Barley news Canada & USA: General weather situation benign for barley planting and crop in both countries
Early estimates for crop 2020 are: Canadian acreage 2.95 mln ha, production 10.15 mln tonnes. U.S. production as per USDA 3.96 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.

In spite of occasional frost/snow/dryness problems, the general weather situation was benign for barley planting and crop development to-date in both countries. Particularly in southern Alberta heavy rains ended a year-long drought.

Export estimates for 2020/21 are 1.9 – 2.0 mln tonnes for Canada and 120 thousand tonnes for the USA. Registered Canadian exports in Aug/March 2019/20 were 1.037 mln tonnes to China, 340 thousand tonnes to Japan and 33 thousand tonnes to the U.S.

China has authorized imports of U.S. barley. However, neither crop size, price levels nor logistics should enable the U.S. to use this outlet to a larger extent, the Gauger analysts said. Canada has sold to China between 1.5 and 2.0 mln tonnes of barley per year, Chinese maltsters appreciate the quality. Following the closure of the Chinese market for Australian barley, Canadian exporters hope to increase their volume by at least half a million tonnes in 2020/21.

Brewery news USA: Brewers bringing fewer new products to market amid coronavirus pandemic
Brewers are bringing fewer new products to market amid coronavirus concerns and a slowing economy, according to Sovos ShipCompliant label registration data for the months of April and May 2020, indicating these producers are doubling down on their existing product lines, wineindustryadvisor.com reported on June 15.

Overall, producers and wholesalers in the beer, wine and spirits business registered 16,164 products through Sovos ShipCompliant’s Product Registration Online (PRO) system, while many bars, retailers and tasting rooms remained closed due to stay-at-home orders. This represents a drop of 2% over February and March and a 0.3% decrease year-over-year.

However, brewers felt the decline most sharply with 43.4% fewer new product registrations in April and May compared to the same time last year.

“The closure of tasting rooms beginning in mid-March left many industry producers struggling to make ends meet. Breweries, in particular, appear to have rallied around their core products rather than investing in seasonal or limited releases, as a way to cut costs,” said Larry Cormier, vice president, general manager of Sovos ShipCompliant. “Craft beer innovation takes place in the taproom. With limited retail shelf space, many newer brewers focus on taproom sales rather than traditional distribution. So when tasting rooms ...More info on site

Hops news USA, WA: Hop growers curtailing expectations of modest growth as beer drinking shifts
Growing conditions are strong on Washington hop farms but growers are curtailing expectations of modest growth as beer-drinking patterns shift and an entire industry is disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, tricitiesbusinessnews.com reports.

The unknowns mean 2020 will look a lot like 2019, when the National Agricultural Statistics Service said Washington growers produced about 82 million pounds of hops with a collective value of $476 million.

75 percent of the U.S. hop crop, with about 50 percent to 60 percent exported in a typical year.

Whether hops are shipped overseas or remain on U.S. soil, the destination is invariably the same: a brewery.

“Hops are grown for beer and that’s it,” said Jaki Brophy, spokeswoman for Hop Growers of Washington, with offices in the Yakima area. Brewers consume 99 percent or more of all hops produced.

A fraction is used in one-off products such as hop-infused teas and candies.

But as the brewery industry goes, so goes the hops industry. And the brewing industry is struggling along with the rest of the economy after pandemic-inspired stay-home orders closed restaurants, taphouses, and sports and entertainment venues.

The National Beer Wholesalers Association in Alexandria, Virginia, said increased in-home consumption has not offset the sales for on-premises consumption. Major beer-drinking events, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer sales fall just short of three-peat during first week of June
After back-to-back billion dollar sales weeks in off-premise retailers, beer category sales fell just short of a three-peat during the first week of June, Brewbound reported on June 15.

For the week ending June 6, off-premise beer category dollar sales increased 22.1%, to $998.4 million, according to market research firm Nielsen.

Beer category dollar sales in the two-week period covering the lead up to and the week of Memorial Day topped $2 billion, an increase of $344 million compared to the same two-week period in 2019. Those weeks were rivaled only by the July 4 holiday week in 2019 during the last 52 weeks, Nielsen reported.

Through the weeks covering the COVID-19 period in the U.S., from early March through early June, the beer category has totaled $12.8 billion in off-premise sales, up $2.3 billion (or 21.4%) compared to the same period in 2019, Nielsen VP of beverage alcohol practice Danelle Kosmal told Brewbound.

Year-to-date off-premise dollar sales of beer, FMB and cider are up 15.4% compared to 2019.

Even as off-premise sales have spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down essentially all on-premise sales in the U.S., the growth hasn’t been enough to make up for the loss of sales in bars, restaurants ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Panther Creek Brews set to open at noon on June 20
Although COVID-19 put a kink in plans, Panther Creek Brews is finally set to open at noon Saturday, June 20, at 714-F W. Main St., Murfreesboro, former home to the Green Dragon Pub and Brewery, The Daily News Journal reported.

Co-owner JT Gowen said the company wants to be mindful of social distancing guidelines. So this weekend will be a soft opening and can release for Dedication IPA.

“We hope everyone can bear with us. This is the first time we’ve ever done this,” said Gowen, admittedly nervous about opening in the middle of a pandemic. “But we are excited and hopeful, and we’ll try our best to make sure everybody is happy.”

Gowen said they are focusing more on pickup and to-go orders. But the taproom will be open at 50% capacity. My Roots Curbside Catering will be the food truck on site, and there will be a few tents for customers to shelter from the sun.

Panther Creek Brews originally started with Gowen and Jeremy Taylor. The two men began brewing together in 2003 as a way to “hang out and get the families together.” It wasn’t long before they joined the Mid State Brew Crew, a hobby brewing club.

Brewery news USA, OH: Third Eye Brewing Company opening its doors in Cincinnati on June 17
Tom Collins had envisioned opening a brewery in his mind’s eye for nearly a decade. But the dream of the former product designer and avid homebrewer laid dormant for years. It took the realization that one can’t will a dream into existence without taking action for Collins to engage partners and get to work on making it a reality, Cincinnati.com reported on June 16.

“Life is short,” said Collins, cofounder of Third Eye Brewing Company. “You could always say, ‘I’m going to go and do this someday,’ but what if someday doesn’t come?”

“Someday” has finally arrived for Collins and his fellow Third Eye Brewing Company co-founders, opening their doors on June 17. After more than four years of preparation, Third Eye seems poised to become an overnight success.

Sharonville’s first craft brewery, Third Eye enjoys a host of advantages. Its Chester Road location is right across the street from the Sharonville Convention Center and near several high-volume hotels. A patio with direct access to the brewery’s main bar via roll-up garage doors spans the building’s street-facing side to project a fun, airy, vacation-like atmosphere.

The energy doesn’t stop at the building’s entrances. Vivid colors leap from the mural behind the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Vast quantity of beer gone past its sell-by date another problem resulting from coronavirus pandemic
In the concert halls, stadiums and bars across the U.S. that have fallen silent during the coronavirus pandemic, an unusual problem has emerged: what to do with the vast quantity of beer that’s gone past its sell-by date, Bloomberg reported on June 16.

In March, even before the lockdowns became widespread, about 10 million gallons of beer held by retailers had already expired, according to estimates from the National Beer Wholesalers Association. As thousands of kegs are now being returned to distributors daily, Vanguard Renewables in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is among companies seeking to make use of it by turning the beverage into natural gas for electricity generation. Others will use it to make hand sanitizer, but a great deal of the beer will simply be decanted and dumped.

“This is a tsunami of kegs,” said John Hanselman, chief executive officer of Vanguard, which will take about 60,000 gallons a week to feed expired beer to micro-organisms in biodigestors that release methane, the primary component of natural gas.

Coping with a waste of beer is just one of the many unforeseen knock-on effects of pandemic-related lockdowns that have shut down swathes of the global economy.

The headache for the beer industry goes beyond lost revenue, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Magnotta Brewery announces closure of Grand River Brewing in Cambridge
Just under two years after taking it over, Magnotta Brewery has announced the closure of Grand River Brewing in Cambridge, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 15.

According to a statement released last week, the ongoing impact of COVID-19 combined with “a growing number of unexpected obstacles in operating this property” combined to make the closure necessary.

Production of Grand River brands including Curmudgeon IPA, Plowman’s Ale, Red Tail Ale and others has been shifted to the Magnotta facility in Vaughan, where they are being brewed alongside the Magnotta beer and cider line-ups. The statement also notes that the brewery “hopes to be back in Cambridge in a new form down the road.”

Grand River Brewing was opened in June 2007 by Bob Hanenberg and Jane Southgate, and was located in a historic building built in 1913 as a factory for the Galt Knife Company. It was put up for sale in 2017, and was purchased by Magnotta in the summer of 2018.

Brewery news India: Delhi government withdraws corona fee imposed on alcohol
The overcrowding outside liquor shops during the COVID-19 pandemic has scared the Indian authorities. But seeing the declining economy government decided to impose a tax on liquor to boost sales revenue. Back in the month of May, the Kejriwal government imposed a 70% corona fee on the MRP of different types of liquor. Due to this by the end of May the excise department witnessed a total revenue of Rs 234 crore from the sale of liquor, Inventiva reported on June 15.

However, the Delhi government has now decided to withdraw the special corona fee imposed at 70% on the MRP placed on the sale of all types of liquor in the capital. The order came into effect from June 10 onwards. Within 15 days after imposing the corona fee tax on liquor, the Kejriwal government earned around 110 crore from this tax.

Considering past trends alcohol consumption in India amounted to about 5.4 billion litres in 2016, increasing to about 6.5 billion litres by 2020. This steady increase in consumption of these beverages can be directly attributed to multiple factors including the rising levels of disposable income and a growing urban population among others.

In India, several state governments either control liquor ...More info on site

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd has been told to pay RM6.36 million to the Customs Department as a full and final settlement on its bill of demand for sales tax and excise duty, The Edge Markets MY reported on June 15.

As a result, it said the financial impact of the settlement represents approximately 2.2% and 4.1% of the group's net earnings and net assets, respectively, for the year ended Dec 31, 2019.

In a filing, Carlsberg said it received on June 15 a letter dated June 3, 2020 from the Royal Malaysian Customs of Selangor notifying the company of its decision regarding the company's appeal for remission of the bill of demand dated Sep 17, 2014.

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro enjoying heyday for the first time in 10 years
Korean liquor brand Hite Jinro Co. is enjoying its heyday for the first time in 10 years in sales and stock price thanks to a double homerun with Terra beer and soju Jinro whose clean taste mixed with nostalgic marketing style created a splash in the world’s best-selling spirit, the Pulse News reported on June 15.

Hite Jinro revisited above 40,000 won for the first time since Jan. 5 2010 to close Friday, June 12 2.7 percent up at 40,200 won ($33.08).

On June 15, Hite Jinro shares rose 1.99 percent additionally to finish at 41,000 won.

Its new beer brand Terra has been enjoying a solid sale on the back of the skyrocketing popularity of a mixture of Terra and Chamilsul soju called Tesla (Tesula, Terra+Chamisul). Hite Jinro shares more than doubled in just 15 months since it first released Terra on March 21, 2019. Terra sold 860 million bottles by the end of May, shaking up the nation’s beer market. Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev launches new Victoria beer
AB InBev has launched a new beer, with a marketing story that attacks Duvel beer head-on, The Brussels Times reported on June 8.

The new beer, called “Victoria” is a blond beer with 8.5% alcohol that referments in the bottle. The label shows an angel holding the devil to the ground, and the marketing story behind the new beer has several references to the devil, such as a story of the victory of Archangel Saint Michael over the devil.

Additionally, AB InBev promotes Victoria as “100% natural” and also refers to “the evil, false and artificial,” which is “characteristic of the ways of the devil.”

“This is just an open attack,” beer sommelier Jeroen Peeters of the Antwerp pub Dr. Beer told Het Nieuwsblad. “They also choose the former name of Duvel. Anyone who knows anything about beer history knows that it was once called ‘Victory Ale’,” he added.

Duvel, the iconic blond specialty beer of the Moortgat brewery, has always been very successful, and it is not the first time other breweries try to beat it.

“We have established that the segment of strong, blond beers is growing,” AB InBev spokesperson Karolien Cloots told Het Nieuwsblad. “We follow this consumer trend, and therefore complete ...More info on site
