USA, CA: Line 51 Brewing Company holds soft opening of its Oakland brewery
|
Line 51 Brewing Company's tie to AC Transit is certainly apparent in its name, but the brewery's appreciation for public transportation takes on new heights with the soft opening of its Oakland brewery, SF Gate reported on February 7.
The owners of Line 51, PT Lovern and his wife Leti Lovern, have finally opened the doors to their new 7,500-square-foot brewery and bar space in Oakland. Front and center, the couple have placed a loving tribute to the bus line they once hauled kegs of their brew on in the early days, when bringing their product to the bars.
That tribute: an authentic, restored AC Transit bus from 1972, complete with beer taps installed onto the side of it.
"We took the beer on the actual AC transit bus from American Steel Studios [in Oakland], which is where we distributed out of our warehouse. We rode the 14 to the 51, and then we rode it down in the 51, with a 15-gallon keg of beer," PT Lovern recalled of those early days.
Seeing someone lugging an entire keg onto public transit was quite the sight, and Lovern said the moment was captured on someone's phone and "went viral." The transit company, in turn,

USA, IL: Cellar Works Brewing Co. to open second brewpub in Winfield Township
|
A new business is brewing in Winfield Township, TribLIVE reported on February 10.
A large digital sign outside of Cooper Station Restaurant, which closed abruptly and without notice to the public in 2019, hints “Something is brewing” to passing motorists along Route 356.
Cellar Works Brewing Co. owners confirmed plans are underway to open a second brewpub and event space there.
“Everybody’s really excited and they loved Cooper Station, but I think they’re excited to see what our take on that space will be,” said Cellar Works co-owner Tim Bauer, 47, of Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze neighborhood.
Offering handcrafted beer made in small batches, the independent brewery has cultivated a strong local following since opening in 2017 at 110 S. Pike Road in Buffalo Township.
Butler County real estate records show Cellar Door Brewing LLC bought the former Cooper Station property from Lora C. Rothen on Dec. 30 for $400,000.
The property sits on a little more than 3.5 acres and offers 12,000 square feet of space with a separate building that will serve as a wedding/reception venue, managed by co-owner Laura Lasher.
Extensive remodeling is planned and will take several months, said Bauer, who serves as general manager.
“We call it rustic contemporary with a minimalistic feel, coupled

USA, VT: Kraemer & Kin Brewery to become first brewery in Champlain Islands
|
The Champlain Islands were one of the last regions of Vermont without a brewery to call their own, but the new Kraemer & Kin Brewery in Grand Isle is putting them on the state's beer map, Seven Days reported on February 11.
When the family-owned business — operated by Heather, Levi and Christie Kraemer — makes its debut at the Great Ice! event in North Hero on Friday, February 14, the product will reflect years of preparation and experience in the beer industry.
"We really weren't sure how to do it, but my family has deep roots in North Hero, and we knew we wanted to stay in the islands," Christie told Seven Days.
The trio's nontraditional progress toward opening a brewery began six years ago, when they established a hop yard on Christie's family property in North Hero. "That let us create relationships with local brewers through the hops, and we learned the industry from that perspective," she said.
During that time, both Christie's husband, Levi, and his sister, Heather, dove into the beer world, learning the skills of their future business. Most recently, Levi worked as the head brewer at St. Albans' 14th Star Brewing.
It took three years for the family to

USA, NY: HopWins brewery to start serving customers on March 21
|
Bay Shore's latest brewery has finally set an opening date. HopWins brewery, on 1460 N Clinton Avenue, announced in a video posted to its Facebook page that the business will officially be open next month, Patch.com reported on February 11.
The brewery, which will be joining the growing collection of breweries in town, will start serving customers on March 21.
HopWins is owned by two brothers-in-law who decided to turn their longtime hobby of home brewing into a business.
Deer Park resident William Hoppe and Steve Winn, a Bay Shore native, started off brewing beer about 8 years ago using a $25 home brewing kit from Target, and now they will be serving up their beer to the public with help from their wives, sisters Jennifer Winn and Rhiannon Hoppe.

Canada, BC: Fox Mountain Brewing Co’s opening taking longer than anticipated
|
The owner of a new brewery in Williams Lake wishes he was ready to open, but said it’s taking longer than anticipated, the Williams Lake Tribune reported on February 8.
“There are a lot of moving parts — it’s pretty complex,” said Dave Reedman, who with help from several contractors, has been transforming the former Greyhound bus station into Fox Mountain Brewing Co.
Reedman’s application has gone through a rezoning process and a development permit public hearing with the City and a 30-day provincial government liquor licence referral.
Additionally, there was a break-in at the site in November resulting in theft of more than C$25,000 in tools and equipment, which Reedman said was a major setback.
“The welder lost more than C$20,000 of his stuff. I lost a few saws, compressors and hand tools, but actually got some of my stuff back so that was good.”
Overall, a dozen people have been working on the construction and when the brewery opens, it is anticipated there will be 15 to 20 full-time and part-time staff.
“I really don’t have a specific opening date, but can say we have been working hard,” Reedman said. “It’s an older building, built in 1986, and we’ve changed a lot.”

Japan: Korean boycott of Japanese goods costs Asahi Group US$27 mln last year
|
Japanese beer and beverage maker Asahi Group Holdings said a South Korean consumer boycott of Japanese goods cost it around 3 billion yen (US$27.32 million) last year, CNA reported on February 13.
"The impact is continuing in the current year," Atsushi Katsuki, a senior Asahi executive told reporters.
Tensions between the two countries escalated after a South Korean court in 2018 ordered Japanese companies to compensate Koreans who were forced to work for Japanese occupiers during World War II. Japan later retaliated by restricting exports of high-tech materials to South Korea.

Malaysia: Customs cancels Carlsberg’s RM21 mln bill of demand
|
Lady luck seems to be smiling on Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd. The brewery announced on February 14 that Customs has cancelled its bill of demand claiming for sales tax and penalty totalling RM20.65 million, The Edge Markets reported.
The company told the stock exchange that it received a letter from the Selangor State Director of Royal Malaysian Customs on February 13.
The letter confirms that "the bill of demand for sales tax amounting to RM13.76 million and the penalty amounting to RM6.88 million for the period of July 1, 2011 to Jan 14, 2014 has been cancelled", said Carlsberg in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.
The cancellation took effect on Jan 15, 2020, it added.
This is the second piece of good news in two consecutive days for Carlsberg’s shareholders. The company will be included in the MSCI Global Standard Index effective Feb 28, and this has lifted the stock to a record high.
On the bill of demand, to recap, in September 2014, Carlsberg said it was slapped with excise duty, sales tax and penalty claims amounting to RM56.4 million.
The state customs had then demanded excise duty amounting to RM35.7 million, sales tax amounting to RM13.76 million and a penalty amounting to RM6.88 million

Australia: Western Australian barley growers likely to be hit hardest as a result of coronavirus
|
Western Australian barley growers will likely be the hardest hit in the country as a result of coronavirus, according to a report from the Australian Export Grain Innovation Centre (AEGIC).
The study, which was released on February 10, also found that the coronavirus will much more severely affect WA farmers than the SARS outbreak of the early 2000s.
AEGIC chief economist Ross Kingwell said infection rates to date suggest the coronavirus outbreak is a more serious health threat than the SARS epidemic.
"The global cost of the SARS was an estimated US$40 billion (A$59.7 bln), it infected 8098 people with 774 deaths in at least 17 countries," professor Kingwell said.
"As of February 10, 2020, 40,171 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 908 deaths were reported.
"Coronavirus is an economically much more serious set of potential outcomes for WA farmers."
Professor Kingwell said the threat to WA barley growers was potentially the severe as the State is the nation's major source of barley exported to China - and which is by far the main grain exported from Australia to China.
"When we combine what's happening in China with the ongoing effect of the African swine fever epidemic, it's causing a marked reduction in feed demand in China,"

Japan: Court upholds ruling rejecting petition from Sapporo for return of claimed overpaid taxes
|
Tokyo High Court on February 12 upheld a lower court ruling rejecting a petition from Sapporo Breweries Ltd. for the return of 11.5 billion yen in what it claims to be overpaid liquor tax on a beer-like beverage product, Nippon.com reported.
In 2013, the Sapporo Holdings Ltd. unit launched Goku Zero as a so-called third-segment beer-like drink, subject to a lower liquor tax rate.
But tax authorities decided that Goku Zero could not be classified into the third-segment category. In 2014, Sapporo relaunched Goku Zero as a "happoshu" quasi-beer product with a higher tax rate.
The company voluntarily paid 11.5 billion yen in liquor tax for the product with the higher tax rate, but an in-house investigation found that it was a third-segment beverage.
After tax authorities turned down Sapporo's request for the return of the tax paid, the company filed a petition with Tokyo District Court in 2017, only to be rejected.

India: Diageo seeks legal view on objections to using United Breweries shares
|
Diageo has sought legal recourse against the Enforcement Directorate objections on using United Breweries (UBL) shares, which the spirits major claims were provided as security for certain loan liabilities of Watson and are part of the security package to which Diageo Holdings Netherlands BV (DHN) is entitled, the Economic Times reported on February 11.
On the other hand, top officials at the federal probe agency said it does not recognise the claim since Diageo has created an artificial pledge to use the UB shares. ED officials said that when Diageo was aware that Mallya owed funds to the company, it should not have stood as a guarantor for his loans and paid them off.
“We believe it is an artificial pledge created by Diageo. Our priority is to ensure that dues owed are rightfully given to the government,” an ED official said. Diageo declined to comment.
Legal experts close to Diageo said that the PMLA/ FEOA case includes claims to UBL shares. “The special court order to the consortium of banks covers only movable assets of Vijay Mallya and does not cover the UBL shares. Diageo is impleading because of the risk of the PMLA/FEOA piece affecting its security. It is just

Croatia & Bosnia: Croatia's Stanic Beverages to launch production in Bosnia
|
Croatia's Stanic Beverages, part of Stanic Group, plans to launch this year beer production in Bosnia where it currently distributes a large number of international beer brands, SeeNews reported on February 12 citing a Bosnian municipality.
Stanic Beverages will build a beer production plant in Kresevo, a town in central Bosnia located some 40 km west of Sarajevo, the Kresevo municipality said in a statement earlier this week.
The investment will be made in partnership with the local authorities who will provide the company with the necessary water resources for the planned beer production, the municipality said without disclosing the value of the investment.
At present, Stanic Beverages, via its Kresevo-based Bosnian unit Boreas, is the distributors of beer brands such as Heineken, Amstel, Karlovacko, Zajecarsko Pivo, MB and Pils Plus, among others, on the Bosnian market.
Boreas is also active in the distribution of strong alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic drinks and tobacco products.
In 2015, Stanic Beverages opened a fruit juice bottling plant in Kresevo for its Juicy brand, aiming to meet the rising demand for its products in the region and beyond.
Stanic Group comprises eight companies operating in the fields of production, distribution and sale of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, technical goods and

South Africa: South African Breweries to cut 500 jobs
|
South African Breweries - now under the AB InBev banner - is looking to cut 500 jobs, eNCA reported on February 12.
The company and the Food and Allied Workers Union met for the first time at the CCMA on February 12 as part of a Section 189 process.
This came a day after data from Statistics South Africa showed an increasing trend in job losses over the years.
This will be the second retrenchment process in as many months for the group after it is said to have retrenched 33 people last year.
The company says the retrenchments are necessary in light of current economic conditions and says it's in line with its merger conditions that the cuts will be limited to specific workers.
