USA: Craft Brewers Conference cancelled due to coronavirus spread
|
After much speculation, the 2020 Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America has officially been canceled due to concerns over the spread of a novel coronavirus disease, called COVID-19, Forbes reported on March 12.
The annual event, which brings together roughly 13,000 beer industry professionals from across the world and is hosted by the U.S. Brewers Association, was scheduled to take place in San Antonio, Texas from April 19-22.
“Developments over the past 24 hours have made hosting this year’s conference infeasible,” the trade group announced via its website.
The decision to forgo the convention — which was first reported by beer industry trade publication Brewbound — came one day after the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) called off its Legislative Conference, which was scheduled to kick off in Washington D.C. at the end of the month.
“Developments over the past several days, including exposure and self-quarantine of members of Congress, meeting cancellations and travel restrictions, flight reductions and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other health agencies, have made hosting this year’s conference a significant challenge,” NBWA chief executive Craig Purser wrote in a note to members yesterday.

USA, NY: Big Ditch Brewing Co. to open second location in Cheektowaga
|
Big Ditch Brewing Co. plans to open a second location in Cheektowaga at the site of the former Clarion Hotel by late next year, the Buffalo News reported on March 12.
The craft brewing company, which has its flagship site at 55 E. Huron St. in downtown Buffalo, said on March 12 it plans to open a 105,000-square-foot facility at 6700 Transit Road, just north of the Depew/Lockport Thruway exit.
The new facility will have more than three times the brewing capacity of Big Ditch's downtown site – 50,000 barrels annually, compared with 15,000 barrels a year downtown – and will be one of the biggest craft brewing locations in the region. About half of the new facility will be for a taproom and dining area, with the other half devoted to offices and brewing facilities.
“Demand for our beer continues to grow and more opportunities exist for expanded sales and distribution," said Matt Kahn, a Big Ditch co-founder. "That’s why this site expansion is so timely and necessary, as it will allow us to really ramp-up production.”

USA, OH: Planted Flag Brewing preparing for March 16 opening
|
Aaron Wirtz discovered an eye-opening fact researching his family history as he prepared to open Planted Flag Brewing, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on March 12.
He’s not the first Ohio brewer in the family.
Wirtz found that his great-great-grandfather August Uehlein, a German immigrant, worked at Oppmann Brewing in Cleveland in the 1880s and later owned the Lezius and Uehlein, and Diebolt & Uehlein breweries. Not to mention that another side of the family married into the Schlitz empire and ran that brewery.
Considering Wirtz and his wife Karen are building their brewpub around family and locally sourced ingredients, he’s proud to resurrect the family’s grand brewing tradition in Northeast Ohio.
Planted Flag will open Monday (March 16) at 3594 Pearl Road. The brewery features a 10-barrel brewing system, and is nestled along Medina County Park District property just a few miles north of the Medina Public Square.
The brewpub, located in a standalone building with light green metal roofing, isn’t big at just over 3,000 square feet. It can seat about 60 people at the small bar and tables inside, where former tree sap metal buckets hang from the ceiling as offbeat lighting and the seating is green.

USA, CO: Left Hand Brewing Co. preparing to open second location outside of Longmont
|
Left Hand Brewing Co., one of the original pioneers in craft brewing and famous for its Nitro series, plans to open its second location outside of Longmont in the heart of Denver’s booming Curtis Park neighborhood at 2403 Champa Street. Construction and redesign will be starting this month with plans to open later this summer, Brewbound reported on March 12.
The 12,000 square foot location will feature a seven-barrel pilot brewery, 50 tap handles, full food menu, live music, a large outdoor patio, ample parking, and private event space for up to 300 people. Of the 50 taps, the majority will feature Left Hand’s current Nitro, year-round and seasonal offerings as well as pilot beers made on site that will be exclusively available at Left Hand Curtis Park. Left Hand’s non-beer beverages including hard kombucha, hard seltzer, and Present CBD-Infused Sparkling Water round out the lineup.

USA, FL: Coastal County Brewing Co. launching in Pensacola on March 13
|
A newly opened destination brewery unlike anything else in north Pensacola invites you to spend your day there, the Pensacola News Journal reported on March 13.
Coastal County Brewing Co. opens Friday, March 13 at 3041 E. Olive Road with a full craft beer and food menu, a 92-seat indoor tap room and a two-acre outdoor beer garden and entertainment complex.
"I wanted it to be a place that has everything anyone could want from a brewery," Coastal County owner Fred Thibodeaux said Thursday, before the brewery's special "neighbors night" pre-opening party. "Tons of variety, a beer garden, a dog park, plenty of parking. Everything."
Most recently, Thibodeaux was a production manager at Wicked Barley Brewing Co. in Jacksonville. He mastered his craft there and also as an apprentice in Arizona and North Carolina.
Thibodeaux, a self-proclaimed "big nerd" when it comes to the brewery and brewpub industry, has trained more than a few brewers along the way. And now, he's getting to embark on his own venture and execute his own vision in Pensacola, the town where he grew up.

Mighty Axe Hops, Minnesota’s largest hop farm and processor, is up for sale as the result of a storm that devastated the hop farm’s 2019 crop, The Growler reported on March 9.
Late in the evening on Labor Day in 2019, roughly halfway through their harvest season, Mighty Axe’s hopyard in Foley, Minnesota, was hit by 55-mph straight-line winds that snapped hundreds of support poles and grounded 12 acres of hops. The winds were particularly damaging to the farm’s highest-yielding hops, whose thick and heavy cones were just days away from harvest. Acting quickly with the help of a team of volunteers, Mighty Axe was able to salvage a small portion of their downed crop, but as CEO Eric Sannerud ran the numbers in the wake of the storm, a bleaker picture started to emerge. Mighty Axe had lost hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of their crop, creating a shortfall in revenue so severe that it will prevent them from growing hops in 2020 without additional funding.

USA, CA: Wolf House Brewery’s opening delayed to at least summer

Reached by phone in the middle of brewing his new Dutch Courage ale, Dwayne Moran expressed frustration about how long it is taking to get permission to get his Wolf House Brewery up and running in Glen Ellen, the Sonoma Index-Tribune reported on March 10.
He and his wife Elise had hoped to be open this spring but now feel that even summer 2020 is optimistic.
However, the couple launched their first beer labels at San Francisco Beer Week last month. They had hoped to actually brew their beer on site in Glen Ellen but quickly learned that would be impossible without significant changes to their Jack London Village space. They purchased an existing brewery in Cloverdale in 2019 so that their beer production can begin.
They expect their Dutch Courage and Burning Daylight labels – both named after Jack London short stories – to be available at Sonoma Valley restaurants and bars in the weeks ahead. Their master brewer, Kevin Lovett, is in charge of the brewing process, and busy working on new labels and releases.

USA, WA: Rogue Brewing announces closing of Issaquah brewpub

As growth in the craft beer segment has slowed over the past couple of years, breweries have looked at a number of solutions in effort to continue the double-digit growth that they had become accustomed to through the early 2000s, KPCnews.com reported on March 12.
One solution that seemed to work for many breweries was to create satellite breweries, tap rooms and restaurants outside of their original location, state and even country. However, a recent wave of tap rooms and bar closings by some of the biggest and oldest craft brewers seem to indicate that this trend is ending.
One of the oldest craft breweries, Rogue Brewing of Newport, Oregon, has announced the closing of their brewpub in Issaquah, Washington (about 310 miles northeast of Rogue’s headquarters). This brewpub had been in operation since 2001. Rogue continues to operate eight total locations, all within the state of Oregon. Rogue president Dharma Tamm wrote in a statement released on Facebook, “This was a very difficult decision, but unfortunately rising costs have made it apparent that it is our best option to close the Issaquah Brewhouse in order to better focus on our other public houses and production.”

UK: Planned increase in duty on beer and spirits scrapped in 2020 Budget
|
UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has offered a cocktail of measures to boost the spirits of pubs and drinkers affected by coronavirus and economic uncertainty, BBC reported on March 11.
The chancellor scrapped a planned increase in duty on beer and spirits, while tax on all other kinds of alcoholic drinks will also be frozen.
The small pub business rates discount will increase from £1,000 to £5,000.
But the measures are a "double penalty'" for those worst-affected by alcohol harm, charities say.
The 2020 Budget has offered an unexpected windfall for the alcohol industry, including tax breaks and cash giveaways.
The business rate discount for small pubs - those with a rateable value of less than £100,000 - will be increased from £1,000 to £5,000, partly because of the "possible impact of coronavirus".
Planned tax rises on beer and spirits were also scrapped, as part of a freezing on duty across all alcoholic drinks. This Budget marks only the second time that has happened in 20 years, the chancellor said.
The British Beer and Pub Association described it as "a great Budget for pubs, pub-goers and Britain's world-class brewing industry".
The association says the chancellor's measures will save pub-goers £80m and safeguard 2,000 jobs.

France: Farmers make little progress in spring barley sowing because of heavy rains
|
French farmers again made little progress in spring barley sowing last week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed, as heavy rain continued to drench fields in the European Union's biggest grain producer, Successful Farming reported on March 13.
Spring barley sowing was 34% complete by Monday, March 9, up only marginally from 33% a week earlier and 32% two weeks ago, FranceAgriMer's cereal crop data showed.
The sowing progress in the latest week was well below the 96% seen in the same week last year and also behind the average pace of the past five years.
Drilling of spring barley, the first major cereal crop to be sown in France at the end of winter, got off to a brisk start in late January, helped by unseasonably mild temperatures.
Frequent showers in February, with parts of northern France seeing record rainfall for the month, then waterlogged some fields that were still soggy after torrential rain in autumn.
The rain prompted France's meteorological office to issue flood warnings for some river zones this week while in Paris the Seine spilled onto quaysides.

UK: Scotch Whisky Association welcomes duty freeze in new budget
|
The Scotch Whisky Association has welcomed the continued freeze on spirits announced in Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Budget on March 11, the Scottish Field reported.
They were also pleased by the additional support for the industry through a green energy fund, while the industry continues to face a 25% tariff imposed on single malt by the US government under a transatlantic trade dispute between aircraft manufacturers.
The duty rate on spirits remains £28.74 per litre of pure alcohol, meaning that of the £14.61 average price of a bottle of Scotch Whisky, £10.49 is collected in taxation through duty and VAT. The tax burden on Scotch whisky remains 72%.
A 25% tariff on exports of single malt Scotch whisky and liqueurs to the United States has been in place since October 2019, and the SWA had called on the Chancellor to cut duty on Scotch whisky to help support the industry during a challenging time.
As well as freezing duty, the Chancellor announced a £10 mln R&D fund to help the industry achieve its net-zero ambitions and additional support to promote Scotland’s food and drink exports, including Scotch whisky.
