USA: US brewers running out of aluminium cans
|
Breweries in the US are running out of aluminium cans to package their beer after months of on-trade closures led to a much greater concentration on at-home drinking, The Drinks Business reported on July 27.
Brewers worldwide have shifted their priorities from kegs to cans in recent months after bars and restaurants were forced to close to stem the spread of coronavirus.
But now, packaging companies are struggling to keep up with the rising demand, and an aluminium shortage could prevent companies big and small from bringing their beer to market, reports Brewbound.
David Racino, co-founder of Texas-based packaging company American Canning, told the publication that sourcing 16oz cans will “be a problem this summer”.
“There is just such a strain on the supply chain right now.”
Beer and cider sales in supermarkets, shops and online topped US$1 billion in the week ending 9 May 2020, according to Nielsen, surpassing the top pantry-loading week of 21 March 20 by $15 million. The research firm also noted that shoppers are making fewer transactions, but spending more when they do, which suggests they are doing a ‘big shop’ once per week and stocking up on large quantities of what they would normally buy on an ad-hoc basis.

USA, OH: Boston Beer to expand Cincinnati facility
|
The Boston Beer Company announced on July 27 plans to expand its Over-the-Rhine production facility in the coming months, WCPO reported.
The manufacturer of Samuel Adams beers stated the company planned to make significant investments to remodel the canning lines in the current plant located at 1625 Central Parkway in Cincinnati. The plan also calls for the construction of new building extensions on the north and south sides of the brewing plant.
The Boston Beer Co. anticipates the investment will take 18 months and create more than 100 new jobs in Cincinnati once completed.
"My hometown of Cincinnati has always played an important role in the Samuel Adams story," said Jim Koch, Samuel Adams founder & brewer in a press release. "After all, it is where I found my great, great grandfather’s recipe for what is now known as Samuel Adams Boston Lager and where we have brewed countless Boston Beer Company products since 1994. Senator Portman and the state of Ohio have been champions for the craft beer community and we’re grateful for their partnership and support."
The current Samuel Adams plant in Over-the-Rhine includes the Schoenling Brewery where Koch's father worked. Koch said the investment to the Samuel Adams plant also will

Canada, ON: Collective Arts Brewing to open Toronto brewery and taproom
|
Collective Arts Brewing has announced that it has taken over an existing brewery and taproom in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods neighbourhood, and will be relaunching it under the Collective Arts banner later this year, Canadian Beer News reported on July 24.
Collective Arts Toronto will be located at 777 Dundas St. W., a space that was home to The Six Brewhouse from early 2018 until its quiet closure last month. It will feature a 10-barrel brewhouse, taproom, patio, and retail store, and in keeping with the brewery’s “artist-first mission”, visual art will be displayed gallery-style throughout the space.
“We’ve always looked to Toronto as another home for us,” says Collective Arts co-founder Bob Russell in a statement. “We’re inspired by the vibrant culture and arts community that the city brings; we believe that this location is an ideal spot for us to be.”
“Innovation in our beer making is something we’ve always taken pride in,” adds co-founder Matt Johnston. “This facility will allow [brewmaster] Ryan Morrow and his team to truly experiment with small batch brews.”
Hiring is currently underway for several Collective Arts Toronto positions, including head brewer, chef, and general manager, and the patio and retail store are expected to open in late

USA, MN: Swing Barrel Brewing launched by longtime friends in Moorhead
|
For owners and longtime friends Sean Syverson and John Kapla, founding and opening their own brewery was written in the stars. They may not have known that fact in their college years or when other jobs took them to separate continents. Despite the extra hurdles the pair had to overcome due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have since opened, completing a dream that was years in the making. Syverson and Kapla stared adversity in the face, but they have come out on the other side as better owners, brewers, and friends. The prime example is their beautiful brewery in downtown Moorhead, The Growler reported on July 24.
Syverson and Kapla met in college, becoming fast friends while attending Minnesota State University Moorhead together. After graduation, Syverson left Moorhead to teach language arts in South Korea and Kapla left for Minneapolis. Despite their distance, the two kept in touch over the years and both happened to pick up brewing as a hobby at the same time.
“We had both been brewing since we parted, we both just kind of picked it up. For me, I started brewing when I went over to Korea because it was just really expensive to get a decent

USA, WA: Couple to launch Four-Eyed Guys Brewing Company in Spokane despite Covid-19
|
A Spokane couple is living out their dream to open their own brewery despite Covid-19 challenges, Fox 28 reported on July 26.
Four-Eyed Guys Brewing Company co-owners Hillary and Alex Rausch realized beer was going to play a big part in their story about three years ago.
“We started brewing beer to save money for our wedding, and then I just fell in love with it,” Alex Rausch said. “Then the hobby obviously intensified into this.”
The husband and wife team is preparing to open a brewery at 910 W Indiana, just a few minutes from downtown Spokane. The space will feature what they call their “weird but not too weird” signature beers, like a peanut butter sour.
Even a global pandemic couldn’t keep them from missing this opportunity.
“We’ve been looking for a taproom space for about three years now and this one kind of just fell in our lap,” Alex Rausch said.
They trust the timing, even though it’s a nerve-wracking time to open a business. Their brewing contemporaries across Washington state are preparing for Governor Inslee’s new Covid-19 restrictions to go into effect. They include prohibiting indoor service at breweries until further notice.
The couple can’t predict what the future will hold, but they

Canada, ON: New Ontario Brewing Company opens new facility in North Bay
|
Just one day after the New Ontario Brewing Company received its occupancy permit, it opened the doors to its new facility on Seymour Street in North Bay, BayToday reported on July 27.
“Once it came in, we said we were going to open the doors. We’re not going to do a ton of advertising. Pretty much everything here right now is new from what we used to do before. We’re just going to get to know the system while people are coming through,” explained company president and brewmaster Mike Harrison about the weekend opening.
“So, everything we have is new from point of sale software, new products, new ways we package. So, we’re soft rolling the intro this weekend and for the next couple of weeks, and we are hoping to roll out a grand opening towards the end of summer.”
North Bay’s original brewing company has been open since 2015.
“But New Ontario Brewing was here 100 years before that. It ran for 10 years around the First World War, and then it burned down. So, we kind up picked up the mantel in 2015.”
The business moved from its Cassells Street location of about 1,400 square feet to its new 16,000

USA, MD: Gateway Craft Brewing opens its doors in Salisbury
|
After several years in the making, a new Salisbury brewery opened its doors for the first time this weekend, WMDT reported on July 26.
Lynn and Tim Gavigan are the owners of Gateway Craft Brewing on Northwood Drive. Lynn tells 47 ABC that brewing started as a hobby for Tim but they decided to turn it into a retirement project by opening a brewery of their own. They make the beer in very small hand crafted batches and call themselves a nano brewery. Currently, they have a kölsch beer, gose beer and Belgian beer available. Lynn says they had a pale ale that sold out on Friday, July 24 and they are working on an IPA.
Lynn says they’re following COVID-19 guidelines but those restrictions are adding an extra challenge as they welcome customers for the first time. “Our full capacity would be close to 30 so we’re trying to keep it around 12 or 15. But that was hard to do on our first day open to say no you can’t come in. So that’s the challenge with COVID, it’s a bad time to open something like this,” says Lynn Gavigan.
Right now, they are limited to selling tastings since they only

USA, TX: Skull Mechanix Brewing closes forever due to crisis created by coronavirus pandemic
|
South Austin brewery Skull Mechanix Brewing is closed forever on 1005 East St. Elmo Road, Building 2. The shutter is because of the “economic crises created by the COVID-19 pandemic,” as confirmed by its Instagram account, Eater Austin reported on July 27.
“We did not plan for a deadly virus to come to town,” as shared by its announcement post on Instagram, “and shutter everything that we were designed for. We knew right away that our concept would be the heaviest hit.” The brewery, which was known for its strong lager and ale lineups, as well as hosting live music shows and private events, had planned for a busy 2020 until the pandemic hit.
In late March, the taproom closed because of city and state mandates. The brewery took its time launching its beer to-go program, because “that’s a lot of pressure and a new responsibility that we were not prepared for,” as noted by its Instagram page.
Beer to-go sales began in early May, because the brewery wanted to make sure it was done right and “didn’t want to make any mistakes that could possibly hurt someone.” It acknowledged that it perhaps “took a little too long.” After an executive order allowing

Bulgaria: Beer sales in restaurants drop by 60% in H1 2020
|
The Covid-19 crisis hit beer sales in Bulgaria hard in the first half of 2020, slashing sales of beer via restaurants by about 60 per cent, the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria said on July 20.
Restrictive measures by Bulgaria’s government saw restaurants and bars closed for several weeks, with their outdoor sections allowed to re-open in early May, while full re-opening was allowed later.
The Covid-19 crisis reversed previous positive trends in the brewing industry, the Union of Brewers said, noting that draught beer – kegs – in the first six months of 2020 accounted for only two per cent of the beer market.
Diminished purchasing power of consumers, the stagnation of sales through restaurants and the greatly reduced tourist numbers saw sales of beer in glass bottles reduced and sales of beer in plastic bottles grow.
“The pandemic of 2020 has posed a number of challenges to businesses and people,” Ivana Radomirova, executive director of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria, said.
“It is therefore not surprising that for the first half of 2020, beer sales through restaurants fell sharply by about 60 per cent, while the volumes sold through the store network are almost at last year’s levels.”
Radomirova said that in spite

India & Thailand: India tightens regulations for alcohol-free beer, Thailand mulling tax rises for the category
|
India has moved to implement strict 0% ABV regulations for alcohol-free beer in the country as part of the country’s alcoholic beverages revision, while Thailand is mulling tax raises for the category - spelling tough times ahead for zero-alcohol beers as a whole, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on July 27.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a new directive for alcohol-free beer in the country under the paragraph for Beer in the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations.
“A new clause shall be inserted in Part 4, Regulation 4.1 [of the Alcoholic Beverages Regulations] related to ‘Beer’, namely that Alcohol-free beer shall carry alcohol-by-volume (ABV) level of 0.0,” said FSSAI Advisor for Standards N. Bhaskar in the new directive.
“New draft regulations [for Alcoholic Beverages] are in the process of being notified, and the finalisation of these regulations are likely to take some time.”
Under the same regulation, beers with 0.5% to 5.0% ABV are considered Regular or Mild, whereas those with over 5.0% ABV are considered Strong (up till 8.0% when it will be not be considered under Beer regulations).
The status of beers with above 0.0% ABV but below 0.5% ABV has not been finalised in this directive, and

Nigeria: International Breweries first-half results affected by Covid-19 pandemic
|
International Breweries Plc (IB Plc), a proud part of the AB InBev family, the world’s largest brewer, has announced its unaudited results for its half-year period ended June 30th 2020, the Guardian reported on July 29.
The result, which was just released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), reflected the impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic on Nigeria.
As part of the company’s proactive measures, the cost of sales maintained a downward trend within the quarter. This was coupled with the stringent cost controls implemented at the beginning of the year and strengthening its credit modalities to better position the company for a return to competitive growth.
While the quarter may not have ended robust enough, the results show that the company made significant progress in some other critical areas as enumerated above which further demonstrates its commitment to build a company that will last by consolidating on the strategies being implemented to get it back on the path to profitability with better returns on investment for its shareholders. In addition, International Breweries continue to gain market share which has propelled it to No 2 position in Nigeria’s beer sub-sector.
Meanwhile, the company held its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, July 21,

Thailand & Australia: Thailand forecast to buy 600,000 tonnes of Australian barley
|
Thailand is forecast to buy 600,000 tonnes of Australian barley this year in a market which has the potential to reach 1 million tonnes (Mt), according to CBH Group trading manager Drew Robertson, Grain Central reported on July 28.
Speaking at the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia (GIWA) barley forum on July 27, Mr Robertson said Thailand’s tariff system was currently friendly to feed barley, and competitive pricing was making Australia a desirable supplier.
“Feed barley is displacing feed wheat into Thailand,” Mr Robertson said.
“For every cargo of feed wheat they buy, they have to buy three cargoes of domestic corn.
“That policy is not on barley, so they can buy and consume barley as a result of that without having to make the extra purchases of corn.
“Certainly if barley is priced at about a A$15-A$20/tonne discount to feed wheat on a landed Thailand basis, then barley has probably displaced feed wheat into those rations.”
In the Australian barley-marketing year to date, Mr Robertson said Thailand had purchased 430,000 tonnes, and could end up taking around 600,000t before the new marketing year started.
Australia’s exports of barley to Thailand have risen from 22,000 tonnes in 2016-17.
“Thailand could be up to 1 million tonnes (Mt)

Australia: Western Australia to further reduce barley area if China remains out of the market for Australian barley
|
A further drop in barley area can be expected in Western Australia from next year if China remains out of the market for Australian barley, according to CBH Group trading manager Drew Robertson.
Speaking at the Grain Industry Association of WA (GIWA) Barley Forum 2020 on July 27, Mr Robertson said barley’s higher yields relative to wheat, and its historically small discount to wheat, have seen WA’s barley area climb in the past decade.
“Barley yields about 15 per cent higher than wheat in WA than wheat,” Mr Robertson said.
“Barley has grown from 18pc of the commodity mix to 34pc, largely at the expense of wheat.
“In 2021, we’ll probably start to see the percentage of barley decline.”
Prior to China’s introduction of a tariff on Australian barley, GIWA forecast WA’s area planted to barley at 1.8 million hectares (Mha), down from last year’s record 1.9Mha ahead of concerns about the tariff’s impact on 2020-21 prices.
GIWA’s latest estimate puts WA’s planted barley area at 1.62Mha, and reverses the growth trend in WA barley area seen in the decade to now.
Mr Robertson said 2013 was the year “China really started to step up”, and between 2013 and 2018, helped to make feed barley’s discount to
