the business continuing its lease, “it would be very easy for someone to move in and (start it),” King said.

“They’ve been great tenants and had a great business,” King said. “I hope somebody else is interested in starting a brewery.”

In 2017, Kuehnow and Lisa ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Owners decide to close Wilds Woods Brewery in Boulder
After seven years of slinging Ponderosa Porters and Treeline IPAs, the couple behind Boulder’s Wilds Woods Brewery have decided to close the brewery to pursue life’s next adventure, the Boulder Daily Camera reported on January 7.

After opening in 2012 as a nano-brewery, Wild Woods has since grown from a small two-barrel operation with a taproom to a seven-barrel operation bottling beers for distribution across the Front Range.

But Wild Woods announced early in 2020 that its last day of business would be Saturday, January 11, a decision coowner Erin Evans said was “purely personal.”

“We just needed a breather from being business owners,” she said.

Evans said she and her husband, Jake, wanted some more time to spend in nature doing the type of activities that inspired the business and gave the brewery its theme.

“While we’re still passionate about craft beer, Jake and I just have a desire for more time to get back outside and be with our friends,” Evans said.

But while the couple decided it was time to move on, Evans said the experience of taking their home brew recipes and opening up their own brewery was memorable.

“We just had a lot of fun with it,” Evans said. “We like the ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Analyst forecasts lower input costs for global brewers
Global brewers are in line for lower input costs as a result of declines in the previously-high price for the aluminium used to make cans, the Packaging Strategies reported on January 14.

The past year has seen "significant" falls in aluminium prices, Bernstein's Trevor Stirling said. With companies typically hedging the cost of the metal packaging about a year in advance, 2020 should see a 5%-to-10% decline in can costs, Stirling has forecast.

Aluminium accounts for about half the total cost of a can, according to the analyst.

Stirling said brewers in the U.S., Western Europe and Japan are set to benefit most from the fall in can costs, as they use the packaging more than companies in developing markets, where glass is preferred. The analyst added that Western Europe brewers will likely see the least pressure on costs in 2020 because of the can tailwinds, as well as a "very strong" barley harvest in the north-east of the continent.

Malting barley prices for the 2019 crop were down 25% on the previous year, with a 15% decrease for malt, Stirling added. The U.S. is in line for a 5-to-10% decline in malting barley prices.

Despite the rosy outlook for input costs, Stirling warned that ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries sees craft beer sector as ‘big enough for all players to coexist’
India’s small, yet growing, bottled craft beer market is starting to attract the interest of big brewers, Quartz reported on January 13.

Last month, the country’s biggest beermaker by market share, United Breweries (UBL), launched Ultra Witbier, under its popular Kingfisher brand in Karnataka. The Bengaluru-based company has now launched the craft beer, its first, in Goa and is prepping to enter cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Gurugram.

In India, where whiskey and rum have been the first choice of drinkers for long, evolving consumer tastes are fuelling growth in this category, originally brewed in small quantities in microbreweries.

“For two years, we have been studying the craft beer segment closely. It is well-placed to benefit from Indian drinkers’ growing preference for visually appealing and less-bitter drinks,” Gurpreet Singh, head of marketing at UBL, said in an interview with Quartz.

Despite its deep pockets and pan-India distribution network, UBL does not see itself as a big threat to other craft beer players. “Smaller craft beer brands and players such as Bira 91, Simba, and White Owl have created this niche segment and it is big enough for all the players to coexist,” added Singh.

He also talked about the company’s expansion strategy and the need ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Heineken Vietnam Brewery pays $39.7 mln in back taxes and fines for 2018 transaction
Heineken Vietnam Brewery has paid VND917.2 billion ($39.7 million) in back taxes and fines for a 2018 transaction, VnExpress International reported on January 13.

Singapore-based Heineken Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. had, at the end of 2018, struck a deal valued at over VND4.8 trillion ($207.7 million) with the Heineken Vietnam Brewery. Under the deal, the Singaporean firm transferred its entire stake in its Vietnamese subsidiary to the latter.

The tax payable on the deal was VND823 billion ($35.6 million), but Heineken Asia Pacific claimed it was exempt from paying it under the double taxation agreement signed by the governments of Vietnam and Singapore.

However, the General Department of Taxation ruled that the tax had to be paid because the real estate value in the deal was over 50 percent of the assets involved in the deal.

The department confirmed that it has received in full the payment of back taxes and fines.

Another major FDI corporation, Coca-Cola Vietnam, has been ordered to pay VND821.4 billion ($35.4 million) in back taxes and penalties stretching back over nine years.

The company, which has been suspected of engaging in transfer pricing fraud to evade taxes, has paid VND471 billion ($20.4 million), or 57.3 percent of the amount, at the ...More info on site

Barley news Kazakhstan & Iran: Kazakh barley exports increase significantly to meet demand from Iran
Kazakh exports of barley have grown significantly over the past decade to meet demand from Iran, its primary customer, USDA said in its January report.

Since 2010/11, at least half of Kazakhstan’s barley exports have been destined for Iran, reaching a decadal high of 94 percent of total exports (for a volume of 1.3 million tons) in 2017/18.

Despite this growth, Kazakhstan remains the smallest of the major players in the world’s barley export market, ranking seventh globally for most of the decade. The European Union and Russia are forecast to be the largest exporters of barley in 2019/20, with export volumes totaling two to three times that of Kazakhstan.

As Kazakhstan’s exports have grown, Iran’s balance sheet also shows corresponding growth in barley imports over the same time period. The growth in imports has fueled expansion of Iran’s barley feed use.

The current forecast for Kazakhstan’s 2019/20 barley exports is the highest to date at 1.8 million tons. Although Iran also imports large amounts of barley from Russia and the European Union, in all likelihood, Iran will continue to import a substantial percentage from Kazakhstan.
