In a statement released by Asahi on August 6, their Chair Peter Margin said: “Asahi Beverages is proud to be investing in Australia for the long-term. We have incredible confidence in the Australian market and the potential for long-term growth.”

Ireland: Guinness sales sharply down in Ireland over past year
|
Guinness sales have declined sharply in Ireland over the past year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic which has devastated the pub and hospitality industry, the Irish Post reported on August 5.
According to full-year results from parent company Diageo, demand for the iconic Irish stout has dropped dramatically across the Emerald Isle with sales down nearly a quarter over the past year.
Diageo reported a 22% drop in sales of the black stuff across Ireland over the 12-month period ending in June.
It comes as part of a wider tread for dramatic drops in demand across with Diageo recording a 20% decrease in sales across all of its drink brands in Ireland.
By comparison, there was a decline of just 4% over the same period in the UK, with the contrasting data attributed to generally stronger sales and the decision to keep pubs closed for longer in Ireland.
While beer sales were already reported as being “soft” in Ireland prior to the pandemic, the dramatic drop in Guinness sales coincided with the closure of pubs in mid-March.
It sparked some pubs to begin offering Guinness deliver services, with Guinness also took action with a keg return scheme

Kenya: Keroche Breweries scales down on major operations
|
Liquor companies are struggling to stay afloat amid the economic crisis caused by the ripple effect of the coronavirus pandemic, the Daily Nation reported on August 4.
Keroche Breweries chief executive officer Tabitha Karanja said her company has been forced to consider cost cutting measures to survive the harsh economic times.
Speaking to the Nation via telephone, she said the firm had scaled down on major operations, only retaining staff offering critical services like maintenance.
"It is a global phenomenon and just like many companies around the world, we have to adapt to measures that will enable us to survive this critical period," said Mrs Karanja.
Prior to the halting of beer selling in bars, the company had increased its online presence and embraced home deliveries, aimed at retaining its customer base.
"Beer taking in African setup is a social event and drinking from home is not as popular," said Mrs Karanja.
She also said that some employees are on unpaid leave while others had their stay home period extended.
The CEO said she was in support of the President’s order to halt the selling of liquor in bars and other social places.
"The move is aimed at helping to curb the spread of the virus and I

UK: Six-row barley harvest so far disappointing
|
Harvest is moving on across the country, with a continuing trend of yield variability but with quality largely exceeding expectations, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on August 5.
Six-row barleys, however, are so far proving to be disappointing.
Winter barley has been coming in at under 15% moisture with specific weights easily making 62-64kg/hl, says Cecilia Pryce, head of research at Openfield.
Although not much wheat has arrived yet, she is expecting varied results. “This year some farmers were not able to get winter varieties into the ground until well into the new year,” she explains.
“We have farmers who have planted in some appalling conditions. Milling varieties have been grown as feed wheat – so any variety-specific quality results should be treated with caution.”
Cornwall
Winter barley started moving off farm in Cornwall two weeks ago, according to Mike Freke, director at Mi-Grains in Perranporth.
“Quality is very good with yields being better than expected,” he says. “We’ve had farmers reporting yields above 7.4t/ha – for most, winter barley has come off nice and clean, averaging 6.8t/ha with specific weights about 68kg/hl.”
According to Mr Freke, the area still favours the tested variety Cassia, although a few have grown hybrids and six-rows.
“The six-rows have been terrible – a
