World: Global craft beer market value expected to reach $186 thousand by 2025
|
The global craft beer market was valued at $108,912 million in 2018 and is projected to reach $186,590 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 8.0% from 2018 to 2025. The rise in demand for different types of craft beers drives the growth of the global craft beer market, Trend Market Research analysts said.
In past decade, there has been a surge in the worldwide consumption of beer. According to the Brewers Association, beer represents nearly 75% of the global market share of alcoholic beverages with India, China, the U.S., Brazil, Russia, Germany, and Mexico being the key markets. When it comes to craft beer, Europe and North America are the dominant markets. These regions have witnessed rise in demand for different types of craft beers such as porter, stout, brown ale, lager, and cream ale. As a result, these regions play an important role in the growth of the market, in terms of value.
However, over consumption of beer causes many health hazards such as high blood pressure, heartburn, and intoxication. It also increases sugar level of the consumers. Furthermore, drinking inadequately distilled alcoholic beverages can lead to severe health disorders and death in few cases. Imposing high taxes on

UK: Survey shows people consumed beer more frequently during lockdown
|
Months spent in lockdown significantly shifted the way many people consumed and brought beer in the UK, according to a recent survey.
The study carried out by Brew//LDN and KAM Media, highlighted that, during lockdown, respondents have been drinking beer more frequently, sourcing beer from different channels, broadening their repertoire of beers and even embracing brand new online drinking occasions. Despite this, the actual number of beers being consumed has remained stable overall.
An impressive 46% of respondents bought beer direct from a brewer for the first-time during lockdown. 87% said they plan to continue post-lockdown signifying a potentially huge shift in the way purchase their beer with considerable impacts for both the off and on-trade.
Beer enthusiasts have also been pro-actively broadening their beer repertoire with 57% of respondents saying they are now more interested in searching out unique beers than they were pre-lockdown. 47% of respondents said they’ve been seeking out more premium options.
Katy Moses, MD of KAM Media commented: “Lockdown has provided beer enthusiasts with the opportunity to develop their ‘hobby’ further by exploring new, unique and interesting beers. Many have not only increased their repertoire of beers, but they’ve also been sourcing them from new and different channels, such

UK: 2020 a challenging season for winter barley
|
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) in the UK has described 2020 as a challenging season for winter barley.
According to data from the recommended list trials carried out by the AHDB, yield results from control varieties are down 0.95t/ha on the five-year average.
Data compiled so far this season by the AHDB and released on July 22 show that the average yield of the control varieties was 8.82t/ha.
Yields varied in the different regions and results showed that average yields were at 10.78t/ha in Hampshire and 6.84t/ha in Lincolnshire.
On the varieties front, the six-rows were performing well and at relative yields of above 105%.
However, many of the two-row varieties were also performing well on the relative yield score. LG Mountain had a rating of 106, while a variety familiar to Irish growers, KWS Tower, currently has a relative yield score of 103 for the season so far.
Another variety familiar to growers in Ireland is Craft which is used for malting. It currently has a yield rating of 94 for the season so far in the UK.
The relative yields of the two-row malting varieties Electrum (96), SY Venture (96) and Craft (94) are all under 100 (the average of the control varieties)

India: Barley prices may slip to 7-year low
|
There seems to be no end in sight to the slide in barley prices over the past six months in India. Next month, prices are set to fall another 10-12% to a seven-year low of 1,090-1,100 rupees per 100 kg, Cogencis reported on July 22.
Weak demand, especially from malt makers, due to the nationwide lockdown to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus, high domestic stock, and delayed imports have come together to drive prices to multi-year lows.
In the benchmark market of Jaipur, barley is currently quoted at 1,250 rupees per 100 kg.
The decline in prices has been relentless, with a fall of 70-80 rupees in the last fortnight alone. This is a far cry from a decade ago, when prices of the coarse grain had hit a record high of 2,175 rupees per 100 kg. A year ago, barley was being sold at 1,825 rupees per 100 kg.
Tracking the weakness in the benchmark market, barley contracts on the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange are likely to extend their fall in the next four-five weeks, and may trade at 1,300-1,350 rupees per 100 kg, analysts said. Today, the most-active August contract was at 1,400 rupees per 100 kg.

UK: Midhope Castle Distillery submits planning application
|
Plans have been submitted for a new whisky distillery on the Hopetoun estate in South Queensferry, Scotland, the East Lothian News reported on July 22.
If approved, the Midhope Castle Distillery will become one of a small number of single malt distilleries in the Lothians.
Others include Glenkinchie in Tranent, and Chain Pier, Bonnington and Holyrood in Edinburgh.
A planning application has been submitted to West Lothian council for the development, which will sit adjacent to the 16th century Midhope Castle.
It is intended that the distillery will also include a long-term plan to restore the castle, which is currently an empty shell, and bring it and its grounds back into use.
The distillery would use only barley grown on the Hopetoun Estate, which already has a long tradition of growing and supplying malting barley to the Scottish whisky trade.
The company also intends to focus on environmental sustainability, with the aim of reducing its production carbon footprint to a minimum.
The project is being delivered by Currie & Brown, using Edinburgh-based 56three Architects.
A spokesperson for the Midhope Castle Distillery Company said: “We will set out to design and build a distillery that makes great whisky while addressing sustainability through every element of its architecture, its construction
