Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports second quarter and six month results
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, reported financial results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2020 in a Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 5.

The company’s second quarter performance reflects the continued impacts of the ongoing global pandemic, which forced the shut-down of on-premise bars and restaurants, including its brewpubs, for most of the quarter. Against this backdrop, CBA grew total company packaged shipments 13% over the second quarter last year, driven by strong growth among its core brands in package. Notably, packaged shipments for Kona grew 12% in the quarter, led by robust demand for Big Wave, which grew packaged shipments 15% over the second quarter last year. Kona’s second quarter growth also reflects the addition of new Spiked Island Seltzers, which launched in select test markets earlier this year, including California, where it already ranks in the top 5 brands for velocity.

“Acknowledging the evolving set of challenges facing our industry today, we are especially proud of Kona’s 12% increase in packaged shipments for the quarter. This achievement builds on the momentum we fueled through our marketing investments last year and further validates Kona’s relevance and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Beach Cat Brewing to open its doors on Thursday, August 6
Whatcom County’s newest brewery, Beach Cat Brewing in Birch Bay, will open its doors and start serving craft beer this Thursday, August 6, according to a post on the company’s Facebook page.

It’s a long time coming for Darin Hamm and Jake Gobeille, who plan to serve unique beers brewed on a small scale.

Hamm, president of the Bellingham Homebrewers Guild, has been home brewing for 20 years while Gobeille picked up the hobby four years ago. Gobeille previously worked in mental health, but quit his job to pursue a brewing career. Soon after, he was diagnosed with cancer and after chemotherapy treatments he went into remission and began working at Illuminati Brewing Company, in Bellingham. It was there he met Hamm and the two, both with dreams of owning their own small brewery, partnered to start Beach Cat Brewing earlier this year.

Beach Cat Brewing is located at 101-7876 Birch Bay Drive, just south of CJ’s Beach House. Gobeille said it is the perfect location for a brewery called Beach Cat, a name that is dear to his heart.

Growing up, Gobeille and his high school friends would call each other “beach cats.” “It was our little club,” he said. When Gobeille started ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Two Locals Brewing Company to become one of Pennsylvania’s first Black-owned breweries
Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene is about to become more diverse, the Waynesboro Record Herald reported on August 5.

Brothers Rich and Mengistu Koilor, who hail from West Philadelphia, are the owners of Two Locals Brewing Company, which is slated to be one of the first Black-owned breweries in Pennsylvania.

With 4,200 followers on Instagram, they are already popular among craft beer connoisseurs.

Their venture began back in 2016, when Rich bought a home brewing kit online from Northern Brewer, a company that sells equipment such as brew kettles, growers, and base malts.

His first batch was an Irish Red Ale, and Mengistu served as the taste-tester.

"I brewed it about two or three times at first and then I let him taste it," Rich Koilor said. "And then we started brewing together and sharing our beer with family and friends."

They now have four beers they brew consistently with names that pay homage to their West African and West Indian heritage and the city where they grew up.

There’s the Nubian (a brown ale); the Prolific Hazy IPA; 215 City Ale (an oatmeal milk stout), and Who You Wit? (a Belgian wheat).

In support of the Black Lives Matter movement, they also created a Black is Beautiful beer, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Logan Brewing Company to hold grand opening on Friday, August 14
On Friday, August 14th Logan Brewing Company celebrates the grand opening of its brewery and taproom in Burien, Washington.

They’re calling it a “socially distant opening.” Because of statewide pandemic restrictions, the taproom is currently limited to outdoor seating only, but they have quite a bit of that, with patio seating for up to 40 guests.

The brewery is located near the northwest corner of the city’s Town Square Park, on the retail level of the Maverick apartment complex. Logan Brewing will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00 ’til 9:00, and Friday through Sunday from 3:00 ’til 10:00. Family-friendly and dog-friendly. Outside food welcome.

For the opening, Logan Brewing will offer two beer choices. Speed Runner is a west coast IPA, featuring Amarillo and Ekuanot hops. Easy Mode is a blonde ale. A few days following the opening, they’ll tap into CDA Mind on Midnight, a cascadian dark ale infused with cold-brewed coffee. Also, a raspberry wheat ale is currently in the fermenter.

Barley news UK: Six-row barley harvest so far disappointing
Harvest is moving on across the country, with a continuing trend of yield variability but with quality largely exceeding expectations, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on August 5.

Six-row barleys, however, are so far proving to be disappointing.

Winter barley has been coming in at under 15% moisture with specific weights easily making 62-64kg/hl, says Cecilia Pryce, head of research at Openfield.

Although not much wheat has arrived yet, she is expecting varied results. “This year some farmers were not able to get winter varieties into the ground until well into the new year,” she explains.

“We have farmers who have planted in some appalling conditions. Milling varieties have been grown as feed wheat – so any variety-specific quality results should be treated with caution.”

Cornwall

Winter barley started moving off farm in Cornwall two weeks ago, according to Mike Freke, director at Mi-Grains in Perranporth.

“Quality is very good with yields being better than expected,” he says. “We’ve had farmers reporting yields above 7.4t/ha – for most, winter barley has come off nice and clean, averaging 6.8t/ha with specific weights about 68kg/hl.”

According to Mr Freke, the area still favours the tested variety Cassia, although a few have grown hybrids and six-rows.

“The six-rows have been terrible – a ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Guinness sales sharply down in Ireland over past year
Guinness sales have declined sharply in Ireland over the past year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic which has devastated the pub and hospitality industry, the Irish Post reported on August 5.

According to full-year results from parent company Diageo, demand for the iconic Irish stout has dropped dramatically across the Emerald Isle with sales down nearly a quarter over the past year.

Diageo reported a 22% drop in sales of the black stuff across Ireland over the 12-month period ending in June.

It comes as part of a wider tread for dramatic drops in demand across with Diageo recording a 20% decrease in sales across all of its drink brands in Ireland.

By comparison, there was a decline of just 4% over the same period in the UK, with the contrasting data attributed to generally stronger sales and the decision to keep pubs closed for longer in Ireland.

While beer sales were already reported as being “soft” in Ireland prior to the pandemic, the dramatic drop in Guinness sales coincided with the closure of pubs in mid-March.

It sparked some pubs to begin offering Guinness deliver services, with Guinness also took action with a keg return scheme ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Keroche Breweries scales down on major operations
Liquor companies are struggling to stay afloat amid the economic crisis caused by the ripple effect of the coronavirus pandemic, the Daily Nation reported on August 4.

Keroche Breweries chief executive officer Tabitha Karanja said her company has been forced to consider cost cutting measures to survive the harsh economic times.

Speaking to the Nation via telephone, she said the firm had scaled down on major operations, only retaining staff offering critical services like maintenance.

"It is a global phenomenon and just like many companies around the world, we have to adapt to measures that will enable us to survive this critical period," said Mrs Karanja.

Prior to the halting of beer selling in bars, the company had increased its online presence and embraced home deliveries, aimed at retaining its customer base.

"Beer taking in African setup is a social event and drinking from home is not as popular," said Mrs Karanja.

She also said that some employees are on unpaid leave while others had their stay home period extended.

The CEO said she was in support of the President’s order to halt the selling of liquor in bars and other social places.

"The move is aimed at helping to curb the spread of the virus and I ...More info on site
