Belgium: Brewers planning to suspend production to help against spread of Covid-19
|
Some of Belgium’s major brewers are planning to suspend production as long as the measures against the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) continue, De Tijd reports.
The reason is the loss of income as a result of the closure of bars and restaurants, which leaves brewers with retail stores as their only outlet for product. Retail in shops is not the biggest market for many brewers, other than the very biggest brands like Jupiler and Maes.
“Our warehouses are overflowing,” said Alain De Laet, CEO of Huyghe brewery in Malle in East Flanders, which makes Delirium Tremens.
Supermarkets, which remain open, have seen some panic-buying of beer as well as hygiene articles.
“There we have seen an increase in sales of 70%” said Edwin Dedoncker, chief executive of St Feuillien of Le Rœulx in Hainaut province. That does not, however, make up for lost horeca sales.
“It’s utopic to think that our total turnover could remain stable this year, never mind growing,” he said.
Frank Boon in Lembeek in Flemish Brabant is one of the largest brewers of lambic-based beers like geuze and kriek. He estimates his sales will be 20% down in March, and 80% down in April.

USA: Beer industry calls for $5 billion in federal assistance
|
The Beer Institute and other alcohol beverage producers' groups wrote to congressional leadership to ask for a stabilization fund of $5 billion to provide cash advances to their businesses in order to sustain them through the coronavirus pandemic, The Hill reported on March 19.
“Absent relief, a large number of distilleries, breweries, wineries, and cideries may be forced to permanently close their doors as a result of COVID-19. Producers across the country have begun already shutting down and suspending production as tourism precipitously declines, bars and restaurants close, and Americans stay home to prevent the further spread of COVID-19,” the groups wrote in a letter sent on March 18.
They asked that Congress consider expanding unemployment insurance, suspending payroll taxes, providing federal excise tax relief and no- and low-interest loan assistance and creating the $5 billion stabilization fund so businesses have enough receivables to pay their employees and to borrow against.
The alcoholic beverage sector overall supports over 5.4 million jobs and generated more than $562 billion in economic activity in 2018, according to the letter. The beer industry specifically supports more than 2.1 million jobs and contributes over $328 billion annually.

USA: Survey by Brewers Association shows 99% of craft brewers feeling economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic
|
A survey by the Brewers Association takes a sobering look at how the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting craft breweries, many of which are seeing a curb in production or, worse still, have had to close their dining and tap rooms to customers until further notice — that's the situation in Ohio, the Crain’s Cleveland Business reported on March 20.
The BA survey is ongoing. All craft breweries are welcome to take part.
So far, just 1% of the 619 breweries that completed the survey said their businesses have not been impacted by the pandemic. Of all respondents, 90% said they're feeling impacts to onsite sales, 59% said they feel it on distributor orders, and 89% said they've had to cancel events.
Some of this is to be expected. But the numbers help bring context to the situation.
So far, more than 95% of all respondents say they anticipate year-over-year sales to be down over the next month, 64% have reported scaled back production and nearly 58% are anticipating layoffs (only 9.5% of respondents specifically said they anticipate no layoffs).

India: United Breweries appoints new CEO and managing director from August this year
|
United Breweries, India’s biggest brewer that sells Kingfisher, has appointed Rishi Pardal as the new CEO and managing director from August this year. Pardal will succeed Shekhar Ramamurthy (58) who is due to retire from the company this July, stated a stock exchange filing, the Economic Times reported on March 18.
Pardal will join UB on June 12 in preparation for taking charge from Ramamurthy and familiarise with the business. He will hold office as MD for a period of five years which will be extendable based on approval of the shareholders thereafter.
Pardal’s last stint was as vice president and general manager at Avery Dennison Corporation, a Fortune 500 Company based out of Hong Kong. Prior to this role, he was the MD of Marico Bangladesh, following a 14-year career in sales and management roles with Hindustan Unilever. Pardal is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi.
Shekhar Ramamurthy, who will retire on July 31, was with the UB Group for 31 years, of which, the last five years spent as its CEO and MD.

EU: Brewers and distillers using production facilities to make hand sanitizer

Brewers and distillers across Europe are using their production facilities to make hand sanitizer to help fight the coronavirus outbreak, CNN reported on March 18.
BrewDog, Leith Gin, Verdant Spirits and Pernod Ricard are all getting involved in efforts to ramp up production of hand sanitizer, which has become scarce in many countries due to a massive spike in demand.
The announcements follow a raft of similar efforts from some distilleries in the United States.
BrewDog announced it would start making hand sanitizer at its brewery in Scotland on Twitter on March 18.
"We are determined to do everything we can to try and help as many people as possible stay safe. It's time to keep it clean," tweeted the company.
Another Scottish company, Leith Gin, made its own announcement on March 17.
"We have suspended spirit production and are making high strength hand sanitiser for those in need in our local community," tweeted the company.
The distillery also appealed for donations of small plastic bottles to use as packaging.
Verdant Spirits, a distillery based in Dundee, Scotland joined in the efforts on March 17, tweeting an appeal for donations.

World: Carlsberg CEO’s salary decreases in 2019
|
Cees ‘t Hart, the chief executive of Danish brewing giant Carlsberg, took home a smaller salary last year after his share-based payments were cut back, The Drinks Business reported on March 19.
Carlsberg’s supervisory board approved the new annual report on March 17, which outlined the brewer’s sales performance across all markets, its sustainability targets for the years ahead, and executive’s salaries.
Operating profit in increased organically by 10.7% last year, which the brewer said was thanks to growth in Asia and Western Europe, which “more than offset the decline in Eastern Europe.”
Revenues in Asia grew organically by 12.3% in the year to 31 December, which the CEO said was a result of a 6% increase in volumes and an increase in sales of more expensive brands.
But Hart took home DKK 2.7 million less last year despite an overall increase in annual salary.
Hart’s fixed salary increased from DKK 12.3 million in 2018 to DKK 12.6 million last year, but was given a smaller cash bonus, share-based payments and remuneration, according to the report.
Carlsberg said the “potential maximum bonus for the CEO and CFO was 100% of fixed salary, with a bonus equal to 60% of fixed salary payable for on-target performance.”

Vietnam: Heineken launches its non-alcoholic Heineken® 0.0 lager in Vietnam
|
Heineken presented its latest innovation in Vietnam, Heineken® 0.0, a non-alcoholic lager brewed with a unique recipe for a distinct balanced taste – and only 69 calories per 330ml bottle, the Viet Nam News reported.
First launched in the Netherlands in 2017, Heineken® 0.0 is now available in 57 markets around the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. Vietnam will be the 58th market to launch Heineken® 0.0, in 330ml bottles and cans. The brand’s iconic green label has been turned blue – the color associated with the non-alcoholic category.
Heineken’s® Master Brewers created the new zero-alcohol beer using only natural ingredients, resulting in a beer brewed for beer lovers, by beer lovers. Willem van Waesberghe, Global Craft and Brew Master at Heineken, said, “Removing alcohol from regular 5% Heineken® would have been easy, but it wouldn’t deliver the best tasting non-alcoholic beer. Heineken® 0.0 is brewed from scratch and has a perfectly balanced taste with refreshing fruity notes and soft malty body.”

Canada: Barley supply up 17% in 2019-20
|
For 2019-20, total supply of barley in Canada increased by 17% from 2018-19 to 11.285 mln tonnes due to higher production and despite historically low carry-in stocks, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its March report.
Domestic use is expected to increase significantly, due to higher feed use, the analysts said.
Exports are expected to increase slightly (to 3.15 mln tonnes) due to higher exports of barley products.
Carry-out stocks are forecast to rise sharply from last year (to 1.7 mln tonnes) due to higher supply.
The average price of feed barley is expected to be lower than 2018-19, due to increased supply in Canada, the US and around the world.
In the US, barley production increased by 12%, however total supply increased by only 6%, due to a decline in carry-in stocks according to the USDA. Imports are expected to increase by more than half of the level of last year. Total use is expected to increase by 2% and carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 12%. The average farm price of barley in the US is expected to rise by US$0.03/bushel (bu) to US$4.65/bu from last year.

Japan: Kirin announces release of two new domestic whisky brands
|
Kirin Brewery Co. on March 17 announced the release of two new domestic whisky brands, The Japan Times reported.
The Fuji and Riku whiskies will be the first additions to the Kirin Holdings Co. unit’s lineup of the liquor in some 15 years.
The move follows widespread supply shortages of domestic whisky due to the popularity of highballs, or whisky mixed with soda. Sales of aged whiskies are being suspended as a result of the spike in demand.
Kirin hopes the new brands will help expand its market share in Japan and abroad.
Fuji uses a whisky from a distillery in Shizuoka Prefecture and has a rich, sweet aroma. The product was named after Mount Fuji, which straddles Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, in anticipation of the liquor being exported to the West.
Fuji is targeted at restaurants, with a price tag of around ¥6,000 per 700-milliliter bottle. The whisky will go on sale on April 21.
The Riku whisky blends whiskies from overseas distilleries and lends itself to being prepared in a variety of ways, including mixed with water. It will go on sale May 19 at a price of around ¥1,500 per 500-milliliter bottle.
