Mexico: Brewing resumes in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey
|
Mexico’s beer industry resumed its production and distribution operations this Monday, June 1 only in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, sector sources confirmed to La Jornada.
Grupo Modelo has its production plant in Mexico City and operates at 25 percent of its capacity, while the Heineken brewery, which has it in Monterrey, resumed at 50 percent.
Production and distribution were also reactivated in Guadalajara, a city where both firms have industrial plants.
The brewers reactivated these processes with strict adherence to the safety instructions that the health authorities have set, in order to mitigate the Covid-19 infections.
In the other states of the Republic, indicated the sources consulted, the reactivation will take place when the local governments give the green light.
Since last April 5, the main breweries stopped operations throughout the country, as it was one of the measures adopted by the health authorities, since the industry was not considered essential activity in the outbreak of the new coronavirus.
Grupo Modelo operates 11 plants in Mexico, of which eight are industrial, two artisanal and one experimental. In addition, 10 are used for vertical operations (stained glass windows, malting plants, boats and small plates). USA, TX: Senate Avenue Brewing Company hoping to launch in Jersey Village in late June or early July
|
In his free time over the last two years, Jersey Village Mayor Andrew Mitcham has been working toward opening a brewery in his hometown. He said he plans to open Senate Avenue Brewing Company in late June or early July at the corner of Senate Avenue and Dillard Drive, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on June 2.
The Jersey Village native said he is excited to bring the city a unique business that can cater both to its retired population and to the growing demographic of young families moving to the area.
“I’ve been involved in the local community since I was a kid, and just over the years that I’ve been involved, there has always been a lack of quality restaurants and community gathering spaces,” he said.
What started as a vision for a small operation developed into something bigger over the last two years as Mitcham said he realized the need for this type of business in his neighborhood.
About five years ago, Mitcham founded a neighborhood group called Dads, Driveways and Drafts. He said as many as 50-100 dads in the Jersey Village area meet once a month in a local driveway to sample and bond over craft beers.

Canada: Molson Coors to eliminate about 190 jobs following move of Montreal brewery
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co. will eliminate about 190 temporary and permanent jobs in Quebec by the end of 2021 following its move to a new brewery complex south of Montreal, The Bridge River Lillooet News reported on June 2.
The company told employees on June 2 that the more automated facility being built in Longueuil will have new technologies that will improve its efficiency.
Molson says 87 permanent and 101 temporary employees will be affected over the next 20 months.
Teamsters union spokesman Stephane Lacroix says workers are in limbo because several details about the plant's restructuring still have to be clarified.
He says the union represents about 500 workers at the Montreal brewery and a distribution centre.

USA, NY: Heroes Brewing to take over Lost Borough Brewing’s space in Rochester
|
Like a lot of stories in Rochester, this one begins in the Wegmans beer aisle, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on June 2.
Dan Western offered to help Marlene Fagen pick out some beers for the craft-your-own six-pack. Western, the co-founder and brewer at Lost Borough Brewing in Rochester's Beechwood neighborhood, assisted Fagen and that sparked a "quick friendship," Fagen said.
So when Western and his co-owners were looking for a buyer for their brewery, they approached the Fagens. Lost Borough, 543 Atlantic Ave. in Rochester, will soon become Heroes Brewing.
"Dan and Marlene got talking about how we wanted to go down this path (toward brewery ownership)," said Greg Fagen, Marlene's husband. "Dan offered to help in any way he could."
"Amazing what relationships can be started at Wegmans," Marlene concluded.
The closing of Lost Borough has as much to do with life changes as it does with growing competition in the local beer scene.
When Lost Borough opened in 2014, there were just four breweries in Monroe County (Genesee, Rohrbach, Roc, Fairport, and Custom Brewcrafters). Today, that number stands north of 20.

Canada, BC: Shore Line Brewing now open in Kelowna
|
A new brewery and taproom more than 5 years in the making is now open in Kelowna’s Lower Mission neighbourhood, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 3.
Shore Line Brewing is situated in residential development The Shore, and soft opened last week with three house beers available – Shore Line Golden Ale (4.7% abv), The Wakesetter IPA (6.3% abv), and Shore Line Stout (5.3% abv) – along with other drinks, and a food menu featuring tacos, sandwiches, and other snacks and mains.
Shore Line Brewing is located at 3477 Lakeshore Road in Kelowna, and is currently open 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday to Wednesday, 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Thursday, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Sunday. COVID-19 protocols including limited capacity, one-way traffic flow, and physical distancing are in effect as per provincial guidelines.

USA, IA: Allerton Brewing Co. to become Buchanan County’s first brewery since Prohibition
|
Lucas Gray brewed his first batches of beer in a four-gallon stock pot on the kitchen stove as an Iowa State University student a decade ago.
This fall, Gray, now 31, and Brandon Mikel plan to open the first brewery in Buchanan County since Prohibition, The Gazette reported on June 4.
Named after a record-breaking racehorse, Allerton Brewing Co. hearkens back to Independence's history as a magnet for horse racing in the late 1800s.
Allerton broke the world's stallion record at Independence's kite-shaped racetrack in 1891.
The brewery, slated for a fall opening, plans to have five core beers and a rotation on tap. The facility also hosts an outdoor covered deck overlooking the river and an exposed 1871-original brick wall.
Gray said being the only brewery in Buchanan County will help them narrow their focus and offer hyperlocal beer.
"The more you stay local the more you can get direct feedback from your customers and the more you can really cater your beer to the local taste," Gray said.
Specifics of the brewery's opening plan, however, remain in flux as Gov. Kim Reynolds will allow breweries and distilleries to open at half capacity beginning May 28, to help contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Canada, ON: Waterloo Brewing invests C$13.4 mln in expansion and new can line installation
|
Waterloo Brewing Ltd., Ontario's largest Canadian-owned brewery, announced on June 2 a C$13.4 million investment in its facility to satisfy the upcoming volume demands of its rapidly growing business. The project will include expansion of its brewing and blending capacity as well as the installation of a new can line, Yahoo Finance reported.
"Our business has been experiencing significant growth over the past several years and we are investing to ensure that we can continue to satisfy the ongoing growth demand" stated George Croft, President and CEO, Waterloo Brewing. "The investment in capacity and capability is consistent with our very disciplined and strategic approach to capital and the return we expect."
"The landscape in beverage alcohol is changing so rapidly, and being able to develop, produce and sell an ever-increasing range of products is essential to success," continued Croft. "In our state-of-the art facility we're able to produce almost every style of beer, ciders, coolers, seltzers, and any other beverage the market might demand. We can do that both efficiently and with the highest quality standards."

USA, LA: Crying Eagle Brewing converts to microbrewery
|
Crying Eagle Brewing announces they have converted to a microbrewery, Brewbound reported on June 4.
This move will allow Crying Eagle to expand their beverage offerings in their taproom to include wine, spirits, and cocktails. Additionally, this move will also require they give up distribution of their brands in the state of Louisiana.
“Over the recent months, we have really put a lot of time and energy into deciding where our future is for this business and this industry,” said Eric Avery President of Crying Eagle Brewing. “We just feel our brands and our future are best built from the inside out…our taprooms.”
In addition to wines, spirits and cocktails, Crying Eagle also offers a wide variety of unique beer infused beverages like beer cocktails, beer daiquiris, and will now be offering guest taps for collaborate brews with local homebrewers and other breweries throughout Louisiana.
“It’s always been our goal to have the world experience Crying Eagle Brewing” said Fran Avery, Vice-President of Crying Eagle Brewing. “Expanding our beverage offerings will cater to those who’ve always wanted to visit our establishment, but simply don’t like beer”

Thailand & Australia: Severe drought in Thailand could provide boost to Australian barley shipments
|
Severe drought in Thailand in the first five months of 2020 has adversely affected the production of off-season (dry season) rice and corn, primarily due to a lack of irrigation water as reservoirs are critically low, Grain Central reported on June 2.
This will decrease the country’s exportable surplus of rice and potentially increase demand for imported wheat and barley in the 2020/21 marketing year.
The area planted to dry-season crops fell 36 per cent to 1.4 million hectares relative to the 2018/19 crop year, after historically low precipitation during the 2019 monsoon led to record low water storage inflows late last year. Consequently, production of off-season rice and corn are forecast to decline by 41pc and 25pc respectively compared to the previous season.
Total 2019/20 rice production is forecast at 18 million tonnes (Mt), 14.8Mt in the wet-season production cycle and 3.2Mt in the dry-season window. This is the second-lowest level of production in the last ten years after a severe drought in the 2015/16 season slashed output to 15.8Mt.

EU: Up to a million of pre-paid beers waiting for consumers as soon as bars reopen
|
As bars across Europe gradually reopen, up to a million free or pre-paid beers are waiting to lure back wary consumers, WHTC News reported on June 4.
Beer makers from global giant Anheuser-Busch InBev to smaller craft brewers have set up schemes for consumers to buy drinks in advance to support shuttered bars with, in some cases, the reward of free beer when the doors reopen.
AB InBev launched its first scheme "Cafe Courage" in Belgium and has since sold over 200,000 Stella Artois, Jupiler and other brands. It also started similar schemes in 20 other markets across Europe and from Brazil to Hong Kong, raising over $6 million for pubs, bars and restaurants.
World number two Heineken put the number of drinks sold through its various voucher schemes at 270,000.
Now the bars are opening, consumers have had their first chance to redeem coupons or vouchers.
Danish friends Arendse Rohland and Thomas Hoffner Lovgren were among those to profit from free beers after bars re-opened there on May 18.

India: Karnataka allows brewing fresh batches of beer for off-premise consumption
|
The Karnataka government has allowed microbreweries to brew fresh batches of beer for off-premise consumption, Livemint reported on June 2.
The order permitting fresh batches comes about a fortnight after the state excise department allowed microbreweries to sell their existing stocks in order to mitigate the losses incurred in the Covid-19 induced lockdown.
The notification states that permission is accorded to microbreweries “for fresh brewing/production and sale of beer till 30-6-2020, or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
The relaxing of restrictions is part of the B.S.Yediyurappa-led government’s plans to permit reopening of businesses and activities to help revive the economy. The state government had been particular about resuming liquor sales to help bring in some cash inflows to mitigate the acute fund crunch.
Karnataka cashed in on pent up demand after liquor sales were allowed from 4 May and since clocked ₹2146.48 crores. The excise revenue is Rs1387.20 crore, according to information by the department.
Even hotels and restaurants were allowed to sell their stock at MRP (maximum retail price).

Mozambique: CDM’s Beira brewery forced to cut production by 40%
|
The closure of bars and of market stalls selling alcoholic drinks, under the state of emergency regulations, has forced CDM (Beers of Mozambique) in the central city of Beira to cut its production by 40 per cent, the Beira daily paper "Diario de Mocambique" reported on June 2.
CDM commercial manager Edgar Chissano told the paper that before the coronavirus pandemic, the Beira brewery was producing at full capacity.
But demand from the bars and stalls accounted for almost half the brewery's output. They have been closed down because of the fear that the crowds they attract may provide fertile grounds for the spread of Covid-19.
People can still drink alcohol in restaurants, and can buy beer to take home in shops and bottle stores. But they cannot drink in the markets and on the streets.
Despite the fall in production, CDM has promised to continue to pay its workers normally, and to ensure continuity of production. It is implementing a shift system, rotating its workers so as to ensure the social distancing that provides a measure of protection against the coronavirus.

World: Dolf van den Brink assumes office as CEO of Heineken
|
Heineken has announced that Dolf van den Brink assumed office as the CEO and chairman of the executive board of the company on 1 June, ESM reported.
He has been a part of the company for 22-years and succeeds Jean-François van Boxmeer in the role.
Most recently, van den Brink served as the head of the company’s Asia Pacific division.
He has been instrumental in building high performing teams in both developed and developing markets
Commenting on his new role, van den Brink, said, “I feel humbled and honoured to follow in the footsteps of Jean-Francois van Boxmeer and I look forward to build on his impressive legacy.
“We are living in a time of intense disruption and impact for all of us. I feel deep sympathy, compassion and pride how we all are taking care of each other and adapting to new ways of working. Together with the executive team, I am confident that we will successfully navigate this crisis, while building a bright future.”
In February of this year, the brewer announced his appointment as a successor to van Boxmeer.

Thailand: People and organizations involved with craft beer summoned by authorities for posting photos of beer on social media

More than 400 people and organizations involved with the craft beer business have been summoned by regulatory authorities in Thailand for posting photos of the brew on social media, The National Herald reported on June 4.
Six craft beer associations jointly lodged a complaint with the House of Representatives’ Public Health Commission on June 4 arguing that the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, which bars the display of alcohol for promotional purposes, is unclear and violates their right to communicate with customers.
A representative of the beer associations says violations of the act are punishable by a 50,000-500,000 baht fine ($1,580-15,800) and a one-year jail term.
The complainants say their businesses have suffered from measures to combat the spread of the coronarivrus that included a ban on the sales of alcoholic beverages, the closing of bars and a curfew. A curfew beginning at 11 p.m. is still in effect.
The associations' representative, Supapong Preunglampoo asserts the industry helps Thailand’s economic growth and said, “There are many people working in this sector struggling to survive here.”
