Brewery news USA: Five people killed at Molson Coors facility in Milwaukee
Five people were killed after a gunman opened fire at the Molson Coors brewing facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, February 26, HuffPost reported.

The gunman, a 51-year-old male, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said a news conference on February 26.

The gunman was an active employee at the company, Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley said in a companywide email.

“This is a tragic day for our city, for our state,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said at the news conference. “Six families are grieving and will be grieving because of this horrific act of this individual.”

Milwaukee police responded to a call of a shooting at the Molson Coors brewing facility at 2:08 p.m. Officers found the gunman dead, then located five other bodies.

All five of the victims were employees of Molson Coors, according to Morales. The names of victims were not being released until families could be notified.

The company sent an email to employees at 2:19 p.m., alerting them to an active shooter in or near the facility’s south packaging building, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and WISN-TV reported.

Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes said that the Molson Coors shooting marked the “11th mass shooting in our ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: HiteJinro stepping up efforts to penetrate overseas markets
HiteJinro Co., a South Korean producer of alcoholic beverages including soju and beer, is stepping up its efforts to penetrate overseas markets based on its strong sales performances in the Korean beer and soju market, BusinessKorea reported on February 26.

The company announced on Feb. 25 that its “Strawberry Soju” will be available at 4,600 Seven Eleven stores in the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

HiteJinro is selling soju products such as “Cham Iseul Soju” and “Grape Iseul Soju” through Southeast Asia's leading distribution channels. HiteJinro surpassed 2 trillion won in sales last year on the back of the popularity of “Terra” beer and “Jinro Is Back” soju and made a turnaround in seven years. Brewery news Nigeria: International Breweries assures shareholders of commitment to creating long-term value
The board and management of International Breweries (IB) Plc have assured shareholders and other stakeholders that the company remains committed to creating long-term value for all stakeholders, The Nation Newspaper reported on February 24.

Directors of International Breweries at the weekend paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in commemoration of the conclusion and listing of the company’s N165 billion rights, reputed as the largest rights issue in Nigerian market.

International Breweries, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), had offered 18.27 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to existing shareholders at N9 per share on the basis of 17 new ordinary shares of 50 kobo each for every eight ordinary shares held as at November 6, 2019. Brewery news Indonesia: Bali Hai Brewery invests in new canning line to meet growing demand for beer
A growing market for beer has led Bali Hai Brewery Indonesia to install a new canning line, accommodating a higher production capacity while securing the quality of their premium beers, fnbnews.com reported on February 26.

Designed and supplied by Sidel, the line runs at up to 33,000 cans per hour for the 330ml format, twice as fast as the former one, and features a very compact layout, thus overcoming the Indonesian brewer’s space constraints.

As the country’s leading independent brewery, Bali Hai Brewery Indonesia has been developing and distributing a distinctive range of beer brands for the national and international markets since 1975.

“Currently our products are sold in more than twenty countries, including Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Korea and New Zealand, as well as different regions of Africa. While capturing the opportunities offered by a consumer demand that is continuously increasing, we are committed to maintaining the consistent taste and quality of our beers,” said Daniel To, technical director, Bali Hai.

With a domestic market share of 3.2 per cent in 2018, the family-owned company is the fourth largest domestic brewery and the first one behind global brands, offering a portfolio that speaks to the consumers’ increasing preference for local as well ...More info on site

Brewery news India: AB InBev launches local wheat beers Veere and Machaa in Bengaluru
Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s biggest brewer that sells Budweiser and Corona, announced on February 28 the launch of its local wheat beers - Veere and Machaa - in Bengaluru, ETRetail.com reported.

In October 2019, AB InBev set up an Indian unit, 7 Rivers Brewing Co, to introduce the two wheat beer variants in Mumbai and Pune.

Kartikeya Sharma, president - South Asia for AB InBev, said, “We are constantly looking at ways to enhance our existing portfolio of beers and the launch of Veere and Machaa is yet another step in that direction. We are delighted with the response from our consumers in Mumbai and Pune. We see a growing trend of specialty wheat beers across the top urban centers in the country.”

Both the variants are brewed at its Aurangabad brewery with homegrown ingredients. The craft style beer by AB Inbev is a locally made Belgian wheat beer made using wheat sourced from various parts of Punjab and Haryana. While Veere has notes of orange and coriander flavours, Machaa is a tropical beer with flavours of banana and cloves sourced from Tamil Nadu. At an ABV of lower than 5%, the variants are being retailed in both can ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Qingdao city government removes president of Tsingtao Brewery
China’s Qingdao city government has removed the president of Tsingtao Brewery from his position, it said without giving a reason, Reuters reported on February 28.

The statement published on the Qingdao government’s website said the decision to remove Fan Wei was made on Feb. 26 and did not say if another position was lined up for him.

Brewery news Taiwan: Taiwan’s microbrewery scene still very small but flourishing
Anyone wandering into the trendy dive bars around Taipei would notice the variety of local craft beers adorning the menus. Visitors and locals alike are drawn to the colorful labels and diverse, regional flavors, The News Lens International reported on February 26.

Taiwan’s microbrewery scene flourished after a substantial series of alcohol deregulations in 2002 ended the government’s monopoly of beer production. The U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service estimated that Taiwan’s craft beer consumption, although small in the overall market share, has an annual growth of 20 percent. Although rising in popularity, Taiwan’s craft beers are still facing fierce competition from commercial brews, imported beers, wine, and spirits like whiskey.

“Craft beer is still very small in Taiwan. The craft beer consumption only makes up around 1 to 3 percent of the total beer market,” said Dr. Shu Wei Huang, urban sociology professor at the National Taiwan University (NTU).

Dr. Huang, who thinks beer tells a story about the society it is produced in, has been teaching workshops on craft beer production at NTU to promote the cultural importance of having local brews in an open society. The beer brewing process serves a multifaceted map of society, connecting its agricultural, transport, processing, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Some consumers avoiding Corona beer amid coronavirus outbreak
Some American beer drinkers are avoiding Corona, the beer, amid the deadly coronavirus outbreak, according to a new survey, the New York Post reported on February 27.

A surprising 38 percent of beer drinkers insisted that they would not, under any circumstances, buy Corona as the deadly virus spreads across the globe, according to the survey conducted by 5W Public Relations.

“There is no question that Corona beer is suffering because of the coronavirus,” Ronn Torossian, founder of 5WPR, said in a statement.

There is no known connection between the beer and the virus — except for the name.

But Torossian explained how important the name was to the product’s branding.

“Could one imagine walking into a bar and saying, ‘Hey, can I have a Corona?’ or ‘Pass me a Corona,’” he said.

In fact, 14 percent of respondents who said they regularly consume Corona beer admitted in the survey they would not order the beverage in public.

There was also some confusion as 16 percent of those surveyed said they were not sure whether the virus is related to Corona beer.

“While the brand has claimed that consumers understand there’s no linkage between the virus and the beer company, this is a disaster for the Corona brand,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors launches Mexican beer Sol Chelada Limon y Sal in the US
Molson Coors Beverage Co. has launched one of its best-selling beers in Mexico in the U.S., CSPDailyNews.com reported on February 24.

Sol Chelada Limon y Sal is a bright lager with natural lime flavor and a pinch of salt, according to the Chicago-based beverage company. The drink is the second spinoff from the Mexican import brand, which grew 42% in 2019 after the release of a Sol Chelada made with Sol beer, tomato, lime and spices, said Katie Feldman, senior marketing manager of North American imports for Molson Coors.

“We’re excited about building the Sol franchise, and we believe the chelada segment can help introduce more drinkers to the brand,” she said.

Sol Limon y Sal has 3.5% ABV and comes packaged in 24-ounce single cans.

Molson Coors is a global brewer with brands such as Coors Light, Coors Banquet, Miller Lite, Molson Canadian, Carling and Blue Moon Belgian White.

Whisky news India: Irish whiskey emerges as the fastest-growing spirit in India
Indians are slowly starting to develop a taste bud for whiskies that go beyond the traditional and affordable IMFL (India made foreign liquor) and the aspirational scotch, the Times of India reported on February 26.

Irish whiskey has emerged as the fastest-growing spirit in India, albeit from a very low base. The sales of these whiskies, dominated in India almost wholly by Pernod Ricard’s Jameson, is expected to rise to 50,000 cases (of 9 litres each) this year from just 5,000 in 2014, data from research firm IWSR show. That is a staggering CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 60%, compared to 12% for scotch and 4% for traditional whiskies.

“The Irish Whiskey category has been growing steadily over the past few years in India like the rest of the world. It reflects the evolving palette amongst the younger drinking audience and their global exposure. People today want to experiment with what they are consuming and try newer brands and products,” said Sachin Mehta, country director of premium spirits company William Grant & Sons.

While scotch is double distilled and made entirely from malted barley, Irish whiskey is triple distilled and is more likely to be made of a combination ...More info on site
