WHERE XANTHOHUMOL IS ALSO PROMISING

ABSTRACT
Infections with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) have a severe impact on the world swine industry. However, commercially available vaccines provide only incomplete protection against this disease. Thus, novel approaches to control PRRSV infection are essential for a robust and sustainable swine industry. In this study, xanthohumol (Xn), a prenylated flavonoid extracted from hops (Humulus lupulus L), was screened amongst 386 natural products to inhibit PRRSV proliferation and alleviate oxidative stress induced by PRRSV. A group of Chinese researchers found that Xn could inhibit different PRRSV sub-genotype strain infections. In addition, it caused decreased expression of interleukin and tumor necrosis factor, both relevant for communication of infected cells. Animal challenge experiments showed that Xn effectively alleviated clinical signs, lung pathology, and inflammatory responses in lung tissues of pigs induced by highly pathogenic PRRSV infection. The results demonstrate that Xn is a promising therapeutic agent to combat PRRSV infections.

Brewery news USA: On-premise channel shutdown could result in $80 bln losses for beer industry
The near-nationwide shutdown of the on-premise channel will result in a loss of $8 billion for the beer industry if it continues into June, National Beer Wholesalers Association chief economist Lester Jones said during a State of the Industry webinar hosted by the NBWA and the Beer Institute (BI) last week, Brewbound reported.

“We really need to step up our conversations and talk about how the loss here to the industry is significant,” Jones said. “It’s not going to be made up through grocery stores and 30-packs and cases people are stashing in their garages. It will not be compensated by those additional off-premise purchases. And, of course, the longer the shutdown, the greater the loss.”

On-premise sales account for 9% of the industry’s $328 billion annual economic impact, which translates to $3.1 billion per month. If a quarter of the on-premise channel reopens in May and half reopens in June, the beer industry stands to lose $8 billion.

As states begin laying out plans for the reopening of their economies, the beer industry will need to consider the health of geographic markets when deciding how to return to the shuttered on-premise channel, Jones said.

“The new marketing strategies won’t just be income and ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Beer supply shortage drives black market prices through the roof
With beer production having been deemed a nonessential activity during the coronavirus pandemic, breweries have been shut down since early April. Now Mexico is running out of beer, the Mexico News Daily reported on May 4.

The short supply has driven prices through the roof on the black market, where a six-pack of cold ones can cost up to 300% more than pre-coronavirus prices.

Smugglers on the northern border are bringing in clandestine shipments of beer from the U.S., where production continues.

In southern Mexico, illegal beer runners in Tabasco, where alcohol sales have been prohibited for the past month, recently saw 85 cases of beer meant for resale seized by authorities. The shipment was destroyed by a bulldozer.

Last weekend at least 25 states across Mexico reported beer shortages both in large supermarket chains and corner stores.

As of May 1, the Oxxo chain of convenience stores had inventory for 10 days.

Some areas of the country are under government-mandated dry laws either banning outright the sale of alcohol or limiting the hours during which it can be purchased, but the shortage has imposed de facto dry laws on other regions simply because supplies do not exist.

And in areas where beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery MD has fresh hopes for gradual restart of economy
The managing director of Coopers Brewery says the rapid flattening of the coronavirus curve in his home state of South Australia gives fresh hope for a gradual restart of the economy soon, The Australian Financial Review reported on May 4.

Tim Cooper says the hit to the local economy is enormous but the state is in a good position to be able to slowly rebound earlier than the eastern states, with the right controls in place.

"My feeling is that we can't be shielded from the virus indefinitely,'' Dr Cooper said.

On May 4 the state reported no new cases of coronavirus, making 12 consecutive days without any new COVID-19 infections being reported. SA's Chief Public Health Officer Dr Nicola Spurrier said there had been a 98 per cent recovery rate, with 427 people having recovered from the disease. She said 61,000 tests had been conducted since February in the state.

Announcements on any potential lifting of restrictions are earmarked for Friday, after a national cabinet meeting.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall said a round of $10,000 cash grants to struggling small businesses were being paid on May 4, and were designed to work in combination with the Federal Government's economic assistance programs.

Brewery news USA: Anheuser-Busch wins latest round of beer wars against Molson
A federal appeals court on May 1 struck down a lower court's ruling in favor of brewing giant Molson Coors, determining that Anheuser-Busch can advertise and use packaging implying that its rival beers contain corn syrup, KATU reported.

The order from a three-judge panel on the 7th U.S. Court of Appeals overturns a federal judge's ruling from September in Wisconsin. The judge had ordered Anheuser-Busch, which makes Bud Light, to stop making the corn syrup claims about Miller Lite and other Molson Coors products.

“If Molson Coors does not like the sneering tone of Anheuser-Busch’s ads, it can mock Bud Light in return,” the appeals court ruled. “Litigation should not be a substitute for competition in the market.”

Molson Coors sued its rival in March 2019, saying Anheuser-Busch had spent as much as $30 million on a “false and misleading” campaign, including Super Bowl ads that showed Bud Light knights delivering a barrel of corn syrup to a Miller Lite castle. Cardboard packaging on Bud Light six-packs, 12-packs and 24-packs said “No Corn Syrup” in bold letters and invited customers to visit a web site where it lists its ingredients. Bud Light is brewed with water, barley, rice and hops.

Molson Coors uses corn ...More info on site
