USA: Molson Coors to stop production of light craft lager Saint Archer Gold
|
Brewer Molson Coors said it will stop production of its light craft lager Saint Archer Gold, which began rolling out nationwide earlier this year, due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Chicago Tribune reported on July 13.
In a memo to distributors and employees sent July 10, Molson Coors Chief Marketing Officer Michelle St. Jacques said “the effects of the coronavirus on our industry caused an immediate loss of momentum for the brand.”
At the same time, the company said it is increasing investment in hard seltzer brands like Vizzy and its Blue Moon LightSky ale. Molson Coors also is focusing on the national launch of its Coors Seltzer brand later this year.
Molson Coors, the nation’s second largest beer company, began introducing Saint Archer Gold to other markets earlier this year to compete with Anheuser-Busch’s Michelob Ultra after initially launching in four test markets last year.
The Chicago-based brewer said Saint Archer Gold performed well with consumers earlier this year, but plans to offer samples in liquor and grocery stores across the U.S. to introduce more drinkers to the brand were disrupted by the pandemic.
St. Jacques said in the memo that the company will sell its existing inventory of Saint

UK: Heineken under fire for extending shelf life of all its kegged beer sent to pubs
|
Heineken has significantly extended the shelf life of all its kegged beer sent to pubs – months after pubs were advised to destroy millions of litres of beer in their cellars, The Grocer reported on July 13.
The brewing giant this week drew criticism online from on-trade sources, who received kegs of beer with June sell-by dates that had simply been extended to later in the year.
One source in the beer supply chain to pubs told the Grocer: “I have one customer who spent three days pouring away 30 barrels of beer, then his first delivery that arrived last week has had a shorter date on it than what he destroyed”.
Last month the British Beer & Pub Association mounted a massive campaign, backed by the likes of Heineken, AB InBev and Molson Coors, to help pub operators destroy unsaleable beer and claim back duty.
A Heineken spokeswoman stressed the brewer could only ensure the quality of beer that was already in its network.
“The keg beer that exists in our network has been kept in optimum conditions and what’s more, has been benchmarked against reference samples to ensure it is still top quality,” she said.
“We know our beer and ciders in

Australia: Carlton & United Breweries offering pubs and bars forced to shut down in Melbourne extended credit for two months
|
Asahi's newly acquired Carlton & United Breweries beer business is offering pubs and bars forced to shut down in Melbourne extended credit for two months as the beer giant endures a new hit to sales in its home base heartland, The Australian Financial Review reported on July 15.
Arch-rival Lion is also suffering a sharp sales slump in Melbourne.
CUB chief executive Peter Filipovic on July 15 sent a letter to pubs and bars saying "approved customers who purchased draught beer in areas under lockdown will be provided 8 weeks of extended credit''.
But CUB has stopped short this time of providing a keg return service, unlike the first national lockdown in late March in which it provided refunds for 100,000 kegs.
Mr Filipovic also advised that CUB would match rival Lion in absorbing the government-mandated August 1 increase in CPI-linked excise which normally lifts beer prices twice-yearly. "This price freeze applies to all our Australian customers,'' he said.
Lion earlier this week told hospitality industry customers there would be "no changes to our list prices for pack and draught beer and cider for the remainder of the year”.
Both of the big beer companies have been partially buoyed by rising sales in Queensland, with that

Belgium: Trappist monks strike a payments solution deal to meet increased demand for their Westvleteren beer
|
Ingenico Group, the global leader in seamless payments, announced on July 13 its partnership with the Saint-Sixtus Abbey, brewers of the Trappist Westvleteren, to provide a global payments solution that supports the increased international demand for its award-winning beer.
The monks of the Saint-Sixtus Abbey began brewing beer alongside their monastic activities in 1839, to become more self-supportive. All beers carry the label of “Authentic Trappist Product”, which means it is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the control of the community of monks. The production is limited and is the only source of income to cover their annual costs, sponsorships of charitable initiatives, and social projects.
Interest in Trappist Westvleteren remained modest until 2005, when a user-driven ranking website for craft beer enthusiasts named it as the best beer in the world. It has since been awarded the title four more times and was named as one of the top beers in the world for taste, putting it on the map for international beer lovers.
However, due to a combination of this growing demand and its limited stock, the Abbey faced a number of issues with customers stockpiling products and selling them on for much higher prices.

South Africa: Government reinstates ban on domestic alcohol sales
|
The South African government has reinstated its controversial ban on domestic alcohol sales as the industry reports revenue loss of R18 billion (£852.8 million), The Drinks Business reported on July 13.
Addressing the nation on July 12, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the decision had been made in order to free-up hospital beds occupied by those suffering from alcohol-related traumas.
“As we head towards the peak of infections, it is vital that we do not burden our clinics and hospitals with alcohol-related injuries that could have been avoided,” he said.
“This is a fight to save every life, and we need to save every bed. We have therefore decided that in order to conserve hospital capacity, the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol will be suspended with immediate effect.”
He added that there was now “clear evidence” that a resumption of alcohol sales “has resulted in substantial pressure being put on hospitals, including trauma and ICU units, due to motor vehicle accidents, violence and related trauma”.
South African industry groups including the South African Liquor Brandowners’ Association (SALBA), the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA), VinPro, Liquor Traders Association of South Africa (LTASA) and the Liquor Traders Council of South Africa (LTCSA) said the resumption of

World: Johnnie Walker scotch whisky to be available in plastic-free bottles from early 2021
|
Johnnie Walker scotch whisky will be available in plastic-free bottles from early 2021, Diageo Plc said on July 13, as the world’s biggest spirits maker ramps up efforts to tackle plastic waste, Reuters reported.
The new bottle, developed in partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite, will be made from wood pulp that meets food grade standards and is fully recyclable, the Guinness and Tanqueray Gin maker said.
Diageo and Pilot Lite have launched a sustainable packaging company called Pulpex Ltd to develop the paper bottle and collaborate on research and development.
Pulpex will also create branded paper-bottles in non-competing categories for companies including Lipton team maker Unilever Plc and soda maker PepsiCo, which are also expected to launch next year.
Consumer product companies have come under increased scrutiny for the amount of plastic they use in packaging food and other household items. In Europe, for example, 8.2 million tonnes of plastic were used to package food and drink in 2018, according to ING analysts.
Diageo uses less than 5% of plastic in its total packaging, but along with Unilever and PepsiCo, has set targets to reduce and recycle plastic in their packaging as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals program by 2025.

South Korea: Diageo launches lower alcohol content whiskey
|
Diageo Korea said on July 13 that it has launched two new products, W 19 and W Honey, the first spirits in the local industry with just 32.5 percent alcohol by volume, The Korea Herald reported.
The liquor maker said it had decided to lower the alcohol content of the new products to meet the rising demand for drinks that are less than full strength, as the drinking culture is rapidly changing here.
Both drinks have the optimal strength for consumers in their 30s and 40s who value smoothness and new flavors, the company said.
W 19 is made of Scotch whisky that has been aged for 19 years, and W Honey also contains honey made from Scottish heather, according to the company.
“W 19 and W Honey maximize the value of spirit drinks with lower alcohol content. They are premium spirit drinks that offer smoothness, which the low ABV of 32.5 percent can offer, as well as rich flavors that are crafted by blending the best liquids,” Diageo Korea CEO Robert Rhee said.
“We expect the launch of the two innovative brands to reinvigorate the stagnant local market.”
