India: AB InBev’s Indian unit wants to grow premium portfolio share
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, said it wants its premium portfolio to account for nearly half its total business in India, a market dominated by mass-market rivals, the Economic Times reported on February 20.
The Belgian drink and brewing company, which produces a fourth of the world’s beers, generated a fifth of its sales from premium brands in India when it took over SABMiller four years ago. The share of premium brands has now increased to more than 35%.
“This is my singular mandate – how do we drive the right mix change?” said Kartikeya Sharma, in his first interaction after he was made South Asia president at AB InBev, which sells Budweiser and Corona. “Our strategy is firmly anchored in the premium segment that is growing three-four times the total industry. We are ready to challenge the incumbent leader in the marketplace.”
United Breweries, which owns Kingfisher brand, is by far the leader in the beer segment in India, controlling more than half the market while AB InBev is a distant second with about 20% share. However, AB InBev has more than 65% share in the premium segment, with a portfolio that includes Stella Artois,

USA: Boston Beer reports 25.5% increase in net revenue for 2019
|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported fourth quarter 2019 net revenue of $301.3 million, an increase of $76.1 million or 33.8% from the fourth quarter of 2018, mainly due to an increase in shipments of 31.7%.
Net income for the fourth quarter was $13.8 million, or $1.12 per diluted share, a decrease of $8.0 million or $0.74 per diluted share from the fourth quarter of 2018. This decrease was primarily due to increases in advertising, promotional and selling expenses and lower gross margins that were only partially offset by the increased revenue.
Earnings per diluted share for the 52-week period ended December 28, 2019 were $9.16, an increase of $1.34, or 17.1%, from the comparable 52-week period in 2018. Net revenue for the 52-week period ended December 28, 2019 was $1.25 billion, an increase of $254.2 million, or 25.5%, from the comparable 52-week period in 2018.
The company completed the previously reported Dogfish Head Brewery transaction and began consolidating the Dogfish Head financial results on July 3, 2019. In the fourth quarter ended December 28, 2019, the company incurred non-recurring Dogfish Head transaction-related expenses of $2.1 million. Malaysia: Customs Department cancels one of two tax demands against Heineken Malaysia
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd said on February 20 that the Royal Malaysian Customs Department has cancelled a bill of demand for the payment of sales tax and penalty amounting to RM22.16 million, which was filed against the company in 2015, The Edge Markets reported on February 21.
The claim was for sales tax for the period of July 1, 2012 to Oct 31, 2013, Heineken said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
The brewery said the claim was cancelled with effect from Jan 15, 2020, as underlined in a letter from customs dated Feb 3, 2020. Heineken received the letter on Monday, it said.
The cancelled claim was one of two bills of demand filed by the customs against Heineken on Aug 28, 2015.
The other bill of demand remains unchanged, said Heineken — for payment of excise duties for the period from Aug 28, 2012 until Oct 31, 2013 amounting to RM34.17 million.
“Based on legal and tax advice, there are solid grounds for the company to object the basis of the bill of demand for the payment of excise duties,” said Heineken.
“The company will continue to engage customs to seek an amicable solution to resolve this matter as soon as possible,” it added.

Ireland: Northern Ireland accounts for almost all of Ireland’s barley exports last year
|
A total of 78,438 tonnes of wheat and barley were exported out of Ireland in 2019 according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The majority of this grain travelled to Northern Ireland.
Of the 53,389 tonnes of barley (unmilled) 95% travelled to Northern Ireland. The remaining barley crossed the Irish Sea, while insignificant amounts went to Gibraltar and Lebanon.
In 2018, only 14,857 tonnes left the country, but in that year the total wheat and barley harvest amounted to approximately 1,717,000 tonnes – 456,000 tonnes lower than 2017. In 2018, spring crops were planted late and both spring and winter cereal yields were hit by drought.
It is also worth noting that the majority of the increase came from barley exports.
138,156 tonnes of barley (unmilled) were imported into the Republic of Ireland in 2019.

UK: Scottish malting barley growers should brace themselves for serious competition from England this harvest
|
Scottish malting barley growers have been warned to brace themselves for serious competition from England this harvest, with only quality setting them apart in a flooded market, The Courier reported on February 20.
Sean Sparling, the chairman of the Association of Independent Crop Consultants, told a packed conference of Scottish Agronomy members the ramifications of incessant rainfall and flooded fields in England meant more and more growers were turning to spring barley, and some of that would inevitably turn out to be of malting quality.
“Everyone I speak to who doesn’t have their winter wheat in the ground is saying we’ll put it all into spring barley,” he told the meeting in Perth.
“People need to get the land dried out first, but they are going to have to grow something, they need some income, and if the crop that will go in the ground is spring barley, that’s what they’ll grow.
“There’s going to be a lot, and by accident some of that will go for malting. That’s going to flood the market, that’s what worries me. It’s going to affect your market in Scotland.
“There will be an impact on prices, so this year growing for quality is absolutely crucial. We won’t be

USA: Diageo agrees to pay $5 mln to resolve claims of excess product shipments and misleading financial results
|
Diageo, the British alcoholic beverage company responsible for brands like Guinness and Smirnoff, agreed on February 19 to hand over $5 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to resolve claims that it covered up excess product shipments and misled investors about financial results, Law360 reported.
Diageo PLC’s North American subsidiary pushed distributors to overstock their inventory in an attempt to meet performance targets as the market slumped, the SEC said in an administrative proceeding filed and settled on February 19.
“As a result, distributors in North America held substantial unneeded inventory, which was a known trend or uncertainty: the continued selling over demand was unsustainable because it was likely that distributors would purchase less product in future periods,” the regulator said. “Diageo’s periodic filings did not disclose these known trends and uncertainties to investors.”
In 2014 and 2015, Diageo employees knew the North American arm was overshipping its spirits to meet financial goals, the SEC alleged. The company pressured third-party distributors to purchase unneeded products by waiving a termination clause in their contracts and certain penalty payments it would normally charge distributors for failing to move enough product, the regulator said.
As a result of its failure to
