USA: Off-premise beer sales growth begins to slow in final full week of June
|
The slowdown in off-premise beer sales began to set in during the last full week in June, but as states began to shut down on-site sales for a second time, another spike is expected, Brewbound reported on July 7.
For the one-week period ending June 27, beer category dollar sales increased 16.1%, to $1.007 billion, according to data shared by market research firm Nielsen. Excluding FMBs, hard seltzers and cider, core beer dollar sales increased just 8.1%.
“We are finally seeing the off-premise slowdown that many of us expected to see several weeks ago, when on-premise started opening up,” said Danelle Kosmal, Nielsen VP of beverage alcohol practice. “For the week ending June 27, 2020, total alcohol off-premise alcohol sales were up 19.2%, which is the second slowest growth week since mid-March.”
Nevertheless, the last full week of June marked the fifth time in the last six weeks that beer category sales topped $1 billion. Year-to-date, beer category sales are up 16%, to $21.8 billion. During the COVID-19 weeks, from early March through June 27, beer category dollar sales have increased 21.1%, to $15.8 billion.

USA: Covid-19 pandemic disrupts both brewing industry and outlook for barley growers

Where do you like to grab a cold beer? Big games, concerts, bars and restaurants are popular places to tip back a bottle or a draft. But since March, venues where people typically drink beer have been either closed or have seen major changes to prevent the spread of coronavirus. That’s pushed many beer drinkers back home, sending off-sale beer sales soaring.
Those changes have disrupted the brewing industry and the outlook for barley growers, AG Week reported on July 4.
“Essentially, all the on-premises business went to zero,” says Doug Restemayer, president of D-S Beverages in Moorhead, Minn. “So all of our draft business pretty much dried up literally overnight.”
Craft beer sales across the country dropped as much as 80% since the pandemic started. But Restemayer says canned beer sales skyrocketed, especially larger packages of lower-priced beers. That’s good news for malting barley growers, although questions remain about the future.
“We’re in territory that we just are not exactly sure where we’re going here. Things are changing daily and we’re just not sure where we’re going,” says barley farmer Greg Kessel.

USA, FL: Alga Beer Company to open its own brewery in East Hill, Pensacola
|
For years, the Alga Beer Company has been represented at nearly every beer-related event and festival in Northwest Florida, the Pensacola News Journal reported on July 3.
The company's logo is printed on commemorative glasses alongside other Pensacola breweries, and the men behind that logo have earned awards for the quality of their beer.
But Alga has been without a physical home in Pensacola — until now.
The three-man team at Alga announced on July 3 that East Hill will be that home, as the brewery has officially moved into the building at 2435 N. 12th Ave. The location is the former home of the Brew Ha Ha restaurant, which struggled to stay open a year into its tenure and remained closed after the state-mandated restaurant closure was lifted in May.
Alga's owners said their goal is to open up by November. When they do, they plan on bringing great beer and a befitting atmosphere to a pocket of Pensacola that jives perfectly with the brewery's personality.

USA, GA: Fox City Brewing already open in downtown Forsyth

Downtown Forsyth now has its own brewpub, wgxa.tv reported on July 5.
Fox City Brewing held its grand opening on the 4th of July, bringing in guests from around the area.
Created by Forsyth locals, Fox City is said to have been established as a hub for community gatherings.
With COVID-19 lurking around, it may seem like an unusual time to open a new restaurant, but owner Geroge Emami says they've got it covered.
Employees are required to wear masks, sanitize menus, and frequently wash their hands. Tables are also spread out from each other to promote social distancing.
Customers came out to enjoy good food and beer brewed in-house.
Fox City is open Monday-Saturday for dine-in customers.

USA, CA: Pure Project’s first North County brewery now open
|
Pure Project’s first North County outpost landed in the heart of Carlsbad Village just before the July 6 reopening rollback, opening with to-go sales of growlers, crowlers, and packaged beer in cans and bottles, Eater San Diego reported on July 7.
Co-founder Mat Robar says the brewery is working on a plan to expand the outdoor footprint of the new State Street space, as well as at its locations in Bankers Hill and Miramar, to be able to offer patio seating and food service.
Designed by local firm Tec/scape, the 1,200-square-foot tasting room features a 300-square-foot outdoor lounge and a 20-tap bar that will offer a rotating list of beers and even occasionally, beer slushies. Barrels by the Sea is a new specialty beer, brewed specifically for the Carlsbad opening, is a Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with pecan, caramel, cinnamon, and graham cracker. The building is also licensed for production, and though there won’t be any brewing done on site, the space will house barrels and casks for fermentation.

USA, FL: Big Storm Brewing to open new brewpub in Orlando
|
A new brewery is coming to Orlando's Amway Center, but they're certainly not new to Florida's craft beer scene, News 13 reported on July 6.
Clearwater-based Big Storm Brewing is set to open a 5,000 square-foot brewpub near the home of the Orlando Magic.
“I called it an upscale pub meets sports bar,” said Big Storm Brewing Company co-owner LJ Govoni.
With them comes their wide selection of creatively crafted beers.
“We have a coastal theme, our beer is a golden ale brewed with hibiscus and cinnamon, and a tangerine IPA,” Govoni explained.
The food menu will feature burgers and seafood. They expect to bring about 24 employees to the area and hope to open by end of the year.
You don’t need a ticket to a Magic game or concert to go in, either.
Though the pandemic goes on, Big Storm says they are rolling with the punches and it isn’t stopping them.
“What I found is great service wins out," Govoni said. "If there is basketball, hockey, it’s even better if there are concerts, it’s icing on the cake. We can only control what we can control and we are moving forward, regardless what happens.”

USA, MN: Elm Creek Brewing yet to reveal grand opening date

The city of Champlin has its first brewery—and the response has been overwhelming. Just two weeks after Elm Creek Brewing’s soft opening of its taproom on June 12 at just 50% capacity, the brewery had to shut its doors temporarily to ramp up production and expand the brewhouse to meet the high demand. A date for its grand opening has yet to be revealed, The Growler reported on July 6.
Wade Carlson, who co-owns the brewery with his son Mitchell, says that in many unexpected ways, the fallout of the pandemic has actually helped them along in their path to opening, though it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
“[When] the pandemic hit, and we were in the middle of due diligence on buying the property,” says Wade. “It came down to about the day before we closed, on whether we were going to walk away from it, and we decided to go for it.” The building previously housed Ruby Tuesdays, and Wade says everything was left behind when they purchased the property, including some less-than-ideal surprises.

UK: Malting barley harvest across southern England shows yields better than expected
|
Combines started cutting early winter malting barley crops this week across southern England, with yields better than expected after a very difficult growing season, FarmersWeekly reported on July 7.
Scattered crops of malting varieties were being cut from East Anglia down into Dorset, while one Norfolk grower dipped into his oilseed rape ahead of winter barley.
After drying winds early this week, harvest started of the heritage variety Maris Otter, as well as more mainstream Craft amid uncertain demand for malting barley as the coronavirus lockdown is slowly eased.
Dorset farm manager Martin Ford started cutting 190ha of Maris Otter on July 6 on light land in the south of the county and was very pleased with a yield of 6.5t/ha.
This season’s crop delivered a similar yield to last year and with a good grain sample, so Mr Ford was happy, especially after a tricky growing season with a very wet autumn and winter followed by a bone-dry spring.
“Otter is very reliable. It is early to harvest, so gives us a good early entry for oilseed rape and last year’s crop fetched £205/t,” he said.

Australia: Hospitality industry calls for beer tax to be scrapped or frozen before it comes into force
|
The hospitality industry is calling for Australia's beer tax to be scrapped or frozen before it comes into force next month, the Daily Mail reported on July 6.
The Australian Federal Government currently taxes an average of A$2.26 per litre of beer, which is set to increase to an unknown amount on August 1.
Without the increase, Australians already pay the fourth highest tax on beer in the industrialised world after Norway (A$3.46), Japan (A$2.92) and Finland (A$2.46).
Germany dropped its low beer tax of A$0.13 per litre to zero amid the COVID-19 pandemic while the UK froze its tax at A$1.52 to provide certainty to businesses.
Now, pubs and brewers are calling for the tax increase to either be scrapped or for the tariff to be frozen at its current level.
Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said 'there is no logical reason for Aussies to be paying even more for beer'.
‘As the hospitality industry battles with the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19 this latest increase in tax comes at a time when publicans and patrons can least afford it,' Mr Heffernan said.

UK: Molson Coors to distribute BrewDog’s products in Northern Ireland

Molson Coors has announced that it has secured the exclusive rights to distribute, sell and market Scottish craft brewer BrewDog's products in Northern Ireland, Hospitality Ireland reported on July 6.
BrewDog's Punk IPA will be available on draught in pubs and bars across Northern Ireland while a range of packaged products such as Punk IPA, Elvis Juice, Punk AF, and Dead Pony will be available to purchase in off-licences.
Molson Coors Northern Ireland customer director Jordana Busby stated, "We are delighted to announce this new partnership with BrewDog that will see Molson Coors bring their exciting range of products to consumers in Northern Ireland. We both share a passion for bringing great tasting beers to consumers, so BrewDog is a natural fit within our growing portfolio of premium beverages.
