Brewery news USA, WA: No-Li Brewhouse planning new production facility in Spokane
No-Li Brewhouse is expanding its presence in Spokane with plans for a new production facility and taproom that could host tours, craft beer tasting, education, and community events, The Spokesman-Review reported on June 9.

No-Li Brewhouse co-founder John Bryant said he’s looking for a site near downtown and the Spokane River to build the 30,000 to 50,000-square-foot regional production facility, which could create nearly 100 jobs, and put Spokane on the map as a craft beer destination.

“It has always been our vision to create a craft beer epicenter,” Bryant said.

The facility would allow No-Li to consolidate its production and brewing facilities under one roof, and conduct more research and development of its beers. It would also compliment No-Li’s existing brewery at 1003 E. Trent Ave., which would remain in operation, Bryant said.

“Our pub will stay where it is at by Gonzaga (University). We will continue to brew, research and develop beer there,” Bryant said. “This will be a supplemental production facility with taproom, tours and outreach into the community that will complement other breweries and bring people to the area.”

Bryant has obtained bank financing for the project, which could cost $5-$8 million, depending upon the property location and if the facility ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Off-premise beer sales top $1 bln during week ending May 30
Off-premise beer category sales topped $1 billion for the second consecutive week, which included the Memorial Day holiday, according to the latest one-week data slice shared by market research firm Nielsen, Brewbound reports.

For the week ending May 30, beer category scans in Nielsen tracked channels increased 18.2%, to $1,062,451,981. That total was just $28 million behind beer category sales during the July 4 holiday week in 2019, the firm reported.

Week-over-week sales of beer, FMBs and cider increased 2.4%, making beer the only alcohol category — and one of the few consumer goods categories — to grow sales compared to the prior week. Danelle Kosmal, Nielsen VP of the Beverage Alcohol Practice, called the week ending May 30 among the “slowest growth weeks since March.”

The deceleration of off-premise growth trends was expected as some bars and restaurants have begun reopening on-premise service across the country.

Nielsen also offered a review of the two weeks of off-premise sales encompassing the Memorial Day holiday period, as beer category dollar sales topped $2 billion, an increase of $344 million (or 19.6%) compared to the same two-week period in 2019.

Beer category dollar sales are up 17.3% year-to-date through May 31, according to Bump Williams Consulting (BWC), ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub purchased by Cooper Mountain Ale Works
Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub in Tigard, OR has been purchased by Cooper Mountain Ale Works who plans to reopen the restaurant soon, newschoolbeer.com reported on June 8.

Cooper Mountain Ale Works (CMAW) is a Beaverton, Oregon nano brewery founded by tech pros turned homebrewers Dan Antal, Chris Sjolin, and Aaron Fastenow. Along with their wives Miriam Pike and Christine Sjolin, and new partner and operations manager Eli Smith, they have purchased the 13 year-old Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub southwest of Portland.

“I honestly doubt there has been a group of founders with our level of passion coupled with broad capability to execute foolish enough to take on a project like this,” says Cooper Mountain Ale Works co-founder and head brewer Chris Sjolin. “We cooperate, coordinate, and dream so well together. It’s going to be an incredible next step on our journey.”

Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub has been a staple of the southwest Portland craft brewing scene since 2007 with an assortment of veteran brewers at the helm over the years. Recently, Max’s owner Marvin Bowen decided it was time to retire and privately had put the brewpub up for sale, though it remained in operation until late March of this ...More info on site

Barley news USA, MT: COVID-19 creating some real hardships for barley growers
Like other sectors of agriculture, barley growers have been dealt a major blow this spring because of the coronavirus. Lola Raska is the Montana Grain Growers Association’s Executive Vice President and explains why, KTVQ Billings News reported on June 8.

“The closure of bars and restaurants and cancellation of sporting events and festivals and things where large crowds gather has really affected demand for malting barley products,” said Rasak. “Beer in particular. That's caused some of the companies to reach out to growers and it's backed up the supply chain and so there isn't the need for malt barley.”

She says COVID-19 is creating some real hardships for barley growers.

“Some of the companies have canceled contracts, some they've made that offer to their growers to say, you know, if you want to continue with your contract, we'll see what you can do or we'll let you out of the contract for 2020,” said Raska. “In addition, Malteurop here in Great Falls has shut down for the time being. So, they're not taking delivery of any more malting barley. Some growers still have 2019 barley in their bins and were told not to expect an opportunity to deliver that until possibly 2021 and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: MPH Brewing already open in downtown Montgomery
A new brewery has cropped up in downtown Montgomery over the spring, the Cincinnati CityBeat reported on June 8.

MPH Brewing, located at 7880 Remington Road, opened up on May 21 and serves over a dozen of their own craft beers, select wines, and a menu that is in the process of expansion through head chef Mark Mayhall. In addition to their spacious taproom, their space also offers patio seating and an outdoor beer tent.

But a brand that you may be familiar with will soon be sharing taps alongside MPH brews.

Brewery general manager Jim Christmann and co-founder and president of Colorado-based Left Hand Brewing Eric Wallace are both Cincinnati natives — and cousins. And they're teaming up to offer a taste of the wild west in suburban Ohio.

"We think this partnership is a great opportunity to showcase Left Hand’s beers here in Cincinnati, some of which previously could only be found in their Colorado taproom, and bring together offerings from two independent craft breweries under one roof,” said Christmann in a press release.

Several of Left Hand Brewing's award-winning beers will be on tap at the Montgomery brewery beginning June 12, alongside their own.

“We’re excited for the opportunity ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Devil May Care Brewing moving operation to Torque Brewing in Winnipeg
Two years after launching with nano-brewing system installed at the Stone Angel Brewing facility, Devil May Care Brewing is moving its operation to another Winnipeg brewery in order to increase production, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 4.

In a statement posted on June 3 on social media, owners Colin Koop and Steve Gauthier announced that they will be relocating to Torque Brewing, and plan to start brewing there later this month.

While the move is underway, remaining stock of Devil May Care’s core and seasonal brands will be sold at Stone Angel and retail outlets until supplies are depleted, and small batch experimental beers brewed on a pilot system will be available in cans at Stone Angel.

The Torque-brewed versions of Devil May Care beers are expected to be available sometime in July.

Brewery news USA, MI: Handmap Brewing preparing for soft opening in Battle Creek
Chris McCleary is paying homage to his hometown of Battle Creek, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported on June 5.

The co-owner and head brewer of Handmap Brewing previously worked at Chicago's Goose Island Brewery, where he came up with a process for flavoring a beer with Froot Loops.

"I told the guys I could do that. And there's brewer's code: you don't just make beer out of everything, or you'll be kind of laughed at a little bit," McCleary recalled. "I said, 'You can only get away with that if you are from Battle Creek. I can do whatever I want when it comes to cereal.'"

When Handmap Brewing introduced five barrels of the beer flavored by the Kellogg Co. cereal in May, "Two Can Mash" were packaged in four-pack of 16 oz cans at a cost of $22.

They sold out within 20 minutes.

"It was a little fun thing when we started out, but you don't know everybody is going to dig that beer," McCleary said. "That's one of the most asked for beers that we make. I don't know if that's because we're in Battle Creek or because the beer is good."

The next batch of Two Can Mash was being kegged on ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: Petition asks Saskatchewan government to drop beer production levy
A Saskatchewan craft brewery fan started a petition asking the province to scrap the beer production levy, CBC.ca reported on June 7.

Craft breweries in Saskatchewan pay the government for every litre of beer they make. The more they produce, the more breweries pay.

Alysia Johnson, a self-described fan of the provincial craft brewery industry, recently started the petition.

Johnson said it was created to unite people who support local business and craft breweries to lobby the government to scrap the production levy.

"The production levy doesn't really have anything to do with sales or consumption or profits of the business. It's just an extra tax to brew the beer," she told CBC Radio's Saskatchewan Weekend.

"Ours actually happens to be one of the highest in the country and almost double that of our neighbouring provinces."

Johnson said the sums are small to the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), but to craft breweries the levy can make a big difference.

Mark Heise, president of Rebellion Brewing in Regina, said the beer production levy cost about C$80,000 last year, and the company is on track to spend about C$100,000 this year on it.

"Some folks might say, 'well, you should have to pay that because ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Bad Dream Brewing announces permanent closure
A New Milford brewery has closed its doors permanently as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown. Bad Dream Brewing announced its closure on a Facebook post on June 8.

The staff said, "The challenges of running a taproom focused brewery in these uncertain times has put us in a tough position, and after a series of setbacks and much debate, we have made the very hard decision to shut our doors permanently. We are so grateful to have had this opportunity and we can't thank you all enough. Thank you to the Town of New Milford, fellow brewers, industry partners, and most of all our patrons. It was a fun ride and an absolute pleasure to brew for you."

The small brewery and taproom in the Fairfield Plaza Shopping Center on Route 7 had a very unique atmosphere, as the owners were all avid horror book fans. The taproom felt like part brewery and part bookstore, with many shelves of books, particularly books in the horror genre. They even had a Sunday morning book club series where horror novelists would come in to discuss their works. Likewise, their beers had creative, horror themed names such as "Detached Headspace" stout, "Weasel ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Brewers Association calls for beer excise freeze
The Brewers Association has called for the Australian government to freeze excise in advance of the next scheduled increase, due in August, Australian Brews News reported on June 9.

The statement calling to ‘put a cap on Australia’s beer tax’ from the peak body representing the interests of CUB, Lion and Coopers, described the price of a beer in Australia as ‘already over-the-top’.

“Now is not the time to be ramping up taxes on consumers,” Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said yesterday in a media release.

“With more and more Aussies out of work and everyone counting their pennies, jacking up beer tax would be another blow to punters and publicans, alike.

“August 1 is the deadline for averting the next hip-pocket slug to Australians doing it tough.”

“Tax accounts for 42% of the price of a stubby. On a typical A$52.00 carton, A$22.05 goes to the taxman. When it comes to taxing a drink, Aussies pay the fourth highest beer tax in the industrialised world.

“We’re not asking for a tax cut at this time … just don’t increase the tax. That would spare punters further pain, take pressure off hospitality venues and, because it’s revenue neutral, won’t cost Treasury a cent.

“Putting up ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Tax increase on beer from sorghum, cassava or millet could result in loss of up to 330 thousand jobs
Kenya Treasury’s proposal to increase the tax on beer made from sorghum, cassava or millet will result in the loss of up to 330,000 jobs as demand drops due to a price hike of the affordable beer, distributors of Senator Keg have said.

The distributors and the Pubs and Restaurants Association of Kenya (PERAK) said the proposal by the Treasury would deal a damaging blow to efforts to reduce the number of drinkers taking illicit alcohol, The Standard reported on June 5.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, they said the proposal made public last week was also ill-timed, as the industry is already reeling from the effects of the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The proposal by your office will lead to an increase in the retail price of Keg beer at a time when we have observed a massive increase in illicit brew consumption due to closure of bars and a severely depressed economy affecting the daily wage economy,” they said in their submission to the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Ukur Yatani.

Thuku Kariuki, the spokesman for the Keg distributors, said the ripple effect of the tax would be devastating to their trade and would result in ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Suntory Holdings predicts 20% of bars and restaurants could fail due to coronavirus pandemic
Takeshi Niinami, the head of Japanese drinks and food group Suntory Holdings and a government adviser, predicted on June 5 that more than 20% of bars and restaurants could fail due to the coronavirus pandemic, WHTC News reported.

Japan's vibrant dining scene, from tapas style izakaya pubs and restaurants to Tokyo's high-end eateries boasting the largest number of Michelin stars of any city, mostly shut down in April as the government declared a state of emergency.

Even with the emergency status lifted, many restaurants are reopening with caution and with limiting seating and opening hours as customers remain wary of dining out. Niinami said he feared the country's eating-out culture could be hurt for good.

"If you ask me how much will return, I'd say roughly, around 80% will be back," Niinami, an economic adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government, told Reuters in an interview.

Niinami said that while the government's $1.1 trillion extra spending package approved last month was substantial, the government needed to be ready to provide more if a second wave of infections were to hit.

"I think it would be good to have 80% of them return, although of course I really want 100% back," he said. "Given the current ...More info on site
