Brewery news Sweden: Sweden’s response to Covid-19 presents opportunities for local brewers’ eCommerce
Sweden’s response to Covid-19 has made the country stand out by opting for a lighter touch. The country has not shut down its bars and restaurants, in fact, the only limit placed on them is that all customers must be served via table service. This has meant that the beer and cider industry in Sweden has yet to feel the impact of a lockdown like some European countries, the Drinks Insight Network reported on April 7.

However, this could soon change. The Swedish Government’s approach is facing increasing backlash as the death rate in the country has climbed higher than its lockdown neighbours. As the calls for lockdown grow stronger, the beer and cider industry could soon be faced with the same challenges seen in other countries in lockdown.

Lockdown will create supply chain issues as production slows and distribution becomes increasingly challenging due to the impact Covid-19 has on the workforce. There are already signs of this as the state owned monopoly Systembolaget is operating on a reduced delivery capacity due to Covid-19 cases in warehouse staff. In addition, as seen across much of Western Europe consumer behaviour changes. Fewer shopping trips are made and consumers reprioritise their purchases, and often ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Second week of March saw alcohol sales rise 30%
The coronavirus and safety measures around it have had a big impact on Czech shopping habits, with alcohol purchases rising sharply, Expats.cz reported on April 7.

Purchases have narrowed to fast-moving goods available at stores that remain open and online purchases. People eat more at home, due to restaurants being closed except for take out, and have stocked up to reduce the number of shopping trips needed.

The peak panic shopping time was the second week of March, when retail sales grew by nearly 40% compared to the same time of the previous year, but sales were significantly lower both a week before and a week after this panic shopping. On March 6, the Czech government announced mandatory quarantine for people returning from parts of Italy, and on March 12 the government declared a state of emergency.

The entire alcoholic beverage segment recorded a 14% increase in sales during the first four weeks of the crisis, from February 24 to March 22, compared to last year. In the second week of March, alcoholic beverages sales increased by almost 30%. The statistics are reported by the Czech Confederation of Commerce and Tourism (SOCR ČR), based on research by auditing firm Nielsen.

Already in the third ...More info on site
