Barley news Canada: Barley production forecast to decrease in 2020-21
For 2019-20, barley production in Canada increased to 10.4 million tonnes, largely due to higher harvested area and higher yields, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their latest report published on February 14.

The total supply of barley increased by 17% from 2018-19 as higher production more-than offset the decrease in carry-in stocks which are historically low. The domestic use of barley is expected to increase significantly from 2018-19, largely due to higher feed use.

Exports are expected to increase slightly while carry-out stocks increase sharply, the analysts said.

The average price of feed barley is expected to be lower than 2018-19 due to the increased supply in Canada, the US and around the world. The supply of barley in the US increased due to higher production and projection for higher imports, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Carry-out stocks are forecast to rise due to an increase in supply exceeding the growth in total use.

World barley production and supply increased to the highest level since 1994-95. Barley production increased in the major exporting countries, including the EU, Russia and Ukraine. World trade is projected to rise due to higher supply and forecasts for increased imports ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: BBQ Holdings agrees to acquire Granite City Food and Brewery’s assets
BBQ Holdings Inc., the parent company of Famous Dave’s, announced on February 13 a purchase agreement to acquire the assets of craft beer chain Granite City Food and Brewery. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, FSR magazine reported.

The move is BBQ Holdings’ first foray outside of the barbecue sector. Its other two brands are the recently created Clark Crew BBQ and fast-casual prototype Real Famous BBQ.

The move comes two months after Granite City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection so it could reorganize and facilitate a structured sale. Richard Lynch, chairman of the board and CEO of Granite City, said in an affidavit in December that competition in casual dining hurt operating performance and margins. Seven restaurants were closed prior to the filing. At the time of the bankruptcy, the beer chain employed more than 2,200 people across 15 states.

Granite City, founded in 1999, had 25 units, located primarily in the Midwest, at the time of the filing.

“This meaningfully accretive acquisition of Granite City Food and Brewery aligns with our strategy to accelerate growth and expansion as a multi-brand restaurant company,” Jeff Crivello, CEO of BBQ Holdings, said in a statement. “As an award-winning concept, Granite City is a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Backside Brewing Co. coming to downtown Sutherlin
Beer lovers throughout Sutherlin are likely raising a pint to toast the news that Backside Brewing Co. outpost is coming to town, NRToday.com reported on February 15.

Backside owners KC and Savannah McKillip announced plans to open, by early summer, a second pub in downtown Sutherlin in a century-old building at 105 W. Central Avenue. The original Backside Brewing is in Roseburg.

“We’ve been entertaining the idea of a second location for a while, and this just fell together,” KC McKillip said. “It’s really a cool layout. And the City of Sutherlin was so excited and so motivated to get a new business into the downtown district, that was extremely encouraging.”

The historic building that will house the new Backside used to be home to Culvers Meat Market, run for years by “Grandpa Jack Culver.” The nearly 2,500 square foot building holds about 50 people and features wood floors, tin ceilings, brick walls (some of it covered by plaster), roll-up front doors and a full kitchen — something the original Backside does not have.

That kitchen will allow the Sutherlin Brewing Co. Outpost to offer a bigger menu then the one in Bradenton, adding such items as hamburgers and fried foods, KC McKillip said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Local Group Brewing set to open in Houston on February 28
Local Group Brewing is set to open at 1504 Chapman in Houston’s Near Northside on Feb. 28, according to a release on February 14.

The idea for the neighborhood brewpub, from owners Michael Steeves, Todd Donewar and James "Huggy Bear" Wolfe, is two-fold. “You could call us a brewery that has its own restaurant, or a restaurant that brews its own beer," said Steeves. "We’re looking to expand the brewpub experience; elevate it. Nothing takes a backseat here."

A 2,700 square-foot brewhouse, helmed by Wolfe who is formerly of Southern Star Brewing Co. and No Label Brewing Company, will debut with an abbreviated menu of small-batch beers. Options will include Li’l Star stout; New England imperial India pale ale Double Vertigo; American sparkling ale Sparkle Motion; and a hefeweizen called Chef’s Hefe.

“I want to make the beer that people drink. I also want to make great beer that we’re proud of. We want to create, experiment and push the edges of what beer can be,” Huggy Bear said. “The landscape is changing. I think people are more open to experimentation.”

Coming soon are a horchata-inspired Horchatanita; fruited kettle sour Athena’s Elixir; two additional imperial India pales and several non-beer options including Texas wines, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: More Brewing Co. sets opening date on February 29
More Brewing Co. will be opening its new microbrewery in Huntley, 13980 Automall Drive, on Feb. 29 at 11 a.m., the Northwest Herald reported.

The opening will be preceded by a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

A business development agreement approved by the Huntley Village Board initially set Dec. 31 as the date renovations would be completed and operations could begin. However, the village board had to amend the agreement after construction and licensing setbacks pushed the date back to the end of February.

During the grand opening, More Brewing will have beers on tap from the Huntley location and its original Villa Park brewpub as well as a few special guest beers. A full food menu also will be available.

Tours are also planned every 30 minutes from noon to 4 p.m. but will be based on a first come, first served basis.

Over the last year, More Brewing has been working to convert the former Chevrolet dealership at Automall Drive into the new microbrewery.

Roughly 14,000 square feet of the 25,302-square-foot dealership into a brewpub restaurant, which would have a full kitchen and would be open for lunch and dinner six to seven days a week.

The other 11,000 square feet of the building ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Water’s End Brewery opening new brewery
Water’s End Brewery is opening a new taproom and brewery in the Potomac Festival Shopping Center, near Opitz Blvd and Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge. The second location will more than triple Water’s End’s brewing capacity, the Prince William Living reported on February 14.

“Our tiny brewhouse in Lake Ridge is simply maxed-out and we need to brew more beer to satisfy the epic thirst of our awesome fans,” said Zach Mote, Head Brewer and President of Water’s End Brewery, LLC. “In addition to brewing larger volumes of our most popular beers, the new brewhouse will allow us to brew a variety of lagers, which our friends and neighbors have been asking of us for years.”

Founded in 2016, Water’s End is known for their highly popular Beer Club and friendly service as they are for their constantly rotating tap offerings. Visitors to the family-friendly brewery in Dillingham Square, four miles off the Occoquan exit of I-95, are encouraged to bring their own food or order delivery straight to the taproom.

Beer is available in full pours, half pours and tasting flights, and can also be taken home to share in traditional glass growlers or Crowlers, a 32-oz. can filled from the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Grains of Wrath expanding into Portland
Grains of Wrath, the Camas brewery opened two years ago by acclaimed brewer Mike Hunsaker, is expanding into Portland, taking over part of the former home of Lompoc Brewing in North Portland, The Columbian reported on February 14.

Grains of Wrath will move into the former Sidebar taproom and brewery space at 3901 N. Williams Ave., but the deal does not include Lompoc’s former kitchen or 5th Quadrant restaurant area.

Hunsaker, who started the Clark County brewpub with general manager Brendan Greenen and partners Shawn Parker and Brendan Ford, said Grains of Wrath was looking to expand when Lompoc closed in October after nearly a quarter-century in Portland.

“We had started to look around a little bit, get an idea of costs,” Hunsaker said. “We didn’t expect it to be this easy or quick, but we heard about Lompoc closing. It’s there, and we were like, why not? We took a look.”

Hunsaker said the Grains of Wrath owners didn’t want to open another restaurant, so they declined to lease the entire space. He said he didn’t know who might end up in the former 5th Quadrant and kitchen areas.

Instead, Hunsaker said, Grains of Wrath wanted to expand its production capacity and have a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Allusion Brewing Co. construction delayed by several weeks
Cold weather and a lack of electricity and heat delayed construction of the Allusion Brewing Co. in Vandergrift by several weeks, TribLIVE reported on February 14.

But work is back on track, and the owners plan to open the microbrewery and tap room in the spring.

Co-owners Robert Buchanan and John Bieranoski, both Western Pennsylvania natives, bought the building from the Vandergrift Improvement Project in September. They began renovations immediately, Buchanan said.

The plan was to open early this year, but difficulties supplying the building with electricity, combined with frigid January temperatures, caused construction delays.

“Nobody could work in this building,” Buchanan said. “It was difficult to get my contractors to stay in here for long, and I couldn’t blame them.”

Before electricity was set up, Buchanan had to bring in propane heaters to keep construction moving.

The building is now heated, and things are coming together. Buchanan was staining the floor of the microbrewery this week in preparation for the installation of equipment that has already started to arrive at the shop. A 300-pound wart chiller arrived Wednesday, and he’s expecting a 1,000-pound glycol chiller to arrive early next week. The main barrels for the brewery are expected to arrive late next week.

When they started, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Boomstick Brewing ready to open in downtown Corner Brook
A brewery situated in a soon-to-open boutique hotel in downtown Corner Brook has announced that it will be opening its retail shop later this week, the Canadian Beer News reported on February 17.

Boomstick Brewing has been in the works since the summer of 2017, and has brought in head brewer Mike Wayne who is brewing his “interpretation of the best craft styles from around the world, right in the heart of Western Newfoundland.”

Boomstick will be launching with a core line-up of eight brands including Penstock No. 2 Pale Ale, Half Marathon Hefeweizen, Veto Power Pilsner, Bitter Bird ESB, Wild Bologna IPA, Lone Flamingo Fruity Sour, and The Webber Black Lager.

Boomstick Brewing is located in the main level of the Hew & Draw Hotel at 55 West St. in Corner Brook. Brewery news Vietnam: Ani-drink driving law takes its toll on Sabeco’s beer volumes
Vietnam’s new anti-drunk driving law took its toll on Sabeco’s beer volumes, the Singapore Business Review reported on February 18.

Concerns over drink driving laws in Vietnam dragged ThaiBev’s share price down 11.8% YTD, according to an analyst report by DBS Group Research.

OCBC Investment Research (OIR) echoed a similar sentiment, adding that the fall in share price could be largely attributed to the 9.8% correction after Sabeco announced its full year results in January with 6% YoY fall in revenue due to weaker sales volume.

However, OIR also mentioned that the management is confident in Sabeco's outlook given its strong branding in off premise and rural areas. DBS’ report also stated that Vietnam’s anti-drunk driving law will have a lesser impact due to Sabeco’s skew towards off-trade consumption.

“Given the outbreak of COVID-19, management expects to see larger impact from its Food segment but its contribution to 1QFY20 was minimal at 1.8%. We see any additional stimulus package from Thai government as positive on domestic consumption,” said Chu Peng, analyst at OIR.

Furthermore, RHB is also expecting Sabeco’s earnings growth to decelerate to the mid-to-high digits in FY2020. The report also noted that at the PATMI level, ThaiBev’s beer segment only constituted 2% of ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage, Inc. gets approval to raise P15 bln through bonds
The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the plan of San Miguel Food and Beverage, Inc. (SMFB) to raise ₱15 billion through bonds, CNN Philippines reported on February 19.

The regulator said on February 19 that it has given the green light for the company to issue fixed-rate debt notes, which will mature in five or seven years.

The listed firm revealed its plan to float bonds in November. These papers have been given the highest credit rating by the Philippine Rating Services Corporation, vouching for SMFB's ability to pay its dues.

SMFB, which is the food unit of conglomerate San Miguel Corporation, said the offering would yield around ₱14.8 billion for the company, which it will use to settle maturing loans by March 12.

The bonds can be availed through a minimum ₱50,000 investment plus increments of ₱10,000, and will be listed on the bond trading platform Philippine Dealing & Exchange Corp.

BDO Capital & Investment Corp., BPI Capital Corporation, China Bank Capital Corporation, Philippine Commercial Capital, Inc., PNB Capital and Investment Corporation, RCBC Capital Corporation and SB Capital Investment Corporation have been tapped as joint lead underwriters and bookrunners for the offer, the SEC said.

Brewery news Japan: Kirin Holdings opposes proposal to divest assets outside of beer business
Japan’s Kirin Holdings Co Ltd opposed on Febuary 19 a proposal by an activist shareholder that it divest assets outside its beer business, saying investments in areas such as healthcare were crucial to its business, Reuters reported.

UK-based Independent Franchise Partners (IFP), which owns a 2% stake in Kirin, has called on the company to focus on beer, sell non-core businesses and use proceeds from sales to buy treasury stocks worth 600 billion yen ($5.45 billion).

“The board is strongly opposed to Franchise Partner’s proposal that all non-beer assets be sold,” the company said in a statement.

IFP’s chief executive Hassan Elmasry told reporters in Tokyo on a conference call the company will convince other shareholders to support its proposal for divesting assets outside Kirin’s beer business.

“We regret that Kirin management have not accepted our compromised offer in the constructive spirit in which it was given,” Elmasry said.

“Instead, we aim to convince other shareholders on the merit of the proposal at the annual general meeting (AGM),” he said. Kirin is set to hold its AGM in March.

Given that beer consumption in Japan has more than halved since the 1990s, Kirin has diversified its revenue sources by moving into the pharmaceutical business with affiliate ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev’s South African Breweries to list its black economic empowerment ownership scheme on the JSE
AB InBev’s South African Breweries (SAB) unit plans to list its new R5.4 billion broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) ownership scheme, dubbed SAB Zenzele Kabili, on the JSE on April 15, Moneyweb.co.za reported on February 18.

The move, which will also see black retail investors now being able to secure shares in the beer giant, was announced by Richard Rivett-Carnac – SAB and AB InBev Africa mergers, acquisitions and treasury director – at an event at the JSE in Sandton on February 17.

It comes as the landmark SAB Zenzele B-BBEE scheme is set to wind down in April, having been launched 10 years ago under the old SABMiller stable. SAB, which is now part of the world’s largest brewing group AB InBev, forecasts that the original scheme will have generated almost R14 billion in value for South Africa upon its unwinding.

“SAB Zenzele has disbursed some R4 billion to shareholders since its inception in 2010, with an additional R9.6-billion to be paid out when it winds up in April,” says Rivett-Carnac.

He adds that he is looking forward to the next chapter with SAB Zenzele Kabili.

“We are excited to offer SAB Zenzele shareholders the opportunity to partner and invest in SAB Zenzele Kabili ...More info on site

Brewery news Norway: Sales of non-alcoholic beer reach new record in 2019
10.6 million litres of non-alcoholic beer were sold in Norway in 2019, a new record for the Scandinavian country.

The figure, which applies to country’s the entire beverage industry, was reported by news bureau NTB reported on February 17.

Increasing popularity of non-alcoholic beer is linked to a wider selection and improving quality of products, according to Henrik Lund, marketing manager for alcohol-free beer Ringnes, a major Norwegian brewery.
