USA: More than 80% of US craft breweries received funding through the Paycheck Protection Program
|
More than 80% of the US craft breweries said they have received funding through the Paycheck Protection Program, and those loans are making many of them more confident about the future, according to the Brewers Association’ (BA) latest survey of how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting those businesses.
According to the BA’s survey of 869 craft breweries released on Friday, 84.9% of breweries applied for a PPP loan, 50.4% applied for emergency Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) grants and 38.7% applied for EIDL loans.
“Of breweries that applied for a PPP loan, 95.7% indicated they had received their funds, meaning that 81.2% of breweries who responded to this survey have received PPP loan funds,” BA chief economist Bart Watson wrote in his analysis of results.
Nevertheless, more breweries said they’re more optimistic about the future of their businesses, with 32.2% of the respondents responding that they were somewhat more optimistic and 10.2% were much more optimistic about the future compared to a month ago, when the BA conducted its second impact survey, which found that 46% of breweries wouldn’t last more than three months under the business climate caused by the shutdown of on-premise sales in an effort to stop the spread of

Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia share price slumps on profit miss
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd topped Bursa Malaysia's leading decliners on June 1 after its share price closed down RM2.70 or 9.35% at RM26.18 as investors weighed the company’s first quarter earnings miss and took cue from its dividend suspension. At 5pm, Carlsberg ended with a volume of 752,700 shares, The Edge Markets reported.
Carlsberg was traded between RM25.98 and RM27.98 on June 1. At its closing share price of RM26.18, the brewer has a market capitalisation of RM8 billion.
On Friday (May 29), Carlberg said net profit fell to RM72.96 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 2020 (1QFY20) from RM87.6 million a year earlier. Revenue declined to RM589.87 million from RM659.92 million, it said.
On June 1, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd analyst Gan Huan Wen said Carlsberg's core profit after tax and minority interest at RM73 million made up 25.1% and 25.7% of Hong Leong’s and consensus forecasts respectively.
"We deem this below expectations as 1Q is seasonally a strong quarter, typically making up ~30% of full year earnings. Additionally, we expect significantly weaker earnings in 2Q due to (the) MCO (movement control order). The shortfall in earnings was due to steeper-than-expected decline in sales from the Covid-19 outbreak.

World: Molson Coors suspends quarterly dividends, furloughs employees in Europe and North America
|
The Molson Coors Beverage Company has said that it has suspended quarterly dividends for fiscal 2020 and furloughed some employees in Europe and North America as it looks to save cash amid the coronavirus crisis, Hospitality Ireland reported on June 1.
Liquor companies are among the worst-hit from the fallout of the pandemic, as pubs and restaurants remain closed or are operating in limited capacity across the globe to curb the spread of the virus.
Molson Coors will also cut capital expenditure by approximately $200 million, reduce marketing expenses and limit the number of new hires, while also evaluating various European government liquidity programs.
Molson Coors Canada also suspended its regular quarterly dividends for fiscal 2020.

Ireland: Alcohol consumption falls by 35.6% in April 2020
|
New figures confirmed on June 2 that alcohol consumption has fallen in Ireland as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and the closure of the on-trade, with the total volume of sales down by 35.6% in April 2020 compared to April 2019, the Leitrim Observer reported.
The Nielsen data, released by Drinks Ireland, provides figures on the sale of beer and cider (Long Alcoholic Drinks) and spirits in Ireland, in both the on and off-trade.
They show that alcohol sales increased in the off-trade in April, but overall, the closure of the on-trade resulted in a fall in the total amount of alcohol consumed in Ireland.
Looking at beer and cider, the data shows that 24 million fewer pints were consumed in Ireland in April 2020, compared to April 2019. There was a 58% increase in the volume of beer and cider sold in the off-trade, but overall sales of beer and cider fell by 36% due to pubs being closed. It’s estimated that generally around 60% of beer and cider sales are in the on-trade.
The numbers on the sale of spirits show a similar trend, with 4.9 million fewer 35.5ml serves of spirits sold in April 2020 compared to the previous year. There

South Africa: South African form long queues to buy alcohol after sales ban lift
|
Long queues have formed outside shops selling alcohol in South Africa after restrictions on its sale, imposed two months ago as part of measures to fight Covid-19, were lifted, BBC reported on June 1.
Social media posts showed people, who had braved the morning chill, cheering as buyers emerged with their bottles.
The alcohol ban was to allow police and hospitals to better focus on tackling the coronavirus, the authorities said.
Alcohol-fuelled violence is a huge problem in South Africa.
Doctors and police say the ban has had a dramatic impact, contributing to a sharp drop in casualty admissions.
But the country's brewers and wine makers had complained that they were being driven out of business.
The government has also lost a fortune in tax revenue, reports the BBC's Andrew Harding in Johannesburg.
The authorities are now in the process of easing one of the toughest lockdowns in the world.
However, the planned reopening of schools has been delayed for a week.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said that from 1 June the sale of alcohol would resume, but only between 09:00 and 17:00 and not on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Also, the alcohol can only be drunk at home rather than where it was bought.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance

India: Growing demand for beer expected to boost demand for Australian malting barley
|
The growing demand for beer from the emerging middle class in India could see the subcontinental giant grow as a malting barley customer, the North Queensland Register reported on May 29.
India's own barley production varies between 1.75 million tonnes in 2018-9 to forecasts between 1.83 mln tonnes to 2.1 mln tonnes this year, with approximately 80 per cent used for feed and 20pc for the food market, including malting and brewing.
It currently imports barley from Argentina and France with potential for Black Sea trade.
In terms of a potential opening for Australian exports it will definitely be a focus on malting barley.
India has a maximum residue limit on glyphosate that would likely mean that Australian feed barley, which can be crop-topped with glyphosate for desiccation prior to harvest would not be accepted.
Barley is very much a small scale crop in India, making up a tiny fraction of the 150 million tonne rabi (winter) crop this year.
The heartland for the crop is the north western state of Rajasthan, which produces over 60pc of the national barley crop.
Much of the agriculture in the state, which includes the massive Thar desert is focused on grazing livestock on land too dry for reliable cropping.

UK: Norfolk’s grain stores struggling with huge surplus of malting barley
|
The closure of pubs and a slump in lockdown beer demand has created a huge surplus of malting barley in Norfolk’s grain stores – leaving farmers worried about where they are going to put this summer’s harvest, the Eastern Daily Press reported on May 29.
Maltsters said production is down by about 40pc across the board as demand for this key ingredient has been lost from cask brewers who supply the “on-trade” in pubs, restaurants and hotel bars.
As a result, grain stores are still full of last summer’s malting barley – and that could pose a major problem as the continued dry, hot weather means this season’s harvest could be only weeks away.
James Beamish, farm manager at the Holkham Estate in north Norfolk, said: “Our grain stores are still at capacity. We have got no malting barley coming out of the shed at all.
“Our main malting barley store holds 7,500 tonnes and there is way over 6,000 tonnes sitting in there at the moment.
“It is a very short supply chain and if people are not drinking beer, maltsters cannot move their malt, so we cannot move our barley. Being the primary producer at the start of the food chain, it stays
