HOPS AND ANTI-INFLUENZA ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Italian researchers tested a hydroalcoholic hop extract for its anti-influenza activity. The ability of the extract to interfere with different phases of viral replication was assessed, as well as its effect on the intracellular status being unbalanced in infected cells. A phytochemical characterization of the extract was performed. The researchers found that hop extract significantly inhibited replication of various viral strains, at different times from infection. Viral replication was partly inhibited when virus was incubated with extract before infection, suggesting a direct effect on the virions. Since hop extract was able to restore the conditions of infected cells, its antiviral activity might also be due to an interference with redox-sensitive pathways required for viral replication. Accordingly, the extract exerted radical scavenging and reducing effects and inhibited lipoperoxidation and cytotoxicity. Using phytochemical analysis, different phenolics were identified, which altogether might contribute to the antiviral effect. These results highlight anti-influenza and antioxidant properties of hop extract, which encourage further in vivo studies to evaluate its possible application.

Brewery news USA: Coronavirus lockdown could cost the beer industry $1 billion in untapped beer
Perfectly good beer is going bad in kegs in thousands at a time.

That’s the problem facing brewers, distributors and bars that are dealing with a massive supply of untapped kegs spread out across the US as the coronavirus lockdown persists, Yahoo Canada Finance reported on May 8.

In fact, the growing mass of past-prime kegs has gotten so bad, following a canceled March Madness tournament, the delayed start to baseball, and a St. Patrick’s Day in lockdown, that one beer distributor trade group estimates it’s become a nearly $1 billion wash for the beer industry.

“We think there's close to a billion dollars worth of impact directly to the beer industry as it relates to just the loss from the product alone,” National Beer Wholesalers Association CEO and President Craig Purser told Yahoo Finance. “This was the worst time this could happen.”

According to Purser, who represents more than 3,000 independently licensed beer distributors across America, on-site consumption of beer at restaurants and bars is highest on St. Patrick’s Day every year. While beer sales at grocery stores rose as more states enacted lockdown orders, on-site consumption still accounts for about 20% of total beer consumption in America. Losing that consumption ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Heineken to keep beer production on halt until restrictions are lifted
Heineken México says that it will keep its beer production on halt until authorities have lifted the restrictions to reactivate the national economy. The announcement from the Mexico brewer came on the heels of other announcements of an early May restart, the Riviera Maya News reported on May 7.

“At Heineken México, we reiterate that we have suspended our distribution operations since April 6, and that we are attentive to the moment in which the authorities allow their resumption, always safeguarding the care of the environment, health and safety of our collaborators and the population in general,” said the beer consortium that groups the Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma companies.

The beer firm denied social media rumors that as of May 2 or 5, they will begin production.

“We reject the false statements and ask citizens to ignore this information, which causes confusion,” they said.

Heineken was one of the first brewers in the country to announce the temporary suspension of production and distribution due to the current epidemic.

Brewery news USA, NC: Noblebraü Brewing officially moves into new Brevard location
It was a busy afternoon on King Street on Wednesday, May 6 as Noblebraü Brewing – Brevard's newest craft beer purveyor – officially moved into the neighborhood after several hours spent unloading large pieces of equipment, the Transylvania Times reported.

Noblebraü is the creation of Brevard resident Cody Noble.

Noble, 29, previously served as head brewer at Boojum Brewing Co. before leaving to take over business operations at 185 King Street with his fiancé, Madeline, in February.

Given his background, starting his own brewery was a long-standing goal for Noble and seeing all the equipment go from the 18-wheeler to its final resting place inside the building was the first step in realizing that vision.

"It's been a long time coming," Noble said. "This is something I've wanted to do really badly over the past year."

The brewery will be housed in an adjacent space connected to the 185 King Street venue that was previously used as an office and to store equipment. Noble said he plans to brew a variety of beers, from sours to lights, and hazy IPAs to dark beers, but he does want to emphasize Belgian style beers.

Initially, Noblebraü will offer draft sales at 185 King Street, as well as kegs ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: South x SouthEast Minnesota Brewing Company hopes to launch in mid-to-late June
At a spot that is so recognizable to southeast Minnesotans driving along Highway 52 is a new blue barn, KAAL reported on May 8.

“We’ve looked at, what does southeast Minnesota look like to us? And we’ve said you know it’s a lot of farms, hence we have a barn structure. It is laid back and people aren’t in a rush,” said Ann Fahy-Gust, master brewer and co-owner of South x SouthEast Minnesota Brewing Company.

The new brewery sits at the site of the former Pine Cheese Mart, and most recently the Von Klopp Brew Shop. But behind the new project is a familiar face.

“This project is definitely a labor of love at this point,” said co-owner Tessa Leung, who you may recognize from Grand Rounds Brewing in Rochester.

“I grew up here. I’m – I’m from Stewartville, and I am a small town gal,” Leung said.

For months, the project was going along smoothly.

“The construction piece has gone as planned. We’re able to do everything because construction’s considered essential,” Fahy-Gust said.

But for weeks now they’ve been at a standstill.

“Our plumbing permit has been at the state for nine weeks. A lot of the builders submitted plans early on when this was starting to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Queen Creek Town Council votes to recommend microbrewery licence approval for AFT Brewery LLC
Queen Creek Town Council recently voted to recommend that the state liquor board approve a Series 3 in-state microbrewery license for AFT Brewery LLC, Your Valley reported on May 8.

Bruce Frederick of 19312 E. Calle de Flores in Queen Creek submitted the application to the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control.

Several e-mails from members of the public in favor of the license application were read into the record at the May 6 Town Council meeting.

“The company produces high-quality products and will be an asset to the local market,” Sanjay Khunkhun of Chandler wrote.

“Having tasted samples of AFT, I can say without a doubt that this would be an exceptional addition for consumers to try,” Tim Flores of Chandler wrote.

“Nothing hits the spot quite like an ice cold beer on a warm summer day in Arizona. And if it’s from a local brewer? It is twice as enjoyable to have a great product and support local business,” he said.

The Town Council voted unanimously to approve the recommendation to the state liquor board in a public hearing consent agenda with other items. On the dais were Vice Mayor Julia Wheatley and Councilmembers Jake Hoffman, Robin Benning and Emilena Turley. Meeting by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: 4 Noses Brewing opens Wild Provisions Beer Project in Boulder
Since its rough and tumble beginnings, Colorado’s residents have always shared a reputation for their wild west, anything goes, experimental nature. Sure the state has rich historical roots, but that reverence for the old has always been blended with an eye on innovation, which has resulted in the best of both worlds, porchdrinking.com reported on May 8.

On May 8, 4 Noses Brewing out of Broomfield, CO opened Wild Provisions Beer Project just up the road in Boulder, a new side-project focused on experimental spontaneous and mixed fermentation Sours and Farmhouse Ales, as well as Czech-style open-fermented Lagers.

For Tommy Bibliowicz, founder of 4 Noses Brewing, Wild Provisions serves as an imagination playground that aims to immerse visitors in the science and artistry of old-world brewing traditions paired with an elevated customer experience. Where 4 Noses appeals to a more approachable modern-day brewery experience, it is clear that Wild Provisions is the evolutionary culmination of Bibliowicz’s true passions in beer.

“I’ve always been interested in open-top fermentation since my brewing school days,” explained Bibliowicz. “These beers may not be the highest selling products by volume, but this is what we really love.”

In order to fully translate that vision, Wild Provisions spares no expense ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Water Street Brewing Company has its liquor license suspended due to violation of coronavirus shutdown order
New York state regulators have suspended the liquor license of a Binghamton craft brewery after the business was accused of violating the coronavirus shutdown order, wnbf.com reported on May 7.

According to the State Liquor Authority, the Water Street Brewing Company was found operating in violation of Governor Andrew Cuomo's executive order requiring bars to stop on-premises serving.

City police said co-owner Kristin Andrascik and employee Nicholas Hall were arrested after officers found people drinking at the bar inside the business late at night on April 22.

Businesses with liquor licenses are required to allow inspections by police to ensure compliance with the law.

The liquor authority reported when officers asked the owner to enter the establishment, she refused, in violation with the Alcoholic Beverage Control law.

In a news release, the authority said the head brewer was hostile to officers. He allegedly blocked the entrance while a patron shouted profanities at the officers.

The liquor authority on Wednesday charged the business with several violations including failure to comply with the governor's executive orders regarding COVID-19 restrictions. The establishment also was charged with failure to supervise the licensed premises and failure to permit an inspection.

The emergency suspension was ordered at a special meeting of the authority's ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Granite Brewery shuts down Halifax operations after 35 years
One of Canada’s original craft breweries has shut down operations after 35 years, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 8.

Granite Brewery was opened by Kevin Keefe in 1985 in Ginger’s Tavern on Hollis Street in Halifax, and was the first modern brewpub in eastern North America.

The brewery moved several times in subsequent years – including stints at The Henry House, another location of Ginger’s, and a production brewery on Stairs Street – and operating out of the Propeller Brewing facility on Gottingen Street since early 2019.

Since the latest iteration of Granite was dedicated exclusively to draught and cask packaging, the closure of bars and restaurants due to COVID-19 resulted in an immediate loss of all sales for the brewery, which was reportedly the main factor in Keefe’s decision to close.

This closure does not affect the Toronto location of Granite Brewery, which was launched by Kevin and his brother Ron Keefe in 1991, and remains open with beer and food available for takeout and delivery during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Brewery news Australia: Independent craft beer faces challenges as people mostly buy cheaper mass production beer during lockdown
Independent craft beer faces challenges, according to a report from IRI Worldwide which has highlighted the move by consumers to larger packs and lower-priced beer during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Brews News reported on May 7.

According to data from the IRI, panic buying at the end of March, leading to a temporary surge in alcohol sales, highlighted emerging consumer trends as values, motivations and buying habits change.

The IRI said that the beer segment enjoyed the strongest alcohol category uplift during this spike – showing growth of 60 per cent for the last week in March from the lowest base in comparison to wine and spirits.

However independent players are facing “considerable challenges” it said, as the move to value and bulk beer favours bigger brewers such as Lion and Carlton & United Breweries.

The analytics and insights firm said that this shift is likely driven by the perception of volume for value during a period of perceived limited access to stock, and as consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of household budgets.

During the surge in alcohol sales at the end of March following the federal government’s mandatory venue closures, more Australians were buying liquor.

They were buying more often and in greater amounts ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Winter crops losses due to drought estimated at 2.6% of all areas planted
The losses of winter crops due to drought in Ukraine are estimated at 234,000 ha, which is 2.6% of all areas with winter crops, the Ministry for Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture has told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to the ministry, the most affected by the drought are winter rape crops – 103,000 ha, wheat – 74,000 ha, barley – 53,000 ha, and peas – 1,300 0 ha.

Potential crop losses in 2020/2021 agri-year for winter wheat are 216,650 tonnes, winter rape – 211,890 tonnes, winter barley – 150,820 tonnes, sugar beets – 50,030 tonnes, peas – 3,050 tonnes, winter rye – 539 tonnes.

At the same time, the Ministry of Economy estimates the possible loss of revenue for winter rape at UAH2.14 billion (19% of the possible income from crops), winter wheat – UAH0.99 billion (3%), winter barley – UAH0.63 billion (12%), and sugar beets – UAH0.03 billion (2%).

“In March-April this year, there was rainfall deficit throughout Ukraine. As a result, spring air drought developed and deepened, which combined with soil drought in many areas of the southern regions,” the ministry said.

According to the Ministry of Economy, in Odessa region, where there is the longest and most severe rainfall deficit since last summer, agrometeorological ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Brussels Beer Project to invest EUR6 mln in a new brewery in Brussels
The brewers of the Brussels Beer Project (BBP) are investing €6 million in a new brewery in Anderlecht. The company announced this on May 8, The Brussels Times reported.

The new brewery will have an annual capacity of 35,000 hectolitres and will allow BBP to brew all its beers in Brussels. Currently, BBP has a small brewery in Rue Dansaert in Brussels, while two-thirds of its production occurs at a partner brewery in Limburg.

The Dansaert site will remain operational but will shift focus onto experiments on smaller brews, something which has become a characteristic of the brewery.

The brewery aims to be self-sufficient in terms of electricity, through the use of solar energy, while the hot water generated by the production will be used to heat the building. The new project will also feature a garden of almost 1,000 square meters and a taproom to accommodate more than 25,000 people a year, the BBP officials say.

Work on the new brewery will start in September 2020, which is expected to open doors one year later. The company will double its workforce at the same time, aiming to eventually employ 50 people.

The investment fund Invest for Jobs is contributing €2.6 million and a loan ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Adnams could double production of famous low-alcohol beer Ghost Ship
Southwold brewer Adnams could double production of its famous Ghost Ship drink by 2022 - meaning low-alcohol beer could make up 15% of its production, the East Anglian Daily Times reported on May 7.

Ghost Ship 0.5% currently makes up 7% of what the firm makes.
