Hops news USA, PA: Growing craft beer sector expected to drive new hop production in Pennsylvania
The 350-plus craft breweries in Pennsylvania could use the hops from at least 1,000 acres of hop production in the state, while Pennsylvania farmers have just a bit more than 100 acres in the slanted poles used to grow the hop vines, pennlive.com reported.

“The number of hop farms in a state is related to the number of craft breweries,” explained Claudia Schmidt, assistant professor of agricultural economics. Her study “suggests that in areas where hop production is possible and not cost-prohibitive, breweries are expanding markets for farmers and providing an opportunity to diversify farm income.”

Hops are a key ingredient in beer production, providing aroma and bittering characteristics.

In the late 1800s New York was producing most of the U.S. hops, while there were significant hop yards – the industry name for the areas where hops are grown – in Pennsylvania. Increasing diseases and insect pest sent the eastern industry into decline. Prohibition in 1920 killed any remaining demand for hops in the east, where shipping to international markets was not as feasible.

From the mid-1900s to earlier this century, U.S. hop production in the U.S. occurred almost entirely in the Pacific Northwest states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Brewery news USA, SC: Local Motive Brewing Company moving to a new location
A brewery in downtown Florence is set to move to a new location, WMBF reported on March 5.

Billy McBride, owner of Local Motive Brewing Company, said the brewery will move from its downtown location on North Dargan Street to a 1,500-square-foot empty metal building on West Palmetto Street near Beltline Drive.

According to McBride, the brewery will now be near the city’s new soccer complex and area trails and parks. Managers wanted the business to be in a family-friendly environment.

“We will always support downtown Florence,” McBride said. “We are going back to our roots as garage brewers.”

The owner added he is optimistic the new location will be open and running by May, but could take longer as the county council goes through the permitting process.

McBride said staff began started moving out of the downtown location on Wednesday. All the brewing equipment is out.

Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela said the brewery was a part of the city’s downtown Crest Project. The owners received a $180,000 package to get the business up and running, he added.

Wukela said he hates to see Local Motive leave downtown Florence, but is excited the business is relocating to an area that offers a number of outdoor opportunities.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Vegandale Brewery closes in Toronto, Duggans Brewery moving back into location
A Toronto brewpub that opened in July 2018 with the motto “Morality On Tap” and an all-vegan beer and food line-up has closed, and will be replaced by the business that occupied the space previously, the Canadian Beer News reported.

Vegandale Brewery – which shared the name that ownership group The 5700 is using to refer to several vegan businesses it operates in the city’s Parkdale neighbourhood – was situated at 1346 Queen Street West, an address it had taken over from Duggan’s Brewery.

Duggan’s remained open as a brewery and bar/music venue in the basement of the building, with brewmaster Michael Duggan producing beers for Vegandale. The ground level spot also offered a menu of comfort food from Los Angeles vegan restaurant chain Doomie’s, as well as a vegan ice cream parlour called Not Your Mother.

With Vegandale Brewery now closed, Duggan’s has regained possession of the main floor restaurant, which will be reopening soon with a new food menu and an expanded retail beer store. In the meantime, the basement location of Duggan’s remains open on Wednesday to Saturday evenings.

Brewery news India: Carlsberg investigating Indian unit for financial irregularities
Carlsberg is investigating its Indian unit for financial irregularities, including incorrect payments, embezzlement and kickbacks from customers. The company said the probe followed accusations made by its local partner, with which it’s “engaged in a very difficult commercial conflict”, the Economic Times reported.

The maker of Tuborg beer has launched an internal audit of all processes related to permits and licences, and has reopened previously closed investigations, regulatory filings show. The audit is being conducted under the supervision of Carlsberg Group’s global integrity committee.

Carlsberg said conflict with the JV partner was at the heart of the matter. It entered India in 2006 by incorporating South Asia Breweries, a JV with Nepal-based Khetan Group.

“We have, for some time, been engaged in a very difficult commercial conflict with our Indian JV partner about the repayment of a $43 million loan he owes us and his wish to sell his stake in the business early at an unreasonably high price,” Steve JH Deng, corporate affairs director, Carlsberg Asia, told ET.

“As the commercial conflict intensifies, our partner and his representatives on the Carlsberg India board have decided to circumvent appropriate governance structures and share a series of wide-ranging accusations at all possible opportunities, including in ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland & UK: Budweiser moving Irish production from Dublin home of Guinness to the UK
Budweiser is moving Irish production from the Dublin home of Guinness to the UK as part of a distribution deal with Bulmers cider maker C&C, Independent.ie reported on March 5.

C&C said it was acquiring rights to market the Budweiser Brewing Group's two key assets in Ireland - Budweiser and Bud Light - from Guinness parent Diageo. Terms were not disclosed but the deal becomes effective on July 1.

At that time C&C will begin distributing Bud and Bud Light across Ireland. Production of the brands will cease at St James's Gate brewery in Dublin.

Budweiser said production for the Irish market will be transferred to two breweries in Magor, south Wales, and Samlesbury, Lancashire, in England. Both facilities are operated by Bud's parent, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and already brew Bud and Bud Light for the British market.

C&C said its facility in Clonmel, Co Tipperary - where it chiefly makes Bulmers cider - would be responsible for kegging Bud imported from the UK.

Budweiser said most, if not all, would come from the Welsh brewery.

The jobs impact at Diageo and C&C was not immediately clear.

C&C said the Clonmel kegging activity may require no extra staffing.

Diageo said it did not anticipate job losses in Dublin, as ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: BBPA calling for 2% cut in duty on beer in next week's Budget
The possibility of an automatic rise in alcohol duty in next week’s Budget has sparked warnings over the impact of price increases from industry trade bodies in the UK, bighospitality.co.uk reported on March 4.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will set out the Government's spending plans in his first Budget on 11 March.

Under current policy all alcohol duties are set to rise in line with RPI Inflation, currently forecast at 2.8%.

This would add approximately 6p to the cost of a 750ml bottle of still wine and 8p to the cost of 750ml bottles of sparkling or fortified wines, according to the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA).

A 70cl bottle of 37.5% vodka would rise 21p, while a 70cl bottle of 40% gin would rise 23p.

It is not clear when any duty changes could come in to force, but the WSTA warns it could be immediate.

Tax on beer, cider and spirits was frozen in 2019 following Philip Hammond’s final 2018 Budget.

Wine, which continued to rise in line with inflation, has seen a 12% increase in duty since 2014.

Restaurateurs say this had led to a fall in wine sales, and in January a group including Corbin & King CEO Jeremy King ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand & China: New Zealand craft brewery to ship second container to China despite ongoing coronavirus concerns
A Christchurch, New Zealand craft beer company is getting ready to ship its second container of beer to China despite ongoing concerns over the coronavirus, Stuff.co.nz reported on March 5.

Alisdair Cassels, director of Cassels Brewery Company, said the company saw a future in the Chinese craft beer market even amid the current climate of uncertainty.

"We asked our agent over there if we should keep sending the beer or redirect it to England but he said yes, that this would be just a two month thing," Cassels said.

"Life will keep moving forward."

The beer, which was awarded the 2019 World Beer Awards World's Best Milk Stout, costs about 10 times the price of normal beer in China and was targeted at the higher end of the market, Cassels said.

"Globally, the craft beer makes up around 10 per cent of the market, in China it's just 1 per cent," Cassels said.

"There is huge potential for growth."

It took the company 18 months to crack into the Chinese market and the first container was shipped last month.

A third container of beer would leave for China at the end of March.

Each 40-foot container had NZ$100,000 worth of beer, marking a significant investment for the company, ...More info on site
