Brewery news Canada, NS: Propeller Brewing announces opening of its third location in Halifax
Propeller Brewing announced the opening of its third location this weekend in The Keep, a condo and retail development at the corner of Quinpool Road and Vernon Street in Halifax.

Set to open on Sunday May 17th, the new store be limited to can and bottle sales for now, with a growler station, taproom, and on-site pilot brewery all launching once COVID-19 restrictions are limited.

“It’s not quite the launch we had planned, but we’re excited to finally be able to open the Propeller Quinpool store with cans and bottles,” said owner John Allen in a statement. “We’ll also have our craft sodas and Windmill Craft Cocktails on sale.”

Propeller Quinpool will be open from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM daily, including Victoria Day holiday on Monday, May 18. All sales will be conducted with social distancing protocols in effect, and debit and credit payments only.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Kensington Brewing planning second location in Vaughan
Kensington Brewing has announced the opening of a second location in Vaughan, a suburban city just north of Toronto, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 15.

The new facility opened late last week in the space previously occupied by Lake Wilcox Brewing, which quietly closed earlier this year after operating there since October 2016.

As stated in the opening announcement on Facebook:

“It wasn’t our intention to open a second brewery in the middle of a global pandemic (definitely poor timing), but we’ve been working on this for over a year now & couldn’t keep it a secret any longer. You’ve been to our brewery, things are tight. In short, we just needed a little more space. Now we’ll be able to brew enough beer to….(here’s another bit of exciting info) return to the LCBO, work with more local restaurants & bars, and work on a few new recipes & projects.”

The announcement also notes that the company’s original Toronto location in its namesake Kensington Market “is still & will continue to remain our forever home (don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere).”

The new Kensington Brewing is located at 3-1033 Edgeley Blvd. in Vaughan, and is currently open for retail sales from 2:00 PM ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Fueled Farm Brewery hopes to open in Middleburg-area by next March
Already inundated with winery choices, Middleburg-area residents will have a second brewery to visit this time next year, the Loudoun Now reported.

Middleburg-area residents Scott Buzzelli, a partner at Middleburg Real Estate-Atoka Properties, and Brian Yarnal presented the Town Council on May 14 with their proposal to open the Fueled Farm Brewery about a mile east of the town limits on a 10-acre property just north of Rt. 50. The duo plans to begin construction on the taproom in late summer and open the brewery to the public by next March.

Yarnal said that Vanish Farmwoods Brewery Owner Jonathan Staples would manage Fueled Farm’s beverage production and farming while King Street Oyster Bar Owner Rick Allison would manage the food service via his food truck. He said an existing garage would be expanded to create the taproom and brewhouse, where they’ll brew some beer, while most of the production will take place at Vanish. Yarnal said that would keep the onsite structures small and allow customers more outdoor space.

He said they would offer eight menu items, two of which would be standard fare and six of which would be tapas-style plates. The two least ordered tapas plates would rotate every 60 days.

Brewery news USA, NJ: 902 Brewing opens its doors in the midst of the pandemic
After six years, 902 Brewing’s doors officially opened on May 12 in the midst of a pandemic. The rooftop deck may not be open nor the bar finished, but the founders are selling four-packs of beer for pickup at their location at 101 Pacific Ave in Bergen-Lafayette, the Jersey City Times reported.

902 is only the second brewery since Prohibition to call Jersey City home. Once finished, its rooftop will offer views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty on one side and views of vacant blocks that were once chromium danger zones on the other. Colby Janisch, founder and chief operating officer doesn’t know what’s going to be built on them.

More breweries?

“The more the merrier” he said, pointing toward Corgi Distillery on Distillery Drive down the street, so close it makes a brewer’s row plausible. “A distillery, a brewery, even a dispensary, why not?” Janisch mused.

Previously a “gypsy brewery,” 902’s road to a brick and mortar brewery was rocky. “Zoning variance, construction delays, permit delays, installation delays, you name it,” Janisch said.

The journey still isn’t complete. Though the brewery is functional, at this point customers can visit only the beer stand and peer into the ongoing construction of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Wild Parrot Brewing Company setting up new location in Pasadena
Pasadena residents John and Kirsten Jackson, owners of Wild Parrot Brewing Company, have announced they’re setting up a new location on East Colorado Blvd., and will share a renovated space with popular local hangout, Rosebud Coffee, Pasadena Now reported on May 18.

“Our years-long search for a brewery location has ended and we are extremely excited to announce that we will be making our home at 2304 E. Colorado Blvd.,” the Jacksons said in a post at www.wildparrotbrewing.com. “Our mission is to create a distinct, local brand that is respected equally for our great beer and relationship with our community and customers.”

Pasadena’s Hearing Officer will hear the application for a Conditional Use Permit in a public hearing Wednesday, May 20, via Zoom and telephone.

According to the Hearing Officer agenda, the Jacksons want the city’s permission to establish an Industry Restricted, Small Scale land use for the site, allow the on- and off-site sale and consumption of limited alcohol, and allow extended hours of operation.

Once established, the business will be called “Wild Parrot,” where the owners will make beer and run a tasting room within a 3,177 square-foot tenant space. Rosebud Coffee, the existing tenant, will remain and share the space.

Brewery news UK: Prospect of restrictions to pubs reopening major problem for brewing giants
On a typical Friday evening in May, the White Horse pub in London’s Brixton neighborhood might go through 20 or more kegs of lagers and ales as hundreds of revelers stand four and five deep at the bar and spill out onto the terrace into the wee hours, Bloomberg reported on May 20.

But with London in lockdown, the pub has been shuttered since March 20, when owner Matt Ward—knowing he had to empty the taps—offered happy-hour discounts and at the end of the evening started pouring pints for free. And he was one of the lucky ones: Some pub owners who couldn’t sell their beer had to dump it down the drain. Ward now worries that when he reopens this summer, social distancing guidelines will force him to cut occupancy by about 90%, to just 30 patrons. “I try to keep positive,” he says. “But to go anywhere back to anything like it was before, with social distancing, you just can’t do it in a pub like mine.”

The prospect of once-bustling pubs reopening as ghost towns is a major problem for brewing giants such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, Carlsberg, and Heineken. While Americans prefer to drink at home—carryout sales account ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: Brewers finally getting good news as sales show strong growth trends in four weeks to April 19
Heineken NV, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and other brewers are finally getting good news amid the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the closure of restaurants, bars and pubs in much of the world, Bloomberg reported on May 17.

Nielsen’s latest data in Europe for the four weeks ending April 19 shows strong growth trends, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., with an acceleration of the rise in the volume and value of beer across the region with the exception of Germany, because customers started drinking at home.

The recovery was particularly strong in the UK and Spain, fueled by pre-confinement supply, Goldman analysts led by Olivier Nicolai wrote in a report on May 15. The data shows that consumers also bought conventional or premium beers, easing concerns that they would buy cheaper beers given the difficult context, analysts said.

Heineken’s excellent performance in the UK continued with a 51.4% volume increase, where the Heineken and Birra Moretti brands were the main growth drivers, analysts wrote. AB InBev, meanwhile, continued to outperform in France, with strong growth in its Corona and Leffe beers.

Although this corresponds to just one month of figures, the data is encouraging and seems to point to the “dynamism” of ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo plays down reports of planned United Spirits delisting
Diageo, the world’s largest premium drinks group, is reportedly planning to delist its Indian division, United Spirits (USL), by buying out minority shareholders in a deal that could be worth about £2 billion, The Drinks Business reported on May 19.

An Indian TV channel said that Diageo had opened talks with advisers about buying out the 43.24 per cent of the shares it does not own. However, Diageo said on May 19 in London: “We never comment on market rumours”.

Sources close to USL had claimed the report was “speculation”.

Observers pointed out that while Diageo may one day wish to increase its stake in USL, the group has regularly welcomed the presence of minority shareholders in a number of locations such as China, Turkey and in Africa.

Diageo owns a 56.76% stake in USL with the remainder held publicly via USL stock market listing. USL is formally a subsidiary of Diageo, having been incorporated into the parent group’s structure.

At the present market price the outstanding 43.24 per cent of USL’s shares would cost Diageo about £1.7 billion, but holders would be likely to demand a premium, especially as the shares have been hit recently by the general fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic and ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand & Vietnam: Thai craft brewers find brewing easier in Vietnam
Factories are not the only business moving into Vietnam — Thai craft beer has found an unlikely home in the neighbouring country, thanks to stiff regulations that keep small players from entering the market back home.

Sporting very Thai names like Mahanakhon, Krung Thep and Khao San, Thai craft beers often appear foreign in their own country because of the obtrusive import sticker and "Made in Vietnam" (or a number of other countries) printed on the side of the bottle.

Thailand's creaky beer regulations stipulate that new players entering the market must brew at least 10 million litres of beer each year and have over 10 million baht in capital, an impossible bar for small brewers to enter the market and protecting the duopoly of ThaiBev, the maker of Chang, and Boon Rawd Brewery, which makes Singha and Leo.

While Thailand used to have a larger underground craft brewing scene, many have gone overseas to brew their beer legally after a few high-profile arrests by the Excise Department. And increasingly Vietnam is offering the best mix of price, quality and logistical options. After import tariffs, excise tax and cold storage shipping costs, many beers become unaffordable to the average consumer in Thailand.

Brewery news Ireland: Sales of alcohol outstrip increase in grocery purchases
Sales of alcohol in Ireland and the UK have outstripped the increase in grocery purchases sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, Independent.ie reported on May 18.

That is in marked contrast to Spain, Italy and France, where sales of alcohol have dramatically failed to match the surge in purchases of foodstuffs.

However, while sales of take-home alcohol have soared by 40pc in Ireland since the lockdown was enforced in March, overall alcohol sales are estimated to be down by 30pc due to the closure of pubs, clubs and restaurants.

In Belgium, supermarket sales of alcohol have only increased by 10pc.

One craft drinks producer, Daniel Emerson of Stonewell Cider, said that contrary to belief, not all drinks producers have enjoyed a sales boom because of the pandemic lockdown.

"Around 80pc of our business was through pubs and restaurants," he said.

"That market for us was literally wiped out almost two months ago. It was surreal - that is the only word for it."

The lockdown was a particularly cruel blow for the Cork cider firm, which was founded in 2010 by Mr Emerson and his wife Geraldine.

They had planned an ambitious series of events to mark their 10th anniversary, only to see the programme wrecked by the ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi, Kirin to jointly make alcohol disinfectant from unshipped beer
Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. have announced that they will jointly make alcohol disinfectant for medical institutions from draft beer that they have been unable to ship to restaurants and other establishments due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, The Mainichi reported on May 17.

As many eateries and bars have had to temporarily shut down or shorten their operating hours due to the spread of the virus, beer makers have been left with stocks they can't ship.

In early April, long-established sake maker Kiuchi Brewery Inc. in the city of Naka, Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, was asked to help tackle the shortage of alcohol disinfectant by the prefectural government.

Kiuchi Brewery then asked Asahi and Kirin, which have factories in Ibaraki, to provide stocks of beer. The two companies agreed that they should make use of their beverages rather than wait for their expiration dates, and brought in a total of 24,000 litres of draft beer to a distillery at the brewery.

Kiuchi Brewery plans to use the beer to make a 70% alcohol disinfectant, put the solution in 1,260-liter bottles, and donate the items to the prefectural government and four municipal governments in Ibaraki. The solutions will reportedly be used ...More info on site
