Brewery news USA: Constellation brands sees Q1 net sales decline despite 5.6% beer depletions growth
Constellation Brands, which begins its financial year in March, had a rollercoaster of a first quarter for FY 2021, with net sales declining 6%, to $1.9 billion, but beer depletions (sales to retailers) increasing 5.6%, Brewbound reported on July 1.

The Mexican government threw the beer, wine and spirits company a curveball when it issued a decree on March 31 shutting down all non-essential business operations in the country, which included breweries.

The shutdown lasted more than 70 days, and Constellation Brands CFO Garth Hankinson said during a conference call for investors and analysts on Wednesday that the company expects wholesaler inventory to return to normal levels by the third quarter. Beer production has since resumed at normal levels in Mexico, but the reduction caused Constellation’s beer operating margin to increase 240 basis points, to 41.7%, Hankinson said. The company expects the unfavorable margins to continue into Q2.

Nevertheless, Newlands insisted that the company’s best-selling Mexican import brands — Corona and Modelo — will be available on shelves.

“Our belief is that our operations team is best in class, and we are doing everything we can do at the moment to expedite shipments from our breweries, through our distribution facilities, and out to our ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Craft beer market in China ‘underserved’
There is a huge market for craft beer in China if brewers can solve the logistics issues, according to a leading Shanghai-based drinks consultant, the Australian Brews News reported on July 3.

Ian Ford, a partner in consultancy Nimbility, told James Atkinson on the Drinks Adventures podcast that the biggest beer market in the world in China is underserved.

“You absolutely have a significant proportion of those consumers who would like to drink craft beer. And they’re not being served,” Ford said, admitting he had looked into opening a brewery there.

“I’ve looked at this several times and to me there’s a massive market opportunity there that needs to get figured out.”

The interview highlighted the challenges facing the growth of craft beer in China with rigorous standards requiring brewers to achieve scale to package.

“To get a QA certificate and a QA licence to produce and bottle craft beer at a small scale is almost impossible,” Ford said.

“The requirements to be licensed to get what’s called a QS stamp, which basically certifies the product to be fit for human consumption and is required on packaged food and beverage products.

“To get that the scale of the brewery has to be massive relative to what a ...More info on site

Barley news Canada & China: Canadian barley shipments boosted by China’s feud with Australia
China’s thirsty beer markets are fueling a surge in Canadian barley shipments amid the Asian nation’s feud with Australia, the Yahoo Canada Finance reported on July 3.

Canadian shipments of barley to China rose in May as the Asian nation slapped anti-dumping duties on the grain from Australia, its top supplier. Canada exported 175,500 tons of barley to China in May, up 38% from a year earlier, according to the Canadian Grain Commission.

The number of acres allocated to barley in Canada is set to rise to the highest in more than a decade in 2020 and any additional output could be absorbed by demand from China’s beer and livestock industries, said Errol Anderson, president of ProMarket Communications in Calgary. Canada is one of the world’s major barley producers and among the top exporters.

“Unfortunately, what’s happening to Australia will benefit Canada,” Anderson said by phone. “If China comes into the market, really those additional acres will be absorbed easily.”

Canada, the second-largest malt-barley exporter to China, had already been trying to gain a bigger share of China’s beer market from Australia. The northern nation’s barley has higher protein than crops from Australia and that quality helps in fermentation to give beer more body ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Malting barley crops look very promising south of M4 motorway
Malting barley crops look very promising on the light chalkland south of the M4 motorway in southern England, with winter barley harvesting likely to start in earnest next week, Farmers Weekly reported on July 2.

Jonathan Arnold, trading director of grain merchants Robin Appel, says winter barley crops look very variable geographically, but the south of England had some rain in April and May which helped crops.

“I am seeing crops across Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset of Maris Otter and Craft and also feed barley of serious potential,” he tells Farmers Weekly.

Small pockets of feed winter barley on the lightest land have been cut, but combining of the old heritage malting variety Maris Otter and mainstream malter Craft along with feed barley is set to start in the next few days.

The group trades with 400-plus growers stretching from Cornwall to north Norfolk and from Hampshire up to Yorkshire, and Mr Arnold says he is seeing less variability in crops south of the M4 corridor.

He also reports good-looking spring barley crops and excellent winter wheat crops, especially on chalk soils in the area.

UK maltsters use about 1.9 mln tonnes of barley each year, but only a relatively small amount – about 250,000 tonnes ...More info on site
