Brewery news World: Molson Coors Beverage Company sees 15.1% decline in Q2 2020 revenue
As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the on-premise channel continue to be felt worldwide, Molson Coors Beverage Company reported $2.5 billion in net revenue for the second quarter of 2020, a 15.1% decline compared to the same period last year.

In the U.S., the company’s Q2 brand volumes declined 5.2%, while domestic shipments (sales-to-wholesalers) declined 6.5%. Molson Coors’ total North America brand volumes declined 7.8%, due to “aluminum can supply and other packaging material constraints,” according to the company’s quarterly earnings release.

“Consumer demand has shifted in a way no one could have foreseen six months ago, when bars and restaurants were shuttered in the early part of Q2 and demand for kegs in the U.S. went to zero,” CEO Gavin Hattersley said in a conference call with investors and analysts. “Conversely, demand for cans went through the roof.”

Molson Coors expects can shortages to be a problem in Q3 too, as the company builds inventory to meet consumer demand for two of its new, popular offerings Vizzy Hard Seltzer and Blue Moon Light Sky, with both packaged in 12 oz. slim cans, global chief financial officer Tracey Joubert said. Next month, the company will launch another slim can offering: Coors ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft beer volumes estimated to have declined around 10% in January-June
The Brewers Association 2020 Midyear Survey shows both the variety of market challenges for craft brewers during the pandemic and the challenges of gathering accurate survey data. The Brewers Association (BA), a trade association that represents craft brewers by its definition and is always a great resource for info regardless of what you think of that definition, recently released another survey of its membership, trying to capture a sense of industry growth or decline in what was still a thriving market in 2019, the Craft Brewing Business reports.

Last year, craft brewers collectively produced 26.3 million barrels of beer and realized just under 4 percent total growth, increasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 13.6 percent, according to other BA info. But, how’s the first half of 2020 been? As one might expect, not great. Bart Watson, economist for the BA, explained:

'Based on the results of our midyear survey, it appears that craft volumes declined around 10% in the first half of 2020 versus the same period in 2019.

'Yet, there is still optimism in the industry. In the same survey, it’s noted that most brewers forecasted modest growth in the second half.

'One final piece we asked about was brewers ...More info on site

"Big Rock achieved 510% EBITDA growth, compared to the same period in 2019, and cash flow from operations of C$2.8 million in the second quarter of 2020. Despite the challenges faced related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a significant loss in bar, restaurant and event revenue, we are extremely pleased with the success of the business and the resilience of our employee base through these uncertain times," said President & CEO Wayne Arsenault, "Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have prioritized and implemented extraordinary measures to protect the safety of our employees, customers and consumers. Brewery news Canada, AB: Trial & Ale Brewing debuts in Edmonton
A new brewery dedicated to producing “long-aged mixed fermentations, Brett saisons and fruited sour and wild ferments” has released its first beer in Edmonton, Canadian Beer News reported on July 27.

Trial & Ale Brewing debuted earlier this month with the release of Separated to a Degree (5.7% abv), a limited edition sour/wild ale described as follows:

We’ve waited a long time and cultivated an elaborate mixture of wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria over a period of years to bring you this blend. Presented with light copper hues and a citrus nose, the first impression of upfront lactic sourness soon gives way to a retronasal grapefruit olfaction that delights. We wanted to showcase our blend to be the difference, not the similarity. While there are many qualities that make this beer a textbook American Sour & Wild Mixed Fermentation by style, there are yet more characteristics that separate it from the pack.

Set to follow soon is A Saison Apparent (7.4% abv), a blended Brett Saison that will be available year-round, with the following notes:

While we love the ever-increasing number of saisons in the marketplace, none capture the heights (or the depths) of the level of funk in our saison blends. With ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, Washington, DC: City-State Brewing starts construction after more than three years of fundraising and planning
After more than three years of fundraising and planning, a former Senate staffer’s brewery started construction last week near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station in D.C.’s Edgewood neighbourhood, WTOP reported on July 27.

Attending the official groundbreaking were representatives from the office of D.C.’s deputy mayor for planning and economic development and the Department of Small and Local Business Development, as well as Council Member Elissa Silverman.

James Warner, also a former Peace Corps volunteer, signed a lease for 13,000 square feet at 705 Edgewood Street Northeast in January, and has ambitious plans for the space.

City-State will comprise two connected brew houses: a 20-barrel system for larger batches and a five-barrel brew house for experimental beers. It will include a large, on-site taproom, a biergarten, community use space, events rental space and a catering kitchen.

City-State will be able to host live music and will partner with D.C. food trucks for events and customers at the taproom.

Warner expects to incorporate D.C. history in the brewpub and its beers. A wall of fame will feature local legends and beers with D.C.-centric names such as 8 Wards Independent Pale Ale, Lost Laws Pilsner and a saison called The Brookland.

“We’re opening in a historically diverse ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Brighter Days Brewing Co. is now open in Tarpon Springs
COVID-19 regulations don’t allow breweries to host guests, that’s not stopping beer makers from slinging cases of signature craft brews. And in Brighter Days Brewing Co.’s case, making its debut mid-pandemic, Creative Loafing reported on July 27.

The brewery, located at 311 North Safford Ave. in Tarpon Springs opened on July 4 so beer nerds can quench their thirsts by grabbing cans of brews like Raspberry Beret sour ale, Endless Love hazy pale ale, and the Bicycle Race pale ale (all designed by Fat Basset Design).

The brewery is staying connected with the community by dropping bright can designs and new offerings on Facebook, introducing new offerings. On July 17, Brighter Days posted the Marula, a hazy double india pale ale boasting a 8.8% ABV.

If you need a bigger pour, guests can also opt for 32-ounce growlers, that’ll cost you $10 (including the brew).

Brighter Days also created the ultimate quarantine gear—a four-pack can cooler sling you can wear on your back. The sling will cost you $22, or $40 if you get it filled with a 4-pack. No judgement on how or where you’ll be wearing it. You can call in your order at 727-940-2350 from noon-8 p.m. seven days a week.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Turkey Shoot Brewing enters the market with a contract-brewed version of its flagship beer
A new brewery that is preparing to open in the town of Georgina on the southern shore of Lake Simcoe has announced its entry into the market with a contract-brewed version of its flagship beer, Canadian Beer News reported on July 28.

Turkey Shoot Brewing has been founded by brewer Kyle Stewart, his fiancée Jaclyn Dipietro, and friend Brennan Roy. With Stewart as head brewer, Dipietro as general manager, and Roy as accountant and part-time brewer, the trio will be opening a bricks-and-mortar location in Keswick, one of the communities in Georgina.

In the meantime, Turkey Shoot has used the facilities at Kame & Kettle Beer Works to brew its first commercial batches of Pefferlaw Pale Ale (5% abv), which is named after another Georgina community, and is described as follows:

This pale ale uses a blend of Cascade and Rakau hops from The Tavistock Hop Company that lends a unique combination of citrus and stone fruit aromas. The sharp, clean bitterness is provided by a one-of-a-kind hop called Wild Turkey grown only by Clear Valley Hops. This blend of Ontario hops produces a bright and refreshing pale ale.

As indicated by the description, Turkey Shoot is a strong supporter of local hop growers, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Rockcreek Brewing Company opens for business in downtown Mission
Two years after Rockcreek Brewing Company first announced it was coming to downtown Mission, the craft brewery, located at 5880 Beverly, is open for business, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on July 30.

Co-owners Sara Charlson, Mark Schonhoff, Craig Reed and Chris Murrish opened the craft brewery in late May, but only initially offered cans to-go due to the coronavirus pandemic. After a brief opening, the brewery closed for a little while to see if the pandemic would get better, and when it didn’t, the doors opened back up.

“We figured [the pandemic] is not going away, so we’re back to figuring out — like every small business — how to make it work with the current circumstances,” Charlson said.

Rockcreek owners wear masks and requires all customers to wear masks when moving throughout the taproom, but not when seated and drinking beer. The craft brewery allows 38 to 40 customers in at a time to accommodate social distancing, and tries to limit larger crowds, she said.

Additionally, the owners are constantly using COVID-19 approved sanitizers and offering guests the opportunity to self-sanitize if they wish, Charlson said. Despite the pandemic challenges, Reed said “business has been really good” and the brewery feels supported ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Paddle Creek Beer Company officially canning its first beers
Five years after starting its home brew operations, Paddle Creek Beer Company in East Hartford is officially canning its first beers, The Register Citizen reported on July 28.

The new beers will be available on Saturday, Aug. 1 through a pickup window, according to the brewery's Facebook page. Two of the three beers that will be on sale have been unveiled with the third one still remaining a mystery.

The first, Lawn Racer, is a Kolsch Style Ale, which is being labeled as the "first of our lawn mower series of beers where we have worked hard to provide a flavorful but crisp beer."

The second, Citranade, is a fruity double-hopped IPA. The brew is made with citra, mosiac, azacca, and galaxy to give it "flavors of orange juice, mango and tropical fruit," according to the site.

In addition, the brewery also has plans to open its first taproom in East Hartford in the future. According to the website, the new taproom boasts 900 sq ft of brewing space, and features "a 7BBL system with a cellar capacity of 1,750 barrels of beer per year."

Brewery news USA, VA: Dancing Kilt Brewery opens in Chester after nearly two years of planning
A new brewery has waltzed into Chester.

Dancing Kilt Brewery opened this month at 12912 Old Stage Road after nearly two years of planning, the Richmond BizSense reported on July 30.

The opening marks a career change for owner Thomas Pakurar Jr., who got into homebrewing years ago while working in IT. He’d bring his brews to company outings and give bottles as gifts, and eventually won awards at amateur brewing contests.

“One day a few years ago, someone said to me, ‘Hey are you opening a brewery?’ I said ‘No.’ Then a second person asked,” Pakurar said. “By the time the 12th person came and asked I said, ‘Hey maybe there’s something to this.’”

He leased the 3,500-square-foot space in an industrial strip center about two years ago and continued to develop recipes while working full time in IT. Despite population density and demographics telling him to not open in Chester, he said he decided to go for it in his home county where he and his family live.

“I really didn’t want to go into Richmond (city limits) because that wasn’t my local community,” Pakurar said. “If you look at Europe, each town has their own local brewery that serves that town.”

Brewery news USA, FL: Post Modern Brewing LLC gets permission to open a craft beer brewery and taproom in Jacksonville
The Jacksonville Planning Commission recommended approval July 23 of a rezoning request by Post Modern Brewing LLC to open a craft beer brewery and taproom at 2951 Post St. west of Willow Branch Avenue, where Riverside meets Murray Hill, WJCT News reported.

The Planning and Development Department recommended denial of the project, saying the proposed use is too intense, the site design does not blend well with the historic pattern of development and outside seating is not compatible with the residential character of the area.

But commission members voted unanimously in favor of the rezoning. Commissioner Ian Brown said the project will preserve a neglected old building, help stimulate positive growth in this commercial area of Post Street and blend well with the nearby residential use.

City Council Land Use and Zoning Committee and then full Council now will consider the rezoning.

Brewery news Zimbabwe & South Africa: Delta Corporation sees beer volumes dip, soft drinks increase in Q2 this year
COVID-19 restrictions and the economic crisis combined to cause a dip in the consumption of beer for Delta Corporation, but soft drink are up, The Zimbabwe Mail reported on July 31.

Delta says Zimbabweans drank 18% less lager beer in the three months to June than they did over the same time last year, a period that itself had low consumption. Drinkers had 51% less sorghum beer in the last quarter. However, there was more consumption of soft drinks, up 35% in the quarter.

Beer sales were already under pressure due to the economic crisis. The lockdown measures, announced in March, made things worse as bars and many bottle stores were closed.

“Trading in alcoholic beverages was restricted to off-premise outlets for home consumption in line with the COVID-19 guidelines,” Delta said in a statement on July 31.

For sorghum drinkers, there was even less incentive to drink as prices rose higher than in any other drinks category. This was due to an increase in the cost of imported inputs, such as packaging and brewing cereals.

But it was good news for soft drinks. Sparkling beverages volume grew by 35% for the quarter compared to prior year, a time when soft drinks were recovering after ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverages have started to recover with the gradual re-opening of the economy
Diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation reported that its food and beverage businesses under San Miguel Food and Beverages have started to recover with the gradual re-opening of the economy, the Manila Bulletin said on July 30.

“With the government’s easing of restrictions on transportation, the operation of business establishments, and consumption of alcoholic beverages, we’ve been recovering a lot of lost ground,” said SMC President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang.

He noted that, “Recovery started around second half of May to June, when government gradually restarted our economy and kept it going.”

Ang said that, for SMC, the re-opening, even with limitations has had a “domino effect” on smaller businesses in its supply chain.

“With consumption up, many of our own employees and those of our partners, dealers, suppliers, contract growers, and service providers are working again. On top of that, nationwide, a lot of micro, small, to medium enterprises—from sari-sari stores, retailers, bottle collectors, haulers, and the like—are also able to resume their business and livelihood,” Ang said.

He added that, “This helps ensure that more Filipinos won’t go hungry and are more resilient to the impact of this crisis.”

There was a mixed reaction to the figures.

Alcohol industry group Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) called the drop in sales "stark", while anti-alcohol misuse group Alcohol Action Ireland said it was a "modest reduction" considering the measures that had been put in place during lockdown.

Brewery news South Africa: Heineken shuts down production, halts R6bn expansion plans for North Coast
In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the collapse of the restaurant and bar trade, Heineken South Africa has been forced to shut down production entirely, the North Coast Courier reported on July 31.

This has significantly impacted the company’s ambitious growth strategy, with the beer giant withdrawing its plans to expand its geographic footprint onto the North Coast.

Heineken’s proposed R6-billion production facility was expected to provide a massive financial boost for the region, creating 400 permanent new jobs and making many more service-related employment opportunities available.

The Inyaninga site near Dube TradePort had been earmarked for its new brewery.

The Heineken portfolio includes eight brands:

Heineken, Amstel, Windhoek, Sol, Miller Genuine Draft, Strongbow Cider, Soweto Gold and Tafel.

The company said with no end date in sight for the ban on alcohol sales, executive salaries had been cut by 20% from May to December and no bonuses would be paid.

The South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba), the Beer Association of South Africa, Vinpro, and the Liquor Traders Association of South Africa have warned that restricting legal alcohol sales will lead to the growth of illicit alcohol trade.

“The liquor industry has a wide and deep value chain employing almost one million people across the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Alcohol consumption during lockdown period drops by almost half
Brits consumed 1.3 billion litres of alcohol during the UK’s lockdown period, which was almost half the 2 billion litres recorded during the same period last year, according to data from Nielsen Scantrack and CGA. This is despite UK consumers spending an additional £1.9 billion on alcohol in supermarkets since lockdown began, as consumers shifted spend from pubs and restaurants, Drinks Retailing News reported on July 30.

Nielsen data shows that in the 17-week period covering lockdown to July 11 2020, UK consumers spent £7.7 billion on alcohol in UK supermarkets, this is an additional £1.9 billion compared to the same time last year. However the lack of on-trade purchases - alcohol bought from restaurants, pubs and cafes - has led to a lower volume of alcohol sold overall.

In this same period, Nielsen data shows that beer was the most popular drink of the lockdown period, with sales totalling £2.2 billion during the full 17-week period. This is an additional £737 million spent overall on beer in supermarkets compared to the same time last year.

Beer has become the drink of lockdown, with Nielsen data showing that in the week ending May 30 2020 - which covered the bank holiday weekend - ...More info on site
