Japan & USA: Suntory to enter the US beer market with non-alcoholic products
|
Japanese beverage maker Suntory Holdings will enter the U.S. beer market with non-alcoholic products, as it tries to gain ground on top brewers Anheuser-Busch InBev and Heineken, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on July 17.
The push into the U.S., which will begin in late July, is the latest attempt by a Japanese drinks company to expand overseas in response to shrinking demand for beer at home.
The market for non-alcoholic beer has grown more than fourfold in Japan over the past decade, while demand for regular brews shrank in 2019 for the 15th straight year.
In U.S. as well, more people are drinking alcohol-free beer, with demand rising 14.5% in 2019 on the year in volume terms, according to data from Euromonitor International. The market researcher predicts consumption will expand 63% between 2019 and 2024 to 172.5 million litres.
Suntory, the world's third-largest spirits maker, made a brief foray New York and California in 1987 with its beer but the latest move will be its first full-scale entry into the U.S. market.
Suntory will aim its All-Free non-alcoholic beer at health-conscious millennials, who are generally open to trying new products. The brew will mainly be sold through e-commerce channels such as Amazon at first,

USA, IL: At least four new breweries launching in Chicago in the coming weeks
|
Not even COVID-19 can slow Chicago’s beer industry. At least not yet, the Chicago Tribune reported on July 16.
As the city navigates life during a pandemic, at least four new breweries are launching in the coming weeks.
All four were in planning long before COVID-19, and all four openings were at least somewhat delayed by the pandemic. But as bars and restaurants open to on-premise customers at reduced capacities, the new breweries join one of the world’s most robust brewing landscapes.
It is, however, a very different landscape from just six months ago.
Taproom sales, once an engine of the industry, have been crippled by the pandemic. After weeks of total shutdown to in-person drinking, occupancy is currently limited to outdoor seating and 25% of indoor seating. With infections on the rise, however, both Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot have threatened to curtail crowds yet again.
Still, the brewery owners — some new and some expanding current operations — say they remain optimistic about brewing in Chicago and its suburbs.
“In the short term I’m bearish, but in the long term I’m still very bullish,” said Greg Shuff, who launches Crushed By Giants, a brewpub in a splashy downtown location on July

USA, NY: Finback Brewery already serving up brews in Gowanus
|
A new brewery in Gowanus is serving up craft brews with patio seating after their opening was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic — and the alehouse founder says much more is in store, the Brooklyn Paper reported on July 16.
Finback Brewery, which has operated a 20-barrel brewhouse in Glendale, Queens since 2013, has contributed to Gowanus’s ever-growing brewing scene with the opening of its President Street outpost.
“Gowanus for sure was and is becoming even more of a beer hub,” said Basil Lee, a founder of Finback. “There’s already a lot of people who seek out good beer and make that neighborhood a place to go for good beer.”
Located at 545 President St., Finback sits directly across the street from Strong Rope Brewery, and just blocks from nearby Threes Brewing and Wild East Brewing — all of which have taken advantage of the neighborhood’s industrial infrastructure to accommodate their brewing equipment.
While currently limited to outdoor seating, Finback’s repurposed President Street warehouse is outfitted with multiple sections, including an open area with lounge chairs, a beer-hall-type space with high stools and shared tables, and a screened off cocktail lounge that will act as the main bar area.

USA, GA: Rightside Brewing slated to launch in Atlanta this fall
|
A brewing company focusing on non-alcoholic options is slated to launch in metro Atlanta this fall, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on July 16.
Rightside Brewing is partnering with Big Kettle Brewing, a contract brewer in Lawrenceville, to brew and package a Citrus Wheat and an IPA for the Southeast market starting this October. Billed as the first non-alcoholic beer brewed in Georgia, the products will be available in bars, restaurants and retailers throughout the Southeast, with no current plans to open a dedicated brewery or taproom.
The company is the brainchild of Emree Woods, who has experience in the beverage and startup industries. She came up with the idea for Rightside when she was pregnant and realized there were limited options for adults who choose not to drink alcohol. She wanted to create a beer that was “a quality product that was similar to its alcoholic counterpart, but also removed the stigma of traditional non-alcoholic beers,” according to a press release.
“Rightside Brewing’s purpose is to create an experience for those that want a choice other than alcohol. In an industry traditionally seen as stuffy, we see the tide is changing to serve a growing demand for alcohol alternatives,” said Woods in

Canada, BC: Fox Mountain Brewing now open in Williams Lake
|
A new brewery promising to offer a “lineup of delicious beers with the good people of the Cariboo region and beyond” is now open in Williams Lake, a small city in British Columbia’s Central Interior, Canadian Beer News reported on July 16.
Fox Mountain Brewing has been established by owner and brewmaster Dave Reedman, and is located in a former Greyhound bus depot that underwent more than a year of renovations before the brewery opened at the end of June.
Beers available on tap and in growlers since opening have included Bluebird Saison (6.8% abv), Jimmy’s Pale Ale (5.2% abv), Hillbilly Blonde Ale (5% abv), and Godspeed NW IPA (5.7% abv).
Fox Mountain Brewing can be found at 215 Donald Road in Williams Lake, and is open daily from 11:30 AM with the exception of Monday and Tuesday.

Australia & China: Barley industry fears it is bearing brunt of Australia's 'fractured' relationship with China
|
Australia’s barley industry has raised fears it is bearing the brunt of “a fracture” in the relationship with China, as Canberra rejected the latest travel advice issued by Beijing as “disinformation”, The Guardian reported on July 14.
A parliamentary inquiry on July 14 heard calls from Australian agricultural groups for more help from the government to access new markets, amid concerns over the risks caused by a heavy reliance on China.
Industry players, however, have warned such a shift can’t be achieved overnight.
In the latest sign of increasingly frosty ties between Australia and its largest trading partner, Canberra has dismissed claims it is unsafe to visit or study in Australia as “factually incorrect and disinformation”.
China issued travel advice on July 13 evening citing the risk of Australian authorities conducting “arbitrary” searches of its citizens – mirroring the language that Australia used in its own travel advice regarding Australian citizens in China last week.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade responded that law enforcement and other agencies “abide by Australian law at all times”.
“There is no basis to the suggestion Australian law enforcement authorities conduct arbitrary searches or property seizures,” a Dfat spokesperson said on July 14.

UK: CAMRA calling for investigation of creation of joint venture between Carlsberg and Marston’s
|
CAMRA is calling for the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate the creation of a joint venture beer company between Wolverhampton-based Marston's and the UK operation of the Danish brewing giant Carlsberg, the Express & Star reported on July 14.
CAMRA believres the proposed merger which could see a reduction in the number of beers that are brewed.
The appeal to CMA chief executive Dr Andrea Coscelli follows a string of correspondence about the proposed joint venture between Carlsberg and Marston’s that CAMRA believes could have significant anti-competitive effects on the UK beer and pub market.
The campaign is asking the CMA to prove its credentials in standing up for consumers and commit to triggering what is known as the ‘Article 9’ referral procedure – meaning that the UK competition body could lead an investigation instead of the EU Commission, because the joint venture will mainly impact the UK beer and pub market.
CAMRA’s calculations show that the UK beer and pub market is becoming less and less competitive with every new merger or acquisition of a smaller brewer by a global brand. Global brewers currently have a 25.25 per cent share of UK pub companies, which by CAMRA’s calculations will rise to nearly

Australia: Survey confirms changes in Australia’s drinking habits
|
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2019 has been released and has shown that while there is work to do in some areas, there are long-term improvements across a range Australia’s drinking habits, The Shout reported on July 17.
The survey, which is conducted every three years, found that 83.2 per cent of people are drinking moderately or abstaining, which is a 4.2 per cent improvement from 2001. Additionally younger legal-age drinkers are drinking more responsibly than ever and there are fewer underage drinkers than ever before.
The report said: “In 2019, the proportion of people aged 18 and over abstaining from alcohol increased, from 19.5 per cent to 21 per cent. Younger age groups drove this increase, in particular those aged 25–29 (from 19.0 per cent in 2016 to 24 per cent in 2019) and 30–39 (16.6 per cent to 22 per cent).
Over the longer term, the proportion of young adults (aged 18–29) who abstained from alcohol has more than doubled. Between 2001 and 2019, the proportion abstaining rose from 9.7 per cent to 21 per cent for 18–24 year olds and from 8.8 per cent to 24 per cent for 25–29 year olds.
