Brewery news USA: Molson Coors withdraws financial outlook for 2020, announces initiatives aimed at protecting and supporting employees amid Covid-19 crisis
Molson Coors Beverage Company on March 27 announced several initiatives aimed at protecting and supporting employees – including requiring employees to work from home if they are able, creating a new voluntary paid leave program, thank you pay incentive and paid leave policy, and implementing additional measures to protect its employees who are still working on site.

The company is also announcing that it is withdrawing, in its entirety, its financial outlook for 2020 and beyond that was previously provided on February 12, 2020 due to uncertainty regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Molson Coors president and chief executive officer Gavin Hattersley said, "These are challenging times for the world and our company, and our priority is to ensure the safety of our people and the stability of our business. I’m proud of how resilient our people have been during this time, including the people who brew, package and ship our quality beers and keep our breweries and business running. I can’t thank them enough. I am also proud of how our teams are stepping up to take care of our communities who need our help more than ever."

Over the past weeks the company rolled out additional actions to help ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Constellation Brands ready to hold talks with President on vote against its brewery in Mexicali
A day after the federal government announced that it would halt Constellation Brands’ US $1.4-billion Mexicali brewery, the United States beverage company said on March 24 that it is ready to hold talks with President López Obrador, the Mexico News Daily reported.

The company said in a statement that it had “listened carefully” to the statements of Deputy Interior Minister Diana Álvarez – who announced on March 23 that 76.1% of people who voted in a public consultation on the brewery last weekend opposed it – and López Obrador “with respect to our project in Mexicali, Baja California.”

“We’ve taken note of their messages and we are ready to enter into the necessary talks with President López Obrador and his cabinet to work closely on a plan of action that considers the large current and future challenges that Mexico faces in an economic and social sense,” Constellation said.

In a separate statement posted to the company’s website, Constellation President and CEO Bill Newlands said that the company “will continue working with local authorities, government officials and members of the community on next steps related to our brewery construction project in Mexicali and options elsewhere in Mexico.”

“In the meantime, it’s important to note that ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors workers at St. John’s brewery ramping up production but know it could end any day
Employees at the Molson Coors brewery in St. John's, Newfoundland are ramping up at a time when everyone else is ramping down, but they know it could end any day, CBC reported on March 25.

Greg Pretty, a union rep for the brewery workers, said they have concerns about safety but appreciate the extra steps being taken while they prepare inventory for what would normally be the Victoria Day weekend and start of summer.

The increase in production has nothing to do with people staying home from work across the province.

"Sunshine drives beer. I'm not really sure a pandemic does," Pretty said.

The work is split into two shifts, totalling 55 workers. The building is laid out in a way that people are not working side-by-side, Pretty said, so spreading through person-to-person contact is not a big concern, and the surfaces are sanitized every hour to try to avoid the spread of COVID-19 if it does make its way into the facility.

Pretty said the situation is being assessed every day, and they know it all could come to an end at any moment.

"People are concerned whether or not they'll have a job in the very near future but right now production continues at ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Jackknife Brewing launches in Kelowna
After months of hard work, there aren’t many better feelings than opening your business to the public for the first time.

In Kelowna, a number of brewery owners have been able to enjoy that feeling over the last two or three years, as the craft brewery scene has blown up in the Central Okanagan.

Unfortunately, the city’s latest brewery is opening at a time where they won’t be able to have your typical grand opening celebration and flood of traffic over its first few days, KelownaNow reported on March 24.

Jackknife Brewing announced on social media on March 23 that they’ve “finally reached the finish line! Beer is being canned and the oven is hot!”

“We’ve somehow managed to open in the exact worst time for any new business, but we’re going to power through!”

Starting on Wednesday, March 2 5Jackknife will be serving takeout pizza from noon until 7 pm from five days a week, as they’ll be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The brewery will offer a cheese pizza, a pair of meat pizzas and a vegetarian pizza that can also be made with vegan cheese as well.

You won’t have to wait long to try Jackknife beer either, as the brewery says it’ll be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: 902 Brewing Company produces first batch of beer in Jersey City
While it’s undeniably a tough environment for small businesses right now, a few Jersey boys who have long dreamt of opening their own brewery shared some good news that’s been years in the making over this past weekend, the Jersey Digs reported on March 24.

Back in June 2018, Jersey Digs broke the news about 902 Brewing Company’s plans to open a formal brewery and tap room in Jersey City’s Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood. The 6,000-square foot facility at 101 Pacific Avenue was a long time coming for Colby Janisch, Tucker Littleton, Andrew Brown, and Don Vogt, who co-founded the brewery back in 2012.

The company is named for the Washington Street building in Hoboken where Janisch and Littleton honed on their brewing craft. They’ve been working their hoppy magic out of New Jersey Beer Company’s North Bergen facility since 2016 and their 6,000 square foot space in Jersey City will potentially allow the company to brew over 5,000 barrels of beer annually, plus give them a spot to open a tap room.

902 Brewing Company officially broke in their Pacific Avenue space last Friday, March 20, announcing on their Instagram that the first batch of beer was fermenting. The brewery obtained what’s called a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Hanging Hills Brewing Company announces permanent closure due to COVID-19 outbreak
COVID-19 has claimed its first brewery closure in Connecticut, CT Post reported on March 25.

Hanging Hills Brewing Company, who closed their taproom on March 20, announced on Facebook on March 25 that they would close their doors to their Hartford brewery. "Seeing the bulk of our distribution pipeline shut down, we realized with this perfect storm we could not afford to stay operational given our cost structure," said the Brewery on Facebook. "While we would've preferred to go out with a banging party, the virus ended that hope and we opted for the measured response." The brewery did make mention of keeping their brand alive through partnerships with other breweries, or through other creative solutions. Hanging Hills Brewing Company has been brewing at their Ledyard Street location in Hartford since 2016.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech brewers stop refilling kegs, turn to bottles and cans
Czech breweries - including Pilsner Urquell and Budejovicky Budvar - have stopped refilling kegs and started storing their beer in cooled cellars as they seek to limit damage from pub closures caused by the coronavirus outbreak, The New York Times reported on March 26.

Breweries have also ramped up bottle and can production lines to offset a loss from keg sales both abroad and in the Czech Republic, which leads the world in per capita beer consumption.

"Nobody knows when the pubs will reopen," said Petr Kofron, manager of the Pilsner brewery in Prague, owned by Japan's Asahi.

"Most neighboring countries took the same measures and shut their pubs so export has shifted into bottles and cans," he told Reuters.

"Bottle lines and cans are running at full tilt. We hope our customers buy bottles and cans while they are at home."

The Czechs implemented some of Europe's toughest restrictions to blunt the coronavirus spread, banning non-essential movement while closing shops and restaurants, except for food and drugstores.

While pubs and some breweries still sell take-away beer to a smattering of walk-up customers, the drop in demand in a nation where residents drink an average 141 litres of beer per person annually has rippled through the ...More info on site

Whisky news India: United Spirits shuts down manufacturing units amid coronavirus lockdown
Diageo-controlled liquor maker United Spirits on March 26 said it has shut down its manufacturing units amidst the coronavirus lockdown, the Economic Times reported.

According to the company, it is not possible to make an assessment of the financial impact of this currently.

"In compliance with the nationwide lockdown announced by the Honourable Prime Minister on March 24, 2020, all the offices and manufacturing units of the Company will remain closed," said USL in a regulatory filing.

It further said: This shutdown will stay in effect until April 14, 2020, subject to further directives issued by the respective government authorities and the company's assessment of the prevailing situation."

Earlier this week, Diageo had announced to produce around 300,000 litres of bulk hand sanitiser across 15 manufacturing units for use by public healthcare workers and donate 500,000 litres ENA to the sanitiser industry to enable the production of more than two million units (250 ml each) of hand sanitisers.

The company will also support the hospitality sector with a Rs 3 crore healthcare cover to bartenders and donate approximately 150,000 masks to five state's public health departments.

"With the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in India over the past few days, the company has been closely monitoring the ...More info on site

Barley news France: Spring barley sowing accelerates in France
Spring barley sowing accelerated in France last week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on March 27, suggesting dry weather helped farmers catch up on field work after recent rain delays.

Farmers had sown 72% of the expected area by March 23, compared with 40% a week earlier, FranceAgriMer's weekly cereal crop report showed.

Progress still lagged the very brisk pace seen last year, when 97% of the area had been drilled by the same week, and was also running four days behind the average sowing pace of the past five years, FranceAgriMer's data showed.

Only 6% of the spring barley area had been sown in the previous three weeks as soggy field conditions held up work.

Analysts had expected last week's dry spell to boost the sowing pace, and continuing dry weather this week could help farmers round off spring barley drillings.

However, analysts are also monitoring the impact of widespread frosts this week, which may have damaged some young spring barley plants as well as earlier-sown crops resuming their growth cycle after winter. The condition of soft wheat, France's main cereal crop, was stable in the week to March 23, with 63% of plants rated good or excellent, unchanged from a week earlier, ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia suspends operations of its Petaling Jaya brewery
Heineken Malaysia Berhad has announced that it has suspended the operations of its brewery in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, in line with the government’s two-week movement control order to slow the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Malay Mail reported on March 25.

Heineken Malaysia stressed that the health and safety of its employees is its top priority, further stating that its staff had been kept regularly updated on Covid-19 and that preventive measures on travel and personal hygiene had been implemented according to guidance from the World Health Organisation and the Health Ministry.

“In accordance with the Government’s movement control order, our employees are working from home until 31 March 2020.

“Our Sungei Way Brewery has suspended operations and we have received approval from the authorities to allow a minimum number of workers to be on site to ensure the safety and integrity of the brewery during the stipulated period,” the company said in a statement last night.

Heineken Malaysia managing director Roland Bala was quoted in the same statement as saying: “We are living in unprecedented times, our first priority is the safety, health and wellbeing of our people, suppliers, customers, and consumers. At the same time, we commit to continue engaging the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Craft brewers band together to keep afloat
As the hospitality industry sheds thousands of jobs under coronavirus shutdowns, Australia’s craft brewers have banded together to keep their industry afloat, The Daily Telegraph reported on March 24.

Following the success of the ‘Buy From The Bush’ campaign that boosted businesses hit by the bushfires, the Keeping Local Alive campaign aims to do the same for Aussie breweries.

Topher Boehm, who owns Wildflower Brewing and Blending in Marrickville, said with the closure of pubs and taprooms, small breweries were now reliant on cellar door and online sales to stay afloat.

“Most of us are propped up by independent bottle shops, restaurants and bars,” Mr Boehm said.

He said a lot of breweries had already slowed down production as they tried to gauge how much product consumers will buy as takeaways and home deliveries.

“Without the volume (of beer) going to pubs … everyone’s having to move to cans or bottles,” he said.

“There’s more time associated with that and you’re not able to sell the same amount of beer you once were, that’s just the harsh reality of it.

“The campaign is really this thought about where your dollar is being spent … there are lots of breweries out there that are Australian owned, with Australian ...More info on site
