ANTIVIRAL ACTIVITY OF HOP CONSTITUENTS AGAINST A SERIES OF DNA AND RNA VIRUSES

ABSTRACT
Already in 2004, a US Research Team found a number of viruses that can be influenced and suppressed by hop components. They investigated whether hop extracts and purified hop components have antiviral activity. These hop constituents were tested for antiviral activity against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) as a surrogate model of hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), influenza A virus (FLU-A), influenza B virus (FLU-B), rhinovirus (Rhino), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), yellow fever virus (YFV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV2). The extracts all failed to prevent the replication of HIV, FLU-A, FLU-B, RSV and YFV. However, a xanthohumol-enriched hop extract displayed weak to moderate antiviral activity against BVDV with IC(50) (required amount for suppression below 50%) values in the low microg/ml range. Pure iso-alpha-acids demonstrated low to moderate antiviral activity against both BVDV and CMV, also with low IC(50) values. No antiviral activity was detected using beta-acids or a hop oil extract. Xanthohumol as an individual component accounted for the antiviral activity observed against BVDV, HSV-1 and HSV-2. xanthohumol was found to be a more potent antiviral agent against these viruses than the isomer iso-xanthohumol. For Rhino, the opposite trend was observed, with iso-xanthohumol showing superior antiviral activity to that observed with xanthohumol. Xanthohumol also showed antiviral activity against CMV, suggesting that it might have a generalized anti-herpesvirus antiviral activity. Again, superior antiviral activity was observed with the xanthohumol isomer against CMV. In summary, iso-alpha-acids and xanthohumol were shown to have a low-to-moderate antiviral activity against several viruses.

Brewery news World: Molson Coors’ Q1 net sales fall by 8.7%
Molson Coors Beverage Co. CEO Gavin Hattersley described the beverage manufacturer's first quarter as a period unlike any other in history. Faced with the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, Molson Coors reported an 8.7% decline in net sales, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on April 30.

Some of the company's North American sales declines were a result of brewery downtime associated with the Milwaukee workplace shooting in late February, the company reported.

“Despite the early progress, our first quarter results were disproportionately affected by the coronavirus, a pandemic that has changed the world - not just for our business, and our industry, but for the entire global economy," Hattersley said in a press release.

"Like everyone else, the full impact and what our new normal looks like going forward is still uncertain, but coronavirus has had, and will have, a material impact on our business. We will continue to navigate this challenging time by first protecting our employees and mitigating the short-term risks, and second ensuring that we position the business to compete and win in the long-term.”

Brewery news Belgium: Survey finds out alcohol consumption under lockdown remains mostly stable
A university research survey has found that alcohol consumption in Belgium is remaining mostly stable during the country's coronavirus lockdown, with only one out of four respondents saying they are drinking more while confined at home, Fox25 reported on April 29.

A team of researchers at the University of Louvain said on April 29 that their online survey of more than 10,000 adults this month revealed "the absence of a generalized increase in self-reported alcohol consumption." They described the finding as "counterintuitive."

"Contrary to the widely held idea that alcohol consumption could increase massively during confinement, these results are good news," Pierre Maurage, a psychology professor who led the research, said.

More than 45% of the respondents reported drinking the same amount as they did before Belgium's government imposed the lockdown last month, while 29% said they were drinking less. Among the latter group, alcohol consumption decreased by an average of 10 doses a week, the equivalent of 10 glasses of wine.

The survey results showed the decline in drinking was more frequent among men and people aged 20-40, while more frequent drinking was observed among those with higher levels of education.

In a more expected way, the survey findings showed that the stress and ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Femsa warns Mexican stores are quickly running out of beer amid breweries shutdown
Fomento Economico Mexicano SAB, which operates Latin America’s largest chain of convenience stores, said its Oxxo stores in Mexico are quickly running out of beer after the government shuttered breweries as non-essential businesses last month, Bloomberg reported on April 30.

The company, known as Femsa, told analysts in a conference call on April 30 that it was unclear when Mexican breweries run by Anheuser-Bush InBev’s Grupo Modelo and Heineken NV would be able to start operating again.

“If and when we run out of beer, which could happen in the next couple of weeks, that would be negative for sales,” Juan Fonseca, Femsa’s head of investor relations, on a conference call with analysts. “I don’t want people to get off the call and run to the store, but right now we are probably looking at about 10 days of inventory.”

Femsa CEO Eduardo Padilla said that running breweries doesn’t represent a significant health risk and he hoped they would find a way to start operations soon. However, he said beer’s role as a “social lubricant” could be seen getting in the way of the government’s call to stay at home. “I think the government might be afraid if they drink ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: UK supermarket Tesco gives beer range a significant makeover
Tesco has given its beer range a significant makover, drafting in a slew of new brews, The Grocer reported on April 29.

The supermarket added some 70 new SKUs this week, with a major focus on its craft range.

New entrants include brews from Northern Monk, The London Beer Factory and Sierra Nevada.

It also marks the UK supermarket debut of cult ‘gypsy’ brewery Evil Twin. A duo of its beers – Wake Up and Smell The Gose (6.5% abv) and More or Less Evil Pale Ale (5%) – have rolled out.

They are being brewed for Evil Twin in the UK by BrewDog. A collaborative Nitro Stout created by the two brands also rolled into Tesco in early March.

A craft beer industry source told The Grocer Tesco was ”keeping to its beer range review as normal. They feel if they postponed it then it would end up being another year before they were able to rejig the category”, and that it was ”betting big” on BrewDog with the update.

The action wasn’t limited to craft beers. St Austell’s newly canned Proper Job IPA gained space, as did Stella Artois’ new alcohol-free lager.

Meanwhile, many Molson Coors SKUs have disappeared from Tesco’s shelves since the ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Government extends ban on alcohol sales until further notice
Drinkers in Thailand desperate for a tall beer or a nightcap after a three-week ban on alcohol sales are out of luck. Authorities in the capital, Bangkok, have announced that the ban, imposed in April to fight the spread of the coronavirus by discouraging irresponsible social gatherings, will be extended until further notice, The New York Times reported on April 30.

The ban was imposed for varying lengths of time in all 76 provinces and is likely to be renewed in all of them. Bars and restaurants were already closed in March, except for takeout and delivery.

Niks Anuman Rajadhon, the owner of two cocktail bars in Bangkok, said his business was greatly affected by the March closures, leaving him little cash flow to take care of his 14 employees.

“When the closure was imposed, we understood and cooperated with the state to control the pandemic. We adapted our business by selling bottled alcohol drinks and drink vouchers that can be used when the bars are reopened,” he said Thursday. “But the ban on selling booze announced April 9 was like the last nail hammered into our coffin, completely sealing off business."

“Now that the ban is extended, I am very stressed,” he said. ...More info on site
