HOPS AND ANTI-INFLUENZA ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Italian researchers tested a hydroalcoholic hop extract for its anti-influenza activity. The ability of the extract to interfere with different phases of viral replication was assessed, as well as its effect on the intracellular status being unbalanced in infected cells. A phytochemical characterization of the extract was performed. The researchers found that hop extract significantly inhibited replication of various viral strains, at different times from infection. Viral replication was partly inhibited when virus was incubated with extract before infection, suggesting a direct effect on the virions. Since hop extract was able to restore the conditions of infected cells, its antiviral activity might also be due to an interference with redox-sensitive pathways required for viral replication. Accordingly, the extract exerted radical scavenging and reducing effects and inhibited lipoperoxidation and cytotoxicity. Using phytochemical analysis, different phenolics were identified, which altogether might contribute to the antiviral effect. These results highlight anti-influenza and antioxidant properties of hop extract, which encourage further in vivo studies to evaluate its possible application.

Barley news USA & China: China allows barley imports from the United States
Barley from the United States can now be exported to China following the approval of a phytosanitary protocol by both countries, a market development achievement years in the making finally accomplished with the boost of the US-China Phase 1 deal signed in January, Grain Central reported on May 15.

The notice on China’s customs website was posted on May 14 and confirmed to be approved by the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS).

In coming weeks, APHIS and the US Grains Council (USGC) will work with Chinese officials to develop fumigation and industry best practices requirements, and the Council and barley industry will work to ensure potential exporters meet administrative requirements to sell to China.

“We are pleased to see China making strides to uphold their purchasing commitments under its Phase 1 agreement with the United States, and the fact it could once again position the US barley industry as a preferred supplier is even better news for US barley farmers,” USGC president and chief executive officer Ryan LeGrand said.

National Barley Growers Association (NBGA) president, Buzz Mattelin, said that particularly in light of supply disruptions from COVID-19, the new agreement would help barley farmers find new buyers for ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: Saskatchewan brewers asking for tax relief
Feeling the pinch of the province’s production levy, Saskatchewan brewers are asking for a bit of tax relief, Globalnews.ca reported on May 14.

Saskatchewan breweries currently pay more to produce craft beer than their counterparts in Alberta and Manitoba.

“A production tax is pretty common in the brewing industry; every province has one. The unfortunate thing is Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates. It’s almost double of our closest neighbours,” said Mark Heise, president of the Saskatchewan Craft Brewers Association and Rebellion Brewing Co.

While Saskatchewan breweries have been feeling additional financial pressure because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, lobbying the government to lower the tax has been a four-year effort.

“The government has never said ‘no’ or disagreed, but unfortunately we’ve never been able to make that change,” Heise said.

Saskatchewan locals have now joined the breweries in calling for a reduced tax, with over 1,300 people signing an online petition to help get the attention of the provincial government.

“The petition is a really cool thing and came from fans across Saskatchewan. That’s really why we decided to come out more publicly instead of [continuing] discussions behind closed doors,” Heise said.

“This should have been fixed four years ago.”

Producing up to 20,000 barrels of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Big Cat Brewing Company closing its doors for good
A popular Northern Michigan brewery is closing its doors for good.

Nikki and Aaron Ackley, owners of Big Cat Brewing Company in Cedar, announced plans to close for good on Tuesday after 14 years of business in the tourism hotspot of Leelanau County.

“After much consideration and deep soul searching, we have come to the conclusion that we will not be able to reopen and continue our business of 14 years,” a Facebook notice reads. “With now losing Memorial Day weekend and no guarantee of being able to open at full capacity this summer, it has become obvious to us that our business operations are no longer sustainable.”

“We are so very grateful for your patronage over the years and also for the terrific relationships we have formed with customers and employees. We are going to spend the summer reinventing ourselves and designing a plan to re-purpose our building in order to keep it. Again, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts and wish you well through these trying times.”

Opened in 2006 as the Cedar Rustic Inn, the restaurant became Big Cat Brewing in March 2016. Frequented by residents, tourists, and travelers to nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes, the brewery was ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Third Moon Brewing set to release its first beers on May 16
A new brewery that was announced last summer is set to release its first beers this weekend in Milton, a large town in Halton Region west of Toronto, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 14.

Third Moon Brewing is being launched by Steven Pilotto and Chris Steininger, who plan to “focus on the beers [they] love to drink – hazy IPAs, pastry stouts and fruited sours.”

The first two beers from the brewery – Cut Me Down (6.5% abv), “a golden quencher of an IPA made with Columbus then dry hopped with Sabro and Mosaic”, and Bone Tree (6.5% abv), “an all Citra IPA dry hopped with more Citra” – can be pre-ordered now via the Third Moon website, and will be available to pick up at the brewery this Saturday May 16th from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Additional beers will be released in a similar manner on a weekly basis while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

Third Moon Brewing is located at 295 Alliance Road, Unit 3 in Milton.

Brewery news USA, MN: Arbeiter Brewing Co. hopes to open sometime around July 1
In a time where local breweries are reeling because of the loss of taproom operations, announcing a new brewery seems like the kind of crazy thing that only a…craft brewer would do. And alas, a new brewery will soon rise in the old Harriet Brewing space off of Minnehaha Avenue and Lake Street in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Monthly reported on May 15.

Three Northern Brewer veterans—Juno Choi, Garth Blomberg, and Josh Voeltz—along with head brewer Aaron Herman have come together to launch Arbeiter Brewing Co. Aaron spent a lot of time at Town Hall Brewing, which is one of the most well-regarded brewing operations. They’ve been working to get this going since 2018. They’ve survived a government shutdown, a pandemic—you gotta believe in these guys!

What to expect? The initial plan is ales, lagers with a hefty dose of German influence.

Arbeiter isn’t opening until sometime around July 1. But! You can taste their beer right now at The Lab, this cool experimental space right on the border of Minneapolis and St. Paul. For the last couple weeks, it’s sat on their website as To Be Revealed “New Brewery” IPA #1. But it has a name and a label: Arbeiter Westküst IPA.

Brewery news USA, PA: Night Shift Brewing cancels Philadelphia expansion project
‘It wasn’t meant to be’: Night Shift Brewing has canceled its Philadelphia expansion project, Boston.com reported on May 13.

"The COVID-19 pandemic shook our business to the core, and obviously almost everything outside of it," said the brewery's founders.

It’s been a year of accomplishments for Night Shift Brewing. In March 2019, the Everett-based company opened an innovation brewery at Lovejoy Wharf while simultaneously launching a new coffee venture, Night Shift Coffee. A food truck followed, as did the introduction of their new hard seltzer, Hoot. Then there was the announcement that Night Shift was expanding into Philadelphia, building a $10 million-plus brewery and distributorship.

But the coronavirus pandemic had other plans: On Wednesday, May 13, Night Shift announced that it was pulling the plug on the Philadelphia expansion as a direct result of COVID-19.

In a letter posted to its website, founders Rob Burns, Mike O’Mara, and Michael Oxton shared that the current global health crisis no longer made the new project feasible.

“It is with great personal sadness that we at Night Shift Brewing have made the incredibly hard decision to cancel our Philly expansion project,” they wrote. “For over four years, we worked to find our second ‘forever home’ and plant roots ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: More than 100 Mexicans die of tainted alcohol as beer supply dries up
More than 100 people in Mexico have died from drinking adulterated alcohol over the past two weeks, according to a tally by Mexican daily newspaper Reforma on May 13, as measures to halt the coronavirus' spread have crimped beer production.

The potentially fatal bootleg alcohol contains dangerous substances such as methanol in some cases, and is being distributed as brewers such as Heineken and Grupo Modelo have suspended production in line with government directives to halt non-essential activity.

Local authorities have launched investigations to identify the suppliers, and urged citizens not to consume alcoholic drinks of unknown origin.

The fatalities, reported by states including Jalisco, Yucatan, Puebla and Morelos since the start of the month, appeared to spike after Mother's Day in Mexico on May 10, according to officials and local media reports.

The toll rose to 20 on May 13 in the municipality of Chiconcuautla in the central state of Puebla, a day after it declared a health emergency following 17 deaths from consuming tainted beverages. The local government said it had confiscated 200 litres (352 pints) of a local alcohol known as "refino" and was conducting studies to determine its contents.

In Yucatan, where local media reported a wave of deaths from the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Sanctuary Brewing Company to close in June, Oklawaha Brewing Company to open in its place
Sanctuary Brewing Company announced May 14 plans to close via a press release from owner Lisa McDonald.

Sanctuary will close in June and another brewery, Oklawaha Brewing Company, will open in its place, the release said. Oklahawa will be headed by Sanctuary Brewing co-owner and head brewer Joe Dinan.

Dinan plans to continue offering to-go beer at the brewery space, at 147 1st Ave. E., during the transition.

Meanwhile, Dinan will make a few physical changes to the brewery, with taproom reopening to coincide with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions on bars and restaurants.

McDonald closed the doors to Inconceivable Cafe, a vegan restaurant formerly located in the 1st Avenue space, in late March.

She said she's on the hunt for a new space for Sanctuary Brewing Company. The new location would need enough room to accommodate a restaurant, event space, animal sanctuary and classes from yoga to brewing tutorials.

McDonald still wants to carry on her advocacy work, including resurrecting a Kindness Wall she installed at the former Hendersonville space, where people left necessities like coats, hats, gloves and other helpful items for people in need.

She also founded Sweet Bear Rescue Farm, a sanctuary for neglected farm animals. SBRC is home to ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Trappist monks restart production of Westvleteren beer
Belgium is only cautiously beginning to emerge from its coronavirus lockdown and its bars and restaurants won't open until next month at least. But the prayers of a lucky few drinkers have nevertheless been answered, with the release of a new batch of perhaps the world's best and most exclusive beer, AFP reports.

The monks of the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus only sell their holy brew by appointment, to individual consumers, and until Thursday, May 14 their outlet was closed.

Belgium has had one of the highest per capita death tolls from the global coronavirus pandemic in the world, and rules for social distancing have been strict.

St Benedict's rules, however, say the monks must work to support themselves, and the Trappist Westvleteren beer is regularly voted among the world's best by fans.

On May 14, aficionados who reserved a slot online - and were willing to observe safety rules - were able to pull up to the monastery and pick up their quota.

Brother Godfried, of the order, explained the rules.

"At the red light they have to stop, so that there are only two or three people active here where the transaction takes place," he told AFP.

"We also work without cash and there's plexiglass."

Brewery news Australia: Australian bars to take first cautious steps towards reopening this weekend
Seven weeks after the coronavirus pandemic forced Australia’s pubs to close, bars will take their first cautious steps towards reopening this weekend in a momentous moment for a nation of beer drinkers, The Irish Times reported on May 15.

“The beers are here and the jobs are back,” said Michael Gunner, chief minister of Northern Territory, a region popularised by Crocodile Dundee, the beer-swilling hero played by Paul Hogan – a former face of Foster’s lager.

The Covid-19 shutdown hit hard in the Territory, where day-time temperatures rarely fall below 25 degrees and social life in rural communities typically revolves around a schooner, an Australian term for a 425ml glass of beer.

At the Noonamah Tavern, about 45km east of Darwin, people travel vast distances to grab a bite to eat, a few beers and catch up on the gossip, according to Tony Innes, the proprietor who also lays on rodeos near the bar.

“We are an integral part of the community and it’s fair to say a lot of locals are itching to get back in,” said Innes, whose bar reopened on Friday.

The hospitality industry has welcomed the lifting of closure orders in several states after just 14 new coronavirus cases were reported ...More info on site
