USA: More than half of America’s top 50 craft brewers posted volume growth in 2019
|
More than half of the top 50 Brewers Association-defined craft brewing companies posted volume growth in 2019, according to data published in the May/June edition of the not-for-profit trade group’s New Brewer magazine, Brewbound reported.
2019’s volume gains broke a streak of three consecutive years in which the majority of regional craft brewing companies — defined as those producing between 15,000 and six million barrels of beer annually — did not grow. In 2019, 27 of the top 50 small and independent breweries by volume posted positive volume growth, while 23 companies either declined or remained flat. In fact, regional breweries collectively posted 1% volume growth in 2019.
The total craft category, as defined by the BA, held steady at 4% volume growth in 2019, to a total of 26.3 million barrels. The growth number has hovered around 4% over the last three years, but continued growth remains uncertain due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the U.S. craft brewing industry.
The two largest craft breweries by volume in 2019 — D.G. Yuengling and Son and Boston Beer Company — both recorded volume declines in 2019. Yuengling’s nearly 2.7 million barrels were more than double Boston Beer’s estimated beer production of

Australia: Carlton and United Breweries giving away up to A$2 mln worth of beer to help pubs and clubs
|
One of Australia’s largest breweries is giving away up to A$2 million worth of beer in a bid to help pubs and clubs stave off closure, 7NEWS.com.au reported on May 28.
Carlton and United Breweries’ “For the Love of Your Local” campaign has already raised more than A$1 million for struggling venues.
It’s now doubling that target to A$2 million as restrictions continue to decimate the hospitality industry.
The brewery’s campaign asked punters to buy a beer from their local, with a free one set aside for them once restrictions lift, courtesy of CUB.
Doubling the goal to A$2 million is the equivalent of 200,000 pints or 100,000 litres of free beer.
CUB CEO Peter Filipovic said the ongoing easing of restrictions was welcome news, but there were still plenty of challenges.
“The ongoing restrictions will continue to significantly limit trade and, for some venues, re-opening will have to wait until restrictions are further lifted,” Filipovic said.
“Those that do will have reduced numbers.
“New South Wales pubs and clubs have already been shut for two months and the fact is many of these beloved venues won’t make it through this crisis without extra help.
“So, we’re calling on Australians to help save their local and get free beer

China: Australian barley imports continue to filter through
|
Chinese imports of Australian barley are continuing to filter through despite Beijing’s hefty tariffs on shipments, a move that could push up beer prices in the world’s largest consumer of the beverage, Bloomberg reported on May 28.
A cargo of Australian barley has docked at a Dalian port and is set to be unloaded, according to shipping data compiled by Bloomberg, the first such delivery after China imposed a more-than 80% anti-dumping and anti-subsidy tariff on the product. At least three more vessels carrying the commodity are also on course for China, data show.
China is continuing with purchases from its key trading partner because Australian barley is seen as being the best in quality among its suppliers, said Ma Wenfeng, an analyst with Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultant Co.
“Despite the high tariffs, some Chinese buyers have to take these shipments as beer makers prefer Australian barley, which is high quality and gives good taste,” Ma said. “These high-end brands can simply pass the cost to downstream consumers.”
Beijing hit Australia with the tariffs last week, saying the exporting nation was subsidizing the commodity and flooding China at the cost of local producers, an accusation Canberra denies. However, Beijing has a track record of

UK: Winter malting barley Electrum approved for brewing use
|
The top yielding winter malting barley variety Electrum has gained full approval for brewing use in the UK, the Farmers Weekly reported on May 29.
From breeder Syngenta, the two-row barley has been granted full approval by the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain in its annual review.
It joined the AHDB Recommended List back in 2018, and is the highest yielding winter malting variety on the list at 97% of the controls.
Electrum effectively replaces the other Syngenta winter malting variety, Venture, which has been removed from the list for brewing.
In the spring category, Asteroid has been removed from the list for both brewing and malt distilling, but retains provisional approval 2 for grain distilling.
Other changes are Cosmopolitan moving to provisional approval 2 for brewing, while both AHDB Recommended List newcomers Iconic and Splendor gained provisional approval 1 for brewing.
Both Firefoxx and Tungsten gained provisional approval 1 for malt distilling; the latter variety also has the same status for brewing.
Approved malting and distilling list for harvest 2021:
• Winter varieties for brewing use
Full approval: Flagon, Craft and Electrum
• Spring varieties for brewing use
Full approval: Concerto, Laureate, Planet and Propino
Provisional approval 2: Diablo and Cosmopolitan
Provisional approval 1: Iconic, Splendor and Tungsten
• Spring varieties for malt distilling use
