Malaysia: Heineken continues to engage with government on resuming limited operations
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd continues to engage with the government on the matter of resuming limited operations with minimal number of essential staff as and when this is possible, The Sun Daily reported on April 16.
The suspension of operations of its Sungei Way Brewery remains, with Heineken Malaysia closely monitoring the impact of the movement control order on the group’s operations and financial objectives.
“This major negative macro-economic development is having a significant impact on Heineken Malaysia’s business,” it said in a statement on April 16.
Heineken Malaysia’s management is mobilised to enable the company to face this crisis in the best possible way and to protect the long term potential of its brands and businesses.
“The group has a strong balance sheet and management is focusing on efforts to mitigate the impact to its business, on efficiencies and protecting cash flow. Management has identified and is implementing mitigating actions to manage costs and to reduce the effect of suspended operations of the brewery on the financial results.”
The company will provide more information on its mitigating actions in its 2020 first quarter financial report which is scheduled for release in May 2020.

EU: New online platform giving Europeans access to local breweries
|
With hundreds of independent beer suppliers struggling to survive in coronavirus lockdown, one online platform is giving Europeans access to local breweries via home delivery, Euronews reported on April 15.
Buying local produce is widely recognised to be a more eco-friendly way to live. The idea is simple, the closer you are to the source of your food/drink, the shorter the distance it has to travel and the smaller your carbon footprint. Wholesaler Simply Hops has launched Beer is Here, a website linking hundreds of artisanal beer brands together in one place so that drinkers all over Europe can buy from their local supplier.
The service is free and all the money goes towards the independent brands, providing them with much needed support at a time when pubs and bars have been forced to close.
"Without continuing to support these businesses now during the lockdowns across Europe we risk not having them later, meaning we lose something special,” John Willetts, Director at Simply Hops, told Euronews Living.
So far, almost 1000 breweries have signed up and just under 28,000 users have logged on to search for craft beer, he said. Countries include the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and many more. “The global phenomenon

Jamaica: Red Stripe rolls out home-delivery service for full range of its products
|
Beer manufacturer Red Stripe has collaborated with Celebration Brands Limited (CBL) to roll out a home-delivery service, giving consumers access to the beer company's full range of products, the Jamaica Observer reported on April 15.
Officially launched on Friday, April 3, the Red Stripe/CBL free delivery service is now available to consumers in Kingston, St Catherine, Clarendon, and Mandeville between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.
In addition to brands in the Red Stripe portfolio, the new service covers popular brands such as Pepsi, Tropicana, Ting, and Gatorade.
“It's a project that was presented to our board a couple years ago. Executing a project at this scale is a huge endeavor that we believe will deliver solid growth for our business in the future, not to mention providing immediate support for our consumers, communities, and the country overall,” said CBL managing director Edwin Vaquerano.
Prior to the full roll-out, Red Stripe had experimented with a delivery service via WhatsApp to complement a series of sponsored online parties. With the CBL service now operational, the beer company says it will allow the brands to expand beyond the online party sphere.
“Red Stripe is known for having a very active innovation pipeline. In the last

Australia: Increased online sales of alcohol don’t mean increase in consumption
|
After the forced shut down of the on-premise industry, many Australians mistakenly predicted that bottle shops would be next, and flocked to retailers to stock up, The Shout reported on April 16.
The industry’s reaction to panic buying like this has been swift and proactive, with Retail Drinks rolling out a voluntary purchase limit initiative, except for in Western Australia, where the state government mandated it first.
Before and after these measures, continued peaks have been noted in online and home delivered orders. As recently reported by The Shout, online alcohol sales increased between 50 and 500 per cent for retailers in March, compared to the same period last year. Although many retailers are now saying that an initial sales boom has calmed down, online orders continue to be higher than usual.
Coinciding with these records, it’s becoming more common to see warnings and cautionary tales about overindulging in alcohol, drawing connections between a rise in sales with a rise in consumption.
However, an increase in certain types or methods of sales does not directly imply a dangerous rise (if any) in overall consumption. Considering the proactive industry measures, as well as the pre-existing Retail Drinks Online Code of Conduct, such
