India: Miadiamante Foods & Beverages acquires majority stake in craft brewer Independence Brewing Company
|
Miadiamante Foods & Beverages, a Nashik-based company, has picked up a majority stake in microbrewery company, Independence Brewing Company (IBC), one of the largest and oldest microbreweries in India. This is among a few transactions in the F&B space in India since the lockdown was announced, the Financial Express reported on July 10.
Miadiamante, promoted by Krishen Lal Khanna and Anirudh Khanna, acquired a majority stake in IBC from Indus Brew LLC, a US-based entity. Co-founded by Shailendra Bist, majority of the stake in IBC was previously owned by Indus Brew LLC, Greg Koch (co-founder, Stone Brewing Company) and Avanish Vellanki (co-founder & CEO, Rain Therapeutics).
IBC is widely present across Mumbai and Pune through its outlets and beer distribution business and its revenues were at around $2 million in FY20.
While Miadiamante has purchased a majority stake, founder Bist will continue to own a minority stake and invest efforts in growing the business further. What was previously a US-based LLC has now been converted into an Indian family-owned company, which will run the business.
Mihir Mehta, SVP, Ashika Capital, which facilitated the deal, said the ongoing pandemic had affected the economy drastically with the F&B sector being one of the worst-affected. “Firms should

South Africa: Craft brewers plead for support from state
|
Only 10% of South African craft brewers believe they will be able to continue trading in the near future if the current restrictions on the trade of alcohol and the prohibition of on consumption sales continue. Seven breweries closed down in June, retrenching all their staff, Food For Mzansi reported on July 9.
Responses received from more than 100 breweries in a recent survey conducted by the Craft Brewers Association of South Africa (CBASA), shows that the industry suffered major blows resulting from covid-19 and the resulting economic lockdown.
The future of local craft beer is extremely volatile following a nine-week-long ban on the sale of alcohol and strict trading regulations. The industry has recorded alarming losses and has called on government to help give them a fighting chance of survival.
According to the survey seven breweries were forced to shut their doors permanently in June. More than half of the respondents indicated that their sales have decreased by between 60-100% since the start of lockdown, while 24% indicated that their sales dropped by between 90-100%. A bulk (87%) of the brewers says they are currently unable to meet monthly expenses.
Early in May, Food For Mzansi also reported on the forced closure of

South Korea: More and more Koreans cracking open a non-alcoholic beer this summer
|
As the summer heats up, more and more Koreans are cracking open a cold one — a cold non-alcoholic beer that is, with sales of the alcohol-free drinks shooting up so fast the growth rate is expected to overtake regular beer in the next few years, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on July 9.
Recognizing the trend, beer manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, including Oriental Brewery that recently announced plans to release a non-alcoholic version of Cass, Cass Zero.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation last month, the global non-alcoholic beer market is projected to post annual growth averaging 23.1 percent every year from 2019 to 2024. The statistics is nearly seven times larger than the estimated 3.2 percent growth for the regular beer market.
Last year, the market value of non-alcoholic beer in Korea was estimated at about 10 billion won ($8.3 million), which only accounts for around 0.25 percent of the total beer market, at 4 trillion won.
The non-alcoholic beer market has been growing rapidly this year. Sales of alcohol-free beer in the first half of the year increased 22.7 percent, not significantly different from the regular market. According to the report released
