Brewery news Canada, BC: Government liquor stores report surge in liquor sales but many craft brewers struggle to stay afloat
B.C. government liquor stores have reported a surge in liquor sales since the COVID-19 quarantine began almost a month ago, with a 40% increase compared to this time last year. However, that hasn’t translated into increased sales for craft brewers, unfortunately—many of whom are struggling to stay afloat while their tasting rooms are closed, the Business in Vancouver reported on April 16.

Large volume craft breweries across the province have seen slight increases in sales of bottles and cans, but sales of kegged beer have been decimated by the closure of restaurants and bars province-wide.

“We have seen our can sales rise by about 10%, but we’ve lost our substantial keg sales like all breweries have,” says Gary Lohin, head brewer at Central City Brewers + Distillers. “We did lose some employees for a couple of weeks, because we had a policy that if you call in sick for any reason, you had to stay away for two weeks. Most employees are back again.”

Central City has pivoted to hand sanitizer production, and already produced more than 30,000 L, donating 4,000 L of that to the City of Surrey to distribute to hospitals, care homes and shelters.

“That’s what the world needs at the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: California’s craft brewers see an average 43% decrease in sales since shelter-in-place orders began
Since shelter-in-place orders began, reports have circulated that Americans are drinking significantly more alcohol than usual, with retail beer sales up 41% year-over-year during the week of March 15, according to Nielsen.

Those figures might make it sound like breweries, especially in craft beer-loving California, should be seeing strong sales numbers right now. But the opposite is true, according to a new survey released by the California Craft Brewers Association, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on April 14.

California’s nearly 1,040 craft breweries, which represented $3.3 billion worth of sales in 2018, have seen an average 43% decrease in overall sales since shelter-in-place orders began, the survey says. That’s because the average craft brewery does not sell most of its beer in grocery stores or even liquor stores: On average, a California brewery sells 50% of its beer through its own taproom, and 20% through bars or restaurants, which are currently closed.

“The reality is that grocery store (beer) sales are not making up for the loss of sporting events, bars, restaurants,” said Tom McCormick, executive director of the California Craft Brewers Association. “The notion that people are drinking more at home — I doubt it. People aren’t going out and playing pool ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: North Water Brewing Co. hopes to be able to open in Kent by Labor Day
In his previous career as an engineer, Don Schjeldahl toured a lot of cities and towns all over the world. He found areas he liked shared a specific trait.

A craft brewery.

Through his job he began working with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., a vanguard of the craft-beer movement. Schjeldahl even spent two years helping the venerable brewery open its outpost in Asheville, North Carolina.

That helped plant the brewing seed.

Schjeldahl met Ken Carter, a local home brewer, and that mesh of business and beer has resulted in North Water Brewing Co. Scheduled opening date is around Labor Day, though shelter-in-place orders have made that a bit of a moving target.

"Construction has started, equipment's coming, we're getting prepped for product," Schjeldahl said. "If everything happens right and coronavirus goes away and people get thirsty again, we will be there for them."

Carter, 37, is from Tallmadge, while the semi-retired Schjeldahl, 70, is from Kent. They are part of a large group of investors who bought a 4,200-square foot building at 101 Crain Ave. in Kent, near the convergence of North Water and Lake streets.

The building dates to the 1920s and had been a car dealership and collision-repair shop, they said. It's a long, industrial, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Royal Bliss Brewing already open for takeout orders in Denver
What do you do when the brewery you’ve spent years designing and building is set to open during a worldwide pandemic?

You open your doors, of course.

“You just have to go with the flow,” said Ginger Griffin, who recently opened Royal Bliss Brewing in Denver with her husband, Larry Griffin Jr. “Anytime you start a new business, regardless of the industry, you have to be adaptable. But I think the nicest thing about the community we’re in is that everyone has been excited about us to open.”

The Denver brewery has indeed seen a great deal of support since opening for takeout orders on March 26, with a steady flow of new and repeat customers so far. Unfortunately, most of them make it only as far as the lobby, since breweries and restaurants may only sell food to-go right now under North Carolina orders meant to slow the spread of COVID-19.

That means visitors get only a brief glimpse at a brewery years in the making. Building from the ground up offered the Griffins the unique opportunity to do things exactly as they wanted, without consideration for an existing building’s size or layout.

But before building, the Griffins toured “nearly every brewery in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken continues to engage with government on resuming limited operations
Heineken Malaysia Bhd continues to engage with the government on the matter of resuming limited operations with minimal number of essential staff as and when this is possible, The Sun Daily reported on April 16.

The suspension of operations of its Sungei Way Brewery remains, with Heineken Malaysia closely monitoring the impact of the movement control order on the group’s operations and financial objectives.

“This major negative macro-economic development is having a significant impact on Heineken Malaysia’s business,” it said in a statement on April 16.

Heineken Malaysia’s management is mobilised to enable the company to face this crisis in the best possible way and to protect the long term potential of its brands and businesses.

“The group has a strong balance sheet and management is focusing on efforts to mitigate the impact to its business, on efficiencies and protecting cash flow. Management has identified and is implementing mitigating actions to manage costs and to reduce the effect of suspended operations of the brewery on the financial results.”

The company will provide more information on its mitigating actions in its 2020 first quarter financial report which is scheduled for release in May 2020.

Brewery news EU: New online platform giving Europeans access to local breweries
With hundreds of independent beer suppliers struggling to survive in coronavirus lockdown, one online platform is giving Europeans access to local breweries via home delivery, Euronews reported on April 15.

Buying local produce is widely recognised to be a more eco-friendly way to live. The idea is simple, the closer you are to the source of your food/drink, the shorter the distance it has to travel and the smaller your carbon footprint. Wholesaler Simply Hops has launched Beer is Here, a website linking hundreds of artisanal beer brands together in one place so that drinkers all over Europe can buy from their local supplier.

The service is free and all the money goes towards the independent brands, providing them with much needed support at a time when pubs and bars have been forced to close.

"Without continuing to support these businesses now during the lockdowns across Europe we risk not having them later, meaning we lose something special,” John Willetts, Director at Simply Hops, told Euronews Living.

So far, almost 1000 breweries have signed up and just under 28,000 users have logged on to search for craft beer, he said. Countries include the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and many more. “The global phenomenon ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Red Stripe rolls out home-delivery service for full range of its products
Beer manufacturer Red Stripe has collaborated with Celebration Brands Limited (CBL) to roll out a home-delivery service, giving consumers access to the beer company's full range of products, the Jamaica Observer reported on April 15.

Officially launched on Friday, April 3, the Red Stripe/CBL free delivery service is now available to consumers in Kingston, St Catherine, Clarendon, and Mandeville between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.

In addition to brands in the Red Stripe portfolio, the new service covers popular brands such as Pepsi, Tropicana, Ting, and Gatorade.

“It's a project that was presented to our board a couple years ago. Executing a project at this scale is a huge endeavor that we believe will deliver solid growth for our business in the future, not to mention providing immediate support for our consumers, communities, and the country overall,” said CBL managing director Edwin Vaquerano.

Prior to the full roll-out, Red Stripe had experimented with a delivery service via WhatsApp to complement a series of sponsored online parties. With the CBL service now operational, the beer company says it will allow the brands to expand beyond the online party sphere.

“Red Stripe is known for having a very active innovation pipeline. In the last ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Increased online sales of alcohol don’t mean increase in consumption
After the forced shut down of the on-premise industry, many Australians mistakenly predicted that bottle shops would be next, and flocked to retailers to stock up, The Shout reported on April 16.

The industry’s reaction to panic buying like this has been swift and proactive, with Retail Drinks rolling out a voluntary purchase limit initiative, except for in Western Australia, where the state government mandated it first.

Before and after these measures, continued peaks have been noted in online and home delivered orders. As recently reported by The Shout, online alcohol sales increased between 50 and 500 per cent for retailers in March, compared to the same period last year. Although many retailers are now saying that an initial sales boom has calmed down, online orders continue to be higher than usual.

Coinciding with these records, it’s becoming more common to see warnings and cautionary tales about overindulging in alcohol, drawing connections between a rise in sales with a rise in consumption.

However, an increase in certain types or methods of sales does not directly imply a dangerous rise (if any) in overall consumption. Considering the proactive industry measures, as well as the pre-existing Retail Drinks Online Code of Conduct, such ...More info on site
