Brewery news Mexico: Mexico’s president says Constellation Brands accepts outcome of vote against new brewery in Mexicali
Mexico's president said on April 1 he had held productive talks with executives from U.S. brewer Constellation Brands Inc and that they accepted the outcome of a vote in the northern city of Mexicali to cancel a billion-dollar brewery being built there, Yahoo News reported.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in his regular morning news conference that new sites for the company's brewery are being considered and that Constellation Brands had agreed to accept a negotiated solution on how to proceed.

Mexicali is in one of the driest areas of Mexico and locals who were opposed to the brewery said the plant would endanger local water supplies. Constellation Brands disputed that.

Brewery news USA: D.G. Yuengling and Son Inc heads top 50 craft breweries in the US
The Brewers Association—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers—on April 1 released its annual list of the top 50 producing craft brewing companies and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.

“Although 2020 will be a markedly different year than 2019 for the craft brewing market, these companies are well positioned to help the craft category weather the current market uncertainty and rebound with the flavor, variety, and innovation that beer lovers have come to expect from small brewers,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association.

The top 5 craft breweries, according to the Association are:

1. D.G. Yuengling and Son Inc - Pottsville, PA 2. Boston Beer Co – Boston, MA 3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co – Chico, CA 4. New Belgium Brewing Co - Fort Collins, CO and San Francisco, CA 5. Duvel Moortgat - Paso Robles, CA, Kansas City, MO, Cooperstown, NY

The top 5 overall beer companies in the US are:

1. Anheuser-Busch InBev 2. Molson Coors 3. Constellation Brands 4. Heineken USA 5. Pabst Brewing Co

Brewery news Japan: Brewers from overseas adding to Japan’s craft beer diversity
Craft beer can be found just about anywhere in Japan, with each brew made from local ingredients to create a variety of regional tastes. Adding to this heady mix have been increasing numbers of young, talented brewers from overseas, who leave home to practice their craft in Japan, often in small, out-of-the-way communities, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

These foreign transplants bring homegrown tricks and techniques to concoct beers unique to Japan's thriving craft scene.

Ben Emrich is one of them. Last year, the young American chose the kitchen of a former day care facility to set up Nomcraft Brewing in the town of Aridagawa in Wakayama Prefecture. "People in Aridagawa helped us bring these tanks into this room," he said, motioning to the large brewing vessels. "They drove the car, and we built them together."

Originally from Portland, Oregon - where the craft beer boom never ended - Emrich manages the small-town brewery with Adam Baran of Chicago and Takumi Kaneko of Aichi Prefecture. The local government is trying to revive the sleepy town in west Japan, and has received urban planning advice from Emrich's home, which boasts more than 70 breweries.

Emrich first came to Japan in 2011 and worked at an ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Ban on social gatherings leads to decline in beer sales
The directive on social distancing to stop the spread of coronavirus disease, and the subsequent drop in the consumption of alcohol, has proved that drinking has little to do with access, The Standard reported on March 31.

On the contrary, the ban on social gatherings means beer consumers are hardly drinking even though Kenyans’ favourite brands are still available through cheaper outlets, including liquor stores and supermarkets.

In such outlets, the retail prices are often those recommended by the manufacturers, meaning that buyers would avoid the hefty margins loaded on the drinks' prices in bars to cover for their entertainment and hospitality.

Bars in Kenya were ordered closed in a March 22 directive that took effect immediately and with a near total compliance rate, with serious implications for brewers.

Naivasha-based Keroche Breweries has suspended the manufacturing of bottled beer while East African Breweries Ltd has shifted focus to the production of canned beverages.

“The brewery is open but due to the prevailing situation in the lockdown order on bars, there is no distribution being done,” said Keroche’s corporate affairs director John Nyongesa.

He added that beer production was “100 per cent down and the situation is ugly."

The firm has sent home hundreds of workers and opted ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Heineken appoint new presidents of Europe and Asia Pacific regions
Heineken N.V. announced on March 26 the appointments of Soren Hagh as President of the Europe region and Jacco van der Linden as President of the Asia Pacific region, both per 1 June 2020. Soren Hagh and Jacco van der Linden will join the HEINEKEN Executive Team per that same date.

Soren Hagh will succeed Stefan Orlowski who is currently Regional President for Europe, and whose decision to leave the company was announced on February 11, 2020. Brewery news UK: Society of Independent Brewers and Simply Hops create online initiative to help breweries, taprooms, bottle shops and retailers affected by coronavirus
UK’s Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has joined forces with hops producer Simply Hops to create a not-for-profit website, in a bid to save thousands of small independent breweries, taprooms, bottle shops and retailers affected by coronavirus across the UK and Europe, the Drinks Retailing News reported on March 27.

BeerisHere.org has been created by the two organisations – and supported by Simpsons malt, Lallemand Yeast and Brewers Select – to help people get beer delivered to them from their local independent breweries, bottle shops and retailers.

The move comes after the government announced that all cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants must close as part of measures to curb the spread of the virus.

The aim of the site is to help show consumers where they can buy beer from and showcase the huge amount of varieties which are available to them during this time when they can’t visit a local pub or bar.

Consumers will only have to enter their postcode to find out where they can easily get beer delivered to their homes.

Separately, SimplyHops is also encouraging people to join a virtual social hangout organised by their local breweries at 5pm every Friday. The concept also aims to ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Alcohol distribution companies pledging millions to help Spain’s struggling bars and restaurants
Alcohol distribution companies are pledging millions to help Spain’s 315,000 establishments and nearly 1.7 million hospitality and catering workers facing an uncertain future due to the coronavirus crisis, the Euro Weekly News reported on March 28.

J&B was the first to dig deep and pledge €1 million to help its Spanish and Portuguese hotel and catering clients. Some 2,500 clients will benefit from grants of €400.

Invertia Sara de Pablos, general manager of Diageo, parent company of J&B, Tanqueray, Johnnie Walker or Smirnoff, said that “along with the subsidy we are working on additional measures to ensure that, once this crisis is over, we can all enjoy our favourite bars and drinks with our friends and family.”

Diageo will also provide training from home for all professionals in the hospitality sector through an online platform offering a wide range of modules designed to increase the knowledge of bar staff and their skill set, added De Pablos.

Bacardi is donating €2.7 million to support bars and restaurants globally during the ‘darkest days for the establishments,’ while back in Spain, Heineken has launched a plan to support bars, restaurants and distributors, creating the ‘Heineken Guide of action for restaurants and bars.’

Barley news Russia: Agriculture Ministry proposes to limit grain exports for three months
Russia's Agriculture Ministry has proposed to limit grain exports for three months, it said on March 27, prompting concern among traders that the measures by the world's largest wheat exporter could be extended, Reuters reported.

In fellow Black Sea exporter Ukraine, the economy ministry on March 27 said it was monitoring wheat exports daily and would take measures if needed. Bakers and millers in the country had earlier asked for grain exports to be limited to prevent a surge in bread prices if the spread of the coronavirus accelerates.

The proposal to limit grain exports to 7 million tonnes for April-June was a response to the Russian government's request this week to consider whether exports of any food should be limited because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ministry said that the measure, if approved, would cover the main grain types - wheat, rye, barley and corn - to help to ensure stability in the domestic food market.

The size of the limit doesn't have much bite, traders said, because 7 million tonnes is more or less the general expectation for Russia's export volumes until the end of the 2019/20 season on June 30.

But the move has raised expectations that further steps might follow, given ...More info on site

Barley news World: China increases purchasing of Australian feed barley
China’s appetite for Australian feed barley appears to have been stoked in recent weeks with as many as six cargoes booked by the Middle Kingdom for nearby delivery, Grain Central reported on March 31.

The sales are reported to have been concluded at around US$220 per tonne cost and freight (c&f). This is in line with Chinese feed barley values of around US$210/t c&f taking into account the 3-per-cent tariff benefit Australia enjoys over alternative origins, and maybe a small quality premium.

The anti-dumping action may not have been resolved as yet, but Australian barley sales have been made to China and cargoes unloaded since harvest. The pace of those sales is certainly well behind normal, but it seems Chinese importers, particularly those with government equity, are less nervous about making Australian purchases. With the Australian grower around 90pc sold on barley, and the consumer only partially covered until new-crop becomes available in October, it seems the merchants here are long. They are also growing in confidence concerning business with China and have been happy to take out the demand when it surfaced.

The other big barley news last week was the results of the most recent Saudi Arabian tender. The state-owned buyer, ...More info on site
