USA: Year-to-date beer category dollar sales are up 6% in off-premise
|
Driven by the continued growth of hard seltzer, year-to-date beer category dollar sales are up 6% at off-premise retailers to start the year, according to market research firm IRI.
The Chicago-based firm — which tracks scans at major retail chains, grocery outlets and convenience stores — said dollar sales of flavored malt beverages (FMBs), non-alcoholic beers, and domestic super premium offerings drove most of the growth during the year-to-date period ending January 26, 2020.
FMBs, including hard seltzers, led the way, growing nearly 60% during the first four weeks of the year. Dollar sales of non-alcoholic offerings trailed closely behind, growing 44.7% on the strength of consumer interest in Dry January. Meanwhile, dollar sales of domestic super premium beers (like Michelob Ultra) grew 11.2%.
Sales of craft beer got off to a rather sluggish start in January, with dollar sales growing just 1.1%. Nevertheless, craft brewers were able to find pockets of growth within the category, including IPAs (+9.2%), golden ales (+8.2%), pale lagers (+14.1%) and pilsners (+11.9%).
Among the top-30 individual craft brands, New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger Liquid Paradise IPA and Sierra Nevada’s Hazy Little Thing IPA experienced the best growth.
Hazy Little Thing, which was introduced at the beginning of 2018, is now

India: Diageo increases stake in United Breweries to 55.9%
|
British spirits giant Diageo has bought shares worth about Rs 352 crore or 0.7 per cent in United Spirits, raising its total stake in India's largest liquor firm to 55.9 per cent, the Economic Times reported on March 2.
The maker of Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff purchased 50.75 lakh shares at Rs 693.25 per share on the National Stock Exchange. "India remains one of the most exciting growth markets in the world for total beverage alcohol. This transaction forms part of Diageo’s long-term strategy of premiumisation within the market," Diageo said in a statement.
Diageo first acquired a controlling stake in USL in 2014 to cash in the world's biggest whiskey market where USL is by far the market leader. USL has more than 100 brands such as McDowell whiskey but has been increasing pushing premium products such as Johnnie Walker and Black & White. Since the British spirits giant acquired USL more than five years ago, premium segment sales has gone up from around 45 per cent-50 per cent in 2014 to over two-thirds to its overall sales now.
Diageo’s overall net sales in India grew 2 per cent but prestige and above segment, where it competes with the French rival Pernod
