India: Carlsberg investigating Indian unit for financial irregularities
|
Carlsberg is investigating its Indian unit for financial irregularities, including incorrect payments, embezzlement and kickbacks from customers. The company said the probe followed accusations made by its local partner, with which it’s “engaged in a very difficult commercial conflict”, the Economic Times reported.
The maker of Tuborg beer has launched an internal audit of all processes related to permits and licences, and has reopened previously closed investigations, regulatory filings show. The audit is being conducted under the supervision of Carlsberg Group’s global integrity committee.
Carlsberg said conflict with the JV partner was at the heart of the matter. It entered India in 2006 by incorporating South Asia Breweries, a JV with Nepal-based Khetan Group.
“We have, for some time, been engaged in a very difficult commercial conflict with our Indian JV partner about the repayment of a $43 million loan he owes us and his wish to sell his stake in the business early at an unreasonably high price,” Steve JH Deng, corporate affairs director, Carlsberg Asia, told ET.
“As the commercial conflict intensifies, our partner and his representatives on the Carlsberg India board have decided to circumvent appropriate governance structures and share a series of wide-ranging accusations at all possible opportunities, including in

Ireland & UK: Budweiser moving Irish production from Dublin home of Guinness to the UK
|
Budweiser is moving Irish production from the Dublin home of Guinness to the UK as part of a distribution deal with Bulmers cider maker C&C, Independent.ie reported on March 5.
C&C said it was acquiring rights to market the Budweiser Brewing Group's two key assets in Ireland - Budweiser and Bud Light - from Guinness parent Diageo. Terms were not disclosed but the deal becomes effective on July 1.
At that time C&C will begin distributing Bud and Bud Light across Ireland. Production of the brands will cease at St James's Gate brewery in Dublin.
Budweiser said production for the Irish market will be transferred to two breweries in Magor, south Wales, and Samlesbury, Lancashire, in England. Both facilities are operated by Bud's parent, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and already brew Bud and Bud Light for the British market.
C&C said its facility in Clonmel, Co Tipperary - where it chiefly makes Bulmers cider - would be responsible for kegging Bud imported from the UK.
Budweiser said most, if not all, would come from the Welsh brewery.
The jobs impact at Diageo and C&C was not immediately clear.
C&C said the Clonmel kegging activity may require no extra staffing.
Diageo said it did not anticipate job losses in Dublin, as

UK: BBPA calling for 2% cut in duty on beer in next week's Budget
|
The possibility of an automatic rise in alcohol duty in next week’s Budget has sparked warnings over the impact of price increases from industry trade bodies in the UK, bighospitality.co.uk reported on March 4.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak will set out the Government's spending plans in his first Budget on 11 March.
Under current policy all alcohol duties are set to rise in line with RPI Inflation, currently forecast at 2.8%.
This would add approximately 6p to the cost of a 750ml bottle of still wine and 8p to the cost of 750ml bottles of sparkling or fortified wines, according to the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA).
A 70cl bottle of 37.5% vodka would rise 21p, while a 70cl bottle of 40% gin would rise 23p.
It is not clear when any duty changes could come in to force, but the WSTA warns it could be immediate.
Tax on beer, cider and spirits was frozen in 2019 following Philip Hammond’s final 2018 Budget.
Wine, which continued to rise in line with inflation, has seen a 12% increase in duty since 2014.
Restaurateurs say this had led to a fall in wine sales, and in January a group including Corbin & King CEO Jeremy King

New Zealand & China: New Zealand craft brewery to ship second container to China despite ongoing coronavirus concerns
|
A Christchurch, New Zealand craft beer company is getting ready to ship its second container of beer to China despite ongoing concerns over the coronavirus, Stuff.co.nz reported on March 5.
Alisdair Cassels, director of Cassels Brewery Company, said the company saw a future in the Chinese craft beer market even amid the current climate of uncertainty.
"We asked our agent over there if we should keep sending the beer or redirect it to England but he said yes, that this would be just a two month thing," Cassels said.
"Life will keep moving forward."
The beer, which was awarded the 2019 World Beer Awards World's Best Milk Stout, costs about 10 times the price of normal beer in China and was targeted at the higher end of the market, Cassels said.
"Globally, the craft beer makes up around 10 per cent of the market, in China it's just 1 per cent," Cassels said.
"There is huge potential for growth."
It took the company 18 months to crack into the Chinese market and the first container was shipped last month.
A third container of beer would leave for China at the end of March.
Each 40-foot container had NZ$100,000 worth of beer, marking a significant investment for the company,
