Brewery news Canada: Beer now accounts for less than 38% of Canada’s total alcohol sales
Canadians are blessed with more microbreweries than ever — more than 1,000 at last count — but the nation doesn’t seem to be as enamoured by the amber brew any more, according to a new report by a food analyst.

“Only 15 years ago, beer accounted for 50 per cent of all sales of alcohol. That number is now below 38 per cent, according to AC Nielson,” wrote Dr Sylvain Charlebois, professor and senior director at Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University in a new report on January 29.

“As consumers are moving away from beer, the industry is left wondering what the future holds for this very important sector of the economy,” Charlebois said, noting that beer demand fell 4 per cent in 2019 — the largest reduction since Prohibition.

The analyst believes younger consumers are more interested in “ready-to-drink mixes like vodka-and-soda” and not as attached to a cold one as the older generation that cherishes its stouts, hops and suds.

“Market shifts are forcing beer marketers to think twice about how they have sold beer to Canadians. For example, beer and hockey have always formed a natural, very effective co-branding scheme,” Charlebois noted. “Given where the market is going, that relationship ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & UK: AB InBev seeing huge area of opportunity in online beer sales
Online purchasing makes up less than 1% of the US beer category – and therefore represents a ‘huge area of opportunity’, according to ZX Ventures, AB InBev’s global growth and innovation group, BeverageDaily.com reported on February 3.

In the US, online grocery shopping is expected to more than double between 2019 and 2020. And yet a third of US shoppers looking for small formats aren’t even aware that beer can be bought online.

ZX Ventures – which is focusing on ecommerce as one of its seven global business units - surveyed 2,000 consumers in the US and UK on their online buying habits. It found five key trends in online beer buying.

And while it’s no surprise to see millennials in urban centres lead the market for online shopping, there’s also an opportunity for online retailers to offer convenience to older shoppers.

1. Awareness gap A third (33%) of US small format shoppers still aren’t aware that you can buy beer online, according to ZX Venture’s survey. And yet there’s growing interest in buying beer online. The survey found that 30% of American beer shoppers are interested in buying beer online: up from 20% in 2017.

2. Beer can drive more purchases online Nearly 70% of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Imperial City Brew House becomes Sarnia’s newest craft brewery
Sarnia’s newest craft brewery is the Imperial City Brew House, the Sarnia and Lambton County This Week reported on January 30.

Partners Craig Brodie, Kyle Blandford, Matt Whitney and Mike Barker spent two years planning, filling out paperwork and turning the former XS Cargo store at 1330 Exmouth St., into a brewery and tap room.

It opened on Jan. 24.

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback,” Brodie said.

Hours are Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

They offer four Imperial City beers – a light lager, Canadian pale ale, Irish stout and a Bohemian pilsner – on tap and in cans.

“We have two more bubbling up,” Brodie said about a hazy New England IPA and a cream ale with vanilla expected to be available soon.

“These are all our first batches and we’re really proud they turned out the way they did,” he said.

A grand opening is planned for Feb. 8.

“After that weekend, we’re going to look at possibly adjusting the hours and opening on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Brodie said.

“We usually save the other days for production. There’s a lot to do behind the scenes so everybody can drink delicious beer.”

The partners, with help ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Aristaeus Brewing aims at opening in Langhorne before end of this year
A new brewery is planning to open in Middletown, LevittownNow.com reported on January 30.

Lifelong Middletown resident Harry Arnold announced that he is moving forward with plans to open Aristaeus Brewing. The goal is to open up the five-barrel craft brewery in a roughly 3,000-square-foot space at 2475 Big Oak Road in the township’s Langhorne section before the end of 2020.

Arnold, who recently retired after more than 30 years at Verizon, told LevittownNow.com the brewery concept has been in the works for several years. Arnold has been perfecting his recipes and brewing ability by working with industry experts and the members of the ALEiens Homebrew Club that meets at the Hulmeville Inn.

“Everything I’ve done in the last five years has led to the point that I knew I was going to retire and make the leap,” he said. “I’ve worked to perfect the craft, design my own recipes, and figure out the processes.”

The new brewery space is in the design stages and a lease has been signed. Arnold said he is working with engineers and architects to make the place special and appeal to the community.

“I purposely wanted to be small and like a community hub where people can come and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Urban South Brewery to launch its Houston location on February 29
Houston's renowned brewing scene welcomes a new addition as Urban South Brewery, the leading craft brewery founded in New Orleans, announces the grand opening of its first satellite brewery in Houston's Sawyer Yards District, Yahoo Finance reported on January 29.

Urban South - HTX will open its doors to the public on February 29, 2020. Located at 1201 Oliver Street, the operation is headed by Houston locals General Manager Dave Ohmer, R&D Brewer Justin Slanina and Taproom Manager Marin Slanina. The team brings a combined 43 years of experience in the brewing and food and beverage industries.

The new 14,000 square-foot facility includes a 10-barrel research and development brewing operation, canning line, a dedicated barrel and blending room, and a public taproom with a large patio and beer garden. Urban South - HTX will put its own innovative twist on traditional beer styles - including hazy IPAs, signature stouts and barrel-aged sours - that won't be found elsewhere. The taproom will host regular beer releases, events and parties throughout the year.

"We wanted our very first satellite brewery to celebrate the deep connection between the cities of Houston and New Orleans," said Jacob Landry, Urban South Brewery's Founder. "After months of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Rincon Reservation Road Brewery officially opens at Harrah’s Rincon
Harrah’s Rincon officially opened the first Native American craft brewery in Southern California Wednesday, January 29, featuring a signature IPA made from indigenous American hops, the Times of San Diego reported.

The new Rincon Reservation Road Brewery was celebrated with a traditional prayer and blessing, Native American Bird Singing and a ribbon cutting at the resort and casino in Valley Center.

“This is so unique in the craft world,” said brewmaster Shawn Steele. “You see all the farms around here? We’re going to try plenty of local ingredients.”

The brewery’s signature IPA — “Chief” — uses hops that originated in the mountains around Santa Fe rather than traditional European varieties.

It’s one of four beers already in production, and Steele said future brews will use blueberries, raspberries, citrus and other local ingredients to add unique flavors.

The brewery began as SR76 Beerworks, but is now operated by the Rincon Economic Development Corporation, the business arm of the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians. Steele, a 22-year veteran of the craft brew industry, was recruited from Coronado Brewing Company.

The brewery is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Human Robot Brewery to open its doors in Philadelphia on February 6
This Thursday, February 6th, at 4 p.m., Human Robot Brewery will finally open its doors to the public. The brewery, which is a collaboration between Jake Atkinson, Chris Roller and Rachael Morris, also houses Poe’s Sandwich Joint, which reopened in this location late last year, the Philadelphia Magazine reported.

Human Robot is named for the two styles of beer the team brews. Human refers to the classic, European-style beers, while the Robot side is a reference to more modern, out-there techniques that yield hazy IPAs and “crazy huge stouts,” says Atkinson. For now, there are five beers on tap, plus local wine and spirits, a cider, plus a “neutral hard seltzer” that you’ll be able to spike with different flavors of your own choosing.

The team originally planned to open the brewery in a building they purchased in Kensington, but when Saint Benjamin’s closed last year, they decided to set up their operation there, since the space was completely fitted as a brewery already. They will eventually expand to Kensington, with plans to have a sour operation and space to barrel-age some of their beers.

Poe’s Sandwich Joint now also has an extended menu which includes some excellent sandwiches, loaded cheese fries, and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: New Ontario Brewing Company receives limited liquor sales licence
The New Ontario Brewing Company has received support from North Bay City Council for a Manufacturer’s Limited Liquor Sales Licence, BayToday reported on January 31.

The licence will allow the microbrewery to sell and serve its product to customers as it expands to a new location.

“The approval for our licence is critical. Under Ontario law for a ‘By the Glass’ licence, there needs to be a municipal resolution,” explained company president and brewmaster Michael Harrison.

“The city’s resolution is more about bringing in the tourist element, bringing in the people from town so they can come into the brewery where it is fresh, right off the line and enjoy our product.”

Renovations are currently underway for a move from its current location on Cassells Street to the former Northern Honda building on Seymour.

The brewery has been operating out of its Cassells Street location for nearly five years.

“Moving into this much larger location is going to give us a little bit of room to breathe. But more importantly, room to produce more product, reach a larger marketplace and then hopefully grow employment in our community.”

Harrison is hoping within a couple of years to grow the company footprint by five to 10 full-time ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: MPH Brewing begins construction in Montgomery
A group of friends and neighbors, inspired by the pubs they spent time at while in the U.K., are opening the city of Montgomery's first craft brewery, WKRC TV Cincinnati reported on January 29.

MPH Brewing began construction on Jan. 6 and is hopes to open in Montgomery by late March. It's a project by Bill Cook, Bill Bolger, Tony Pishotti and Steve Tosh, longtime friends and neighbors in Montgomery.

The goal is to open a common room for the city of Montgomery, a place where the neighbors can get together, meet and enjoy a beer.

Brewery news USA, PA: Homestead’s Enix Brewing listed for sale
Enix Brewing has been listed for sale, PGH City Paper reported on January 28.

The online brewery resource Brewing In Pennsylvania notes that three weeks ago, the Homestead brewery was listed for sale on Probrewer.com. This post advertised Enix’s 18,000-square-foot brewery and 4,000 square foot patio, which includes a second-floor bowling alley.

The listing states, “EVERYTHING included in sale, including property, full liquor license, all tables, chairs, restaurant equipment, & brewing equipment.”

Enix is putting up their entire, 15-barrel brewhouse up for sale; their listing continues, “Why spend TONS of money and time building out a new brewery/restaurant when everything is here for you already??” The post also notes that owners are selling the property to “explore other options.”

In late December of 2019, Enix announced via social media they would be temporarily closing for “company restructuring” and there were “some amazing new beers coming in 2020.”

It's unclear if the restaurant/brewery is still open. As of yet, the brewery has made no formal announcement of their closing; their website and Instagram pages are still available, though the Facebook page has been deleted. Calls to the brewery were not answered.

Enix opened in August of 2018, run by brothers David and Victor Rodriguez. David was a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: New Brighton-based brewpub Barley John’s Inc. files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
New Brighton-based brewpub Barley John’s Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while it works to repay its debts, the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on January 29.

The company listed between $100,001 and $500,000 in assets in its Jan. 20 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota. Its estimated liabilities are in the same range.

Secured creditors include First National Community Bank of New Richmond, Wis., which holds the mortgage on the brewpub’s 781 Old Highway 8 SW property in New Brighton, the Minnesota Department of Revenue and the U.S. Small Business Association.

The largest unsecured creditor is Capital One, which is owed payment on a $12,100 credit card balance, according to court documents. Next is St. Paul-based Crosstown Mechanical, owed $9,500 for HVAC and commercial refrigeration work.

A Jan. 23 ruling by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kathleen Sanberg allowed Barley John’s to use its cash collateral to continue normal business operations.

The brewpub does about $500,000 in annual sales, according to a court filing.

Barley John’s brewpub was opened in 2000 by John Moore and Laura Subak. Subak is the company’s president and chief operating officer.

They did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brewery news USA, CO: Blind Faith Brewing to close after only a year of operation
Blind Faith Brewing, which took over the former home of Saint Patrick's Brewing along the South Platte River in Littleton, has announced on Facebook that it will close on February 9. Blind Faith was only open for a year, Westword reported on January 29.

"Thank you for walking on this beer journey with us the past few years," the brewery wrote. "We have met many wonderful people and made some friends and had some great beer. We will be closing our doors ...and shutting down our operations. Stop by, have some fun and beer and enjoy some fantastic deals between now and then."

Founded by Tom Martinez, a longtime employee of Coors Distribution Company, the brewery, with its gorgeous beer garden, was an offshoot of DeSteeg Brewing, which Martinez and Ken Klispie bought in 2017. The plan was to run both brands out of both breweries, but the pair eventually split, with Martinez taking Blind Faith and Klispie taking DeSteeg.

The name Blind Faith came from Martinez, who suffered health problems in 2016 that caused him to lose his sight shortly thereafter.

DeSteeg, which is located in the alley just south of 44th Avenue between Stuart and Tennyson streets, remains open and will celebrate ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Beer drinkers slapped with the first of two tax hikes of this year
Australian drinkers on February 3 were been slapped with their first of two tax hikes of the year, thanks to an automatic CPI increase that slugs beer drinkers every February and August, The Shout reported.

For a standard beer with 4.4 per cent ABV, they are now A$1.59 for draught beer and A$2.26 for packaged beer. The volume-weighted average of those two (assuming 25 per cent is sold as draught) is A$2.09 per litre of beer.

Australians are paying the fourth highest excise tax on beer in the world and that tax quietly increases every six months, a fact that Heffernan says is “appalling”.

Speaking to the National Liquor News Industry Leaders Forum¸ Heffernan said that beer tax reform would be high on the agenda for the Brewers Association in 2020.

“It’s clear that Australians simply don’t know what or how much tax is in a beer and, when illuminated, the reaction ranges from shock to outrage. Our putting a toe in the water on this issue publicly has been instructive. We will be building on that in 2020.”

The tax on beer has gone up every six months for the last 35 years and the increase of February the 3rd is the 71st consecutive ...More info on site

Whisky news Japan: Suntory unveils limited-edition 55-year-old Yamazaki single malt whisky
Japan’s Suntory Holdings on January 30 unveiled a limited edition 55-year-old Yamazaki single malt whisky, which it will sell for 3 million yen ($27,347.31) a bottle, aiming to bolster its credentials as a premium whisky maker, Reuters reported.

Only 100 bottles will be sold from June 30, and buyers will be chosen by lottery, the company said.

Suntory and other premium whisky makers have been faced with depleted stocks of aged whiskies after an unexpected surge in popularity of single malts in the past decade. Many have turned to blends without age statements to manage supply.

The company, for example, ended sales of its popular 17-year Hibiki, which appeared in the film “Lost in Translation”, in 2018. In the past few years, Suntory has issued more no-age blends and has depended on strong sales of much cheaper whisky highballs for growth.

But many whisky aficionados still seek out aged single malts, and Kengo Torii, head of Suntory’s whisky division, said it wanted to shore up its reputation as a premium manufacturer.

“We were concerned that we had not been able to deliver anything new for a long time regarding the Yamazaki brand,” he said.

Blended from whisky matured in mizunara and white oak casks, the edition ...More info on site

Brewery news India & UK: Indian craft brewer Bira 91 rolling out its craft beers in the UK
Independent Indian craft brewer Bira 91 is rolling out its range of craft beers, including Blonde Lager, White Ale and Indian Pale Ale, across the UK, the Bar Magazine reported on February 4.

Brewed in India with Belgian recipes, Bira 91 is on a mission to “drive the global shift in craft beer towards more colour and flavour”.

The three-strong portfolio begins with Blonde Lager, a “vibrant, crisp and clean” 4.5% ABV lager made with American-grown Cascade hops and Mandarina Bavaria hops, a new German hop variety out of the hops research centre at Hüll in Bavaria, featuring aromas of mandarin orange.

White Ale (4.7% ABV) is Bira 91’s modern take on a Belgian-style wheat beer. Brewed with orange peel, which gives the beer a “citrus burst with a soft, fruity finish”, it has a low bitterness and can be paired with salads, cheese and fish.

Making up the trio is the brand’s Indian Pale Ale. Described as “tropical, balanced and bright”, the 4.5% ABV IPA is brewed with toasted and caramel malts, new age hops and finished with pomelo fruit, one of the largest citrus fruits in the world. The “easy drinking” beer offers “subtle sweetness and nuttiness”, and can be matched with ...More info on site
